    I understand why people like glossy. When I tried both next to each other, the glossy pops more and the blacks seem deeper. But as soon as I view actual photos or films on the screens, there is no such thing as true black in real life, and the tiny bit of loss of contrast on the nano texture just disappeared, and it just looked more real to me because the screen texture almost seems to disappear, whereas there's always reflection on the glossy to let you know that it's a screen. I ended up buying nano texture. I like it.

    You always do excellent reviews with so many details enclosed with. However this current review for the nano texture along with other reviewers on TH-cam seem to only focus on the reflection things, which it doesn’t report the overall situation I am afraid. I have seen the nanotexture MacBook myself and I have serious challenges to understand why this option can be considered. The colours are so washed out and the black seems greyish ...I still am not sure why a professional photographer or a video editor should choose the nano texture option...just because of the reflection?? Really....??

    Thanks as always, Art. I looked at both at the Apple Store. I didn't like nano-texture because it adds visible grain to the white parts of the image, like SDR and HDR highlights. I didn't like this at all because I felt I wouldn't be able to judge the graininess of the photo. I need to see grain accurately so I can decide whether to add or remove it in the edit. The glossy display is ultraclear and let's me see the grain without obstacles. I'm happy with the glossy display on my M3 MBP for this reason. Beside this the color, contrast and sharpness looked great on the nano-texture, no worse than the glossy. I think Apple did a great job.

I have an astigmatism and when I was viewing black text on white backgound both word and excel I couldn’t unsee what appeared to be a blotchiness to the white. While for the photos and anything without a solid background was amazing almost made me choose nano, but I have half my time with hobbies like music mix and photography, but the other half is on word and excel. After along time on the nano in the store I stopped being able to focus with my progressive lenses. I so wanted to get the nano, but can’t unsee the grain in the solid white.

      From personal experience a matte screen is much better for your eyes, wont get eye strain nearly as soon. With movies, i actually like the nano more, it looks more real since the screen almost seems to disappear, whereas you can always see the reflections on the glossy screen that keep telling your brain "hey, thats a screen you are looking at" 😄
      When it comes to cleaning, its a little bit easier than the glossy, feels like you dont need as much pressure to remove finger prints.

    Hi, ArtIsRight. Thanks for the video. I just ordered a MBP with the nano texture display, hoping that the image being displayed on the monitor would be generally closer to the prints of the photos that I intend to edit with it. With the nano texture display, is calibration still required or recommended? That would cost me another $300 or so as I don’t have a calibrator yet. Renting is also not an option here, where I live. I’m sure that there are many factors that affect print results and quality, so I do not expect calibration alone to make a significant difference. Just want to know whether the extra cost and time is worth it. In fact, I am a bit worried that with a calibrated nano texture display, I might be veering too off from the “standard”, where most people have over saturated monitors and displays, as I am relying on third party printing services to do the prints, and they will probably just do the prints in bulk with presets that suit most people. I am working on a project that includes years of my photo collection. There are going to be two sizable photo albums. If I skip the calibration, I can probably use that $300 to order some sample prints, which might be more straightforward and helpful in my case. Could you share your opinion on this? Could you also recommend any photo printing company that I can try? I am considering MILK Books, but I have no experience with it. Last time I ordered a photo album like this was through Apple.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      use it with preset and try it w/o calibration first. See how that goes. And the variation is mostly human perception not accuracy as some might have said, it is idea conflation.

    It's funny how suddenly Nano glass it getting much more attention than when it first came out. I have the Studio display since 2,5y with Nano glass and would never go back. For photo editing it is lightyears ahead. You always have reflections on a glossy screen, even if people aren't aware of have become used to. The nano glass has a silky surface that much better ressembles a print on a paper. Sharpness with the 5k display is absolutely enough, the glossy can look slightly overly punchy and oversharp.
    But I guess it is a strongly subjective question....

