  • Whisky in the 6 #89 features the Macallan Edition 2. This is a no age statement whisky that will blow you away. Macallan proves once again that they are extremely different to match with this expression. Watch this review to find out just how much Rob loves this whisky.

    Love your reviews rob! I was surprised at how much I liked this scotch
    as well. The 48.2 AVB does it wonders. Macallan should take note to
    how much us scotch enthusiasts love our whiskey at higher strengths,
    non-chill filtered, and without color added.

    Really liked this too. Bought on a whim in November and then got three more once I tried it. Have found it interesting to compare everyone's reviews on it. Sup Rob. I finally picked this up last night. Total Wine still has it for $99 here in California. Initial impressions -- It reminded me of the Mac 12, except more syrupy, sweeter, and more spice. Also, much more complex. Then I watered her down to 43% or so, and It started to remind me of the Double Cask at that Strength. So i poured some DC, and Nope, it does not taste the same watered down. Haha. I prefer it neat, that 48.2% is perfection. This is more complex than the 12 and 12 DC, and to me tastes slightly older. I'm definitely going to pick up another 2-3 bottles to stash away, and am super pumped for the Edition 3 to come out. $100 is a fair price for this I feel, and I'm pretty blown away it hasn't sky rocketed in price yet. Yes its a NAS, but it satisfies on every level for me. And the price , I feel, is still a steal. Thanks for the review, cheers!
    ps. I gotta source me out some Edition 1, saw Keith post he found a bottle in Lodi. I May need to take a road trip there lol.

    Hi Rob, great review. I just wonder how much better you remember this Edition no. 2 is compared to the Sienna. I have both but haven't had them side by side. The Sienna is made exclusively with casks from Jerez Spain. Their color is similar, also their price point, at least where I live. Regards.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's better. Both are made with similar casks. The ED2 is unchill filtered. It's a higher abv. These two factors make it better despite the Sienna being a touch older.

    tried this today, i agree its very nice! (the nose blew me away) better than Rare Cask and the rest of the 1824 series, but I still think Mac 18 Sherry has a little more depth, complexity, and a better finish. But finally a good quality NAS Macallan we can buy in Ontario, lol

    I have had all three editions open for some time and I started off liking 1 most. As time in the bottle goes, I am preferring edition 2 more than 1 or 3. Very strange. I don't know that I would rate these as high as Glendronach 18. But certainly above Glengoyne 18 and close to glengoyne 21. Even edition 3 would be up there. Correction of one of Keith Petersens statements. Most Macallans are not 40%abv. They are 43%abv. In Europe they are 40%, but since Keith mentioned KL and Binny's I assume he is in the US, so 43 applies here.

    A+ really and better than a high end Glengoyne. Heard good things as the other comments have stated as well, but your enthusiasm almost makes me think your Macallan Rep. Have had a few Macallan's and I agree with you they all have a distinctive qualities to them. Well looks like I will have to try this. Hard considering in BC that Bunnahabain 18 is a couple dollars cheaper and I know that one is great.

      @WhiskyInThe6  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't reviewed the Bunnahabhain 18 yet, but I hear incredible things. I'm not a Macallan rep, I'm a Whisky in the 6 rep only. It's really great stuff in my honest opinion.

      @welshtoro3256 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Bunnahabhain 18 is much better than this in my opinion. Still, I don't just want to drink Bunnahabhain 18. Actually, I prefer the Bunnahabhain 12 to the Mac ED2. I'm not being cheeky. I had a bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 over Christmas. I'd forgotten what a good dram it is for the money (£28 in Waitrose Xmas sale).

      Welsh, the Bunnahabhain 18 is the only expression I've tried from their distillery and its fantastic. I can't imagine what the 12 yr & 25 yr taste like. Great bang for the buck.

  • @peterwhite507
    @peterwhite507 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I paid the same for Balvenie 15 Single Barrel Sherry Cask last year ($280 now) and I just paid $250 for the magnificent Red Breast 21 so I may give it a try, hopefully it's in the same ballpark as those.
    I heard Horst Luening once say that chill filtering does not affect the flavor. I mean we seem obsessed with it yet SM's like Lagavullin 16 are chill filtered and drenched in E150 but it does not stop it from being one of the best single malts on the market.
    Cheers

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think chill filtration simply thins the whisky. It takes away the mouth feel that we often desire in a whisky. You're right though, taste and smell is everything.

