    On a glorious day in mid-June I departed from the canal basin at Stratford-upon-Avon and headed north up the South Stratford canal.
    En route I ducked under low tunnels, breathed in for narrow bridges, held my breath on an aqueduct, saw some unusual wildlife and showed off my pasty white legs. All of those treats are included in the video.

    Hello. I am not English nor do I have a boat, and I will probably never leave my country, but if I watch your videos and listen to you, even if I do not understand you well, your relaxed way of speaking, and the beautiful landscapes, give me a lot of tranquility. ... Thank you. Greetings.

    I've always had boats that I fished and played with on the large Texas lakes but I'm fascinated with these slow narrowboats and the stories of the people who travel on them. Keep on making these vlogs.

      I know! Me too! My son is a tankerman for an oil company out of Houston. He is going to be getting his Mariner pilot's license soon, I hope! I love the British shows anyway. I would love to see England where Downton Abbey and the Doc Martin is filmed! I love the crime shows, too!

    As I watch my way through the series, I have come across another jewel. Although a Southern lady never swears in public, it is most certain these words occasionally flit through the mind. Moreover, this represents EXACTLY what goes through the mind of a lady when one “cocks” up a turn on a narrow drive. From all Southern ladies here in Texas, we salute you! Much ❤️ from our great State of Texas!

    Hi I live in Australia and really enjoy your blogs
    In 2009 my wife and I hired a narrow boat and went down the Oxford canal. We hire the boat from Black Prince canal boat.
    We very much enjoyed our time on the canal and the well appointed boat. Keep your blogs coming

    Hello, and greetings from the USA. Thanks for sharing the journey. I'm reading L. T. C. Rolt's "Narrow Boat", so I looked for some videos to help me learn a bit more about cruising on these canals. I was able to find part of the canal on Google Earth, and followed along some of the place names and aqueducts as you passed them. It may be the closest I ever get to this sort of trip.

    Lord, I’m at 5:10 looking at the locks and how old they are and all the hardware on the locks that make them work and the locks themselves. How old they are. In my mind I can-picture dozens and dozens of men digging these locks out when they were new, Generations ago. If there’s one thing that I have a major passion in my heart for it is history, I absolutely love and adore history of just about any type

    I love your VLOGs. I'm a Yank who has lived in Hawai'i for 45 years now, but I spent the 1967-1968 school year in England before university. After my mates and I finished our A-levels, we contemplated renting a narrow boat and going on a pub crawl through the Norfolk Broads. Thank God we were too broke to do so. Your videos have shown me that if we had taken off on this adventure, we would have probably caused Bedlam and ended up in gaol as well. Still, I have been fascinated with England's canal system since I first arrived there in 1967 and was introduced to it by my grand-uncle. The aqueducts still blow my mind. How I wish I could afford the air fare to return to England and see this canal system once again.

As to the question "why do this?" 1) you can travel huge expanses of the countryside. 2) no hotel 3) your house geos with you. You get to see a LOT, including cities. 14 days free moorage then move on. 4) No rent 5) independance 6) women find it increadibly romantic 7) some of the nicest people you could hope to meet.

We saw both the exact spot where those lovely homes are built right against the water on the left as you came into town, but then found the Edstone Aquaduct further north, and explored it from several angles. Fantastic to experience this trip with you virtually. We can't promise you're not going to have some Canucks visiting you at some point. ;-) Great Dr. Hook reference by the way.

      Daddiebear I confess I didn't get it. Then, dredging the recesses of my mind, I recalled the line 'Who is Sylvia?'. That was it, so I was still none the wiser. Then, as I always do, I looked on the Internet and discovered it's a Shakespeare poem. Now I'm checking out if the Bard said anything regarding narrowboats...

    • @Daddiebear
      @Daddiebear 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Craske check out the song “Silvia’s Mother” by Dr Hook. It’s actually a pretty sad song. But that’s where that reference is coming from.

    • @johncraske
      @johncraske 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      CruisingTheCut Eh? Who? So the reference was not Shakespearean after all. I'm afraid the only Hook I know is the seafarer who gave Peter Pan et al a hard time.
      Again I had to look the good doctor up. I'm afraid that being born in 1945, I am of the generation which followed Elvis, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Everleys, Stones etc. Can't get into this new-fangled music.

    • @johncraske
      @johncraske 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CruisingThe Cut Been doing more reseach on Dr Hook. So my reference to Captain Hook wasn't silly after all, as the name of the band is indeed based on said pirate. Even more startling, I am familiar with one of their songs "When You're in love with a Beautiful Woman". Just didn't know who it was by. Right, that's enough Dr Hook for the time being.

    When I was a kid in the 60s on the Saginaw River in Michigan there was a small restaurant that had a bucket on rope for boaters to write their orders, put money in and ring a bell. They'd pull bucket up and in a while would lower your food down. You never saw a person. It's a KFC now and they don't do it anymore.

    Absolutely fabulous!
    Many thanks!
    So weird to imagine travelling across an aquaduct, and seeing the landscape (roads, etc) so far below you!

    After years of lurking yours is the first page that enticed me to subscribe. After years of cruising from Seattle to SE Alaska, fishing, crabbing, shrimping, clamming, trekking into trout lakes, anchoring to visit every hot spring or fjord, visiting every small town to big city plus all the Indian villages as well on the way in me own cruiser (Swedish, if you will) I feel I missed the boat....if you will. Thanks for doing it....however.

    No matter how many episodes of yours ive seen and how much ive learned about overpass narrow boat routes... it blows my mind that narrow boats can scoot over a car highway... and it's business as usual!!!

      I agree!!! First time I have ever seen a boat bridge over a roadway!! Usually it's the other way around!

    In Enkhuizen, the Netherlands, there is a McDonald's accessible for small boats, near a canal. The favorite boat trip for my kids.

    I have been watching your videos for about two weeks now. They are wonderful to watch. My job has taken me on a semi permanent basis to the Far East where Ilive now and I miss England badly. Your videos bring home to me whenever I watch them. Thank you very much. Incidently, I wondered what professional you have/had since you are very well spoken. I thoughtt you were perhaps an Engliah teacher but now I know you are/were a (TV) journalist. I've SUBSCRIBED ! We love your videos !!!! Publish as many as yoiu can. We'll watch them all.
