I really don’t want to fork out extra money for a new tv just to have this service, as there is nothing wrong with mine. I hope they change their mind to make it backward compatible in the future.
It won't be backwards compatible, but that said your TV is not going to lose channels either. Manufacturers may release a set top box if you really want the new features, but it won't be that much of a change in service to warrant the costs.
Given that I haven't watched much TV in the last couple of decades, my current TV (which I normally use as a computer monitor) is more likely to be exchanged for a computer monitor. In fact I haven't really watched TV since Robot Wars made its brief return some years ago. If I need to watch anything, all of the public service channels offer an online service which my computer is perfectly capable of picking up.
I hope if they make any changes in future to channel order there will be a selection of automatic presets and "classic" order setting so that my 90 year old grandmother can still rely on going BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 etc. She'll never recover if for say pressing button 3 takes her to BBC3 instead of ITV1 or selecting 5 suddenly becomes More4. She's just holding it together remembering that channel 46 is challenge
I remember helping a visually impaired relative who was lost when they last had a channel renumbering. I had to rescan and find four or five "lost" channels for him. The blind are always forgotten in exercises like this
I don't think ITV1 will give up it channel 3 slot as it has PSB Commitment and BBC3 doesn't broadcast during the day anyway, So what would be the point of an empty slot along with BBC1 BBC2 CH4 and 5 anyway.
You should (if they do the job right) be able to define your own channel lists and orders, along with the ability to export/import/share/backup them. So you could set up a channel list for your older relatives or your childrens TVs that could be imported and locked, so when they get a new TV you could just import the new list and their new TV just works right away.
It would be nice if Freely was also available on laptop or desktop pc as an app. That way, it's accessible to a lot of people who don't want to go out and buy a new telly. I just bought one in November there and don't fancy an upgrade for quite a few years yet. I used to use kappang a lot on my phone and tablet and pc before it died as I don't get a lot of terrastrial channels where I stay because of living in a dip. My friends who live a mile away have double the channels I get currently. All i wanted was challenge tv and now i hope freely has it on launch. 😅
I get the feeling that "for manufacturer's use" could be for the likes of BT TV using the Freely for broadcasting stuff they have as subscription services, such as sports and movie channels
I think they're playing the long game here. They're not expecting mass uptake instantly, but know it's the only way forward. Less people are connecting their TVs to ariels. Ariel transmission already feels like an outdated concept in 2024. Whether it be 10 years or 20 years, DTV signals will be sold off (like the spare analogue signals were sold to phone companies etc). Nobody needs Freely now, but we all will eventually. People couldn't access Freeview without making the effort to buy a box or new TV at first. Not everyone wanted or needed it. A decade later it was the norm, and indeed the only way for many to watch TV for free. We're just seeing the same again here.
I love how when you watch the ITV video about freely they talk about how youd need an aerial to watch TV currently - but then they show a satellite dish 🤦♀️🤦♂️ I guess even the people who do TV dont know how it works
My frustration with the terrestrial channels on catch up is the sound quality? Freesat carries 5.1 (but not for ITV who never get their act together (as to the premium streaming services) but iPlayer etc just bog standard stereo?
The regional ones being that high up is probably from how freesat does regional where there are a bunch of regional channels in the 700 range and is remapped locally depending on what the user configures
I'm assuming this will be HD only, as currently the 5 main channels on Freeview (1-5) have separate HD versions (101-105), but there was no mention of this on the Freely channel numbering so presumably it'll be the HD versions. There seems little point in having SD duplicates on a new TV service. I can't see many people going out and buying a new TV just to get Freely, especially while this cost of living crisis continues, so if they want people to take up the new service they'll either have to come up with a cheaper set-top box version or maybe an app for an existing streaming device.
I have read that they are planning to end the SD channels soon anyway. Just hope the BBC can sort out their regional news broadcasts for the HD channels before that happens lol.
