I think Cho Chang is a hugely important character when you consider the typical reading audience. These books were meant for kids growing alongside Harry. Cho Chang is an important lesson that just because you love someone, or think you do because they are physically attractive, doesn't mean you will always end up with them.
Fluffymagicman I can echo that. Through my first read she became my favorite for a while. Even after the whole fallout. However her sections in the books has little re-read value. Especially now that I’m older.
Yeah that’s why I have respect for her however I will say I wouldn’t complain if they had spent more time with Harry and Ginny and less time with Cho. Though I may be a bit biased because Ginny’s one of my favorites.
The thing is while Cho Chang did have a very interesting and emotional character arc, i always felt like it did't really belong in a Harry Potter book. The whole having a crush on one person, you end up loving someone else, then they die and you end up rebound dating the person you originally liked and then feel all guilty about it thing really never felt right in a Harry Potter book and did take up way too much page space.
Snape Victorious is the chapter where he is FINALLY the DADA professor. Also the chapter where he takes away 70 POINTS from Harry for being late and in muggle clothing...when there was still blood on Harry's nose from Draco. And people say Dumbledore is unfair!
@@owenjames8575 no, it's more like people always say Dumbledore favors Gryffindors, giving them extra point and all. But Snape unfairly takes away so many points and no one bats an eye.

Snape is brutal, and while we are shown moments where he appears to favor Slytherin, we don't see what he's like any other time when it comes to Slytherin. I can't imagine he isn't extremely strict as the leader of Slytherin. Also, as the houses embody different aspects of people, it could very well be that Slytherin students get rewarded for behaving... like a Slytherin XD
Cho is a complicated character to critique. I think she's a good person at heart, but she is very emotional and some of her behavior can border on manipulative (such as extreme jealousy towards Hermione in particular). However, I don't think she intents malice with her actions. I think the biggest problem with her, and Harry's interactions with her, is that they tried dating each other at the wrong time in their lives, when they were both going through some very hard stuff that they processed differently. During OOTP, Cho's boyfriend is DEAD after all, that's not an easy thing to be dealing with. We see how much the whole experience traumatized Harry, but Cedric probably meant even more to Cho. (Also, she and Cedric started dating AFTER the Yule Ball - which explains why Cho was sad that she missed out on asking Harry. I guess she liked both, but Cho and Cedric weren't dating at the time.) Back to Harry and Cho and their attempt at a relationship - Harry has always been someone who deals with his issues through humor, and having a good time to shake things off. There's a reason Ron is his best friend. The dude is hilarious, in a way that can put Harry at ease very quickly. Harry was having major traumatic stress in OOTP and when he started dating Cho, I think he expected/hoped that she would be able to relieve some of that stress. But that didn't happen. Because Cho was too depressed herself to be funny or supportive in a way that Harry needed (or it could be that she isn't very funny in general, which is absolutely fine but clearly a turn off point for Harry). She was very emotional - much more emotional than Harry could handle at that point in his life, and like you guys pointed out, Cho needed to talk about her emotions while Harry spent most of the book wanting desperately to NOT talk about his emotions. Harry didn't know enough about Cho to know that that was going to happen, as he's always admired her from a distance. But when he tries dating her, it quickly becomes clear that their dynamic doesn't work. But then there is Ginny. She's optimistic, playful, and her quips are often hilarious. Furthermore, Ginny knows how to talk to Harry. Ginny doesn't beat around the bush or tries to be passive-agressive towards Harry, and she puts aside her own issues so she can help Harry. Ginny and Harry have a few interactions in OOTP that are very meaningful. The two biggest being 1) In Grimmauld Place after Arthur gets attacked 2) In the Library during Easter when Harry needs to talk to Sirius. In these moments especially, it is clear that Harry feels a sense of comfort with Ginny, and that he is able to communicate with her in a very healthy fashion. There's a lot more subtle things going on between Harry in Ginny, even before OOTP, and she is far from shoe-horned in. Narratively, I do sort of agree that too much time was spent on Cho, and not enough with Ginny. The 'arc' with Cho was definitely necessary for Harry's character, but maybe it could have been balanced out a bit better. I would have liked to see more interaction between Harry and Ginny; we know that it IS there - like that time they dated in HBP where they frequently hung out, or before that when he spent loads of time with her at the Burrow (again in HBP) - but I'm a sucker for conversations between these two because of how well they play off of each other. I'd have liked to see more in that regard. TL:DR Cho is a good person who went through a lot of things that are hard to process for a teenager, but she wasn't quite right for Harry. They started dating when they were both at a very low point in their life and their expectations going in didn't match. Neither could give what the other needed, but in the end, they definitely liked and respected each other. I think they could have been friends post-war, but that is hard to say.

