19:47 The whole story about your greatest student really resonated. I often catch myself making notes about my games. Checklists, things I need to remember, thing my coach told me...and then I find myself in a game trying to be smart instead of developing my pieces. Sometimes we focus to much on trying to be clever and forget to adopt the beginner mindset and do the foundations correctly. Im about 1200, if I applied everything correctly...easy id be 1600. Im convinced. Its just hard to put everything into practice.
i didn't get the four kinds of tactics we meant, but i still feel i learn more with these videos than with other chess channels. and even if not, Ben is the funniest guy and i could listen to his jokes all day.
24:08 case in point why attacking concepts in chess take more thought and time (clock disadvantage) for lower rated players who do all these calculations and stuff, while the opponent just has to spend little time making the most forcing reply. And when the attack fizzles out/ tactic doesn’t work, you lost advantage AND time. Thus the person who thought they saw something loses.
Many years ago I ran into a very strong Im in Washington square park Bernard Zuckerman. Somehow we were looking at a chess position,(don’t remember the position ) probably from a blitz game and Bernie made a suggestion. I said (channeling Finegold from many years in the future) nah I’m not doing that and Zuckerman said so you like to give your opponent counterplay I must remember that if I ever play you. You are right people don’t change 😮
I love these lectures so much. The interaction Ben has with the people in these and the excitement level is what got me into watching chess... Ever wonder if you could sell a tour of greatest players of the past . Also a random most influential games that shaped modern chess.
I know what he means by seeing a little more can make chess more difficult in some cases. When doing puzzles, I often calculate a bit and choose what seems like the best thing. Sometimes, the first instinct guess move works, which is why it's such an easy puzzle compared to many others. I sometimes even, if I can't calculate a solid advantage, just go with my first guess. All the variations I'm considering just don't work out. It's pretty annoying too when my educated guess is like engine rated 1 pawn down, so my guess was pretty close. It just blows a winning advantage that some random person retains by playing the simplest move like a capture of a piece or something.
Hi ben, I'm sorry if I offended you when I saw the video. I laughed because I thought the picture was supposed to express the idea that you should always apply all the opening principles at chess. I am really, really sorry and ask you to forgive me if that was not the intention. I love you and the content you upload to your channel. And in short, really sorry if this offended you in any way...
As always loved the lecture but the autims rant rubbed me the wrong way. People with autism are not computers. They can procastinate as much as anyone else. I know it's just a dumb comment but it furthers harmful stereotipes.
Ben is talking about certain type of autism. The grandmaster type. Not all autistic people are like Spock from Star Trek or like Lisa Simpson. Some of them are more like Homer or Kirk, except those are closer to ADHD, which is still in the spectrum according to some.
As always loved the lecture but the bf4 rant rubbed me the wrong way. People who play bf4 are not computers. They can play boring chess as much as anyone else. I know it's just a dumb comment but it furthers harmful stereotipes.
Your speech tells me you embrace failure. But your words don't. It reminds me of the proverb: "Talk to a fool down on his level so that he may know his place, but talk to a fool not down on his level so that he won't think of himself highly." 😅
Love these older lectures where Ben is cracking jokes to kids that don't get it.
I'd rather he get to the point.
lol

It's like golf. To improve your score it's not so much hitting the ball better. You must stop hitting bad shots. I hit too many bad shots at chess!
Man you're such a legend. You're an excellent teacher.

Missed the old lectures. This is good
in the position ( 6:03 ) you would rather not to play e3 , main line is 5.a4! (instead of 5.e3? -which allows black to play b5)
Yes. I’m a Queen’s gambit player. My early games with it were nightmares until I figured out you should play a4 early.
Ben is the man with a plan. Didn't you know that? He is, it's a true story.
18:00 Somebody told you to move your pieces out, and you were like, "NaaAAHhhh!" - I laughed so hard at this lol. 🤣

If you can't improve unless you play someone better? Makes Ben's case for Paul Morphy all the stronger. How did he get that good?

Can somebody please explain the Bishop F4 joke
IMO, the fifth and sixth best tactics are trapped pieces and underdefended pieces.