@@MINKIN2 My region ITV news Anglia from Sandy Heath tv transmitter needs to sort out their HD Services before they switch off the SD Channels as i get the wrong region hundreds miles from where i live as i pick up ITV Meridian.

Does this mean a channel could have 5 different numbers now - Freeview, Freesat, cable, Sky & Freely? Also, if they're ordered based on BARB ratings, does that mean a channel's number could move up and down?
I really don’t like how is it going to force us to search for channels with the rating data channels selection thingy (let’s just call it RDCS) so RDCS is going to sort channels via how much people watch them so guess memorising the channels Number won’t be useful anymore
I was wondering about that as I’m blind. I can use the voice activated function and up and down buttons on the Sky box in the living room but I can’t use the menus. This will deliberately shut out people who cannot afford the prohibitely expensive Freely equipped TV's and say "tough, it's our way or lose out". I don't agree with it. I would rather update Freeview to DVB-UHD transmission (the standard that the broadcasters and transmission providers worked on and even hammered into a possible technical standard to implement but was deliberately dumped) and offer Ultra HD quality channels over terrestrial networks or switch Freeview to all DVB-T2 and offer even more channel capacity.
No-one is getting shut out. But they would do if everything was dumped to make way for UHD as you suggest. The small niche that wants UHD can afford broadband and streaming sticks, terrestrial isn't for them.
@anthonyperkin7556, No one is being shut out, TV Transmission is costing the broadcasters money and are trying to cut cost by moving away from transmitter tv site and broadcast over the internet instead, It be some years before everyone move over watching tv over the internet.

9:02 I’m guessing so freely is 0-999 Ip delivered is above 1001 and it’s like a blocker between the categories so you know when you’ve switched past freely and onto ip delivered As it said at the bottom some channels will be reserved so that the 1st music channel is 401 instead of 400
Hi Adam, just to let you know that the BBC are selling off its record library and other vintage stuff. Thought you may like to know. I think it’s sad. All the best Mick
It's largely just a rebrand of Freeview like Youview was to update the basic TV standards. Your TV will viewing habits are not going to change, and more likely your LG can do more already than Freely is planned to do.
I wonder if the lack of a Sport section is simply down to the lack of free-to-air sports channels? I think Freesports is now dead, so other than that - any free TV sports are on BBC 1/2, ITV/ITV4 or Channel 4 - which will all be categorised as Entertainment.
With it only launching on "compatible" TVs and no general app available, I would get less excited about the "launch" of this than getting the latest newsletter from the local garden centre through the post advertising a couple of new parking spaces.
I tore my tv ariel out in 2014 and have not had any uk terrestrial tv in my home since, and it has been the best thing ever, it was also great for your well being as no more murder and death brought into your home 24/7 by the news channels, and no more reality, game shows, cooking shows, soaps, selling junk.........it has been so great....best thing i ever did, everyone in the UK needs to do this.
This sounds like a rehash of old fashioned ideas. Linear TV viewing figures are falling year on year and I don’t think this will do anything to stop that decline The future will be based on programmes not channels, the streamers have shown the way and traditional broadcasters should follow.
"Freely" so i have to purchase a new TV, get a TV licence and get an Internet subscription? That doesn't sound free to me should change its name to "costly " epic fail !
I have to agree with you on the fact that placing the promotional channels randomly in between the entertainment channels is quite the weird choice. Also, with the channel grouping, I'm oddly reminded of Sky Digital. Is it just me?
It's not free if you have to pay to receive it by getting a new TV! Does this mean that your old telly will stop receiving terrestrial tv? I have an old toshiba telly and it receives terrestrial fine, & not branded as Freeview at all. Thinking of upgrading to a new Samsung but if I buy it & it's not freely compatible, does this mean I won't be able to receive terrestrial tv? Sorry.. a bit confused! 🤔
For channels 8 and 9 I don't know what they'll do in Northern Ireland as the only local tv is UTV which was bought out by itv, and has effectively become itv 1 (even showing itv branding). There is NVTV, but that's only in Belfast, so we'll just have to see what happens.
