    Besides that, they are very relaxing and enjoyable to watch. Thank You! GlennFHoward

    I think that I may understand your feelings about tunnels as we have tunnels on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Smokie Mountains of North Carolina. Some tunnels are so long that you can not see the end. Any lights from the auto seem to be absorbed into the tunnel wall. It is scary.

  • @ncplantdoctor
    @ncplantdoctor 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, that was a short tunnel. However, as slowly as you were going, I still might have explored what was above it and met you on the outlet. That tree had the perfect globular shape of a tree growing without any crowding; a fine specimen.

    I was leery of tunnels at first since I had been warned about drips and such, but then I did a very long tunnel in the Black Country on a rare very hot day in England. It was sublime. I also like them when it is bucketing down rain for obvious reasons. You seem to be having a great time. It will be nearly a year before I get on a narrowboat again. I can't wait. We await the recovery from shoulder replacement of our English friend who has the job of lock cranker. When he is fit again, off we go. Until then I will watch your travels with envy; other than when the weather is as bad and cold as it is expected to be in Merrie Olde this week.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Franklin Levin The weather is not being terribly kind at the moment; lots of showers then a hint of sun and just as you think you might move off again, it chucks it down once more. Also been a bit windy today and more on the way tomorrow!

    Phrase of the week " Another Flipping Tunnel" Seriously.....How in the world could anyway down vote these awesome videos. Really? Oh...I see now what was offensive, That middle section one of the solar panels was crooked....AHHHHHHH. Yeah that was it...I guess that ruined it for everyone who noticed. Ha Ha Ha. Thanks again for such quality output. You sure are a nice guy to offer this stellar content up for free. Kudos!!

    Loving these videos. Slowly getting through them in the hope of catching up. My love of narrow boats started several years ago when I lived near the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct in Trevor, North Wales. I would go jogging over the Aquaduct in the early hours and pass many narrow boats moored up, cooking breakfast. Mmmm The smell of cooking bacon still takes me back to them days. Hope to live on a narrow boat when I retire in 18 years. A dream I hope to make a reality. These videos are just making me want the life style even more. Well done. 😃

    The "very 'tree-like tree'" reminds me of the valley oaks and coast live oaks that dot sere fields and hillsides in California ... so often they stand alone, steadfast and distinctive in silhouette. So yes! Totally get the enjoyment of a proper tree-like tree. 😊

    Wonderful videos - I'm chomping my way through them gradually but was pleased to see someone who actually talked about Rugby, my home town, on their way through. I too have travelled along that stretch of the Oxford in a boat hired from Clifton Cruisers, although I do not have one of my own. Just a bit of trivia - the viaduct you pointed out carried the down line from Market Harborough, long since disused, as are the lines going in 5 of the 9 different directions you used to be able to travel from Rugby. The arm near Clifton Cruisers is a truncated section of a loop in Brindley's original canal that was straightened out - there are many. Well, back to watching your videos, and thank you very much for them.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Yes, I've done another video about the Clifton arm being dug out. Sorry, can't remember which vlog it was but scroll through the channel and you'll find it. Also includes the work at Hillmorton.

    • @simonuden8450
      @simonuden8450 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, yes I found it and happened to be watching it as you replied. I was wrong, I think, about that arm being part of a disused loop, as I've looked at an O.S. map from around the 1900's, and it was then being used to reach only as far as Clifton Wharf, the first stop out of Rugby on the Market Harborough railway line.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no, you were right. The arm was part of the old route.

    I see on the news periodically severe flooding in parts of England. Do the canals flood over their banks in heavy rains? I am throughly enjoying your journey and your style of Vlogging. My only disappointment is that I will soon be running out of videos. You'd better get cracking on more videos. LOL :)

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In heavy rain, largely no - drains and overflows take care of it. But last winter, yes, severe flooding did cause damage. One canal is still not fully re-opened I believe.

    I’m curious: during a previous video I noticed mile markers on the canal....not kilometers? During this video I heard you describe the tunnel as being 250 yards long ( in lieu of meters ). Is this because it’s a canal and not a roadway?
    I love the videos, thank you.

    Will you ever go to the canals in London ?

      I shall try not to, they're very congested. I'll get near to London then turn round!

    Curious, early in this series you mentioned spiders scurrying about. Did you have an exterminator come out, or do some spraying or dusting yourself? I'm no arachnophobe, but the thought of trying to sleep with spiders running about would be a bit much.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No exterminator or spraying. I don't like to kill them. By and large the spiders have stayed outside the boat, in the engine bay and well deck. Get the odd one inside but I just chuck them out.

      Considered it but I'm not much of a biker, they're too dangerous (from other road users) I reckon.

    Say friend... How do you feel about tunnels. YOu are not really clear about that. (Back to watch all videos for the 2nd time. Mostly as background noise why weaving ropes and cooking and things.)

    3:18 Why do you hate tunnels, because you might have to reverse out as another boat might be coming towards you? Have you ever had to reverse out I wonder?

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I only hated them when I started out because they were dark, sometimes twisty, and required concentration as I got used to steering the boat. I don't mind them now. You should never have to reverse out (in theory) because the tunnels are two way or, if one-way then there is a system in place so that the traffic is managed.

    • @slothrr776
      @slothrr776 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CruisingTheCut I always reverse INTO tunnels. That way, if I meet something wide and have to come back out, I can do it in forward gear. Simple.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@slothrr776 That makes no sense whatsoever. If reversing is so easy that you can go through every tunnel backwards, then there's nothing to fear from reversing, so you should go through tunnels forwards, knowing that you can reverse out if needed. Conversely, if reversing through tunnels is difficult, why make yourself do it every single time, just to save having to occasionally do the difficult thing?

    hmmm, cattle odor. Don't ever come to West Texas, USA. You will suffer several hours of this odor whilst traveling at 80mph. It will be replaced by sulpher, a by product of oil drilling. mmm, the smell of money.

    • @Innerspace100
      @Innerspace100 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pig odour is even worse, though. There's a stretch of road leading up to one of the major mountain passes in southern Norway where it seems that every other farm you pass, raise pigs. And in the autumn, they spread the manure out on the fields...
