    When i was a child, my mom would take leftover chili and turn it into burritos the next day. She cooked it until the moisture was mostly evaporated. She added refried beans. It was yummy!

    One of my favorite Wendy’s winter meals is the baked potato and chili but it is hard for me to pay almost the same price for one baked potato when I can get a five pound bag for almost the same price or less when on sale. I’m so happy this was one of your Souptober recipes. It’s easy to make and I can get several meals for almost the same price as one. Thank you!

    When my kids were little we would pour a scoop of chili over rice and add crushed tortilla chips and shreaded cheese and sour cream. Also used it over cooked noodles and added sour cream and a chunk of cream cheese to chili in a pan heat and melted it to create a creamy chili for the noodles.

    Aside from salt, sometimes a meal that's tasting a bit bland may benefit from just a little sugar or a splash of vinegar or lemon/lime juice to bring out different flavors. Especially with tomatoes balancing the sweet and acidic flavors can really help, since some tomatoes are sweeter than others.

    I worked at Wendys and they did use a frozen blend of veggies and canned tomato sauce and beans so you are on point. The meat they use is actually the patties that were overcooked from the day before.

  • @janabuchheit3389
    @janabuchheit3389 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +58

    I worked at Wendy's when I was in high school, so it's been a day or two. I made their chili as one of my responsibilities. Everything was from a can, other than the meat and water when I put it together. I love it, but like you, it's more like a chili soup.
    One of my favorite ways to use any leftover chili is basically a chili pie. Put the chili in a casserole dish, make a batch of cornbread (I like Jiffy brand), and pour it over the chili. You can add corn chopped jalapeños,or onion to it if you want. Bake it, and when it is about 90% done, spread grated cheese of your choice. I think you would like it. It's very easy to improvise with what you have on hand.

      @janabuchheit3389 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @mishaa7263 Everything was already in #10 cans. It was basically dump and go. I believe it's why it is more like a soup. You can replace the celery for a celery seasoning.

      Growing up, my mom made this with leftovers. She always called it tamale pie. We would add cheese to our bowls along with sour cream and sometimes diced raw onions. Such a filling and comforting meal. It is great for when you don't quite have enough leftovers for a full meal, but more than a few servings. I make it for my kids and they all love it.

    • @zara6673
      @zara6673 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My mom used to do basically this & called it Tamale Pie. It's just not with leftover chili but essentially taco seasoned ground meat & then we'd throw in green chilis, canned corn, chopped onions & green bell peppers. The way the cornbread both gets nice & toasted on top but has that saucy underside makes it my family's most loved comfort food.

    I think you did a great job with making this! I can't count how many pots of chili I made at Wendy's in my life! We boil the beef to thaw it out, then drain that. Then there was one huge can of pinto beans, one big can of dark kidney beans, one big pack of chili seasoning, a can of tomato juice, and a bag of frozen onion, celery, and green pepper. It made like 5 gallons a batch! It is soupy because that is how it is typically made in the Midwest. Or at least, when I grew up. They have saltines or corn strips from the taco salad?

When I worked at a popular auto sales lot, I would go down the street and grab a chili & nuggets or a baked potato and enjoy the quietness of my break…and the comforting chili just relaxed me and knowing that I ate something more nutritious than just a burger/fries made me feel better about my lunch choice.

  • @JBlack-dk5jv
    @JBlack-dk5jv 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I make something very similar to this. I add the corn chips, add shredded cheese
    But to make it less of a soup, I would add spoonfuls of refried beans 1 at a time until it was as think as I like
    After I had enough of it, I would take 1 cup and vacuume seal it. When I was in the mood I'd pop it out of the feeezer, pop a tiny vent in the corner and leave that out of the water. After 10 mins in a pot of boiling water and it was perfect. (Again left. It in the vacuume bag sealed, just a tiny vent not in the water)
    It was also easy enough for those who liked it thinner, vs those who like it thicker to make some bags up without the refried beans.
    I'm not good at making 1 Chilli at at a time. I always end up with 2 big pots, so it's way easier for me to make 1/2 thick and 1/2 soupy.
    I do use the Chilli ready tomatoes, and Chilli ready beans, and an envelope of Chilli seasoning, with my minced garlic, chopped onions, and I love the frozen seasoning blend or peppers and use fresh onions.
    This is an amazing soup/Chilli to do.
    I thing I accidentally had happened was trying to make a meatloaf, I made it and it was so crumbly, there a as no slicing it. It a was a mess. I used 1/2 of that with 1lb of fresh ground beef , and only half the refried beans, and that was great also. Again always have to have the corn chips.

