      It's impressive how you can avoid inevitable mistakes when you working on wood lathe without samples? It's a bit painful to watch step by step slow approaching to the desirable shape of the barrel of workpiece. But you managed to do it perfectly! And why don't you use protection gloves? Some people can learn bad habits with sad consequences... Nonetheless it's quiet obvious you've come through many own mistakes and got that high level of mastery due to your love to the woodworking and commitment to gain perfection. Huge respect to you!

    I hope you are selling these for "decorative purposes only", because the finish and the wax you are using are not food safe at all. The Minwax "Tung Oil Finish" contains no Tung oil, it is made of BLO, plastic resins, and a Cobalt-based drying agent. Cobalt is a toxic heavy metal. If you read the MSDS sheet for the Minwax Paste Wax you use, you will see that it's effects towards organ toxicity range from 3 to 1, on a scale from 1-4, with 1 being the MOST TOXIC! Please research and adjust the products you use for food-contact items.

    • @WorkshopCompanion
      @WorkshopCompanion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      The resins in most commercial tung oil finishes are triglycerides, which form a stable chemical matrix that is considered "food-contact safe." The nanoscopic amounts that may separate from the rolling pin, even in heavy use, are too small to be toxic. Most commercial wooden rolling pins and other wood kitchen utensils are often finished with aliphatic resins, another non-aromatic carbon chain like triglycerides, and these too stand up to USFDA standards. What seems to make them safe is that these reactive finishes are inert when cured, rendering them chemically invisible to most biologic processes. This has been addressed by a few studies but more work needs be done -- this was the consensus when I wrote a book on finishing some years ago. As for the wax, we make our own from paraffin, beeswax, and carnauba, all of which are non-toxic. I really should get rid of the twenty-year-old can that we mix it in, or wrap it in tape -- it's free advertising for Minwax. And thank you for having the best interests (and health) of our viewers at heart.
      A later addendum: I added a video on my channel that shows how to mix you own food safe wax at th-cam.com/video/6DdNMrRn_jk/w-d-xo.html&t

      @@WorkshopCompanion Thanks for the reply. I now have no doubt that you have taken the necessary considerations when choosing which finishes to use. Yeah, that old can of paste wax can definitely throw off the viewer's perception of what to use on this type of a product.

      Sorry to say we don't sell them. I've never been part of what many crafts people call the "smalls" market. We do "bigs" -- really big bigs. Specifically, we build pioneer aircraft and flight simulators for museums worldwide. You can see some of our work at wright-brothers.org/ . We do videos because I have an addiction to teaching. In fact many of the aircraft we make are teaching tools to interest young people in science and engineering -- you can see one of our student-built gliders flying at th-cam.com/video/RUbVTxDGArw/w-d-xo.html . So...if you would like to buy a 1903 Wright Flyer, you have come to the right person. If you would like a rolling pin, you have come to the right person to teach you how to make one.

    I have made several rolling pins in the past. I found any finish to prohibit the flour from sticking to the pin and the dough would stick to it. Not the case with this??

    • @WorkshopCompanion
      @WorkshopCompanion  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a food-contact-safe tung oil finish for most of my kitchen items. I have never had much of a problem with dough sticking, provided I keep the dough lightly floured. However, "dough" comes in an infinite variety of recipes, all with their own degree of stickiness. Bread doughs that include oil, for example, are decided less sticky than traditional artisan doughs that have none. When having to roll out especially sticky dough, I simply cover the dough with waxed paper. I doubt there is a finish available that would prevent a rolling pin from sticking to everything.

    Why aren't these in Walmart and other stores? Your work is too gorgeous to go unnoticed by those who aren't seeing it on TH-cam.

    have you ever tried finnishing on the lathe by sanding down to 220 sand paper and then use french polish , put laquior and boiled linseed oil and polish your wood to look like a glass finish on the wood..

    • @jimweisgram9185
      @jimweisgram9185 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn't want a film finish on a rolling pin.
      While I wouldn't put a film finish on a rolling pin, traditional French polish is shellac. The lacquer VOCs are why I shy away from that. I like to build my film finish with shellac. And then a final coat of two with something more durable when needed (as in a rolling pin). Water based poly, perhaps.
      Funny thing. You can apply the shellac right on the spinning piece on the lathe, and the heat from friction will dry the shellac solvent (alcohol) quickly. You can build up the shellac in minutes.

      @@gsmscrazycanuck9814 I rarely sell what the crafts market calls "smalls," although we have recently opened up an Etsy store to sell some of the overflow from our vids. For years, I only made things for how-to books and articles. Nowadays, since no one reads, we make them for videos. We will, however, contract to make "bigs." In between videos, we build pioneer aircraft and flight simulators for museums worldwide -- you can see some of our work at wright-brothers.org/ .

    You should make some rolling pins without the handle ends and just taper them a bit. Check out how French rolling pins look.
