Definitely one of Denzel's best early performances, and one of the best films of 1990s. It's a shame there were no sequels. Walter Mosley wrote 13 more Easy Rollins novels after this one, weaving his character's life through the history of LA in those decades. Many of them would have made great films with Denzel in the lead. He & the director, Carl Franklin, originally planned to do at least a trilogy. I guess at the time this first one was too rarely appreciated of a pleasure to make that possible. It only gets better with age. Of course, as good as Denzel is here, the great Don Cheadle nearly steals the show as Mouse, with his incredible blend of swag, comic timing, and psychotic menace. And yeah that line still cracks me up every time, because their whole relationship is distilled in it: "Easy, look- if you ain't want him killed, why'd you leave him with me?"
That time Hollywood used Jennifer Beals' racial ambiguity as a literal plot twist lol. "HE'S MY BROTHER!" That moment is literally all I remember from this movie lol...
"Everybody was peeing on my head and telling me it was rain." Still one of the greatest lines from a movie that I still use as often as the situation arises.
The fact that they never made a sequel to this movie even though there are several books in the Easy Rawlins Mysteries is almost criminal, but to be fair both Denzel and Don's careers blew up after this.
One of my favorite Denzel Washington movies. Definitely in my top 5 Denzel movies. Also, Don Cheadle should have been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars! Major snubbed!
Great reaction. You are one of the few that recognized that miss Jennifer beals is not white. Lol! She is the start of flashdance and she is indeed, a woman of color.
Definitely one of my favorite Denzel movies.......but you should definitely check out more of his older films. Check out: Ricochet, the Bone Collector, Pelican Brief, Remember the Titans, Flight and Philadelphia.
There’s a reason mouse is one of don Cheadle’s iconic roles. It put him on the map. Everybody loved that character. It sucks that Denzel skyrocketed and didn’t do sequels to this. cuz there’s plenty eazy rollins books to make movies for.
Was supposed to do three but the movie didn’t do well at the box-office. I hate people let this movie flop, could’ve been an incredible trilogy, but at least we got this film, might be my favorite ever.
Read the Walter Mosley novel that this film is based on. It’s a brilliant work of noir fiction. Also, I named my cat, Mouse, after the character in the novel.
NGL, it's cah-ray-zeee that you reacted to this movie... Before this, I thought of this movie and thought that Denzel's character is Adison and Don Cheadle's character is Brandon. Then Brandon says: "I feel him" - refering to Mouse in the scene where he chokes Joppy. 😆😁
9:20 that penguin looking dude played in Dances With Wolves as the colonial that peed his pants then offed himself after giving Kevin Cosners his papers to go out west. Ya kkow, the one that lost his mind
OmG! I love this movie so much! It's actually based on a book by Walter Mosley and is the 1st in a series following Denzels character Ez Rawlins.. If you're lookin for some good books to read 😊
One of Denzel Washington's best and most underrated movies.
I would have loved an Easy Rawlins series of films...
💯
@@mikehamilton5730 I would have loved to see that too. That character Mouse was crazy though.

Ah, the start of my adoration of Don Cheadle. Love this movie.
Jennifer Beals, also famous for the classic movie Flashdance.❤
One of my mom’s favorite movies along with Mo Better Blues ❤ She loved Denzel to point I call him Dad when he pops up on screen.
The fact that they never made a sequel to this movie even though there are several books in the Easy Rawlins Mysteries is almost criminal, but to be fair both Denzel and Don's careers blew up after this.
True but several sequels would have been nice. That book series deserved it.
@@keifer39 I agree. I've read them all. I think the problem was it wasn't commercially successful.
Don Cheadle was brilliant as Mouse and lived up to everything the character is in the novel by Walter Mosley ❤❤❤
One of my favorite Denzel Washington movies. Definitely in my top 5 Denzel movies. Also, Don Cheadle should have been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars! Major snubbed!
Lisa Nicole Carson had them thangs back in the day

"A Soldiers Story" is a early Denzel military-murder-mystery.

I watched this back in the 90's when I was like 14 or 15. This movie was so good, for a while all I read was the Easy Rawlins novels by Walter Mosley
Possibly my favorite Denzel movie.
I was so upset he didn't do more in this series of books
Me too!
Was supposed to do three but the movie didn’t do well at the box-office. I hate people let this movie flop, could’ve been an incredible trilogy, but at least we got this film, might be my favorite ever.

It's a classic noir detective story. Nothing strange about it.
