    I own this laptop, in the 10SFK variant containing an RTX 2070. The cooling solution could be improved as thermals are pretty bad once you get it. After repasting, undervolting/underclocking, and using a cooling pad, mine gets respectable temps with the CPU below 80°C under a heavy load most of the time and the GPU never reaching 80°C. The Steelseries keyboard is a joy to type on and the RGB colors are very vibrant, except maybe when turning it to white because it has a very subtle greenish tint to it. It also can get smudges and fingerprints very easily but that doesnt bother me. Gaming performance is phenomenal, below desktop but if you're getting a gaming laptop, you can expect a performance tradeoff for mobility. It works wonders for VR and Im very satisfied with it. I hope this helps someone else out.

I would like to point out that in your laptop sample it doesn't include the 1TB HDD that is included in the one you link from Newegg which is the one I bought, so that can be factored into the price to help with the overall value.

    Hey Jarrod, fantastic video as always, I just had a doubt. Theoretically speaking, would a 115W RTX 2060 generate as much heat as a 115W 2070? (Because they have the same wattage) Or will one of them be better, provided the chassis and the cooling system is the same for both ? Same for RTX 2070 and RTX 2070 super (both 115W).
    I know this is very difficult to test, I just wanted a theoretical answer if possible.

      I'm kinda curious about it.

    • @TonsOfFunk
      @TonsOfFunk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would assume because of the higher clock the 2070 is going to be running 15% to 20% more frames which is going to put more work on the graphics card itself and the CPU creating more heat most likely. I don't think that translates to 15% to 20% heat but likely a 5c to 10c more in most tasks.

      If you need a few tips from someone who is a university student: For me and many of my peers it is important a laptop fits in a backpack (so mainly 13" and 14" devices, 15" would really be the max), it needs to have full-sized HDMI (there are no connections here for Mini-HDMI for presentations, only full-sized HDMI and the older VGA standard) and a relatively good I/O selection. Unlike gaming laptops there wouldn't be a requirement for a headphone jack or such, but having at least 2 USB-A's and a USB-C port is very useful for students, and external I/O modules are out of the question (you often don't have room to put them in the lecture hall and are only at risk of loosing them during travel).
      Oh, and the longer the battery lasts, the better.
      I can't say much about middle- and highschool, since back when I was that age we didn't use computers at school (other than in the ICT room), but I imagine that for them a very lightweight laptop with long battery life is preferable. If they need to do digital presentations as wel I can imagine they would also like to have a full-sized HDMI port or a thunderbolt port. And a laptop with a strong chassis, since it will likely see some abuse.

      I currently have that exact model, minus the 1tb hard drive. Can say it's definitely worth it. I only paid 1400 for it on amazon, so the extra 100 for the drive is definitely worth the money. It even has VR options in the bios.

    Nice review as always. After watching a ton of laptop videos it seems that most laptops in 2020 at this price range, be it AMD or Intel, are getting up to 95c unless artificially hamstrung. It seems that Intel's throttles at 95c but AMD's do not. Not saying AMD or Intel is better but should we be basing both processors on the same thermal limit scale or do their different architectures result in different thermal limits?

    • @PrncfPrsa
      @PrncfPrsa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Intel has long been known for running cooler than AMD, and for good reason.
      It might be because AMD has the pin-on-processor design, which retains more heat, but also allows for a bit more thermal buffer. They are also bigger, which helps with thermal dissipation.
      Intel has lower thermal throttling because intel chips, from what my uneducated eyes have seen, are much more susceptible to heat damage than AMD chips.

    Basically this is the same as my configuration of GP75 10SEK but mine is a 17.3" laptop and this one is smaller. I got it after your comprehensive review Jarrod, despite you had the 2070 one (and my old Clevo burnt its GTX for the 3rd time). Very impressed by the MSI so far. The 17.3" display rocks (very bright excellent timings) and its lack of G-sync is a non issue if you play games which allow for high framerates. I was pretty scared to buy a non G-sync display until I got it. PS: my GP75 wasn't reliable at -0.1 undervolt. Had to go the -0.75v route for the moment.

Yes, the fans get loud when gaming but it's really not THAT bad and that's normal with gaming laptops. The battery is okay but I'm usually plugged in when using it so it's not a problem for me. I have the laptop as well, but with the rtx2070. My best guess would be it's because of the turbo boost. If you are running programs that the software THINKS the processor needs a boost, it will turbo up to what it thinks the processor needs to be at. You can disable the turbo boost and adjust the boost settings in the BIOS, which I highly recommend, since it also drops the thermal temperatures.
      There isn't a major drop in performance, and I highly recommend doing so.
