Less is more has really been key for me in perimenopause. I was always a high intensity gal, but I now find that doing what feels good each day is much more effective. Sometimes that’s rebounding, sometimes heavy lifting, sometimes deep stretching. Heck, sometimes it’s just turning my music up loud and dancing like nobody is watching. The point - for me anyway- is to listen to my body and take it easy when I need to so my cortisol levels don’t spike. I still struggle with intuitive eating, but intuitive exercise has been a game changer.

I had to double-take that I didn't write this comment already. 100% intuitive movement every day, and body definitely tells me when I'm ready to sprint or heavy lift (and I go hard as I want, stop when I want) and when I just feel like dancing to music. Best body I've ever had.

Perimenopause is no joke! I’m going through it as well and my body is changing over night all the time. .. Listening to my body is new and key!

Even before I entered perimenopause, if I worked out super intense my hunger would be so crazy...I'm on the cusp of full on menopause, and recently I've started working out again, less is more is super true! I literally have been exercising kinda high impact/intense for 15 minutes then I tone the intensity down and workout like 10 more minutes plus walking, and honestly quickest results I have ever had. Also I am being more mindful to have a proper fasting between my last meal of the day and first of the next day minimum of 12, I usually shoot for 13 1/2 to 14 hours, this has helped with excess bloating.

I went back to intuitive exercising and love it too!! Before I had set days every week for strength, cardio, hypertrophy, and I started having a lot of issues (mainly the hypertrophy session Friday nights would leave me trashed all weekend).
When I used to exercise intuitively I would only train glutes hard maybe once every 2 weeks or when it felt deflated 😂 Doing it every week wiped me out, tightened my pelvic floor, and just made me feel unhappy.
I pretty much see what equipment is available and think of what I feel like doing. So much better.

When I was in my 30s I dropped 20 1bs because I moved to Europe and walked everywhere. It was amazing I had abs and everything just from walking. It blew my mind. I still drank wine and ate bread and cheese but mostly a lot of nuts, fruits and vegetables.

When I used to live in HK, I was in the best shape ever. It is a walking city. I will park my car and walked all over the city. I moved to the US and I started being sedentary, I drive everywhere and I live in a small town as my husband is now semi retired. I became a stay at home mom after my second child was born. Now as an empty nester, I am looking for ways to be more active. I need a job! Lol….

I have found when I walk and stick to gentler workouts, I get better results too. When I tried more intense workouts I would get crazy sugar cravings and then would end up having a harder time making healthier food choices. Whereas a long walk, can actually curb my appetite and has me craving fresh healthy foods like salads and fresh fruits.

Followed how women workout ie mild strength training, rebounding, walking, yoga, pilates, dancing, aerobics, etc & with 50% less effort, I got into the best shape! This is so relatable! Thank you! 💕

It's true. Intensive sports are not suitable for many women. It causes them fatigue, severe hunger, and more.
It all starts with the fact that the advice is tailored to the male body and they expect us to be men. Men hate women and at the same time think that we should be men (and blame women for it).
On the other hand, men do everything to make women fat and ugly (and blame women for it).
Both sides simply are not suited for women. A real woman has a delicate and slender body by nature. Not inflated and not fat!
      And we like delicate things.
I wish the world was more feminine and not manly and full of terror....

But it is hard, bc as soon as I feel off my (own) regimen and I gain weight, my husband thinks that it is bc I don't exercise hard enough 🫣😂 and I tend to get stressed and getting back into those intense routines. Strange. Research shows while women aren’t as strong, we actually recover faster between workout sets and can continue with rigorous training for longer periods of time than male (i.e. maintaining a program for much more weeks with continued results).