Nice video Adam. You are a great TH-camr and creator and your videos rock. By the way, i used to be known as Joseph Bayliss's Media Fun House but i don't have that channel anymore. Do you remember me?
Perhaps the app will be available on firestick and Apple TV. Eventually this will replace terrestrial tv so there is a long game to play with this new service. BARB ratings will be a thing of the past, as the broadcaster will be able to monitor what is being watched by who and when.
There are plenty of areas where Freeview channels are limited to the basic channels. So this seems just another excuse to sell different tvs. Yet another con really. Digital came in like decimalisation came in. Less choice and everything more expensive.
13:40 So looking at that list, the channels will still be fragmented like they are now. The channels should be grouped together by broadcaster. So BBC channels, then ITV channels, then Channel 4 channels, then Channel 5 channels, then commercial channels. I don't care what the channel number is. Everyone just uses the EPG anyway. The actual number doesn't matter.
Will almost certainly be a flop unless mainstream FTA channels brings back live sporting events which will bring in an audience such as The Ashes cricket or Open Golf championships. They won't though as they are very expensive live outside broadcasts.
At least no mention of needing to set up yet another account for this, which is good. However, needing a whole new tv for this is absolute bobbins! If its not available on my amazon fire stick i aint bothering until it is. End of
You do know they could never never detect a signal to begin with over an aerial right? It was only because people actually let them in the door or felt guilty and confessed that they catch people.
Are there any music channels left? There are none on freeview. 4music went the way of the dinosaur a long time ago and the original ones have been gone for decades. MTV is an entertainment channel now not music or at least it should be classed as such because really its only a vehicle for the Kardashians and it isnt on freeview anyway
Plus 1 channels are better because streaming channels take forever to upload stuff, for example itv can take nearly a day to upload an episode of I’m a celebrity, also if you still use sky hd and you can only record one programme whilst watching another channel then it makes good use of being able to use the plus 1 channel to reschedule clashes
Tbh - so far sounds like a rejig and maybe a new epg front end, but not much different screaming with how Tvs with Freeview can also access IP tv services and has the shift bit for Tvs past 2022 - with HD offerings, doesn't scream much different in all honesty (maybe just adding in the dtv standard for streaming into the Hybrid model, but not breaking the bank in new ideas is it. All just marketing guff rebrand and pushing people to get new tv for what will be I guess for the dvt b-i broadcasting standard plus the usual mpeg and mp4 etc
Any free movie channels will be in the Entertainment section. There really is no comparison with Sky as they are a contract/subscription service that offer their own movie channel packages.
New hardware needed make it a no go for most, even if sets from 2020 and newer were updated that still leaves 75% of the population scratching thier heads at what they need to do/get to use the service, got parents still fighting with old Youview boxes trying to watch stuff on demand unsuccessfully... the young have moved onto greener streaming pastures and the older folks won't upgrade for seemingly no reason Freely is Dead before its even started.. as for me, theres no channels for my prefered content... Anime and frankly i won't be buying a licence again even if they do add a channel for it, Cruncyroll has me covered for now
15:04 It’s probably not great news for the Irish ☘️ using Freesat 😮 Whenever Freesat goes that will cause issues in Southern Ireland 🇮🇪 although maybe the technology will have made the whole idea of Traditional TV put to bed then.
Regarding movies and sport - particularly sport - Sky has a complete absolute stranglehold on both movies fresh from the cinema and home video market and would never allow its channels to be made available for free - live football, other than the league or FA Cup Final is exclusive to Sky, with terrestrial broadcasters limited to only highlights shown within the sports section of news bulletins - even the Saturday afternoon football matches can be heard on local radio in the relevant area - watch what happens when you try to listen to a match featuring the team you support from outside of where you live! Unless it’s on 5 Live or 5 Live Sports Extra, you’ve got no chance of even hearing it!
