I own 3 bags from Peak Design, the sling, backpack and messenger. I love them all. My Peak Design backpack has been through about 15 countries and 5 months in east Africa including monsoons, dropped in the mud, and with me on safari. Always kept my gear safe.

I enjoy watching what other photographer’s use to carry their camera gear-I don’t have a camera bag-never saw much use for it-I do use a photographer’s mesh vest for my wallet, keys and iPhone. I like your bags Hugh. ❤

I have 5 Oberwerth bags of 4 different models I use for 2 Leica SL2s and 2 Leica Ms each with various lenses and accessories. They are beautifully made, no doubt. However, when they designed various bags for M and SL cameras, they obviously didn’t actually use them for more than a minute. And in the Rocky Mountains they stop (or start) the top zippers 3” from the bottom, thus inhibiting access to the bottom and functionality of the exterior top pocket. When I communicated with them about this failure of design, they claimed they couldn’t run the zippers to the corner. Yet they did it on another top loading bag. Also, because they are more concerned with looks than functionality, all of my bags are all a we bit too tight. A few centimeters here and there would make them all more functional. Just try putting 2 SLs with shades on Leica SL zooms in a Porto and you’ll get the picture. Also, the beautiful red linings in the Porto for sure, distort after a few ins and outs. Beautifully made, expensive, and close, but no cigars. Just ordered a new Domke. No such issues.

For backpacks, I favor my Tenba DNA, it just works how I use it, I don't swing it around, if I take the camera out, I put it down, and that things stands up and easily fits my xt3+battery grip (a lot of backpacks are too narrow). For shoulder bags, i really like that Wotancraft Pilot 7 (love you can stow a jacket etc in the pass through flap). But I do have a small leica sized Billingham (L8?), love that thing, just looks and feels right.
I got the peak straps and love em, but their bags are a little stiff for me and I'm sorta a edc and travel backpack enthusiast.
I'll check the Oberwerth, I'm sorta finicky about should bag feel, I like a softer bag, if its too boxy and stiff, I find myself reaching for something else.

Overwerth uses a German button called Loxx Fastener and I used it for my leather craft. I have an old, but new condition German-made Bag called Cullman, and bought it in the late 90s for around 110$ in Vancouver. Love the bag, just kept gear at home and rarely used it. I liked the Quality Goods. I saw the Bellingham canvas(leather trim bag) for the Fly fishing store. similar bag made by other UK and American companies for fly fishing bag

From years ago I adopted your religion of avoiding weight in cameras and lenses. So I bought cropped sensor mirrorless. Despite the wall of TH-cam exaggeration about full frame (heck so much can be now done in post in Lightroom!), I am sticking with small and light with now six lenses and two cameras. So why should it be different for me with camera bags I thought.
After an insane level of research (as usual) I bought a Ulanzi sling bag 6 litre which can also be comfortably hung as a messager bag. It is very much like the Peak Design sling. Price? Currently US$59. I am delighted with it, love its nondescript groovy (yes that's possible) exterior black smooth surface and many pockets. Holds three lenses and my Sony ZV-E10 and a pile of other supportive gear. Finally, for non-local big tour in cities abroad I bought a Tenba DNA 15-inch in gray. But locally the Ulanzi is all I need photographing on the beaches, suburbs, harbour and inner city of Sydney. Thank you Hugh for your big push years ago about weight reduction, I am your disciple.

Like most photographers who have been shooting for a while, I have way too many bags. In fact, I have two cabinets downstairs and one cabinet upstairs full of bags. And I still have my first bag from many many years ago. I'll forget that I have it. Then when I happen upon it, it's a pleasant surprise. Black is the predominant color. Although there are a few TT Retrospective bags in faded green. Most are shoulder bags which I favor over backpacks, but there are a few of those too. And we can't forget the roller bags. They go by the names Lowepro, Think Tank, Peak Design, and Tenba. Tenba DNA messenger bags are my current favorites. And as much as I love the Tenba bags now, I know that even they might end up on a shelf in a cabinet one day.

Another great video! I must say I have quite a collection of vintage Tamrac bags of the film SLR era. Take them usually on film meets and photo walks. My favorite EDC bag is hands down my Peak Design 10L sling. That bag is so versatile and comfortable I thoroughly enjoy it. My Peak design Black 30L everyday backpack I find not as useful a camera bag. The dividers are too thin for the size bag. Things tend to move about recklessly. It’s handy for day travel or urban travel. For work I have two bags I just love, my Billingham 335 in tan canvas and a Think Tank Airport roller bag. The Billingham I use more when the carry is a tad smaller and the client is bigger! Otherwise it’s the Think Tank all day for large jobs.

