Great work. My question is. How was you able to get such a straight and center hole in the blank. With just a hand drill!

Robert Vasquez carefully measured out by eye, and a little luck!

    Thanks Dave, good video.
My grandson asked to make one of these for his girlfriend. I have two questions. Are you gluing the handles onto the rod? If do, what kind of glue. What finish did you apply?

Hello thanks for video, how you make it rolling, did you put bearing inside?

great video Dave!!! I have 2 questions? What kind of chuck did you have in your headstock when you had the rod running through the rolling pin? and why did you glue the dowel into the pin only to drill it out again? Thanks a lot!!!

Thanks for the comment! The chuck I was using to hold the rod is a jacobs chuck (the same as what's on a drill press). The reason for the dowel is because I had to drill a slightly larger counter bore for the bushings I inserted at the end of the video. The dowel was there to index the drill bit so it didn't skip around the larger hole.Hope this helps!

im not buying how you drilled the hole so perfect through the whole length of the stock. but the video is very usefull and i appretiate the magic drill trick

Honestly I was in as much disbelief as you are! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Susan, Thanks for the kind words. Yes I glued the handles onto the aluminum rod with epoxy. I used a blend of mineral oil and bees wax. It leaves a great finish. I found the recipe here: www.finewoodworking.com/2006/08/01/food-safe-finishes

Hey Dave, I have to design/create blue prints for a rolling pin. How did you attach the handles to the main cylinder so that the main cylinder rolls independently of a rolling pin? What pieces did you use? Thanks for posting the video!

Thanks for the question! The handles were attached to the aluminum rod with epoxy. The rod spins freely in the bronze bushing that are pressed into the roller. Hope that helps!

Dave sorry for being dense, I just can’t see quite enough in your video ... so did you put the rod all the way through the main cylinder, glue on the first handle (far side), leave just enough rod hanging out the near side, and then glue on the second handle? In other words, are both handles glued to the same rod, and it’s just floating in the bushings? Thanks!

What did you do to hold it in the tail stock?

Off camera I used the lathe to drill a hole in the centre of an acorn nut. You can see the nut on the end of the threaded rod. The tail stock registered in the hole in the nut which held it in place. Thanks for asking!