Yes! This idea has been nagging me the last few years. I used to work out incredibly hard, and I had good results but I started losing fitness and the workouts were not working like they used to. I probably lapsed in my nutrition too. So, I worked out harder. No gains, in fact I felt like I was losing my fitness level, I could no longer handle any explosive movement, I couldn't do high knee runs anymore, lunges became painful. I was wondering what the hell was going on. Finally I had a muscle injury and had to recover. I came back slower and easier and loved it. I'm getting stronger than I was doing HIIT. My brain started nagging me to work out harder again but another little voice is telling me that won't work anymore. You are basically confirming what my subconscious had been trying to tell me for years. Thanks for the insight.

I can attest to everything in this video, for I went through the EXACT same thing. I, too, had surgery and was petrified that I would gain weight due to not being able to work out, and I literally started walking at home while watching TV - and within literally a couple weeks, I was seeing my abs. At the tender age of 47... Now, I have always been petite, but as time went by, the leanness was harder and harder to attain and then maintain. Now I walk every day and do yoga (a mix of power yoga and a lot of stretching), and... it's so easy. :) I wouldn't have believed it had I not experienced it, but I hope your viewers will give it a try. :)

I have been calorie counting for 20 years, working out since I was 4 (I started as a teeny tiny gymnast). Before I switched to walking and yoga as my main means of exercise, I had been doing a lot of cardio and weighted exercises.
So it didn't happen because I suddenly started doing something after not doing anything. LOL The main difference for me, I believe, was the fact that high impact exercises were tough on my joints and weights were tough on my muscles, so something was constantly inflamed, keeping me from getting lean again.

I never had any issues with weight gain til menopause. And when I would workout (yes hard workouts!) I would end up with a big tummy!!!! Even doing tons of core work and I'd slim down but when I worked out I would swell. No one knew what it was and they'd just say I wasn't doing the right workouts. 🤔So after I hit 50 and was dealing with weight gain for the first time ever I gave up working out. One day I did an indoor walking workout and I felt silly, did more of them and started losing weight! Now I rebound and have added walking and ballet and I feel great and am slimming down. So much easier than all that grueling working out.

Absolutely, Rachel's "smarter, not harder" concept is spot on! Here's my input based on personal experience and professional practice. I recently got myself a Fitbit to keep myself accountable. Walking 15,000+ steps a day, incorporating more strength training, and using the Callanetics technique (for those in the know!) has been a game changer. This method worked wonders for me after my firstborn, helping me bounce back into shape. Over a decade later, I've returned to it and am seeing inches lost in all the right places! I also swear by an anti-inflammatory diet. It’s been crucial in maintaining my health and managing inflammation. Additionally, I do a lymphatic drainage exercise daily, which takes just a few minutes and has significantly helped reduce bloating around my midriff. Strengthening the knees, feet, and glutes is another gem I’ve picked up. It's amazing how much these areas can contribute to overall well-being and mobility. Thank you for sharing this valuable information. This approach really does work!

I have been doing kettlebell training and walking for almost two years. It has been rather successful. I will say, that when I add in a good jog outdoors, I notice it’s great for my lymphatic system and I’m able to rid a lot of stagnant fluid / retention by the next morning. I’ve decided to add 1-2 days of running per week - walk run interval sessions to help boost my lymphatic system. I also started doing ballet follow along youtube videos for something that feels different but works my muscles and allows me to get in some amazing stretches and boost my posture.

I have had similar experiences. I have lipodema which makes losing weight a lot more complicated. My whole family caught covid in August '21 and while it wasn't too bad for us, that covid fatigue is no joke. I was knocked flat on my butt for over a month just from the fatigue. Before that I was doing intense strength training and HIIT and only eating 1200 calories a day and couldn't lose weight to save my life!
While recovering from covid my body was stiffening from the lipodema and the lack of exercise but at the same time I knew that pushing yourself too hard with covid dramatically increases the risk of complications. So I started with 2 very simple routines over on the Roberta's Gym channel. One is just a warm up routine, not even a real workout, and I did that every morning. Then in the evening I did their routine titled 11 exercises for obese beginners. I did these 2 super simple 15-20 minute routines every day and lost 100lbs in 6 months! And that was with a dramatic calorie increase (2100) because I learned about reverse dieting as a way to recover from metabolic damage caused by intermittent fasting. I couldn't freaking believe it!
I'll have to check out HAM. I do need some strength training but clearly my body doesn't like going hardcore with it.

