I believe the root of the problem is the format. This is what happens when the drivers are put in this box, and desperate moves are brought out. Handing out a fine to Dillon won’t be good or will they care. This will happen at a championship race one day and that will really look bad for the sport. My suggestion is they go back to the 2004 Chase format. You have to be consistent for 26 races to make the top 10 in points to have a championship bid for the final 10 races.
The fact that he's incentivized to do something doesn't mean he has to do it. It can be a bad system and an individual acting within a system can also be blamed for their choices, you know, like in communism.
NASCAR really should draw a line after this season and say, “Don’t cross it. Period.” Getting rid of the motivation to do crap like this would be preferable but as you said Jr. they’re not gonna do that because they love the publicity.
I don't think you understand - NASCAR loves this - they will grandstand and point their finger and scold him but they know these stunts are the only way they will get sustained publicity - desperate - is a good description -

No green white checkered. Just racing.
Never been a Dillon fan and would be happy if he didn’t win a race ever again. That being said, he played the game and won within the rules that NASCAR set with the playoff bullshit. He gambled with the dive and it worked. Good for him. If NASCAR doesn’t want these silly video game style moves, then go back to the legitimate championship format that rewards consistency throughout an entire season
Not even the same. Dale didn’t dive bomb Terry from 4 car links back going into the corner. Terry bumped him and Sr was on his ass through the corner and bumped him the next. I was there, it was beautiful. And he sure as hell didn’t hook a 2nd racer after Labonte.
I agree! Come on JR get off childress’s dick on this one! Call it clearly. You even stated, if this was the cars tour he’s DQ’d. So if it’s bad enough for your minor league series, it has to be that much worst for the majors!!!
Dillon pulled a video game move. I've done that same maneuver in a Nascar game boot the leader. And then pit maneuver the next one that takes the lead.
Really wish true racers like Dale Jr would start to come out against this ridiculous points system that is causing the demise of driving standards. Racing does not need a playoff system. This stupid system has devalued what it means to be a champion, and has led to these insane moments where dumping and running over people is encouraged. Please return to a season long championship to crown a true champion and it will solve a lot of these problems
The year long system didn't randomly stop working. It was working before and hadn't changed. NASCAR wants to control/force a close outcome for "excitement". Unintended consequence is now it's meaningless and this not interesting to most
I agree with Dale Junior on this take, a win should not give you an automatic waiver into the playoffs. The playoffs should be purely the top 16 drivers that have been consistent throughout a season.
Dale Jr. is trying his best NOT to throw Dillon & Childress under the bus. In other words, Dale Jr. is trying to be a politician. He knows what happened, and this wouldn't be allowed in the CARS tour that he co-owns, but he doesn't want to step on the #3's toes.
When iRacing puts out a public tweet that says "Don't do what the professional real life race car driver just did on our service." and NASCAR doesn't do anything about it, what's that say about the integrity of the real life series when the 'fake' sim racing holds it's competitors to a higher standard than the supposed best stockcar drivers in the world? It just became a joke folks. A big freaking joke. I'll stick with CARS Tour where they DO act when people drive like @ssholes...
@FloridaManRacer where yall been? There's been no difference between the two for years...except some fans and concessions...they're one in the same. And it's been sad to see.
So torn on how to feel about Dillon's finish. On one hand, I can completely understand the desperation and wanting to reel in a win for the number 3 car. On the other hand, is this a precedent that leads to something unfortunate down the line? I understand the different perspectives equally, but damn.. that was fun to watch and it's been fun to talk about. Hard to lean one way or the other.
