This episode was one of the successful examples of Glee blending humor and drama. They really struggled with that after those first 13 episodes of s1, but occasionally they nailed it.
This makes me cry every time...I felt so bad for Mercedes but even worse for Emma...seeing her cry while she’s down on her knees praying and Will feeling helpless beside her not knowing what to do...it just breaks my heart...
Watching this as a child struggling with severe OCD I felt heard and like I wasn’t alone. This show was incredible for children/teens growing up with mental health issues ❤️
I don't think any other show brought an issue like OCD to the forefront like Glee did. I think OCD is a very misunderstood, yet common mental health issue that isn't discussed much. That's awesome that Glee helped you in that way. It helped a lot of people struggling with a variety of things.
there's something about will in this scene, he's so genuine & kind & they're fragile together, I don't expect anyone to fix me, but I hope someday to be treated with this kind of care.
Although this was such a sad moment but honestly I felt this was a huge step in character development for Mercedes; an excellent creative decision! Throughout Mercedes' life she spoke to herself that "She is Beyoncè" but in life and throughout Glee she was nothing but the Effie White or the Kelly Rowland. HOWEVER in this very moment right her when she approached Shelby Corcoran, she became the star she set herself to be letting her know she is the star power! Mercedes finally BECAME BEYONCÈ!
Mark Silla I know this post was 3 years old but I’ve been rewatching it and this wasn’t the first time they introduced Mercedes being lazy. They’ve said multiple times since season 1 she doesn’t work as hard for stardom. Rachel is constantly practicing singing and dancing and is constantly rehearsing. In season 2 Jesse St. James asked Mercedes how many times she practiced for her audition and she told him she doesn’t need practice. They say all the time how nobody wants to be a star more than Rachel because she doesn’t do anything other than prepare for being one and wouldn’t let anything in her way. Mercedes thinks she should be one just because of raw talent but even raw talent needs to be refined. And in Asian F during the booty camp scene Mercedes is giving excuses on why she can’t do it and Mr. Schue is trying to push her to keep going and she accuses him of playing favoritisms but If he didn’t think Mercedes was great he wouldn’t push her. He knows she can be better. They ask her if she practiced the night before and she deflects and asks where Rachel was and why she wasn’t there too and Finn makes the comment that Rachel practices every night and Mercedes tells him to shut up. And when they double cast the part Mercedes acts like its because they can’t tell Rachel that Mercedes was better but it’s because they were both good. They weren’t doing it because either one was better or worse but because they were equals. Mercedes could have been the best she definitely had the raw talent to be the best but she didn’t wanna work for it or be as cut throat for it.
Brianna Quail- I don’t think you understand how sad it was for Mercedes. Rachel was handed everything. And yes, I’m well aware that she would do nothing but practice and try to get to the top. But that was the problem. All the time she wanted to be better than everyone, and she was just handed solo after solo. It was selfish of Rachel to just expect all the solos. Each girl in the Glee club had talent, but Mercedes had the most. She didn’t practice because she didn’t have to. Her voice was that good. She was only frustrated about the dance move because she couldn’t do it properly and she was exhausted. And she was judged on her weight constantly. Where as Rachel didn’t have to worry about that. Rachel was only judged on how annoying she was and what clothes she wore. Mercedes couldn’t even be on the cheer team without being made fun of. Mercedes had a mostly a whole gym sing a damn song with her because she wanted to spread a good message. And what did Rachel do for anyone else other than complain or try to say that a certain person didn’t deserve the attention? The spotlight always had to be on Rachel. Mercedes deserved the best of the best, but she usually got the worst. And we can thank that bitch Rachel Berry for it.
Brianna Quail when else did they introduce Mercedes as being lazy other then when they made a point to make her character lazy nobody called Mercedes lazy until Jesse said it and he was putting everybody down b/c he wanted to unfairly give Rachel the spot light after that episode they had booty camp to which didn’t even make sense for Mercedes to have been in booty camp b/c she was one of the members who was on point with the dance numbers unlike Rachel who was always in the back for the dance numbers to hide the fact that she danced with two left feet it was written for Mercedes to be painted out as lazy so that when they robbed her of the Maria part it would be easier to sell the Rachel works so hard but we didn’t see Rachel work hard for that part we didn’t even see Rachel work harder than any of them for anything that she got we saw Rachel work hard at selling people out we saw Rachel get up early and ride a workout bike we saw Rachel throw tantrums to get her way and be rewarded for her bad behavior while all the other characters were made to feel replaceable least little thing they did that challenged shue
Brianna Quail why can rachel expect everything to be handed to her but mercedes can’t. i agree rachel was hard working but they only called mercedes lazy when they wanted to put rachel above her and the fact in this episode they made comments about her weight as if that has been a problem for her in the past. out of all the girls mercedes rachel and tina were the most hard working but at the end it all went to rachel. it was sad to see that tina had to wait till rachel left the school to try and fight for attention.
What makes this scene even better than the official MV is that we can feel the heartache of Emma, living with a mental illness and mentally abusive parents
This was such an important episode of Glee. Mike got a great storyline, and finally got his own chance to shine and develop his singing voice; it was the first time we really saw Emma come to terms with her severe OCD and really face it head on, with the help of Will (loved Wemma!). And we saw another epic diva-off with Rachel and Mercedes, and this established the Troubletones as a legitimate competitor to the New Directions; which I think Rachel and the ND really needed. I've only seen it the one time, when it aired, but it remains a top 10 episode for me. I'm really excited to re-watch it and see if it still holds up.

I think Rachel was better for the role even though Mercedes has a killer voice, but I think Rachel has a better theater and Broadway role, so I get both of them

Milliannette Pérez the only reason they didn't cast Mercedes is because she was always going to be successful. She had a big voice and was always confident about it. Idk if anyone else noticed but Rachel had a complex where she constantly needed to be reassured of her success which is why she would try her hardest to come on top in glee and in nyada. So they used to feed her ego .

Oh please that line was such a crock of shite. Hell even Schuster would put Rachel in her place all season 1 and 2. She was the clubs verbal punching bag and doormat. Hell I couldn't stand her for season 1 and tolerated the character during season. During season three you got to see some character growth..not much but it was there. Mercedes wasn't willing to work beyond what she had to and expected to get the same as Rachel simply because she has a great voice. As annoying as the character Rachel Berry was/is, she worked her ass off to be as good as she was.

My teacher in 4th grade would sing the first part of this song and when I watched it I almost peed my pants because I recognized it. My teacher sung it on days my class was out of it
I found that Mr Schue reminds me of a support aide teacher I used to have back in secondary school. When the episode surrounding Finn's character happened, "the quarterback", and I saw Mr Schue crying, I couldn't help but almost cry as well because it was like seeing my old support teacher crying and this song, fix you, reminded me of how much my support teacher helped me through bullying, overcoming the worst of my anxiety and accepting that life will always find a way to try and push you down, but you have to be the bigger person and see the light at the end of the tunnel :)
Mercedes mistake in this was her trying to be Maria when every Broadway lover knows its Anita you want to be if you want recognition and if you have the pipes for it.

I found that Mr Schue reminds me of a support aide teacher I used to have back in secondary school.
When the episode surrounding Finn's character happened, "the quarterback", and I saw Mr Schue crying, I couldn't help but almost cry as well because it was like seeing my old support teacher crying and this song, fix you, reminded me of how much my support teacher helped me through bullying, overcoming the worst of my anxiety and accepting that life will always find a way to try and push you down, but you have to be the bigger person and see the light at the end of the tunnel :)
