Another new Canadian subscriber happy to stumble upon your site. Note to Cindy: I got my husband interested in jewelery making by taking him to the lapidary club with me where he got hooked on the "rocks" like all the other men in the club.
Only a decorative decision. You can go with painted watercolor paper just as easily. Either choice is varnished, so there is no difference as far as the actual surface goes. Feel free to choose either paper for the bottom of the bracelet segments. Thanks for your question!
The easiest wax to use and buy is a box of thin birthday candles - available at party supply stores or even large supermarkets. Just remember to remove the wick after it melts. Also my blog article about toaster ovens will give you additional important information about using this appliance for heat.
Do you mean using wire as the connecting material? I am sure there are many possibilities that are worth experimenting with and I encourage that! Thank you for watching and for your feedback!
Been looking for something drifferent to teach my middle school art class and WOW, did you ever have the ticket!! Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to get started!
I do not recommend polyurethane for two main reasons: first, the fumes are toxic; and second, I don't like the yellowing that occurs with polyurethane after curing. Polycrylic clear gloss provides the clearest, most durable finish in the least amount of time with a lot less fumes. That is why I recommend it.
I'm thrilled that found you...your projects are magnificent and your teaching technique is fabulous. Lookingg forward to part 2 and watching your other videos...WOW!!!!
I have a question if you don't mind, can you leave the edges rough to give a more organic look to them sort of like thin sheets of mica? Great tutorial, I'll have to order some watercolor paper online. Our local craft store doesn't go that thick. Thanks again
I always encourage my students to experiment with new approaches. Your idea sounds very interesting and definitely worth trying. Let me know how it turns out! Thanks for watching!
Wish my husband would make jewelry. Wouldn't that be cool? Only he would put skulls on it somewhere. :( Just have to make it myself. just the way I want it. :) Very inspiring.
I love how you always say to be inspired by nature and the things that are around you. I always enjoyed with photography capturing very minor details and drawing them. It is always so interesting the shapes that you see, or even the small pictures that come out of the shapes. I feel that people are always so quick to go to things that everyone knows because it can be "easy." I love finding the perfect aha moment to catch.
You're welcome, Kathy! I'm very happy that you find the project challenging and interesting! I hope you enjoy making the bracelet, as it lends itself to many variations and color possibilties! Thanks for watching!
Hi - varnishing with polycrylic varnish exactly the way I describe in the video makes the piece very durable, hard and water-resistant. That being said, I would not wear the piece exposed to pouring rain or take it in the shower, which is common sense. You will be surprised, however, how strong it gets with varnished layers. Thanks for your question!
If you are more comfortable with scissors, they are fine to use. For me, however, I find that it is much harder to achieve the curvilinear shapes with a scissors than with an x-acto knife - that's why I use the latter. Thanks for your question!
Beautiful, thoughtful and easy to watch tutorial about a great ancient art. realisticart presented an entertaining and surprisingly quick video that respects time and walk you through the process step by step. Thank you very much; your presentation was a pleasure to listen to as well.
Great tutorial. Is there a reason not to use just some paper scissors to cut the shapes? It seems laborious to use an exacto knife - I'd be afraid to cut myself! :)
LOVE LOVE LOVE this .... thank you so much for sharing!!!! I am sooooooo glad I just happened upon your site...woo hoo....have subscribed and cant wait to go through all your vids!! Have a great week. ~ Sandy (Canada)
I love your work and appreciate your videos. Your timing is unhurried and meditative and thorough. It is very kind of you to share the secrets of creating these lovely pieces, both the construction but also the thought process as well. Thank you.
I missed where you talk about why you attach the banana paper, is it better to wear against the skin than regular watercolor paper or what is it's purpose?
I originally used Elmer's Glue All (School Glue is washable and -not- recommended), but I now use Lineco Neutral PH Adhesive, which has even better adhesion properties than Elmers for this purpose. I do not recommend Mod Podge, as it is too thick to work with on this project. Thanks for watching!
Just found your videos! I have always been fascinated with paper as a medium for jewelry but I have only worked with wire in the past. I am very excited to try your techniques!!! Thanks for such clarity and thorough instructions as well...can't wait to try this!!!
I have really enjoyed incorporating paper in my jewelry designs as it lets me combine painting with jewelry construction. Hope you enjoy it too! Thanks for your comments! -Ross
I love this bracelet! I can't wait to try it out. Thank you so much for the video. One question - is there a reason you use an exacto to cut out the pieces rather than using scissors? Is it just personal preference?
THANK YOU SO MUCH...i will use shopping bag for base..it has lovely texture and heavy..i will use modge podge and eye pins for connectors..also..the watercolor paper can be made with the shaving cream method..which i use..turns out lovely and swirly..thanks so much for the tutorial..this might be good for festival sales...hhmmm..yep funky 70's style bracelet..light weight and you can also add beads as well..ive got so many ideas in my head now..i gotta go ...thank you
Like the subtle colors that come through on this bracelet. Can I use 90# paper for this project? I inherited my husband's art supplies, and he had 3 pads of that weight paper. Never had a project to use them before.
why you use specifically use watercolor paper srry i just dont uderstand difference between normal paper and watercolor paper also what glue you used for sticking layers??
He normally used Elmers glue all. Also watercolor paper is designed for watercolors. It's generally more thicker and it retains the color better than normal paper.
Hi Harriet, I've decided to redo many of the watercolor paper jewelry videos with a new approach to the wax method. In the meantime if you do a search on Amazon for "BESQUAL 10ga wire wax" this wax can be used for my pendant and bracelet projects. Thanks for watching! Ross
Thank you for such a quick response! I'm afraid the Amazon wire wax is too expensive for me. I guess I'll keep looking for the candles. There is one source for $10 at a dental supplier, though.......or maybe ask my dentist if he can get some pieces for me! www.bilkimya.com/shop/wax-wire-sprue-wax-400-gr/
Absolutely beautiful and so many possibilities. I wanted to do approximately 25 as gifts forthe women in my life before I go and my husband calculated it would take me approximately 1 month or 50 hours to complete them at approx. 3+ hrs per day (my general stamina), not including the sanding for ea.step, and the need to cut out 875 pieces of paper. That was very discouraging although, that was not his intent. So, perhaps I'll only try a few and see how it goes. I've purchased most of the materials I will need except for the candle and the leather cord since they need to be the same size. I cannot find 2mm WHITE CANDLES ANYWHERE. We even looked at the site where you got your candles as shown in the tutorial and could not find any ALL WHITE candles. We think we have exhausted every potential website. So frustrating. They do have some multicolor but I fear they would seep through into the paper above during the various heating processes. Can't afford the jeweler cord but even they do not use much white. Please tell me exactly where you got them. We cannot move forward until we have these. We thought of using wire but I fear it would make the heating process uneven for the varnish or leave a top indentation when shaping it. Thank you for sharing your wonderful piece with the world. You make it a better place to be! Jo Anna
Hi jahhhci, in my Fall 2013 Newsletter, which you can subscribe to on my blog site, I give detailed instructions on how to use jewelry cord to create the channel instead of candles. I moved away from candles since I realized that many folks had a hard time finding them, and now find that I enjoy this simpler method for channel creation. Take a look and try it. To find the blog site, go to my You Tube channel page and click on the link "Signup for Newsletter Here." Thanks for watching - Ross

I use Minwax Polycrylic clear gloss varnish - a water-based product. Thanks for watching!
That wax method would totally work for polymer clay pieces, I'll bet! These are great videos!