What about people in the top 16 that haven’t won a single race? It’s amazing that yall see it this way. The whole point of racing is winning, imo the winner of the most races should be champion and points are irrelevant. Nothing is a worse look than a champion that hasn’t won a single race. Funny Dillon is the only person to ever do that in 2013 xfinity
Do drivers nudge or "help" get others out of their way to pass? Yeah, of course. Is it even aggressive, sometimes? Yep, but what happened Sunday was completely unacceptable. If you can crash two cars (not help, not nudge, but CRASH into two cars and wreck them) to win, there's no point to racing. Just wreck people and take their spot. I don't care for any of the drivers involved. I don't have a dog in the fight, but seeing stuff like that bush league nonsense from Dillon and NASCAR's failure to respond just makes me not ever want to watch. The only thing more ludicrous is the people saying they don't have a problem with it. I can't believe Jr or any driver who had their day ruined by an intentional crash from 4 car lengths away would be okay with it. It boggles the mind.
Preach on brother. Been watching since it was on TNN and to me the Playoff format has caused the nonsense to become common place. I'm all for "Rubbin Is Racin", but that ain't rubbin & it sure as sh!+ ain't racing.
Austin did what NASCAR wanted. They advertise " I would wreck my grandmother..." This is what green white checkers does. It is part of the show and NASCAR is entertainment. Racing is secondary to the show. Look at a highlight reel each week and it is wrecks not passing. Wrecks sell now. The viewership will be up next week. NASCAR should not do anythi8ng since they have been selling this type of action. Maybe change rules for the future. Austin was racing. He did not hook intentionally for revenge which the others who wre punished did. This was a racing incident. As a fan this is what I see. The indestructible bumper cars they use now is for more wrecks and keep going. He did what Joey and Denny have done. I have seen it with my own eyes. This is more of the same. Does NASCAR want Joey and Denny to do it but not lower standings driver. I have already sold my RV, got rid of all my merch and no longer attend races. If they do anything to Austin and say you have to be with Gibbs, Penski, or Hendricks to wreck people and no is allowed to wreck then, why even watch anymore? I turn off the TV when green white checkers happen. I have seen who the best driver is. I do not care who wins the 2 lap sprint. The championship no longer matters. Even it comes down to who starts the 2 lap sprint in 3rd not messing up. Since the race no longer matters it is harder for me to watch. But I know NASCAR is not for race fans. It is after the new WWE viewer. There are plenty of other races series that are about the racing.
Jr. tries to be overly diplomatic. Probably comes from such a strict childhood where everything he did was considered wrong. He gives too many people the benefit of the doubt.
I agree with Jr! It does kind of look like Denny moves upward unnecessary as he is passing the 3. I love Denny and Joey but Dillon caught Joey off guard in my opinion and also out maneuvered Denny in their exchange.
The whole “I don’t blame Austin I blame the system” is wrong imo. Yes, the system sucks but what the 3 did was straight out of a video game when you’re losing. The integrity of this sport is turning into a clown show. Plenty of guys have been in that position of needing to win to get in but haven’t resorted to that much clownery
100% straight up correct. How this whole thing is being framed as a desperation move to get in the playoffs therefore it was justified is wrong on every level. The Childress cars have been running mediocre year in and year out and even if he makes the playoffs he’ll be eliminated pretty much from the start because Dillon was just not that good in the first place. If Kyle Busch can’t get things kick started then the entire program is in trouble if you have to wreck your way in to play the system.
I get wanting to blame Austin, but if he does this and nascar keeps quiet and lets this go, it’s on nascar. NASCAR is the governing body, the stewards, they are the ones who keep people from getting out of hand and setting expectations. These drivers have every incentive to push the boundaries, especially when they have an opportunity they may not get again. You also have to seriously consider that this may be exactly the kind of behavior nascar wants and are going to try their best to walk the line and encourage it without pushing away teams from competing.
Everyone who isn’t a fan wants to see wrecks. This is not a good way to head for racing. I’m all about bumpin and getting drivers loose into the turns, but flat out wrecking dudes is ridiculous
I guess I don't understand why its a bigger deal to dump someone or sometwo than it would have been to just knock Joey out of the way then run Denny all the way down to pit road to cross the line first. End result is the same. If they crash, they crash - that's not AD's problem. I don't even like Austin, but this whole thing seems ridiculous that had he just bumped them out of the way instead of knocking them out of the way it would have been "short track racing". I also blame Ricky. "I'd wreck my grandmother to win this race" - every NASCAR driver at some point Well, Austin just did. Now what?