I agree that while she is a complex character, _the fact she is the ONLY major Asian character doesn't put Asians in a positive light._ (And don't even get me started on being placed in the 'Cho Chang' spot… I can't begin to express how many times I've been put in that position…)
Harry is not very good at picking up social cues. I think it's because he never had friends growing up and the Dursley's never talked to him much. So Cho's sensitivity and subtle mannerisms completely passed him. Harry also usually expresses his displeasure by bellowing and shouting; most likely picked up from Vernin. So with Cho she would be very intimidated by that. Also that she refused to be angry at her friend after she betrayed the DA was a big thing. She's just too sweet for her own good. Harry is a good person at heart but he is very capable of hatred. All in all I think Cho has one or more sisters. She really grew up with females. Ginny by contrast has 6 brothers and so has been surrounded by males her entire life. She really understands males and her thinking is almost more masculine than feminine.

Love these quizzes!! I've got some clarifications for you: - 9 - Ginny and Harry first kiss after they've won the Quidditch Cup. This doesn't happen on the field, because Harry is in detention with Snape for using Sectumsempra on Draco. So Ginny becomes seeker (and captain?) for the final match and when Harry goes back to the common room he finds out they won and there's the euforic atmosphere you were talking about. - 13 - Harry accidentally touched Ginny when sneaking through the portrait hole under the Invisibility Cloak and after taking Felix Felicis. Ginny thinks this is Dean pushing her, and says he always does that, Dean tries to defend himself because he did actually not touch her this time. That's all we know about the argument that led to the breakup, because the portrait hole closes after Harry at that point. - 16 - Hestia Jones is a member of the Order of the Phoenix. She was part of the Advance Guard who took Harry to Grimmauld Place in the beginning of book five and she's one of the people who goes with the Dursleys to protect them in book seven. - 28 - 'Snape Victorious' is about Snape getting the DADA teaching post, so it's at the beginning of the book. They first kiss in 'Sectumsempra' is at the end of the chapter. It's the chapter in which the fight with Draco occurs, followed by Harry being punished and serving detention during the last Quidditch match of the year. The chapter then ends with Harry going into the common room and kissing Ginny.
I think Ginny didn't become Captain as Harry wasn't kicked from the team. Snape just made sure to have his detention on the same time as the match happens so Gryffindor would be at disadvantage.

I just went back and watched a ton of their original videos. Watch all the ones where Ben talks about aquariums. He practically screams Ravenclaw in those. I think its just that J listens to the audio books constantly.
@@mollie.28.15 yes we do say both in the UK because our language is largely influenced by American sources e.g. tv/film etc. Therefore, the term 'making out' has been adopted into the UK english vocabulary. To be honest it sounds better than snogging lol so it makes sense many people prefer to use 'making out'
Same! I’ve also read a theory in the past about Ron being a Seer. I honestly could not stand Cho Chang throughout the books/movies. She’s practically useless. Ginny was such a better character in the books. I really liked Ben’s take on her at the end of the video. A full video analyzing her terrible and boring character would be great!
In the chapter sectumsepra Harry uses it on draco and can't go to the quitich match because of detention. He comes back to the common room and found out Gryffindor won and kissed Ginny
I think you're being a bit unfair to Cho. Remember she's 15/16 years old in goblet, and it's possible to have a crush on multiple people at the same time. Plus it's not as if Harry were very clear about how he felt about her, they barely even had a conversation before the yule ball! So don't blame Cho for accepting a date proposal when she didn't even know if she could expect another one.
@@miaclarke6859 There's literally a line of dialogue to answer your question that (I think) they took word for word for the movie. It's Hermione's line, feel free to look it up. That said, I still don't think she should have used Harry in an attempt to move on (which is exactly what I think she was doing whether she knows it or not is up for debate).
No I have to interject, I think Cho Chang as a character is important to the story. Her side-plot is about how falling in love feels (yes, we do get that with Ginny too) but it is about telling teenagers that they are not alone in feeling extremely awkward in this situation. It tells us that not every person we feel drawn to has to be our one true love (and that in a universe that is all about the one true love! Think about Snape, James, Tonks!) It tells us that everybody has stories about relationships that went wrong. Even Harry - the chosen one. And there is another thing: We tend to idolise people when we fall in love but not yet know them. Harry does that with Cho! But he learns about her and sees that she is just a normal woman with imperfections and troubles. This is a valuable message. Still, the whole Cho thing is extremely awkward to watch xD