    I have 2 rather different ideas for leftover chili.
    Make Southern style corn cakes and serve the chili over those or just over corn bread or corn muffins. I often do that with left over chili.
    Make chili lasagna using flour or corn tortillas instead of lasagna noodles. The leftover chili serves as the meat and pasta sauce layers would in traditional Italian lasagne. Put cheese of choice between the layers (I use whatever I have on hand). Cream cheese or sour cream is good in the "lasagna" layers too. In my family my mom always made this with corn tortillas. You can add layers of drained corn, beans or diced tomatoes too if you want to bulk it up. It's so good. My mom will make this in a skillet on top of the stove, I bake mine, both ways work but baked has more flavor in my opinion.
    Other ideas for leftover chili, chili mac, chili dogs, chili baked potatoes, chili nachos, chili rice bowls with fresh tomatoes, rice, avocado, salsa etc.
    I love chili!❤

You can add some pasta noodles, chopped celery, onion, and/or any vegetables you like, We love this during the winter. It's meatless too! Makes a big pot and lasts all week for 2 people when making bread or cornbread to complete the meal.

    I ordered a large fry and ate them one at a time dipped into my chili before finishing any leftover chili. Yum!

    We use our leftiver chili as a topping for chili dogs. Simple and tastes great.

    I like to take leftover chili and put it in a casserole dish and top with cornbread batter and cheese

    My homemade taco seasoning is pretty similar to your chili seasoning. I just double the cumin, onion and garlic powder with the addition of a 1/2 teaspoon of Italian seasoning.

    Chili loaded potatoes or sweet potatoes, is one of my faves. Or use it for baked nachos

    You can make spaghetti pie with leftover chili. Stir chili, cooked spaghetti, a beaten egg and some shredded cheese and put in a pieplate then bake. Cut into wedges and have sour cream, extra cheese and green onions to top it.

    Wendy's taco salad is lettuce, cheddar, diced tomatoes, salsa and optional sour cream. Plus crushed corn chips. They give you a cup of chili for a regular taco salad.

    I highly suggest doing a skyline chili with the left overs! Throw it on top of pasta and top it with a ton of cheddar cheese

    I know this will be weird but when I was a kid my mom used to make this thing we called chili, cheese egg thing. It's corn tortillas, canned chili, shredded cheese and a fried egg. It's awesome! You could totally make it with homemade chili

    If you go to Wendy's ask the for the gold chili sauce packets, they put a bunch in the big pots. Not quite the same without it.

    We would make chili mac with leftover chili. Just add cooked elbow macaroni noodles. Super filling and super inexpensive. We'd mix in shredded cheddar if we had it.

    I admit that I've never made a chili that tastes quite right. One time I added just a cup too much tomato sauce and it was more like a spaghetti sauce, but usually I try to make my own seasoning blend and it just tastes like chili powder water. I'll keep trying it til I get it right.

    I used to get a Wendy’s baked potato and chili! I’d put some of the chili over the baked potato!! Delicious!!
    I put a couple tablespoons of sugar in my chili, to help with acidity!

    Chili over rice. Or chili and rice to stuff green bell peppers. Or chili over cornbread. It's kind of endless.

    I add a bit of sugar and cocoa powder to my chili. I make 6-8qts at a time and the kids each eat two bowls. I second getting chili beans since they are already seasoned and dont cost anynore than unseasoned.

      Sometimes, I get the chili from Wendy's and put it on my own air fryer potato with cheese and sour cream. Broccoli cheese soup is also great over potatoes with the same toppings, and bacon if you have it.

    I used to boil spaghetti and put the chili over it and add cheese on top. A large chili could be made into two meals to take to work. Never thought of adding sour cream.

    Chili pot pie! You'd need to thicken it either by boiling it down or using a thickener, but then you could use pie crust, puff pastry or fridge biscuits to makr it into a pot pie.

    I suggest putting corn bread on top of the chili. Or adding the chili to Macaroni and cheese.