Austin should be penalized to sit out first race of round of 16. Not that it would in reality make a difference performance wise because he likely doesn’t make it past first round to begin with, but instead of stripping him of a win, make it so he’s hog tied and won’t advance unless he goes out and legitimately wins a race.
Let’s just say Dillon had wrecked someone else that was trying to get into the playoffs too? But I didn’t like the Dillon to begin with but now this seals it. How you can ever win like that and feel good about it just shows a testament of his character!
@joshuaowens6482 they sure do act like children. And that's coming from a logano fan. I have to admit, Logano threw a temper tantrum after the race. But wrecking 100s of thousands of dollars in cars just so you can make the playoffs and get bounced in the first round, shows Austin Dillon is a spoiled kid who doesn't care about anybody, but him and his team. I blame the playoff system. It has ruined the sport. And again, that's coming from a logano fan that benefited from the playoff system in both of his titles
There was no deserved payback involved. There was no attempted clean pass, attempted non wrecking side swipe pass, or attempted non wrecking bump and run pass against Joey Lagano and against Denny Hamilin. All this is permissible (if you are willing to be paid back for rough passing in the future), by these two drivers or to receive the same treatment by other drivers in the same situation. HOWEVER, Austin Dillion did not perform either of these moves in both cases, but intentionally wrecked two cars in front of him in order to get the win. For this reason, both Lagano and Denny Hamilin should share the win, and Austin Dillon should get last place, not make the play offs, suspended for 3 races, pay for the damage caused to the other two cars, and fined $100,000 for each intentional incident. This would send the message to future drivers to not cross the line between a rough pass and a clearly intentional wrecking your opponent (turning them around type wreck) in order to win (if no payback was involved or extreme danger of driver or fan injury involved). Slight unintentional contacts that cause bad wrecks should not count, but intentionally wrecking an opponent (intentionally causing them to be turned around) in order to get the pass, should be heavily punished. One caveat is that if the opponent might have saved a moderate hit from turning into a wreck by better defensive driving, the hitter should not get the entire blame. In this case before us, Joey could not have done anything different, but Denny could have hugged the bottom better except that he was not expecting Austin to intentionally take him out. For this reason, if Austin was made to pay only 75% of Dennys damage cost, this would still be fair.
I'm kinda ok with AD winning given the circumstances just because of how shitty it was for a damn caution to fly with 2 laps to go...everyone secretly chomping at the bit for it to happen like they do every week...while he was doing everything right the whole race before that. Joey had been chopping him off multiple times since they were racing around each other a bunch and I think the emotions were just so heavy when that caution came out that AD was purely determined to not lose what he just rightfully earned. 398 laps without a "true yellow" and it happens with 2 to go, I mean cmon Ricky, wth. This is all your fault really.
Dale told Richard about a year before his accident to keep running his number if something happened to him - Richard always said he would never run a Scheme Design like Dale's Car ever again
Denny was gassed up and sideways upon video I’ve seen!!! And I’m sure Dillon was gassed up too… call it RACIN! Only Dillon really knows IF HE INTENDED to WRECK DENNY… IMO Fan since the 90’s! Senior/Junior/ Bowman
Austin Dillon did what he thought was best. Next race he can do it with a target on his back and maybe Joey and Denny get to him at the same time and let him fly into the fence again.
150 to 200 point bonus for wins That's a big chunk giving a good chance to make playoffs but doesn't guarantee to win and get in. 20th back would still have a hard time making the top 16 Plus give the season winner a bonus to still incentivize to win.
NASCAR has made it pretty clear lately that right hooking another driver into the wall is a no no and has handed down penalties for it. The problem is until now they’ve never been in a situation where that right hook was for the win. But penalties can’t handed out base on whether a team can afford or survive the penalty. Penalties are supposed to hurt and be a deterrent, but there is no monetary or points penalty they can levy against the 3 team that will even come close to what they gained by Dillon playing demolition derby for the win. If it were up to me I’d let him have the win but strip his playoff eligibility.