I agree. I'm 46 and in pretty good shape. I've also struggled a lot with body issues but life has a way of making you reassess your priorities (experiencing illness; witnessing death etc). NoweI'm just happy to be alive! I'm more focused on maintaining strength and functional mobility rather than appearance, and it feels great! Hunger fluctuates so my golden rule is to eat when I'm genuinely hungry and never when I feel full. This means cutting out the emotional aspect of eating and just listening to the body to give it the nourishment and energy it needs. I spent my 20s & 30s trying all sorts of different things and it was such a valuable process in discovering what sort of movement works for me! I'm a yoga girl at heart and found that lower intensity works a lot better for me.

Not with the hunger or cravings for sweets, but for my appearance/inflammation; I´ve had a very similar experience with heavy-weight training. You know how they say: If you want results, you should not be ashamed of lifting heavy weights, even if you are a woman; it will not make you huge or bulky! Hm.... sorry, not for me. I looked bulky and felt heavy, with huge legs(thighs especially) and shoulders. I was massive overall, like a troll, with a height of 163cm. It was awful, and I felt horrible. So, I go against that famous phrase because my experience is what the woman feared confirmed. xD I found Chloe Ting, and her workouts with little or my own weight +/- resistance bands do wonders for me. I look slim and lean, my legs look even longer than they are, my short/wider torso is tighter... and I do not look like a mini-Hulk :D So yes, everybody is different as so as every body is. I´m happy for everyone who found what´s working best for you! And for the others, I wish you to discover what you are looking for - sooner or later!

loved this!!!! I had a similar epiphany when I gave up running for an hour each day, about 12 years ago. I was just feeling over it and told myself if you stop running and gain 10 lbs you will live, but I loved not having to do the pavement grind. I started ballet classes and did not ever gain weight. since then I have done TA and ballet beautiful, walks and rebounding. As for diet, what cured my bloating and IBS after so much trial and error and non-inflamatory diets is carnivore. I gave up huge salads with protein and just eat meat primarily and my bloating went away. My gastro docor told me salad and so much fiber is very hard on the digestive system and I should just eat cooked veg. Well I hate cooked veg and just cut out veg and found a whole health community about carnivore. I am not perfect but eating primarily protein and fat without fiber got rid of my bloating.

@@Denidrakes69 fiber makes me miserable. A small amount of fruit is ok but more than that flares up my IBS. People tend to forget that exercise basically stresses our bodies. We need as much rest and right nutrition to let the body heal itself, otherwise the body won't be in the condition to repair or improve itself. Too much stress hormone and your body refuses to burn fat/build muscle. The same goes to mental stress. The body and mind needs to be relaxed to lose fat/build muscle. Like someone said, less is more.

Nightshades are like food poisoning for me!!! A few hours after eating them, I am hugging the toilet until everything is completely evacuated! I discovered this by doing the autoimmune paleo diet. At that time I had fibromyalgia and severe acid reflux, slept on wedge pillow, took double dose prescription reflux meds that didn’t come close to fixing the problem, I didn’t sleep well because of the reflux and sometimes I would wake up to vomit. The very day I stopped the nightshades, the reflux was gone! The severe head to toe fibromyalgia pain gradually got getter and better! After I got married, my husband was shocked by my "lazy girl workouts." But reality is, I'm consistent over time. Now in my 50s, I'm still fit and have managed to maintain a healthy weight. Every year I try to eat a bit better, but my exercise has always been (post dance "career"): recumbent bike 20 min or walking outdoors before work 20-30 min, weights at gym for 10 min (leg press, calves, rows, triceps, biceps) 2-3X week, and yoga or toning 10-20 min sprinkled in there. Or one full hour yoga or barre class now and then, but that's not as common. I workout 4-5Xs per week, but when I was younger it was only 3-4X/week. I've never taken a break from exercise unless sick and resting. Consistency over time. That's it.