@@Connie_TinuityErrorBut I was responding to the part in which Sky would never put their channels on Freeview and Freesat by disputing it with those aforementioned channels.
If I've understood everything correctly, the channel allocations are going to be superfluous for one general(ly inane) reason: more and more newer TVs have remotes which do not have number pads, so you will have to scroll down the list to get to a particular channel. Even if they bundle genres together and you get to find a channel under a particular genre heading, you can't instantly change the channel (for example) from a generalist channel to a radio channel. There's a whole process, an entire rigmarole. Even to change from BBC One to itv1 isn't instant. I could well be going off on some irrelevant tangent, but friends of mine already have bought brand-new TVs in the past three years for which the remotes do not have number pads. It's fine for people who watch content on streaming platforms, but the experience for Freeview, Freesat, and eventually this "Freely" service, is dulled by the fact that manufacturers are going fairly close to full steam ahead on pushing the internet connectivity and streaming platforms, and thus removing the number pads from the remote controls of their newest television sets.
Everyone TV doesn't own the name Freeview. If you look up the owners of Everyone TV', and the owners of Freeview, you'll see a key difference that explains why they can't just add satellite and streaming to Freeview, but need a whole new brand.
Tbh I only really have two seconds - when will it be available and will a cheap (or free if you have a streaming dongle) way of accessing this without buying a new TV be available. I don't have cabling for aerials around the house and maintaining TV Headend on Raspberry Pis has proven to be a PITA. The idea that you need a new set is ridiculous - there surely has to be a dongle of some description. I refuse to change out all my TVs, especially if the initial sets with the service are Chinese junk like Hisense and TCL.
Oh hell naw if they do that I'll be cutting the tv license out and complaining. it causes so many problems for people that can't afford to pay for premium tv (virgin, sky,bt), can't afford a new tv all together (i know some still using frevew boxes) or have only just bought a TV and said TV won't even get a software update. Hopefully they never phase out freeview/terrestrial digital tv. I can understand them turning off analogue TV but i hope to high hell they either make tv manufacturers update all (smart/wifi/ethernet) compatible tv's to support freely and or keep freeview alive as long as possible. Change is good sometimes but this is not needed at all. Freeview just worked, yees it was clunky, yes it had random channel list orders but it just worked.
This simliar to what ameircan is doing wiht NEXT TV ATSC over the air online. Freely tv will be a big step to ending freeview once all users have a freely tv or a scheme like digital switchover with scapping of old tv for new one, Mark end means its the end of the regular channels range then the IPTV channels start
Just like you don’t get our system, we don’t get yours. ATSC 3.0 and also ATSC 1.0, as well as analog TV, are capable of getting encoded to condition the access to subscribers. The thing is that many of the ATSC 3.0 stations have been testing the feature and many scrambled channels appear in their broadcast. Scrambling over-the-air TV signals has never caught on and ATSC 3.0 might be held back for a while or even phased out before its wider implementation due to royalty fees that the patent holder charges to the TV manufacturers. TV will still be free plug and play in NA for a while.
I think the channel number will become irrelevant since channels are grouped by genre / name. I'm assuming this will be available in a browser and hopefully everything available in HD?
As far as I can tell, this is only a tv set system, live streaming and catch up / demand.. For any tv channel that does not have a catchup servce we will require a PVR to record / time shift programs from freeview broadcasts.. However when they phase out freeview, there will be notthing to record. It's a shame that they are also making it regional, I would like to have the ability to watch other areas .there is an oppertunity here to make somthing good, but i'm prety sure they will F***k it up.
Stupid making it require new TVs, they could have at least allowed streaming combined with terrestrial just via a new app on most existing smart TVs even if some of the features were missing. No doubt there will be set up boxes as a bridge that like Freeview should be cheap, if not then it's even more ridiculous.