Intentionally hooking someone is one week suspension not having your playoff eligibility taken away. Dillion didn't intentionally hook Hamlin .. this just NASCAR protecting the playoff system. Joey and Hamlin both have wreaked others for wins...
I've watched the last lap several times from different angles and there was not a 4/5 car gap between the 22 and 3 as Logano states. AND the word "Him" was never said. The spotter said "Wreckin and then Wreck Yeah". When the spotter says those words, he's describing what is happening on the track. If they were instructions, they were given after the fact. Plus it was the 22 and 11, just payback for them.
If Nascar doesn't take away Dillon's win this leaves the door open for every driver in the future to just smash each other for wins, and when that day comes, I'm out. Because this is no longer a sport at that point. Sport suggests there's rules and fair play. That's why it's called "Sporting" and "sportsmanship" because there's a level of integrity that is to be maintained. Destruction derby isn't a sport, it's a spectacle. After this race, I consider the clown show that is Formula 1 to be more of a sport with better officiating than Nascar, and that's saying something to be giving the FIA credit for their officiating, which is arguable non-existent. It's still enough to keep the integrity of the sport.
Do you believe that this a catalysts for all other drivers to wreck the leader?? You really think because of this incident the flood gates are going to open up and everyone will be wrecking the leader for the win?? Or do you think this is a 1 in a 100 event??
What Austin Dillon did was not racing. That was not sportsman-like. This can't be allowed. How about you just wreck the fastest car during the race until you are the fastest car.
I don’t get what we want from the sport. This is the first time in a long time there’s been this much buzz around short track racing. Joey & Denny have done it before it’s just racing & it’s something tht causes the fans to go “we better tune in to see what happens next”. This is what makes the sport great, well it used to anyway back when we had actual men racing & not a bunch of whiny asses.
There's a difference between moving someone out the way, and dive bombing from 3 or 4 car lengths back and punting someone into the wall while the spotter screams "wreck him". If the question is "where is the line", then this is a perfect opportunity for NASCAR to draw that line. If they don't, it's just going to get worse, and this will become the way drivers have to race to get wins.
Watch the video, Dillon was 2 lengths back at the most. Joey said 4/5 car lengths and everyone just says the same thing. Tell me you can get 4 cars between those two on the backstretch on the last lap. Dillon was there the whole time. NASCAR has what they want and that is attention. Last lap wrecking got NASCAR on TV after the 1979 Daytona 500. They hope this will do the same thing as they "Build Back Better" after destroying their own product for the last 18 yrs.
It sends a message to the teams. Driver safety needs to be #1. Intentionally wrecking someone for a win should not be acceptable. Those days with Dale Sr turning people for the race lead/win should be gone.
Joey hasn’t blatantly wrecked anyone like that. When he punted Byron, that was payback from Byron running him into the wall at the restart. When he wrecked Kenseth, Logano was faster than Kenseth and Kenseth was blocking him to keep him from passing. Go back and watch if you don’t remember. That wreck was also on Kenseth. Kenseth became a curmudgeon as he went further into his career. Joey does do bump and runs. What Dillon did wasn’t a bump and run. That was a slam and run.
@@truckercowboyed2638 Go ahead and give examples. Give me examples of Joey slamming into to someone to win. Go back and watch his bump and run on Truex. That was a pinpoint bump and run, and the Joey haters think Joey was out of line for that. Ridiculous how people have different views depending on the driver involved.
@ericjefferson9684 exactly. These people just use joey and denny's past as an excuse for Austin to do something that neither of them have ever done. Joey never was a dirty driver. Denny wasn't either. Joey got bullied by the veterans because they were jealous of him, and joey decided he wasn't gonna have it anymore so he decided everytime someone does something to him, he does it back, BUT HARDER. The 3 altercations people want to wine about are Kenseth, Hamlin, and Byron. THOSE WERE ALL PAYBACK SITUATIONS.