I use often F-Stop backpacks for landscape but Billingham are my favorite shoulder bags, I owned the original 500 in the 1980ties, still have a 555 from 2004 in very good condition and ordered this week a special made Hadley Large Pro in black FibreNyte. I recently started to use a black Belroy Venture Sling 10L Camera Edition which can hold my R5 and 3 lenses and is very comfortable to walk around in the city without getting too much attention.

Great review! When it comes to shoulder begs I always try to get the lightest model as long as it has weather proof. I have two Manfrotto Advanced III series bags, the are very basic looking but they are crazy light. The large size one is only 0.92 pounds when empty and the small one is 0.705 pounds. I use either of them depends on how many gear I want to carrying.

I’ve got two Billinghams (445 and Hadley One) and numerous others to boot.
The problem is stealth. Billinghams are instantly recognisable. I use mine only to travel by air where assault and theft is not a likely occurrence.
Once at my destination, my M11 goes in a Pacsafe shoulder bag that actually isn’t a camera bag at all and which has a plethora of anti theft inclusions such as Dyneema strap reinforcement, metal mesh in the fabric and lockable zips.
It just looks like an average tourist bag, not a fancy camera bag.
I do love those Oberwerth bags though…

Hugh your videos always have impeccable timing. Just got an old new stock Billingham 307L to lug that new SL 100-400. I have so many it’s getting a bit unnerving lol. But all my bags have a purpose. The Domke F2 was on of my first bags years ago. And it still looks brand new. Wandred, Wotancraft, Tenba, Think Tank to name a few. Getting to cult status bro.

Like you I have the PD 6L for every day Street shoots, but when meeting clients I tend to dress up my game and bring my ONA. You might do a review of specific straps for the SL bodies, other than the PK straps (not a fan at all) what other straps are available.

I've had a Billingham since the late 1980's, still in perfect shape but I have never grown warm to the center zip...yes waterproof, but very rarely needed...I looked for something smaller, as the billingham was bought when I had a rolleiflex 2.8, a leica r4 and m4p...with lenses and all. My current Fujifilm xpro3 and a few lenses are kind of lost in there... but I was not impressed with the alternatives up to now...

  • @yorkshiremike5083

Billingham bags really are a bag for life. I have a black on black Hadley Pro as a walk about bag and two Billingham 335's which I mix up as camera bags, weekend bags and location bags.
Extremely difficult to get hold of now, but if you can find a set of Billingham shoulder straps that convert your bag into a back pack, it's a versatile landscape kit bag also.
I've hiked with one loaded up with. A Hasselblad 503CW, lenses and a set of Billingham tripod straps without issue. Sure, modern backpacks specifically designed for hiking with camera kit will be ergonomically more functional but some cameras (Blad's and Leica's) deserve bags that complement the camera 👍
    Great episode as always 👌
I'd love to see an episode on camera straps 🙏🏻

the Peak Design Sling V2 6L was my first camera bag! Best birthday gift I got in years. Before that I was generally just using a small hiking bag with camera cubes, but that was not super practical, I just couldn't justify spending the money on an actual camera bag.
I've ad it for a few years now, and I'm still amazed at how resilient that thing is. It went through cities, hikes, vacations, family events, friends gatherings and besides a few scratches at the bottom (where the concrete most likely was more damaged than the bag) it still looks brand new.
I've since turned up to be a hired event photographer much more often that I'd ever think I would, and I was able to make that bag work a few times, holding my X-T2 and my trinity of primes (18mm, 23mm and 56mm) without any problem, filters, spare batteries and SD cards, with even the ability to hook up a tripod at the bottom if I really needed to. And for casual shooting I can carry my personnal effects in it (including wallet, glasses & sunglasses, phone, external battery for the phone, maybe an umbrella or a light raincoat) as well as my everyday carry camera of choice, my old X-T1 with a 7artisan 25mm f/1.8. You said you had to remove one of the dividers, I personally keep both, one being on the very edge on one side, taking virtually no space in tha bag but providing great protection for the stuff inside (also can work as a little shelf to divide a compartment if you use small lenses, but that's unlikely to happen with your setup)
I have since bought a "real" camera bag that is able to hold multiple camera bodies and much more and bigger lenses and accessories, but one thing for sure is that 6L sling really is worth the pretty high (for me) asking price.
(oh by the way, you said it's not that classy, and I would agree for the all blacked-out version, looks very utilitarian. I got gifted the dark blue with brown leather inserts and so far I'm pretty happy with how it looks :)

