  • Maroons are enslaved Africans that escaped from plantations and created communities. There have been historical details that state that the name was derived from words that meant ‘escaped slaves, wild or unruly'.
The term, though it was widely used, it is mainly attributed to enslaved Africans who escaped. Maroons could be found in many Caribbean countries such as Jamaica, Surinam, Cuba, Haiti and Belize. This video will specifically be talking about those in Jamaica.
It must be noted that it was commonplace for enslaved Africans to escape and maintain their freedom. The war between the Spanish and the English was a core factor in the increase of maroon settlements in Jamaica. In 1655, the British invasion caused African slaves to escape, as well as made the Spanish release slaves. Some slaves were even tasked to join the fight against the British.
In escaping, the maroons took to the mountainous parts of the island that were inaccessible, remote, richly vegetated and hilly. This made it difficult for them to be caught. Communities were formed with indigenous persons and grew as there was a constant stream of enslaved Africans who escaped the plantations.
Maroons were mainly from West and Central Africa. With the addition of the indigenous people, the creation of the communities led to cultural syncretism as there were many different ethnic groups. This created a cultural explosion of languages, foods, religion and other aspects.
For sustenance, maroons planted crops, hunted and also raided plantations. Slaves on the plantations assisted the maroons by smuggling arms, selling them various products and offering crucial intelligence.
