      Thank you for mentioning this. I was surprised it wasn't in the video whether they survived & was about to look it up. I remember watching the movie about this and recall that the passenger pilot was kneeling or squatting as he worked the controls trying to help them stay straight. He was unrestrained. So when the plane cartwheeled, I thought for sure he was a goner. But it was so long ago, I couldn't remember.

      I don’t think they were going to have any better outcome regardless. They had no fine flight control, and more importantly no breaks. It really was more a question of which end of the runway it was going to come apart at? And had they bled off enough energy in the vertical to make it survivable?

      That was unbelievable. I am sure if Japan Airlines Flight 123 had that kind of terrain around them , they could have landed their plane too. But all the Japanese rescuers had to do was actually show up immediately and let the Americans do their job. Still urks me to think about now. What a massive failure. I truly believe the could have saved 20+ lives if they just would have done their job.

    • @MegaTechpc
      @MegaTechpc ปีที่แล้ว +14

      One thing to note about that successful DHL landing is that the Captain had knowledge of this United 232 incident in his memory from years before and knew the procedure of utilizing asymmetric thrust to deal with total loss of hydraulic control. The crew of United 232 had little prior knowledge of how to properly deal with this total loss of hydraulics and had to “learn” how to control the aircraft with engines-only on the spot. Their heroic actions indirectly assisted the DHL crew because they knew it was possible to survive such an unlikely situation, since they had knowledge of the United 232 incident in their minds.

      @@MegaTechpcIn an amazing twist of fate Dennis Fitch, the DC-10 Check Ride Captain that was flying as a passenger and had come up to help, was one of the few people that had considered that particular problem, had modeled it in the simulator, and written a paper on the use of asymmetric thrust for emergency flight control.
      In another astonishing bit of luck fate or grace of god, the Sioux City area Fire and Emergency Services had run a full regional all hands disaster drill on what turned out to be almost the exact scenario. They had had enough time to absorb and integrate all of the lessons learned, but not enough time for anybody to lose their readiness. So when that plane came down every first responder was in a state of readiness rarely achieved. They all each knew exactly what their job was and where to go. It was the best response that could possibly be hoped for.

When I turned onto I-29 north from the bypass, all the traffic was driving slowly in the right hand lane, halfway on the shoulder, with dozens of ambulances passing by. I thought the fertilizer plant must have blown up. I was shocked when I found out it was a plane crash. A guy I went to high school with was a mortician. I'm a wrench pusher, myself, and my brother's a Calibrations Technician in North Carolina, so he works with a lot of labs at the big pharma companies like Pfeizer and Bert's Bees... People frequently wonder why I'm such a "prick" about the details and tamper seals, inspections being done ONLY on clean and clear parts, and all the janitorial efforts (which is about 80% of what I end up doing)...
    The pilots and drivers can have the "Glory Jobs" and be the faces of the company. Behind the scenes, when equipment fails, wires and circuit boards fry up, or rotars tear themselves apart inside engines and motors, it's one of US who screwed up... a wrench pusher, like me... I take a great deal of pride when I work on something, taking out bad parts and replacing them with good NEW parts. When I screw up, it might only inconvenience a driver getting stranded and a bunch of shoppers who can't get sh*t out of Wally World because the truck didn't make the run that day... BUT it might also mean brakes failed or the air compressor gave out and created a pile up on the highway...
    When Calibrations aren't right in a lab, the company that's trying to make drugs to save lives can VERY EASILY make poison that kills people without even knowing it. Whether a degree just isn't a degree anymore, or a gram isn't a gram any more... You could be getting life saving Prednisone or a Carcinogenic cocktail with neurotoxic side effects...
    That's the life of a tech'. There isn't such a thing as "Just a technician"... ;o)

The flight crew are rightly lauded for salving what should have been an unrecoverable situation. More lived than dies, when none by rights ought to have survived being in such a unique situation.
    The images of cartwheeling flaming wreckage were totally at odds with the high survival rate. Extraordinary.

