One of Denzel’s most underrated films, and one of his best. Don Cheadle was oscar worthy.
Fun fact: Mouse was originally for 2Pac, but he was incarcerated at the time.

      Wow! Really? Interesting.
No offense to Tupac, but I'm glad Don Cheadle played the part. He killed the role in a way that I can't imagine someone else could have. I can see why they wanted Tupac, though; he seemed fitting for the way Mouse was written in the novel. Book Mouse was a lot more brazen and cold-blooded than in the movie. However, In the movie, even though he was crazy, Cheadle portrayed him with some familiar, humorous, and even endearing qualities. He was awesome. You know you have to be a bad somebody to steal scenes from THEE Denzel!❤

Yes I agree with you it shows more of what easy Rollins was going through but as a detective he was more brilliant than the police officers and more in the books the police came to him to help them solve cases they could not

This movie was a head of its time. I went to see it twice when I was a young 27 year old man. I saw it once with my girlfriend at the time and then again by myself. I think this generation would appreciate it more because this generation of conscious black people love their history.

I still remember when this came out, still to this day one of my favorite films period. Doesn't get the credit it deserves . Walter Mosley is an amazing author, the book was so good. It really captures the time in his writing.

This is almost like a forgotten Denzel movie. It doesn't get mentioned when discussing his better movies but it's worth having in the collection. I didn't know it was based on a book series. I don't know how well it did at the box office but I'm guessing that if it had done better we may have gotten at least one or two more of the books from the series adapted to the screen.
    Another dope review.
    Edit:
Yeah, I looked it up and it bombed at the box office despite positive reviews.

yeah, he wasn't a drug dealer, woman beater, thug, etc...just a good Black man...Hollywood and the world wasn't ready...you have to remember that this came out after...Boyz in the Hood, New Jack City and What's love got to do with it.

Man, Denzel was finer than frog hair, split three ways and sanded! The only other movie he was in that topped this finenessness (yes, I made that word up!) was Denzel in Ricochet!....and I will be looking for a Struggle Reviewz of that, too!

No one in the comments is tipping their hats to Director/Actor Carl Franklin?!
Carl Franklin that many of us ol' folks remember best as "Thelma's" boyfriend...was it "Larry"? on "Good Times"
Last thing of his that saw was one or two episodes of the HBO WWII miniseries "The Pacific"
Anyway, the sets, props and costuming for DIBD were SUPERB!
I can't help but love it as I spent four years of my childhood just blocks away from "Ezekiel's" house in the film, just off of Adams Blvd.
When I look at those exterior scenes I can almost hear the Helm's truck coming!

Great review, the film was good, it was not one of Denzel's best films, but he played the role great his character reminded of Humphrey Bogart in those 1940s films, they were planning to turn Devil in a Blue Dress into a tv series after the film release but never came through

Correct it was on coincide with easy Rollins and mouse getting into more trouble and more the backstory in the film about mouse killing somebody and easy had to flee from Texas and made his way to Los Angeles. I have to agree to me this is one of his good films and I love these Humphrey Bogart's new one you are type scenario such as Chinatown , last man standing with Bruce Willis etc
