- In this video I demonstrate how to apply gold leaf to watercolor paper jewelry. My detailed, clear and easy to understand instructions will guide you step by step through the entire process.
Visit www.watercolorj... to learn more about my watercolor paintings and jewelry creations.
Incorporating metal leaf into the surface of your watercolor paper and rice paper jewelry creations is an effective way to enrich surfaces and enhance the overall look of your work. Not only is metal leaf an excellent choice for the backing and border of your pendants and earrings, but as the design evolves, metallic decorative elements can be added to the surface of the jewelry object to create engaging designs that compliment the colorful watercolor painted surface.
I wish I had teachers like you... the way you explain the process is so simple and easy to follow. You go into detail without getting boring.. BRAVO!

You’ve inspired me. I do a different kind of art, but I thought I’d apply some of your techniques and see how my pieces turn out.
I really like what you said about not throwing pieces away. I’ve always had the mindset that even failures are teaching me something. It never occurred to me to go back to an old project. Thanks for the advice.
This is beautiful and I love the different shades of color you added. Thank you once again.
thank you for sharing, I've currently tapped into my creative spirit and your tutorialshave been not only informativebut highlyinspirational.
Wow, that really is lovely! Reminds me of a fairy wing that Mucha would have designed.
I mean that as a compliment, by the way.

Again another great video that not only showed a very interesting design method but answered several questions I had about the two types of leaf and the more effective manner to remove the leaf from the flat sheets. Thank you very much! Neena
Absolutely beautiful and very inspiring! Thank you!
Love this idea of watercolor jewelry! New to me. TY
I'm watching all your video, I'm enchanted! thank!

Thank you for this tutorial! I was looking for information if I could apply very thin, graphical designs in gold on sturdy watercolor paper - your video helped me with this decision - expecially the last part. Not sure yet, if it will really work on unprepared paper, but i will figure this out! thank you so much
Love your videos! So detailed, very helpful.

Love it - enjoyed your great site! Thanks!
Thanks so much for the video...keep them coming please!
Hi Ellen - This is tricky, because if you completely cover the piece with gold leaf/varnish, there is a good chance that blistering can occur in the oven. To avoid this, I do not apply varnish to the back of the piece so that vapors can out-gas. Then I place the piece for about 10 minutes in the toaster oven preheated to 150 degrees F. The only reason why I would do this is to harden the varnish. If this is not of great concern, I will omit this step. Thanks for asking! -Ross.
Sorry for the delay in response - Hurricane Sandy took down power here. Thanks very much for watching and commenting. I am happy you found the videos helpful, and glad to have you as a subscriber!
Awesome commentary n explanations thanks
Wonderful!! Great instruction!!
Thanks for your feedback - I appreciate it! -Ross
Great work, very inspiring, thanks for uploading!
Love this piece; its beautiful! The smell of the gold size is dreadful, I find that gesso works wonders in gilding. Its pre mixed for gilding or you can mix it up yourself; there are loads of traditional recipes out there that were used in manuscript illuminations etc.
This particular video demonstrates the metal leaf technique with watercolor paper jewelry, but you can apply metal leaf to rice paper jewelry. I am working on a video to demonstrate this soon. Thanks a lot for watching!
Great video, I was wondering when you have applied the final gold leaf and sealed with varnish if you would ever put it in the toaster oven again to harden the varnish?
Thanks and love all your videos
Wow thank you for sharing. l am working on a few pendants as we speak
I am new to using gold leaf and I found your tutorial really good an inspiring! I am looking forward to have a go at it! I was wondering, could you use normal glue (such as modge podge for example) instead of the Mona Lisa adhesive you are using?
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
That's great - hope you really enjoyed the process! Did you use the gold leaf?
Hi Steven - I agree on the smell - pretty awful!! Thanks a lot for the tip on gesso - I appreciate it very much! Thanks for watching!
Glad you liked the video. This process is very enjoyable - it's fun to watch your design gradually appear. Thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks so much! Can't wait to tey...
I use 140 lb Arches watercolor paper for the front, and optionally I use banana decorative paper for the back. Thanks for watching!
I used Minwax Clear Polycrylic Varnish. The watercolor surface is not affected because I gently flow it on rather than brush it on. Thanks for watching!
Your work is just breathtaking I'm so glad I found your channel :)
Glad you find my videos useful! Thanks very much for watching! -Ross
I use the same metal leaf adhesive - Mona Lisa brand - for either gold or silver leaf. Thanks for watching!
Very nice indeed !
Gold leaf is truly a lot of fun to apply, and the results can be amazing! Enjoy the process! Thank for commenting!

Beautiful! I'm really inspired, can't wait to start creating my own. Thanks so much for sharing, Fav'd and Sub'd.
I would like to use silver leaf instead of gold leaf. Which liquid do you suggest to use in that case?
Thanks Ross for sharing yours amazing jobs. I would appreciate if I can see a video tutorial about the necklace with multiple round small circles.
Fantastic, thank you
You're welcome and thanks for watching! -Ross
Thanks very much for your comments!
This may be answered in one of your other videos but what type of paper do you use to make the jewelry? I am wanting to try this process.
I am not sure that you ever received my reply - I use 140 lb Arches watercolor paper for the front, and optionally I use banana decorative paper for the back. Thanks for watching!
On your necklace pendants you put them into a toaster oven to cure the varnish, do you also do that with these after you apply the gold leaf and another layer of varnish?
No problem. I just did a blog post (visit so-charmed) about gold leafing and embedded your video. You might get some more views from the link up. Hope so! And... thanks again.
Can you apply gold leaf to PMC silver metal clay jewelry and if so do you need to seal it?
Thank you for watching!
I do see the association - that is very interesting! Let me know how the technique works for you and thanks for watching!
Lorna Bowman That's a good suggestion - Thanks! -Ross

Mod podge is not an adhesive and won't work well in this case. Thanks for watching!