Got 17 points. Some were tricky because I haven't read them more than once in English, only a million times in Swedish. And have never thought of Cho that way, but I'd spontaneously object (or play devil's advocate) by saying that it would be lame if Harry just got his future wife straight away without experiencing a common heartbreak first. It's actually a bit too Disney that he even ends up with Ginny, considering how everything else is just such a happy ending for him. Also, it gives Cedric's death more of an impact, introduces a Ravenclaw that we can later relate to in D.A and actually adds to Ginny's story arch by showing the reader that even in the darkest times (when Harry dates Cho) and a future with your biggest love (Harry) seems impossible, it can still happen. Don't lose hope, love will always win, etc. (except for Snape).
While I don´t like Cho, I see her importance as this: Harry´s romance with her was awkward and painful (for us to watch). But now imagine he goes through this with Ginny... She was kind of a "test run" for Harry. PS: And yes, it was Cho´s fault for a lot of things, but Potter wasn´t that great either.
About question 28: After Harry attacs Draco in the bathroom, he gets detention by Snape and thus misses the final Quidditch match. Afterwards he comes to the common room where everyone celebrates and they kiss.
I remembered that too, but like they said, it seemed to be so much to happen in one chapter. So I thought the Sectumsempra was in one chapter with the detention/quidditch match in another.

@@RealGaIaxy did you read the books? Not trying to be rude just curious. I find people that only saw the movies like it far better than those that read the books. To me the scenes with Ginny and Harry are incredibly awkward. They added a few things that either didnt make sense or they completely undermined the emotional weight of the scenes. And they didnt put in all the lessons that Harry had with Dumbledore that really gave an interesting backstory to Voldemort and explained how he thought and stuff. I feel like you get a much richer understanding of the characters because of these backstories. And like that whole thing with McClaggen and Hermione was just weird and awkward. They just put way too much focus on the romance aspect and forgot to focus on the story and how things were getting more scary because of the things that the death eaters were doing. There were dinners where Bill would come home and tell them about a disappearance and it showed the tension in the community. Those kinds of things were really missing in the movie.
I am from the UK and yes we say snogging, we think it's completely normal and hate it when you Americans say "pants" and "fries" and how your American Harry Potter books have "sorcerer" instead of "philosopher", but we still love you guys anyway

Hesita Jones is a member of the order of the phenoix, and she picks up the dursleys in book 7, and shes the one who yells at the dursleys for not saying goodbye to harry. My first guess was that she was a memebr of the Hdhsjbaj Harpies, the female quiddich team Ginny joins, but I looked it up and was way off!
I’m reading through Order of the Phoenix for the first time right now (I only have 100 pages left!!) and I was having the SAME thoughts about Cho!! Knowing from the movies that Harry winds up with Ginny, I’m just like, “What is the cho relationship accomplishing?” Just feels like a red herring. I’d watch that video! (Love your videos you guys are awesome!)
I feel like it was never really because she fancied Harry though. I always thought she was trying to let him down gently. He asked her super close to the ball, so chances were slim anyway. And she can just say, 'aw, sorry, woulda if I coulda, but I'm going with Cedric.' And after Cedric dies Harry is the one who was there. So he's more a therapist/memory for her than a boyfriend.
It's incredibly unrealistic to be with the first person you date, and so if Harry only ever dated Ginny, you'd expect them to break up. But if he dates Cho, then after that fails to work out, it will be more believable for Harry to be with Ginny. Especially as he's basically only ever with two girls in his whole life. Not to mention that he did crush on her in book 4, so it would feel like something was missing if that dating possibility never went anywhere. He also finds out that he doesn't like girls who cry so much, who are too serious, and can't handle their emotions or handle difficult situations. Ginny is very different from that. It also helps Harry to make a mature decision with her at the end of the 6th book when he chooses to leave her behind to find the horcruxes. He wouldn't have done that (or was less likely to) if he didn't see how a loss could dramatically hurt a loved one (like how Cho was traumatized by Cedric's death).

Unpopular opinion: Cho Chang is SUCH an underrated character. People hate on her SO MUCH, calling her a cry baby and what not. If YOU went through the same awful stuff as she did I would like to see you not cry all the time. Cho did everything that should be expected of her after going through what she did. Stop being mean to Cho just because you don't like the idea of Harry and her as a couple!