I really don’t want to fork out extra money for a new tv just to have this service, as there is nothing wrong with mine. I hope they change their mind to make it backward compatible in the future.

If Adam Buxton and Elvis The Alien had a baby it would surely look like our very own Mr.Martyn.
I suspect promotional channels may be used for special events. For example Wimbledon, world cup, royal events etc
9:02 I’m guessing so freely is 0-999
Ip delivered is above 1001 and it’s like a blocker between the categories so you know when you’ve switched past freely and onto ip delivered
As it said at the bottom some channels will be reserved so that the 1st music channel is 401 instead of 400
Hi Adam, just to let you know that the BBC are selling off its record library and other vintage stuff. Thought you may like to know. I think it’s sad. All the best Mick
Thanks Mick! I saw this and did have a look, sadly anything I'd be after is already well past my price range 😂

What will owners of existing Freeview equipment have as their programme guide after Freely launches?
Surely they’ve got to bring out an app, I’ve got an LG Oled, no way am I buying a new tv just for freely.
It's largely just a rebrand of Freeview like Youview was to update the basic TV standards. Your TV will viewing habits are not going to change, and more likely your LG can do more already than Freely is planned to do.
They will probably do a set top box with freely on it like you can buy for Freeview
I’ve never heard genre pronounced that way before 😅 but great info. Thank you!
Still need a tv license though.. so not free.. freely available, as long as you pay.
And you’ll still need to pay the BBC to watch any of those hundreds of channels! No thanks.
Please do an ITV Digital documentary
I wonder if the lack of a Sport section is simply down to the lack of free-to-air sports channels? I think Freesports is now dead, so other than that - any free TV sports are on BBC 1/2, ITV/ITV4 or Channel 4 - which will all be categorised as Entertainment.
Freesports is still around but under the name Viaplay Xtra.
Apparently, Freesports is due to return some time in 2024.
This may be a weird question but....
When is the Sunday Catch Up coming back?
There is absolutely nothing about UK TV that can get be "excited " but getting rid of an aerial is a plus.
It's not going to change a thing for existing broadcasts
For channels 8 and 9 I don't know what they'll do in Northern Ireland as the only local tv is UTV which was bought out by itv, and has effectively become itv 1 (even showing itv branding). There is NVTV, but that's only in Belfast, so we'll just have to see what happens.
Maybe TG4 if they can sort the rights out with the Irish gov?
I think they will probably do a set top box with freely on it like you can buy for Freeview for people who don't want to go out and buy a new TV
If the new box had extra HDMI inputs it would be a bonus too.
Seeing ITV3 as Channel 7 would feel viscerally wrong to me
yeah it's so irrelevant 💀
Which channel slot will ITV4 Go to.
Would you know if the Great Movie channels showing old films are going to be on Freely?
This sounds DOA like most of the networks sadly...
I hope a set top box will be available so you don’t have buy a new TV.
Freely... restricted.
Are tvs with freeview going to be obsolete?
No.
I have not watched any TV for 13 years i have no idea why i watched this but it's very interesting.
Freely just sounds like a mashup of Freeview and Wheely.
Adam , what is the name of the itv news presenter talking about Freely in the footage in this video, i cannot remember her name!
There are plenty of areas where Freeview channels are limited to the basic channels. So this seems just another excuse to sell different tvs. Yet another con really. Digital came in like decimalisation came in. Less choice and everything more expensive.
I’m just surprised that tv coming to an end and we never got a Channel 6 or a BTV
End of
I P Freely. Immature i know but couldn't resist.
Not all shows are on Catchup.
Could 31 be shared between BBC, ITV, C4, C5 to use as extra during say big sporting events, Where would Sky Mix, Sky Arts & Sky Sports Mix fit in?
Will be interesting to know how tv licensing will patrol this as it’s all streaming over the internet
They won’t
You do know they could never never detect a signal to begin with over an aerial right? It was only because people actually let them in the door or felt guilty and confessed that they catch people.