The glossy showed much more colors, more deatiled colors and differentiated muich better between different color gradings. A dog in brown with white areas or white clouds on blue sky. The nanotex was not taht clear and the dog missed several white areas and the clouds came with less structure and more blurry white. I would love to have less reflections but as i work with images, I need to see all colors and all details which was not possible with nanotex

      Yep I think being able to differentiate slight colour differences is really important especially with graphic design. I remember setting up my website with a 2012 iMac, and in some of the thumbnails I cutout some logos. But it wasn’t until I upgraded in 2020 that I noticed that the cutouts were somewhat visible which blended in perfectly on the old iMac. So, if you need to be able to see a high level of colour accuracy it’s probably best to avoid the nano texture display.

      I agree. Even in this video with images that have clouds, there’s more detail in the clouds on the standard display. This Nano generation shows more detail in the shadows but sacrifices the details in the highlights. With digital photography we expose for the highlights and you must be able to see the highlight details. Apple will eventually be able to have a more balanced nano texture but it’s going to take another generation or two.

    Excellent review. And you explain a very important point for photographers specifically. I have an external matte HP display that is connected to my laptop, and it's where all my photo editing happens. I noticed that after I finish my edit, and I upload it to Google Drive, I then like to reopen the edited photo on my Samsung S8 Ultra tablet. My images look their best on the "glossy" tablet. Always look better than on my matte screen. I never really knew the reason, but what you explained makes sense. These glossy screens always make the colors pop and add contrast to images. So, if I can get my image to look very good or excellent on a matte display, it will look super on a glossy one.
    For long hours of work/play though, I find myself gravitating towards matte displays. They're easier on the eyes and having almost no reflections is a great feature to me. So, I went ahead and ordered my first ever Apple device, a MacBook Pro M4 Pro, after more than 20 years with Windows. I also ordered it with the Nano-texture display as I think I will like it more.
    Anyway, thanks again for your excellent and detailed reviews. I am getting a ton of value from your videos as someone who has never used Apple computers or MacOS. Trying to learn as much as I can, and I can't wait for my new laptop to arrive!

    I noticed something that nobody has mentioned so far. When you look at the nano-texture display from different angles, the quality changes. At the store, I viewed the screen from the side and noticed that the glass display looked much better. Even in this video, at 21:14, you can see what I mean. Any small change in the viewing angle noticeably reduces the quality of the nano-texture display.

Does my monitor require individual calibration, or are there settings that you can share with me to change? Also, I see that there is a display preset called "photography" that locks the brightness adjustment and makes the display appear less vibrant, would you recommend using this? Thank you kindly for your time!

    Hey, first time here viewing the best video on glossy vs mate displays on the internet right now!
    I do have a question, though, last time I checked nano-texture on the Apple Pro display, the texture really made the image grainy, so much so that when looking closeup, it seemed like those mate smartphone screen protectors, you know what I mean... How is this new nano-texture looking compared to the old XDR Pro display? Does it still have the grainy texture or is it much finer, on par with other mate displays out there?

      @@ArtIsRight Thank you for the tip!
      There is one thing I do like about this iteration of nano-texture finish, it has anti refection coatings, just like the glossy display does. Anti reflection coatings are used on camera lenses to reduce internal reflections, so much so that if an uncoated glass surface reflects about 2% of light, a coated one only reflects about 0.2%! That is significant and it is also used on the Benq display. You can coat plastics as well, but it is not as wear resistant as on glass due to lower hardness of the plastic, so that is something to keep in mind when you clean a display like Benq or the QD OLEDS from Samsung, as they use some kind of coated plastic film/polarizer.

    Thanks for the video Art. I have a question. You showed the calibration test results that the nano screen has the most accurate data. I wonder if there is a systematic error here if only test one screen in each type of the screens? I mean, here the nano texture screen has 2.3 in Maximum E. Is it possible if test another nano screen, the data will have a different number (maybe higher than 2.7)? Thanks.

