Making a Homemade Rolling Pin Sander

  • A Rolling Pin Sander is a great tool for sanding the sides of an acoustic guitar. There are several companies that sell these, but I decided it would be fun to make my own. I used some scraps from a previous project to make the sanding drum. You can use whatever size hole saw to create your own rolling pin sander.

Great version of this tool! I've got one of these on my todo list as well. This was helpful for me to see the details.

Thanks Greg! I was thinking about buying one of these until I saw the wooden discs sitting around. It got the gears going. The only thing I might do different, is use a larger diameter rod for the center axle. The 1/4" works fine, but I think the next size larger might reduce reflection in the 1/4" rod and prevent bending it while threading it. In reality, I think you could just use threaded rod for the whole thing. I was just trying to avoid clamping threads in my drill chuck. Its probably not a big deal though.

Nice but it's not running true. Appears to be off balance.

You'll have to make yourself one now. It's much easier than I thought.

Great project. Wonder if one could glue/epoxy a soft rubber cover onto it to give just a bit of "softness" or plyability to the roller?

I think that would be a great addition. I may play around with some other things like this to see if it can be improved.

I was JUST thinking to do that on the one I made (with PVC), but it does seem like it would help. I’ll probably use bike tube rubber.

Nice job, Jeff! However the process of making an accoustic guitar looks more hard than making an electric guitar.

It's a whole different beast that's for sure.