Channel 4 is on 8 in Wales already, S4C on 4….so that’s the same 😊
Id like to see more fast channels added to the list, bbc creating some. uktv do it on samsung tv plus & ITVX do.
What’s a fast channel?
Will freeview still continue on your existing tv when freely comes in ?
My guess is it will initially! It's going to take a long time to Phase out Freeview as tens of millions of homes still use it!
Freely needs to have an Android/iOS app more so Android TV ect...
4Music took the place of Box Hits back in August 2022 with their old channel space now occupied by E4 Extra.
I’ll stick with my Sky Q thanks.
It's not free if you need the internet 🤷 Sets a precedent & an end of fta TV, dead in the water before it starts.
I can do this now with my Enigma box.
S4C is already channel 4 in Wales on freeview
Plus 1 channels are better because streaming channels take forever to upload stuff, for example itv can take nearly a day to upload an episode of I’m a celebrity, also if you still use sky hd and you can only record one programme whilst watching another channel then it makes good use of being able to use the plus 1 channel to reschedule clashes
I like plus 1 channels because I like This Morning but often miss the start as I’m a night owl/lazy sod and sleep in. 🛌
Request: How Freevee Launch The Tv Network | What Is This
Tbh - so far sounds like a rejig and maybe a new epg front end, but not much different screaming with how Tvs with Freeview can also access IP tv services and has the shift bit for Tvs past 2022 - with HD offerings, doesn't scream much different in all honesty (maybe just adding in the dtv standard for streaming into the Hybrid model, but not breaking the bank in new ideas is it. All just marketing guff rebrand and pushing people to get new tv for what will be I guess for the dvt b-i broadcasting standard plus the usual mpeg and mp4 etc
No sign of a Movies section on Freely, but there is on Sky
Any free movie channels will be in the Entertainment section. There really is no comparison with Sky as they are a contract/subscription service that offer their own movie channel packages.
New hardware needed make it a no go for most, even if sets from 2020 and newer were updated that still leaves 75% of the population scratching thier heads at what they need to do/get to use the service, got parents still fighting with old Youview boxes trying to watch stuff on demand unsuccessfully... the young have moved onto greener streaming pastures and the older folks won't upgrade for seemingly no reason
Freely is Dead before its even started..
as for me, theres no channels for my prefered content... Anime and frankly i won't be buying a licence again even if they do add a channel for it, Cruncyroll has me covered for now
So will it mean a freeview tv will be redundant, this is ridiculous luckily I don't watch any live TV so don't nerd a licence
not sure why they wouldnt just do an app for a smart tv or streaming stick
With the exception of Sky News, Sky Mix, Sky Arts and Challenge, that is.
@@MateusHonrado yes but those channels never shows any fresh movies or live sport
@@Connie_TinuityErrorBut I was responding to the part in which Sky would never put their channels on Freeview and Freesat by disputing it with those aforementioned channels.
Who is this woman Jann Ruz? She seems incredibly busy.
Why couldn't they just rearrange the channels and keep calling it Freeview? Don't get it...
Everyone TV doesn't own the name Freeview.
If you look up the owners of Everyone TV', and the owners of Freeview, you'll see a key difference that explains why they can't just add satellite and streaming to Freeview, but need a whole new brand.
So we all got to buy new tvs? So what eill happen to freeview?
Just let me customise my own list of chanels ffs
Tbh I only really have two seconds - when will it be available and will a cheap (or free if you have a streaming dongle) way of accessing this without buying a new TV be available. I don't have cabling for aerials around the house and maintaining TV Headend on Raspberry Pis has proven to be a PITA. The idea that you need a new set is ridiculous - there surely has to be a dongle of some description. I refuse to change out all my TVs, especially if the initial sets with the service are Chinese junk like Hisense and TCL.
What happens when people don't have internet connection