    I appreciate this review, but had a question about the color gambit on the glossy vs nano-texture. A lot of people have said that the color palette is more centered or accurate on the glossy even though the nano-texture can express more range? I just want to make sure that if I edit on the nano-texture that the image won’t look skewed on other devices. I’ve noticed a warmer hue on the standard vs a slightly colder one on the matte. It seems that the glossy is already standardized, so there’s less need to calibrate and mess with the settings.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Gamut is the same, just different panel glass that affects our perception of appearance. Cooler and warmer can be adjusted but then that is another can of worms as well. Based on my testing color is more accurate on the nano, but then that is relatively speaking, the minutia variation is so small that human vision can't tell them apart anyways, just preception

      Glossy or nano texture has nothing to do with bitdepth that is the property of the LCD panel.

      @ I know. It's a question, and I can't find the answer, because Apple doesn't communicate on it. I'm trying to find out if these screens are in 10 bits or 8 bits, do you know? In any case, thank you for your video, it allowed me to choose the textured nano but I don't think I'll calibrate with it, especially if it's 8 bits

    I was noticing that you were inputting the sRGB values in a Custom setting. Majority of my clients deal with Display P3. Quality in color is what my clients want. What are the custom display inputs I need to enter? Have you done this?

      Yes I have a guide on this, P3 D65 along with sRGB, and Adobe RGB the white point x, y values are the same.

    I might wait a bit ( actually anyway I am not upgrade to a new m4 series Mac anytime soon), I might wait a bit to see how the nano texture last, as I remember my MacBooks always have the oil finger print on the keyboard and that is really easy to affect the screen, sometimes even damage the display coating, so I am might wait a bit. But I like the concept of using a nano texture/mat display to work with an image.
    I might need to clean my screen a bit more though ;)

      yeah that is the main question, especially on a laptop screen. I would check out some feedback on the iPad Pro first, since they were out longer and are portable devices

    i think the question is, how will the nano hold up long term. we will have to wait and see a year from now if the quailty of the screen deteriorates or not.

    • @KaitlynMcLachlan
      @KaitlynMcLachlan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do think this is a (potentially) valid concern. Especially as they provide a polishing cloth. Obviously different/more delicate?
      How has the studio display with nano held up? What about the iPad which inherently has a ton more pressure, smudging, oils from fingers?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hard to say, we don't have one in a portable or laptop until recently stated with the ipad pro. so ymmy, probably more prone to dust, smudge, smeer and easier to scratch but then you are not relying on touch input like the iPad, so you should be ok. Also some of us will replace the machine every few years anyway. And it is more durable than the previous laminated LCD, of the bygone era

      i feel like you wouldn't need to touch it up very often, from what i've seen even fingerprints are not as distracting as on the glossy version

    Great discussion, Art, on the technical aspects of glossy vs matte (nano textured) screens. Ironically, with my recent new 13" M3 Air which I have primarily for travel applications, I've started using it on my desk for non-photographic applications precisely because it has the higher contrast glossy screen. However, when I do any photo editing work (or even viewing photos) I turn to my right and work from either of my Benq SW displays. If I had to work from my laptop solely, I might think differently about this but I'll count myself lucky I can experience the benefits of both display types.

    Thanks for your interesting comparison. However, I am a little puzzled because it seems that the screen pictures on each the two MacBook M4s (glossy and nano-texture) are slightly different photos, perhaps taken at different time intervals, with the position of the sun behind the rock and the positions of the waves being different. May I ask, did you do this difference deliberately, and if so why? Many thanks again.

    • @BeeRoyLee
      @BeeRoyLee 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’ve owned the m3 and m4 and compared the same image on both. Nano is significantly better in terms of picture quality and reflection. Again, the difference is significant.

    • @ArtIsRight

      Those are the wall paper from Apple, slightly different but the colors are the same, if it wasn't I would not use them. And those are just for the reflection demo.

      @@ArtIsRight Thank you, I see. Well, I was only concerned because the sun was radiating "starburst" rays from the edge of the rock on the nano-texture screen, but not on the glossy screen, so I wondered why. Thanks again.

      You need, the newer Calibrite Display Pro HL or Display Plus HL. The old version will calibrate the display, you just won't get the full color gamut of the display.

      Thanks a lot for the reply! I was looking for information on the x-rite site and it seems that the old i1Display pro can handle monitors with 1000nits+ and wide gamut, oled etc. I'll try to search better. Have you had a chance to try the old device?
