My first day at Stratford was 1 March 1976 starting as a traction trainee with a depot walk around accompanied by Len the yard foreman who reminded us new starters that these things (loco's) only hit you once! After a week on the night shift cleaning cab windows we started a one month traction trainee course with Bert pell. I spent the next four and a half years as a secondman before becoming a driver at Shoeburyness and soon to call it a day!! I have very fond memories of Stratford depot and am very proud to have worked at a depot with so much history, a time when railways were railways!

I was a 'spotter' in the 70's and 80's before 'life' got in the way. My dear old dad (welling up thinking of him) used to take me to Watford Junction on a Wednesday evening, Kings Cross/St. Pancras on a Friday evening and either Old Oak Common or Paddington on a late Sunday afternoon, with the odd train ride out to Reading thrown in if I was lucky. The one place he never took me was Stratford. That was a one boy/young man daytime trip. Saturdays when I was still at school and weekday afternoons when my shift finished as a young sparky. Looking at this lovely video brought the memories flooding back. The lines and lines of Loco's ticking over. The smell of Diesel. I remember getting so excited as I took the long walk through that tunnel, occasionally nodding at a driver finished for the day. As has been said. No Hi Vis, nothing. But I wasn't confident enough to be 'brazen'. I ducked and dived through the lines of locos, the running sheds and even the 'heavy' workshop, with locos often stripped to the core. I would never of dreamed almost 30 years later I'd be driving 377/456/455's out of Vic and Bridge. Okay, nothing like driving one of those old work horses, but hey, it was still a thrill. Retired now. Thank you for jogging such wonderful memories.

I had the pleasure of working at Stratford depot from 1972-1976 where I finished up in link 15 the Kings Lynn link with Driver Bill Donald as my regular mate. This video brought back some fond memories but I see the jubilee shed had been demolished. Great video.

I used to go there 1967/8/9 just to look at the engines - not a spotter just an enthusiast. No h&s, no high vis, no one challenged you and no one got hurt. Fantastic place, worked Carpenters Rd Stratford too, now all gone and just distant memories, no photos either! Anyone else remember - Stratford by tube then walk that long tunnel under all the tracks, exit station, sharp left, there was a door....and you were in! Good memories.

    Thanks for the vid.
Spent many Saturdays travelling up there from down Sussex, back in mid/late 70s and early 80s. Always seemed eery walking through the tunnels under the lines to get to the depot but when you got there, it was like an oasis ! Locos everywhere, some off, some idling, many in shed being worked on. As said elsewhere here, no one challenged you, they knew you weren't causing trouble and were like minded railway fans.
Absolute waste and disgrace demolishing it all in favour of a one off Olympic site and converted football pitch for West Ham.
Saturday trips used to be up to London, across to Liverpool Street and on to Stratford, back and round to Kings Cross. The Pancras, Euston, up to Willesdon, round to Paddington, maybe Old Oak Common, back round to Victoria and home. Never challenged once by railway staff. Had to ask permission at Willesdon but they never said no.

You look at those pictures of the 50’s Amazing Rodney & Exeter made it out of there with a solid future ahead of them .
Here I am now 2020 typing this as a part of team Rodney being involved to bring this fine loco back running.

I remember this place in 1970 when I started my apprenticeship at Finsbury Park. I had to to Stratford for a few weeks to get some experience in the railcar shed. In those days it was like a bee hive, work going on everywhere, loco`s moving about, horns sounding and the smell of oily diesel that was unique to a diesel loco shed. I last went back in 2000 as a contractor, it was so sad to the the place virtually abandoned and derelict.

I heard shortly after 2000 that a Venture Capital company owned by Virgin had bought much of the former BR land. This land was subsequently sold - by Virgin, ergo Richard Branson - for development of the Olympic site. I believe the outcome, London's victorious the bid for the games, was known well before it was made official, allowing the necessary palms to be greased, and contracts put in place. Its no coincidence the Chunnel link station at Stratford was started in 2000,

I lived in student accommodation overlooking the former railyard. At that point large parts of it were being used as a satellite car-park for the Millennium Dome! Guess what? It never had more than three cars in it. There was a free shuttle bus running 4x daily with no-one on it. Outrageous waste of money and resources.
In 2000 work began on the high-speed rail link between St Pancras and the Kent Coast, I have photos of the work starting but at that time I didn't know what the work was for.

I've been visiting Stratford on a fairly irregular basis for the past 6/7 years now. Sadly, I only visited once of twice during its heyday and I just cannot put the two together. Of course, with the new shopping centre and Olympic park, it's getting even hard to visualise the depot.
    Nice Video

Two of the 4 50s shown survived to make preservation, and still survive today. These being 21 and 44. The other two shown, 4 & 16 were very heavily stripped.

@balmesh I agree Alan, anybody who visited Barry Island scrapyard has the visions of rusting hulks indelably etched on their memory forever. I have some footage of MC Metals which I will upload soon which may bring a lump to your throat.
Not sure what day it was...I think towards the end it was quiet most days.
    Thanks for taking a look.

@MrStapletonRoad So they the 50s would have come from old oak , i went down to old oak 2 weeks ago the buildings are still there but it looks very bleak . kind of strange to think that there is no major depot in london anymore.

At the risk of being controversial, I dare say that I think that diesels lack the pathos of steam when awaiting the torch? Still very sad, decline of railways for goods even more sad. Thanks for posting - was it a Sunday? . . . Alan

I was looking to see if there was any old footage from Temple Mills. My Granddad was a steam train driver based at Temple Mills from around 1919 - 1967. I was recently sent some old photos from the 20s & 30s. The only thing I can make out on the engine is number 263 - does that mean anything?