She deserved so much better than the credit she is given. She is very well allowed to cry and be defensive because her boyfriend died and her best friend "betrayed" the group and lost most of her friends shortly after due to defending that friend. I mean. Snog is an actual term. Mostly used in Britain though. Kiss and caress amorously. "the pair were snogging on the sofa" is what I got. So yeah. Awesome video!
I'm from the UK and snogging/snog/snogged is actually used but not in a serious romantic sense. It's a more sort of jokey and informal term. Like if you're at school and your friend has a new boyfriend, someone might ask where they are and you could be like "ugh they're probably off snogging somewhere". It's definitely more of a kids/teenage term (or it was when I was a teenager at least!!)
Roflmao Unfortunately so true. In my literature class in University they still taught this concept called author's death. Which means as soon as the book is printed and in the readers hands you have to read it based on its own content not any additional information provided by The author later. And that's how I prefer to keep the Harry Potter series because it leaves open a lot more interesting options for fanfiction and thoughts the author had 10 to 20 years after the fact really don't matter to what's in the actual book. Which is why for me the cursed child doesn't exist I only begrudgingly accept the epilogue because it's in the book on original printing.
21/30... I live for the romance stuff, it’s why HBP is my favorite, and Harry and Ginny’s first kiss is my favorite moment in the series. Also don’t appreciate the Cho hate, I think she’s an underrated character.

Harry is not very good at picking up social cues. I think it's because he never had friends growing up and the Dursley's never talked to him much. So Cho's sensitivity and subtle mannerisms completely passed him. Harry also usually expresses his displeasure by bellowing and shouting; most likely picked up from Vernin. So with Cho she would be very intimidated by that.
Also that she refused to be angry at her friend after she betrayed the DA was a big thing. She's just too sweet for her own good. Harry is a good person at heart but he is very capable of hatred.
All in all I think Cho has one or more sisters. She really grew up with females. Ginny by contrast has 6 brothers and so has been surrounded by males her entire life. She really understands males and her thinking is almost more masculine than feminine.

Love these quizzes!! I've got some clarifications for you:
- 9 - Ginny and Harry first kiss after they've won the Quidditch Cup. This doesn't happen on the field, because Harry is in detention with Snape for using Sectumsempra on Draco. So Ginny becomes seeker (and captain?) for the final match and when Harry goes back to the common room he finds out they won and there's the euforic atmosphere you were talking about.
- 13 - Harry accidentally touched Ginny when sneaking through the portrait hole under the Invisibility Cloak and after taking Felix Felicis. Ginny thinks this is Dean pushing her, and says he always does that, Dean tries to defend himself because he did actually not touch her this time. That's all we know about the argument that led to the breakup, because the portrait hole closes after Harry at that point.
- 16 - Hestia Jones is a member of the Order of the Phoenix. She was part of the Advance Guard who took Harry to Grimmauld Place in the beginning of book five and she's one of the people who goes with the Dursleys to protect them in book seven.
- 28 - 'Snape Victorious' is about Snape getting the DADA teaching post, so it's at the beginning of the book. They first kiss in 'Sectumsempra' is at the end of the chapter. It's the chapter in which the fight with Draco occurs, followed by Harry being punished and serving detention during the last Quidditch match of the year. The chapter then ends with Harry going into the common room and kissing Ginny.
I think Ginny didn't become Captain as Harry wasn't kicked from the team. Snape just made sure to have his detention on the same time as the match happens so Gryffindor would be at disadvantage.

I think you're being a bit unfair to Cho. Remember she's 15/16 years old in goblet, and it's possible to have a crush on multiple people at the same time. Plus it's not as if Harry were very clear about how he felt about her, they barely even had a conversation before the yule ball! So don't blame Cho for accepting a date proposal when she didn't even know if she could expect another one.

That said, I still don't think she should have used Harry in an attempt to move on (which is exactly what I think she was doing whether she knows it or not is up for debate).
No I have to interject, I think Cho Chang as a character is important to the story.
Her side-plot is about how falling in love feels (yes, we do get that with Ginny too) but it is about telling teenagers that they are not alone in feeling extremely awkward in this situation. It tells us that not every person we feel drawn to has to be our one true love (and that in a universe that is all about the one true love! Think about Snape, James, Tonks!) It tells us that everybody has stories about relationships that went wrong. Even Harry - the chosen one.
And there is another thing: We tend to idolise people when we fall in love but not yet know them. Harry does that with Cho! But he learns about her and sees that she is just a normal woman with imperfections and troubles.
This is a valuable message.
Still, the whole Cho thing is extremely awkward to watch xD

Got 17 points. Some were tricky because I haven't read them more than once in English, only a million times in Swedish. And have never thought of Cho that way, but I'd spontaneously object (or play devil's advocate) by saying that it would be lame if Harry just got his future wife straight away without experiencing a common heartbreak first. It's actually a bit too Disney that he even ends up with Ginny, considering how everything else is just such a happy ending for him. Also, it gives Cedric's death more of an impact, introduces a Ravenclaw that we can later relate to in D.A and actually adds to Ginny's story arch by showing the reader that even in the darkest times (when Harry dates Cho) and a future with your biggest love (Harry) seems impossible, it can still happen. Don't lose hope, love will always win, etc. (except for Snape).
In the " Snape Victorious " chapter, Snape gets the defense against dark arts job he wanted
While I don´t like Cho, I see her importance as this:
Harry´s romance with her was awkward and painful (for us to watch). But now imagine he goes through this with Ginny...