You ever sit back and realize so much controversial moments that have happened at Richmond? Earnhardt hooking DW in 86, Mark Martin penalized 46 points in 90 (costing him the championship), Rudd vs. Harvick in 03, Edwards jumping the restart in 2012, Spingate in 2013, hell even in the spring with Hamlin, Truex and Larson. I'm sure I'm missing a bunch more. Crazy.
Dale, with your insights as a driver analyzing this move, do you feel you would be well suited to be active member of the rules committee? You bring both common sense and a fan view to the table. Thanks for being a great ambassador to the sport.
Stenhouse destroyed the integrity of the race. #3 car ran up front and was the fastest car. It’s not like this wasn’t a deserved win. Win at all costs, if you win, you’re in. Dillon did what any driver is supposed to do for his team and himself.
It’s short track racing. The bump and run has been a necessary staple of short track racing. Because it’s so easy to protect your position on short tracks it’s an acceptable part of the sport. I think the no call is the right call re the bump and run. However the collision with the 11 that should have gotten much more scrutiny. I as a nascar fan don’t want to see bump and run’s result in penalties.
Denny may have been taking the "natural racing line", but he definately came up the track when he wasn't clear. I'm not a Dillon fan, but you can't expect a guy to lift coming to the flag out of turn 4? Denny could've held the bottom and raced him to the line.
Don't know what race you watched but brother u need to have your eyes checked. AND the data feed CLEARLY tells the story. Dillon CLEARLY throttled up and most defiantly turned left INTO Hamlin, and I'm not a Lagano OR Hamlin fan.
@16:28 - Yeah dunno about 4 or 5 cars back. It has been fun listening to the conversation on SiriusXM this week. Depending on the fandom Dillon was a car back or half a lap back it seems! I'm sticking with 2.5 cars MAYBE 3 at best. Still Dillon ain't apologizing a minute for making that corner simply because Logano's bumper was in the plan.
So…If Dillion had the best restart and took the lead does anyone here think one of those two wouldn’t have spun him…the only question is which one would have gotten to his bumper first!
none of them would've spun him they're already in the playoffs. the only 2 who had more of a right to fight for the win and take him out are wallace and chastain but i dont think they would've anyway
both without a doubt would’ve spun him for the win if you think they wouldn’t just because they’re already in i present logano and kenseth at kansas and denny every time he’s around larson or chase elliott
@@somerandomanonymousnpc The only reason Bubba didn't move someone on that restart is because Denny was the guy he had to move. He backed off to give Denny the corner. If that had been Dillon, he absolutely would have spun him.

@@LawsonSims44 Ok but do you understand that ‘ridiculous’ isnt a basis for penalty? Until Nascar defines what is and isnt acceptable while racing for position -this is all conjecture.
I like motorsports as a whole and grew up on Gen 4 Nascar. There's a reason why every other racing series still uses the points system. It just works well. From Mario Kart to F1, it just works.
@40:43 - this bit has been carved up and shared and repeated so much already this week! LOL! I'm one of those iRacing guys that hasn't had the car moving my arse around but I have been in the situation Dillon talks about here. In a previous comment I talked about a highway accident I was unfortunately part of where the car WAS moving my arse. The way he describes this is EXACTLY how I felt in the highway mess and in my iRacing experience. When that left lane care moves up and makes contact it is INSTINCTUAL that you turn left into the contact not altogether different than a slide in snow or icy road conditions (granted yer outta the gas except maybe in hopes of helping turn the car).
Penalties according to me, Joey $50,000 for burnout on pit road, Austin's spotter suspended 3 races for comments on the radio, Austin Dillon has win taken away, and Ricky given a football and told to try a different sport.
Win shouldn’t be taken away. His playoff eligibility should be though. Everything else I agree with. Maybe more like 75k for Joeys shenanigans on pit road. And I’m a Logano fan.
I definitely liked the tire options. Hopefully they'll get to the point where the teams get to pick how many sets of this and that and add another tool to the old strategy kit!