OMG YES !! I've been struggling with my weight ever since I quit being a pro-athlete; the sport I did involved running around, jumping, some resistance training and flexibility; basically a mix of everything, and I looked the best I'd ever looked. Super slim, super toned. After I had a medical issue that meant I couldn't tumble anymore, I switched to athletics where I went from running to throwing; one all cardio, one all strength-training.
I looked and felt 'puffy' BOTH WAYS; when I was just doing INTENSE cardio (competitive running drills) 4-5 times a week I looked and felt 'egh'; plus I was always SOO hungry after. When I was strength training regularly I looked and felt the exact same way.
From what I and girlfriends who I've chatted with about this have seen, the dichotomy of only having one 'gym goal' at a time works well for men but not so much for women. I have a guy friend who has been super successful in the gym realm (he is JACKED); and he's now 'cutting' so his muscles are more defined. It's working great for him, but when I tried to follow his advice I felt and looked bloated all the time.
This is why sex-specific advice is so important because physiologically/hormonally etc. we are so different. I feel women who are just exercising for the health benefits and the 'slim but toned' physique should do a range of low impact works as Rachel is saying; mix it up to keep it fun; and do 'a little but often'!! You'd be amazed how little walks here and there in the day, a gentle 20m workout in the morning and maybe a low intensity jog/run in the evening adds up to burning a LOT of calories.
Genuinely I'm burning 1000+ calories daily rn by doing a 20m morning workout; a morning walk with friend or family member to a cafe and back; some more walking around and moving from my desk during the day; then a leisurely run an hour or so before I go to bed. A THOUSAND plus calories burnt. Daily. You see videos of people trying to achieve that in those 'eat a thousand and burn a thousand' videos and they make it look so hard (because IT IS really really hard trying to do that in a compressed time period); but genuinely regular, low-impact movement can do wonders for your physique because it allows you to accumulate workouts such that your TOTAL exercise for the day is higher than it would've been if you tried to do it all in one go. (hope that made sense)
It also feels great because you get the nice feeling you get post-exercise throughout the day; rather than doing a super intense 2hr HIIT workout that leaves you drained, starving, sore, and never wanting to exercise again (being super real rn lol, those types of workouts are just not it).

I’ve been a low-impact, long distance walking person for awhile but the holidays did a number on my diet and I haven’t been able to get back on track. I realized that stress at work was my biggest enemy a few weeks ago and started sleeping more, but I still have a bottomless pit appetite - I get to be one of those people for whom cortisol triggers appetite rather than shutting it down. So I’ve been in a negative spiral since the new year - it’s dark and cold so I don’t want to walk outside, I’m exhausted from work so I don’t want to go to the gym, and all I want to do is EAT. I know my long-term solution is to get a less stressful job, but I’m lost about how to get a short-term solution in motion. Great video! I found you due to your rebounding videos. I bought a bellicon and LOVE it. Rebounder for LIFE!!
I am a reformed HIIT exerciser and your video resonated with me. We do not need all those intense workouts (and I worked as a personal trainer for 20 yrs!). Too many HIIT workouts F'up women's hormones and actually hinders wt loss. HIIT workouts stress out our bodies and makes our bodies want to protect itself - thus hangs onto our weight for protection. The body needs to feel free and safe to release the weight. Plus, you are right in that it just plain makes you ravenously hungry. Now I only do a REAL tabata workout once a week to get my heart rate up. This is where you go to your max (your real max) for 20 sec and then rest for 10 seconds of rest. You do for 4 MINUTES ONLY and you are done and will be cardiovascular maxed out. (if you need to rest longer was a beginner of this type of workout - you can, but resting only 10 sec is the goal) I read the original study from the real TABATA guy back in 2008/2009 and then the fitness industry just took all sorts of leverage with tabata workouts - if your tabata workout is 20-45 minutes, you are doing it wrong! I got a free airdyne stationary bike (the original one) that is in excellent shape and I use that for my tabata workout. I am WHOOPED at the end. Again I do this ONCE a week for sure and sometimes TWICE if I am not in a certain phase in my female cycle. The female cycle rules women and it should. We have to work with it and not against it. Follow Dr. Mindy Petz on IG, youtube (also a book) - she does an amazing job talking about women's cycles and eating/fasting. She is amazing! Keep the great videos coming. Cheers and Blessings.