    I think some things to consider about this accident that maybe haven't had enough attention are:
    1. This seems to be the first landing attempt of its kind. While others followed, one thing that is said is you make all of your mistakes with the first one.
    2. They are flying with an engine out. That is reduced power to recover from a descent.
    3. They are flying with the right wing drooping. This is a further reduction of power to keep that wing from dropping.
    So really at best they can maybe get 50% power. There is a good chance they had less than 50% power. As is pointed out, they had to get pretty low in order to get into dense enough air to just arrest their descent. Plus, with no flight controls, they would have to wait for the engines to spool up, the plane to speed up, and eventually pitch up. When you are coming at the ground too fast while going over 200 mph, this all makes it a lot harder to correct. There was no aborting and trying again.
    When you look at the plane hit over Baghdad, they had a lot more going for them and knowledge of this incident.

    If they pilot controlling thrust would have accounted for the input to action delay and added power to the right engine 5 seconds sooner, they would have landed level. I get the pilots did amazing overall but they could have landed level and possibly saved the 111 people that died

    But, what about the speed? Didn't they realize they were coming in too fast? They circled other times. Shouldn't they have slowed down before attempting to land?

    3:50 - because of the risk, Boeing spaced the lines further apart, rather than together- the DC-10 design failed completely, in this regard.

    I would have liked to seen a simulation of exactly how the plane impacted the ground. The videos of it are such a tumbling mess of wreckage. I’ve never been able to understand how it landed.

      I saw video recorded by a private citizen outside the airport. It was shown on network TV news, just minutes after the crash. There hadn’t been time for the news crew to fully be briefed on what would be shown. It was a wide angle view with a fence partially obstructing the sight of the DC-10 cartwheeling, then exploding.
      Viewers, most of whom hadn’t heard about this crash on any radio news or local TV news because it was so late breaking, were not prepared for what we saw. It was awful.

    the Voice acting is hysterical, they sound like they are out-sourced to Korea and no one knows how to read the script or interact with each other, so I thank you for much needed laughs! the way the air traffic controller pronounces Sioux (pronounced like the girls name SUE) City as "See-oo City"!! come on guys try a little harder, google is easy to use, no guessing needed.

    3 Greens: Your aviation videos have so much to offer compared to many of the other channels. They are interesting and engaging for the most part. But there is no reason to show a photo of a blown engine on the wing of a Boeing 777 when the engine in question is mounted on the tail of a DC-10. Even with the text identifying it as a Boeing 777, it is confusing as to why a wing mounted engine is displayed when the engine that failed was at the tail of the aircraft. It makes no sense. And I doubt that the failed DC-10 engine was in the same condition as the engine you showed hanging from the wing of a Boeing 777. A description is better than a false image in this case. Also, your voice actors or computer generated voices, sound like children, or at best, cartoon characters. This should not be difficult to improve. But again, good job with what you do best.

    • @Cherry-fm1lj
      @Cherry-fm1lj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that particular image from the 777 is one of the only images we publicly have of what an uncontained engine failure looks like. it was simply used to help give an idea of what it may look like. i have not seen an image of an uncontained engine failure on a tail mount before so 3 greens just may not have been able to provide that

      @@Cherry-fm1lj I get it. I guess I am just too much of a purist when it comes to history. Many TH-cam channels upload videos that are misleading, at best, in order to sensationalize a topic and draw traffic to the site. When I see discrepancies of this type from a content provider that I do not know well, I wonder whether accuracy is compromised in other ways. I had a similar reaction to the video: "Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance". They do label the photo substitutions, although they are easy to miss. And they seem to do a very good job overall. I just find it unnecessary. I do not think the potential for confusion and risk of raising suspicions about the veracity of other aspects of the story are worth including images of parts and planes that are not relevant to the video. In any case, the text to speech engine needs some work.