I too have the Peak Design Sling V2 6L. It has held up very well, and I really love how easy it is to the camera and lenses out on the fly. I have gone hiking and even running with it no problem. It really is very waterproof too, I have gone through a massive downpours with it on and had no problems. It is just the right size for me and carries all my gear comfortably (Sony A7C, Sony 20mm f1.8 G, Sony 40mm f2.5 G, and Sony 85mm f1.8, spare battery, an ultra mini-tripod inside (I don't always bring), lens wipes, and a few other things). Dirt and grim also clean off it fairly well. For running, a trail vest still is better, but I have to store the camera in back part of it, and it is not nearly as easy to pull out the camera or lenses out on the fly. For backpacking the shoulder mount with waist mounted lens pouches / holsters work best. Still the PD Sling V2 6L is my main go to and is where I generally just keep everything stored.

At an eye-watering £677 in the UK the Oberwerth makes the Billingham 225 at £382 look like the bargain of the century. ‘Germantax’ is the word that springs to mind (especially since its US price seems far higher than fx rates would imply) and I certainly don’t have enough years left! 😆😂🤣

Like most of us I have owned and used many bags and have more than my wife has purses. I have been using 2 Wotancraft Pilots (3.5L & 7L) for the past few months to carry my Leica gear and flat out love them. The style and functionality of these bags is just amazing with a wide selection of add on pouches work very well to carry what you may need and remove them to travel lighter..
As far as a double lens holder I just epoxied a pair of cheap ebay rear lens caps together.

Wotancraft fan here too! I have three pilots of various sizes in my collection.
As for dual lens caps they are a brilliant idea. I have a couple dozen and have been making them myself since the 80’s. Two good quality caps ( usually OEM) -the flatter the better and good two part epoxy. I carefully align them so that both lenses face the same way when attached. I still have my first one from the 80’s and have never had one fail!

Amazing video! I also own the PD 6L, and I've been immersed in research because I find it slightly too tight and I'm not a fan of the lack of usable external pockets for quick access. After weeks of research, the perfect balance for me, which combines all your recommendations, is the Hadley Small Pro from Billingham which comes in tomorrow. I think this bag is extremely underrated. If deems success, I'll reserve my PD 6L for more discreet travel use cases / rugged environments.
However, I'm still searching for a well-made, attractive daily sling in the 2-3L range that can hold my X-T5 + 33mm f1.4. I need something more functional and Freeform than the PD 3L, perhaps like a Bellroy, but designed for camera gear. So my setup will look like this:
Main Carry: Billingham Hadley Pro Small
    Rugged / Discreet: PD 6L
    Sling: To Be Determined
PS: I hope you get the Billingham Hadley pro small as well. I can see you loving it.

Looking at the Oberwerth you reviewed here, you may have appreciated the bag I ended up getting some time ago. I went with the no longer available Think Tank Signature 13. It’s styled very much like the Oberwerth but also has an extra zipper cover under the main top cover if you want extra protection from the weather. Not sure why the Think Tank Signature didn’t stick around, and glad I managed to pick one up just before it was discontinued.

I have had the Peak 5L v 1 sling , the zip failed and the waterproofing didn’t make it through a rainpocalypse. The camera survived as did the lenses. Pro (big pro) Peak honoured their lifetime guarantee no quibbles , and gave me a v2 6L black sling like HBs - that is a much more robust piece of kit and home to my xt3, the 23,35 and 16 fujicrons and the 70-300 with an iPad mini - con - a failed camera bag when you’re overseas is a significant pain and this is the first time that has happened to me. I don’t think it will with the v2 as the zip seems better and there’s two now. My billingham with the gfx50r, takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Everybody loves and hates bags!! My favorite of all time is a Lowepro Stealth Reporter (no longer made), but it's too big for international travel. I recent got the Peak Design 6L, and while it's a nice bag, my Nikon Z8 doesn't fit properly in it. so, I also got the Peak Design 10L, and while a little too big, it seems to fit everything I need it to, without being too big.