That system stopped working as intended.
That is why a pivot was necessary
Bingo. I don't even consider playoffs era "champions" true champions.

@@Backstretch1Well, I certainly do.
The year long system didn't randomly stop working. It was working before and hadn't changed.

The best stock car racers in the world are in Australia. Hands down, no argument can be made.
😳😳😳
It's been happening. Just cause he's an underdog everybody needs to make some big deal about it
The 32nd in points and gets into the playoffs with a win, is a rule change I didn't care much for.
Yep. There should definitely be no free rides into the playoffs. Top 16 and only the top 16.
They need to get rid of the playoffs format
He’s 26th jerk
What about people in the top 16 that haven’t won a single race? It’s amazing that yall see it this way. The whole point of racing is winning, imo the winner of the most races should be champion and points are irrelevant.
Nothing is a worse look than a champion that hasn’t won a single race. Funny Dillon is the only person to ever do that in 2013 xfinity
It's an unfortunate quirk in the system.
No one ever anticipated a driver 30th or worse in points was going to have a snowball's chance of winning
Watching on tv, you could feel the energy shift! Everyone was thinking did he really just do that (broke driver code)
Those 2 had it coming. Maybe he would have held back if it was someone who didn't deserve it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😊
Austin did what NASCAR wanted.

Most video games DQ you for that but NASCAR won't
I watched this race with non nascar fans(I'm a life long fan) They said they would watch more after that finish. They watch f1 lol

"Ricky, you messed up" Story of his career
I guess I don't understand why its a bigger deal to dump someone or sometwo than it would have been to just knock Joey out of the way then run Denny all the way down to pit road to cross the line first. End result is the same. If they crash, they crash - that's not AD's problem. I don't even like Austin, but this whole thing seems ridiculous that had he just bumped them out of the way instead of knocking them out of the way it would have been "short track racing". I also blame Ricky.
"I'd wreck my grandmother to win this race"
- every NASCAR driver at some point
Well, Austin just did. Now what?
Love this comment 😂
Austin should be penalized to sit out first race of round of 16. Not that it would in reality make a difference performance wise because he likely doesn’t make it past first round to begin with, but instead of stripping him of a win, make it so he’s hog tied and won’t advance unless he goes out and legitimately wins a race.
Let’s just say Dillon had wrecked someone else that was trying to get into the playoffs too? But I didn’t like the Dillon to begin with but now this seals it. How you can ever win like that and feel good about it just shows a testament of his character!
Feelings don't mean a darn thing when you've clinched a playoff spot. This isn't a children's sports league. Winning is everything.
They all act like babies at some point. It's so funny
It was the best finish of the year
There was no deserved payback involved.
"Apathy is complicit in a court of law"
Haha, that's a helluva quote.

150 to 200 point bonus for wins
That's a big chunk giving a good chance to make playoffs but doesn't guarantee to win and get in.
20th back would still have a hard time making the top 16
Plus give the season winner a bonus to still incentivize to win.
The tire deal was awesome!
I DONT FEEL SORRY FOR JOEY…. HES DONE IT TO PLENTY OF PEOPLE! DRY IT UP JOEY!!

How about it?😂🤷🏼♀️😮💨
I don’t get what we want from the sport.
Not true joey wrecked plenty in order to win
So you gonna keep crying about it
@@truckercowboyed2638 Go ahead and give examples. Give me examples of Joey slamming into to someone to win. Go back and watch his bump and run on Truex. @ericjefferson9684 exactly. These people just use joey and denny's past as an excuse for Austin to do something that neither of them have ever done. Joey never was a dirty driver. Stenhouse destroyed the integrity of the race. #3 car ran up front and was the fastest car. It’s not like this wasn’t a deserved win. Win at all costs, if you win, you’re in. Dillon did what any driver is supposed to do for his team and himself.
Well it was not a deserved win as he bottled the restart as he has done all year, he had the win and then he did not
@chazer45 totally agreed. Good point
