On the road, I use the Sony XLR-K3M adapter with the ECM-XM1 Shotgun Mic. At home I rarely make videos these days but have a Sennheiser MKH 416 ready to go (with a Zoom H6). And finally as back up a Rode Pro+ (I used it on my first 20-25 videos, if not more!) :)
@@AleSalvino Wow! You must have gotten that XLR-K3M on release. I think that thing is still backordered. But even without that, you are truly ready for any situation! I can only imagine how heavy your bag must be.
Super cool tutorial Mike, love it! Simple and straight to the point. This can save hours when starting making videos. I still remember my first videos, I had no clue about XLR, adaptors, sync, etc. That's why I love TH-cam so much, for videos like yours :)
Thanks Ale! Definitely glad not to sync in post anymore. Things like this seem insignificant but over a while it makes the process even less painful. Your vlog style content is very personal esp with the proximity of the camera to you. I wonder how it would feel if you used a lavalier and were far from the camera in your environment 🤔
@@MikeBSalazar totally agree! :) Fair point, I wonder how too haha, don't do a lot of those shots but worth exploring that at some point, any good mic to recommend?
@@AleSalvino You may want to look into the Rode Wireless Go II. I like how you can have it picked up by a receiver that can plug into your camera, but also serve as a on-person mic at the same time and record to your sending mic just in case the receiver loses signal or something. DJI also made a new wireless mic kit, but I don't know much about it.
Could I do this using an XLR microphone and a mixer, instead of using the microphone and the recorder? I was thinking of getting an Audio Technica microphone and a sweet water mixer and using them with a camera with a mic input.
Can I use 3.5 ts male xlr female and plus it in xvive wires xlr adapter. Does it make that much of a difference if I dont use an audio recorder with my camera?
Im using and xlr podcast mic. Xlr adapter has 3.5mm going strait into camera. Records but voice is very low and very loud ambient sounds in background. What am i doing wrong?
Nice video. I have a Syncho D2 shotgun mic going to a Tascam DR60 connected to a Sony ZVE-10. What the best setup for the Tascam when recording to the camera? 48k 24bit file? I'm assuming to record in mono as opposed to stereo? Thank you for making your video.
Using the Sennheiser MKE 600 now. I switched from the rode video micro. Looking to invest in an audio interface. Which one do you suggest as a good interface?
Big upgrade there man! That's what's up! Depending on how many inputs that you need or may need in the future, for now you could stick with Focusrite Scarlett Solo. If you think you'll add more mics in the future like a podcast, you could take a look at the Zoom H6.
So can I connect/sync 4 individual Xlr microphones with an audio recorder to my Sony a6400? Assuming i am just using an audio recorder with 4 xlr inputs, correct? If so any recommendations on 4 input audio recorder?
What about getting an XLR to 3.5mm adapter? I have a Podtrak p4 and I do a live interview with another guest; how would I be able to specify which microphone would go to. my camera?
Good question. I just bought one too. If using a podtrak, i would still do the same though just use a 3.5 to 3.5 and plug one end to the line out of the podtrak and the other to the camera. Assuming you’re using two different mics. If anything the podtrak can split the tracks anyway if you needed
@@MikeBSalazarwould the sound be coming from the aux cable or the xlr cable? Which one should I try to replace? Because there are no cables that are crossing paths. It’s noise floor or like white noise. Nothing crazy just something I want to get rid of
Valid point. Use the audio recorder directly and use it like a mic but perhaps some people prefer the quality and or look of using their own XLR microphone. You still maintain the quality of the audio going thru the audio recorder.
What XLR microphone are you using for your setup? 🎙

Love this! Super Helpful!
Glad it helped!
Nice XLR guide! Have actually never setup an XLR with the camera directly, so something I'll be referencing when I do have to.
I'm not a big audiophile myself but as soon as I started putting the camera far away from me, then I started being conscientious of it.
Great video thanks. Would this solution work with Zoom H1N too?
Yeah except no xlr cable involved.

Yeah! As long as you got it plugged into your camera’s mic input! Sure!

I'm wanting to know the same thing because I have a similar hook up like you 3:02
If I understand correctly, the sound is stil recorder into the camera so no syncing of sound and picture is needed?
Yup
@@MikeBSalazar Many thanks! =)
They actually make a direct cord though from xlr to 3.5mm so consider this too
@MikeBSalazar You mean if I want to record with internal amplifier in the camera?
Yeah if that is the case
The audiorecorder linked is sold out. Do you have any other recommendations?
If there is no more xoom h4n try Tascam Dr-40x
Quick question: could you just connect an aux cable from the mic straight to the camera or that wouldn’t work?
You could if the mic doesn't need to receive power.
Can you use an audio interface in place of an audio recorder?
Yeah absolutely. If you’ve got an cord that’ll plug into your camera, why not?

I have an XLR to USB C attachment
can you tell me why my microphone won't power on once I have it connected it to power 3:02
It may not be enough power
The xlr that i used is powered through the xlr via the zoom recorder
@@MikeBSalazar gotcha

I get a static hiss in the background while I’m talking. How do I fix that? (I have it all setup the same way that you do btw)
Have you tried a different cable? And do you have any other cables crossing paths perhaps?
@@MikeBSalazarwould the sound be coming from the aux cable or the xlr cable? Which one should I try to replace? Because there are no cables that are crossing paths. It’s noise floor or like white noise. Nothing crazy just something I want to get rid of
@@RF_Daily yeah try a different cable. And just check your levels in camera and make sure its 1.
Can't you just get a mini jack to xlr female adapter?
I tried that before, maybe I got a crappy cable, but I just kept getting static feedback.
@@MikeBSalazar ye I realised you need like a little preamp. But I found a cheap one online for £20
If I attach a mixer with xlr connection to the camera and connect the microphone to that mixer, can I get 48v quality sound without needing zoom h?
It’s worth a shot. I would think so.
@@MikeBSalazar If 48v goes directly from xlr to xlr, it seems like a much more logical solution to me. Thank you for your response ❤️