Great bag review. For walking around I have the Peak Design 10L Sling; the ash colored one. Given the increased threat of robbery or theft, I can now see the wisdom of the black. I might need to spring for that. It can carry a Z7 with a 24-70 f 2.8, and two or three primes. I pined for a Billingham but felt it too beautiful to be missed by those casing their next victim. I have three other bags. I used to wonder how people ended up with so many. Another of life’s minor mysteries has been revealed to me. Still, I am sure my count remains on the low side. I now do my best not to look;….but the Billingham sure is pretty. 😍

A comment on the old “this bag screams camera bag, thus a thief magnet”. I have maybe $2900 worth of gear in the bag (when new only), so used, maybe $2200-2400 used in a billingham bag. Big deal, vs my 100lbs GF toting around a designer bag worth over $4k new. Plus all her cash and credit cards. If you were a thief, whose bag would you steal? What’s easier? What’s more sellable? A Vuitton bag with a designer wallet with cash and cards, vs trying to sell a camera with lenses, where no one buys cameras anymore. I was in Kyoto last week where I seen maybe a 3:400 ratio of tourists carrying a camera, vs 1:4 designer bag to no designer bag.
Get the billingham 2020 bag, that will carry an iPad couple lenses and has a strap on the back to attach to your carry-on luggage. Then when somebody takes pictures of you, you look great as a classy photographer. Stop, worrying about being a thief magnet, just have a cute girlfriend with a more expensive bag.

I really think the future of street photography bags lies in a well thought out internal divider system that you can put in your own bag. Camera bags all stand out as either obvious camera bags or stealth camera bags. I’d love to use an old favourite shoulder bag that looks like nothing in particular and have everything I require nestled neatly inside with padded dividers etc. Much less noticeable which hopefully leads to being a bit more relaxed when out shooting. I don’t like the idea of kneeling down in a gutter with nothing on my mind except the shot whilst someone could creep up and grab my gear.

Photographers always have the wrong camera bag/case, tripod/head, light modifiers. The only solution is to have a few different ones for different use cases. A Peli(can) 1510 to be dragged, wheeled, around and sat on. Looks professional, expensive, and is already heavy when empty. No need for a rain cover. Will float and keep your kit dry. Ideal for location work.
As the Pelican on some airports is treated separately and not always comes up on the regular luggage belt, as it shouts "precious kit inside", the travel alternative is a Tenba roller with a fabric exterior. Looks like a normal carry-on rolling suit-case, has a thick side wall reinforcement, so you can sit on it, and when the airline wants it, can go into the plane's belly. Looks like being in a business trip.
For very quick work, I have a "harness" from Think Tank Photo (TTP). Tool belt like waist belt with connected shoulder straps like suspenders. I have TTP's camera straps with it, that have large metal eyes to hang them off the harness. Ideal for cameras/lenses with proper weather sealing. A couple lens pouches on the hip belt and lens/accessory swaps are easy. Looks commando and that's what it is in a photographic sense. Would not shoot a wedding with it, maybe, because it looks commando, but what the heck, it is fast and functional.
Two out of production TTP products I liked a lot: a shoulder model "Speedster 2" that fits a camera with lens and two other lens size things like lenses or speedlights, plus a few smaller accessories like batteries, ColorChecker Passport. A small 2AA speedlite will fit under one of the additional lenses, still. The trick up its sleeve is its integrated hip belt that can be pulled out of sleeves that hide the halves. This arrests the bag from swinging around and lens swaps are much easier because the should bag stays in one place. It also shifts the weight of the gear from the shoulder to the hips. The other is a Urban disguise bag that looks like the laptop shoulder bag. Yes, fits your tether station notebook, and a lot more, but still looks like a very common case.
Way back, I used to have a Nikon FB-8 that was the cleverest case I ever had. The leatherette aged and became ugly after a couple decades. This had a metal plate in the bottom with 3 Nikon F-mount bayonet holes. If you had a wide angle and nifty fifty in that bottom, then a Nikon F or F2 could hang above that with a lens mounted. It easily held a 300mm among that and there was another camera body holder to the side for a camera that had no lens on it when the long lens in the bottom plate. But lens swaps are only fast if you have one lens position empty all the time for placing the lens to be unmounted into. I have seriously considered to try to recreate something like that by screwing and glueing a couple Z mount rear lens caps to a light, say aircraft grade aluminium, plate that I then fix to the bottom of a case.

I’m looking at my Billingham bag now that I’ve had for 30yrs & still looks good but I hardly use it now. I prefer a backpack as it’s easier as I’m into my 60’s. I currently have a WNDR prvke 31Ltr & Lowe Alpine 18Ltr that I use on day trips. The Lowe is not padded but I use an Ulanzi claw with an Insta360 One R or RS it can also hold my LUMIX S5 as well. I’m just not happy with messenger type bags anymore & have a bad back. The only thing wrong with the prvke 31 is the black interior & wish they would offer a cube that is grey or some other colour so I can see everything in poor light.