@@RealGaIaxy did you read the books? Not trying to be rude just curious. I find people that only saw the movies like it far better than those that read the books. To me the scenes with Ginny and Harry are incredibly awkward. They added a few things that either didnt make sense or they completely undermined the emotional weight of the scenes. And they didnt put in all the lessons that Harry had with Dumbledore that really gave an interesting backstory to Voldemort and explained how he thought and stuff. I feel like you get a much richer understanding of the characters because of these backstories. And like that whole thing with McClaggen and Hermione was just weird and awkward. They just put way too much focus on the romance aspect and forgot to focus on the story and how things were getting more scary because of the things that the death eaters were doing. There were dinners where Bill would come home and tell them about a disappearance and it showed the tension in the community. Those kinds of things were really missing in the movie.

I’m reading through Order of the Phoenix for the first time right now (I only have 100 pages left!!) and I was having the SAME thoughts about Cho!! Knowing from the movies that Harry winds up with Ginny, I’m just like, “What is the cho relationship accomplishing?” Just feels like a red herring. I’d watch that video! (Love your videos you guys are awesome!)
I feel like it was never really because she fancied Harry though. I always thought she was trying to let him down gently. He asked her super close to the ball, so chances were slim anyway. And she can just say, 'aw, sorry, woulda if I coulda, but I'm going with Cedric.' And after Cedric dies Harry is the one who was there. So he's more a therapist/memory for her than a boyfriend.
It's incredibly unrealistic to be with the first person you date, and so if Harry only ever dated Ginny, you'd expect them to break up. But if he dates Cho, then after that fails to work out, it will be more believable for Harry to be with Ginny. Especially as he's basically only ever with two girls in his whole life.
Not to mention that he did crush on her in book 4, so it would feel like something was missing if that dating possibility never went anywhere.
He also finds out that he doesn't like girls who cry so much, who are too serious, and can't handle their emotions or handle difficult situations. Ginny is very different from that. It also helps Harry to make a mature decision with her at the end of the 6th book when he chooses to leave her behind to find the horcruxes. He wouldn't have done that (or was less likely to) if he didn't see how a loss could dramatically hurt a loved one (like how Cho was traumatized by Cedric's death).

Unpopular opinion: Cho Chang is SUCH an underrated character. People hate on her SO MUCH, calling her a cry baby and what not. If YOU went through the same awful stuff as she did I would like to see you not cry all the time. Cho did everything that should be expected of her after going through what she did. Stop being mean to Cho just because you don't like the idea of Harry and her as a couple!
I am physically unable to upvote this as much as I want to but I want you to know that it should say at least two million next to the thumbs up. I love Cho Chang. She deserved so much better than the credit she is given. She is very well allowed to cry and be defensive because her boyfriend died and her best friend "betrayed" the group and lost most of her friends shortly after due to defending that friend. I mean. I'm from the UK and snogging/snog/snogged is actually used but not in a serious romantic sense. It's a more sort of jokey and informal term. Like if you're at school and your friend has a new boyfriend, someone might ask where they are and you could be like "ugh they're probably off snogging somewhere". It's definitely more of a kids/teenage term (or it was when I was a teenager at least!!)

Hi there professional British person here, yes we do use the word snog/ snogging it doesn’t involve phlegm but it does use a lot of tongue.

Unfortunately so true. In my literature class in University they still taught this concept called author's death. Which means as soon as the book is printed and in the readers hands you have to read it based on its own content not any additional information provided by The author later.
And that's how I prefer to keep the Harry Potter series because it leaves open a lot more interesting options for fanfiction and thoughts the author had 10 to 20 years after the fact really don't matter to what's in the actual book. Which is why for me the cursed child doesn't exist I only begrudgingly accept the epilogue because it's in the book on original printing.

as someone who doesn't read the books as often as you two, I enjoy the idea of Cho, just like how most of the argument for Ron and Hermione is the principle of the best friend character getting the main girl. I love the idea that this perfect girl that the main character is obsessed with it normal, broken, even disappointing? and that the perfect person has been right in front of you, but you were blinded by infatuation. always a huge fan of Ginny the fangirl marrying her celebrity crush