Just curious, which part of the cycle do you recommend doing tabata once vs twice a week?

@@hanhb6047Hi! The week leading up to and start of menstruation. Women need to relax, nurture self and FEED yourself. No intense workouts and eat! (not junk) Track your cycle, it is so important to the rhythm of a women. All the best.

I realized that as well. I have gained so much weight and I had been doing the most to drop it. I've done some yoga and Pilates classes just to keep my body flexible and fluid and now My numbers are shifting and I had to laugh cause, of course this would happen. I love stripper music too😂 I used to go to a pole studio when I was in my 30's.I did it for 3 years and then the studio closed down, and then COVID happened. I'm actually going to go back to that because I really enjoyed it. I purchased a pole for my home.

Ps. I actually started trying to do the carnivore diet but I just couldn’t stick with it so I moved to the keto diet. I’ve only been doing this since November 2023 so I still have a long ways to go.

I work out 3 days a week. 2hrs a week. 45 min lifting weights. 1hr+ walking. Rest of the time I sit at work or home. I feel great at 51. Diet is important. I eat 55% protein. 80g fat, 100g carbs, 150g protein. I'm 10% body fat

I have had the same experience when I use to wear anywhere between a UK size 6, which is an American size 2 with just walking. I was a UK size 12 to 14 and not a totally healthy size 12, which is a us size 8 to 10. I worked out so hard and was shaking my fat in the gym! Right up until I changed my diet and started walking 10 to 12k a day. And I didn’t need to gym more than once a week. Moderate exercise changed my life and many years later my bigger friends are still going mad in the gym they loose the weight and gain it all back. Now I only use intense workouts to increase my fitness level but not to lose weight. The only way you lose weight with high intensity workout is if you’re very lean when your body is very lean anything makes you lose weight but when you are a slightly fatter person who slightly over eats, it’s it’s hard to loose weight and high intensity to lose weight it just doesn’t work like that. I think going out for a walk makes you burn more calories and come home and you’re not as hungry because you’ve got all the polyphenols in the UVA rays and the air just making you feel calm and relaxed

Great video! Sometimes less is more. In January I decided to shorten my workouts. I was exercising 60-90 minutes almost every day (HAM). I was sore all the time and felt inflamed. I was shocked last fall after not exercising for a week during vacation that I lost a pound. How could that be even with diet cheats and cocktails on vacay?? I now do HAM deep toning 2 days a week and 30 minute strength building classes on the off days mixed in with 10-15 minutes or rebounding when I feel like it. Max workouts are now 45 minutes and I take 1-2 rest days. I feel much stronger and am not sore at all. Overall, so much better! As soon as I cut back my workouts, I lost a pound. :)

Love this! I actually discovered this exact thing when I was trying to get pregnant. I got off the pill and it took me over a year to get my period back, part of that journey included taking a look at my workouts (too intense, too often) and doing way less impact so I turned to walking and yoga. Now with three kids ajd still do the walkout but I do a very heavy strength training (30 minutes a session) just twice a week and that’s it! But I want to incorporate more rebounding.

I've actually had the same experience. I was actually was searching for more easy workouts when your video popped up. I used to do HIIT and Les Mills type workouts at the gym. I always ended up feeling bloated after even a small sip of water. I was expending so much energy with no results. Now its been 6 months since I began doing low impact work-outs and my stomach no longer gets bloated after every meal and my arms finally look more toned. My favorite type of workouts are walking, Pilates, and barre plus I also do 8:16 intermittent fasting.