I have an insane amount of camera bags. I just seem to hoard the old bags and buy new bags, as I get more kit. Currently, I think II have something like 15 camera bags, 2 video bags and 3 lighting bags and 2 Nikon metal cases. It has got to the point where I am trying to find ways of re-purposing my old bags. Such as turning my first camera bag into a peg bag for hanging up the washing.
My biggest advise when looking to buy a bag, is to look for bags that are a generation behind the newest, and brightest, as often they are half the price or more of the latest bag.
Of all the bags, I own. I think the one that stands out the most would be the Fujifilm LC-X Buffalo Leather Case. It is certainly the least practical bag I own, having a magnetic clasp, which barely works, being too small to carry almost anything and have the least practical side pockets of any bag.
Certainly, I would rarely carry a camera in the bag, but if I go into London and need a man bag, I will reach for the LC-X every time because it is light and exceptionally comfortable to carry around.

I use a Billingham 335 for Nikon with multiple lens and flash. If it’s a one lens attached to the camera then the Billingham S4 is perfect. If I remember correctly the z9 with the 300PF fits and so does the Z6ll with the new 100 - 400. Flying or traveling with a massive setup then I need a roller. Think Tank Airport Advantage is super light. Shooting sideline where it’s filthy… Ona camo is stealth. But my favorite setup is the Billingham L2 aka the Alice with an avea 5 attached for a Leica Monochrom and multiple lens. Yep, it takes a camera bag village when you shoot multiple systems in various conditions. Good luck.

Hugh You're young. You have time. I consider you a Bag Virgin, barely immersed in the addiction that hoards bags of every description because you never know.... I see that Oberwerth would never dare spell it Oberworth cause it ain't. It is an unnecessary indulgence, the money better spent on what it intends to contain unless money is fairly oozing out of one's pockets looking for some place to go. For size, look at Hadley Small, or Artist & Artisans from Japan if you like red interiors, or Italian leather embracing Gitzo's messenger or matching backpack. Then there is the whole Think Tank Retrospective line, a size for everyone. The Oberwerth is one of those bags that dictate your equipment rather than the other way around. Who? What, after all, is running the show? The great Billingham gives choice in their F 1.4 and F 2.8 bags with wider openings from back to front, very convenient, beautiful bags. Ona makes gorgeous bags if gorgeous is your thing. And Wotancraft, making bags of extraordinary innovation and handsome in the bargain. Your hard case roller is hard, yes, stylish NO. Try a Lowepro Whistler - stunning and very practical. Consider Vanguard bags, with many design firsts or KATA, may they rest in peace. I am awash in bags. I could be taken away by people in white coats at any time, echoes of my insane laughter bouncing off the walls. In my 88th year, I have as much interest in lifetime guarantees as I have in green bananas. In fact, it's all bananas. Stick with Billingham, fabulous designs, tremendous choice, all handsome and perfectly crafted. Be grand. Save your grand. You have much ahead. Enjoy!

The nervous photographer kneels before the awesome bag and says, "Mr. Oberwerth, Madam... (gender is not clear, probably female). The Oberwerth camera bag is a thousand bucks in the U.S. but 12 - 1300 in Canada, where the tax authorities, at audit, demand, "You paid twelve hundred dollars for a Bag? A BAG! And you want to write this off? It doesn't DO anything. It doesn't take pictures. It doesn't process them. It is a container. A BOX." I digress.
The supplicant licks his drying lips and in a voice redolent with humility and great respect, "I have been thinking about a 24 to..." "NO", says the uber deluxe bag, now coming to the question most teenage women one day will ask, "You want to put WHAT, WHERE?" The photographer, trembling shows a picture of a Sigma 24 - 70mm 2.8 lens and Oberwerth, losing the Germanic Cool that is fully half of its perceived value, declares. "You will not put that THING in me!!!"
So, there you have it, a camera bag that requires a commitment so enormous that it is bequeathed the responsibility for designing the equipment package it will deem to carry. Large lenses like many Sony GMs are out so lesser lenses must be applied thanks to the autocratic demands of a simple bag, now shaping this photographer's sinking career. I don't want to say that the Germans won the war exactly, but if the power of this bag is anything to go by, revenge is a dish being served cold. Beware the OBERWERTH!