    Had this at a bar in San Francisco and there was about 20% left in the bottle. Most likely something opened long ago and had lots of time to breathe and oxidize. Blown away. Came home and eventually purchased one for about $800 and it's not nearly as good as what I remember from the first try. I'm hoping time in the bottle will do its magic and balance this a bit more

    W6, I finished my Mac ED 2 last night. I drink about 3 times a week, 2-4 drams at each sitting. So I'm not a heavy drinker, but I do enjoy my scotch. A bottle will last me about 3 weeks. I've been hitting the Mac ED 2 lately and noticed that although it tasted good, it felt younger and a little hotter than when I first opened the bottle. I would say it is 10-12 years of age. You gave it an A+ and mentioned you might buy a case. After all of the great scotch you've been drinking lately, do you still stick with your A+ and would you still consider buying a case? For me $100 is to much for the bottle. Its good, but I've had better for less. Cheers.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Won't be running out to buy a case. It's one of those that actually decreases in quality as you get lower. If I had to go back I'd like leave the Mac Ed2 at an A+ but bump up the Glendronach 18 to an A+ as well.

    Wow, your saying this Mac ED 2 is better than your 2016 best 6, all the Glengoyne's and all your Mac's you've tried. Without having tasted the Mac 2, that's hard to believe. Harder to believe because its a NAS, so that makes me a Snapper. :>) Out of my 55 bottles, I yet to have a Mac product. They are just over priced and their new expressions are NAS. I hate to over pay for a bottle that does not deliver. With that said, its good to know that it is 48.2% abv, as Mac is usually 40%. Its great to have a higher abv that doesn't bring the burn, but more punch in flavor. If you have found your 'A+".. I would stock up. I have not found my "A+", but several "A", being Glendronach expressions and the HP 21 so far. I still have nice unopened bottles awaiting. Well you certainly have found your gem and hopefully more. I can get this at K&L or Total Wine for $100......Hmmmm, still its an NAS......Good review.

    W6, I originally posted this on the Glenmorangie Nectar D'or, so I am also posting it here where it belongs. To clarify, when I was comparing the Mac Ed 2 to the Glengoyne 18, I was referring to the tasting notes on the box/bottles, some similarities. The Mac had a good nose, but I did detect alcohol as a component. It wasn't distracting, but it was present. The taste was spicy, fruity, complex, with vanilla notes. The alcohol was more present on the taste, but again was not distracting. It had a nice medium finish. I tried it neat first, then on my 2nd dram added a couple drops. It did smooth it out and was not distracting at all. I did prefer it neat, as the flavor profiles were more pronounced for me. I would agree with you and say this juice is between 15-18 yr. I would rate this a "B+" on your scale and 88/100 on my scale. For $100, I certainly have better bottles in my stock. That said, its certainly a good bottle I will enjoy, especially being an NAS. I would feel more comfortable if it was $80. I know have a Mac bottle in my collection.

I would be extremely shocked if this NAS Mac which is basically $100 plus less is better then an 18 year Mac. Im always suspect how how young the age is of the juice in the bottle of NAS. I would bet that the MAC Edition 2 is a lot younger than 18 without even tasting it. Maybe I'll eat my words once I find someone to send me a sample of it to try

      I love the potential a NAS brings. I still feel companies should be forced to tell us the age of the whiskies inside the bottle. Though I feel the same about age statement whisky as well. NAS gives the art of blending back to the distillery. They are able to find casks that complement each other much easier, as opposed to being forced to use the limited 25 year old casks at their disposal. I wonder how often a distillery is forced to use a sub-par cask in a batch of older whisky to ensure it doesn't go to waste.

    Iv'e said a few a less than exciting things about this dram but I've just finished a bottle. Observations - I like drinking good dollops of it every time I had a slurp. On finishing the bottle I'm sorry to see it go and I think I'll get another. Some of my negativity comes from the shitty Macallan brand but I have to admit I enjoyed this whisky. Not the average sherry bomb.

      I'm happy to say we agree. I feel this one just need a chance to prove itself. Cheers WT.

      I have to say I enjoy it every bit as much as the Macallan 18 at a fraction of the price.

    Well this clocked in at #5 for 2016 Whiskey of the year on Whiskey Wednesday, lost out to Lap 10 CS, Laga 8, a Compass Box we will never see in Ontario and of all things Woodford Reserve Rye at #1. WR Rye was considered meh by the Bourbon Bloggers I read and follow.

      Interesting. Haven't tried the Laga 8, Compass Box or Woodford rye, but my guess is that it's in good company.

      Well the Compass Box Enlightenment is a mid priced blend of 4 single malts and WR Rye is at the LCBO for $56 so you could judge for yourself but I doubt either one of these would give you a change of heart.

      peter white pretty sure my next LCBO purchase is the HP 21 after recently hearing that it is not going to be made anymore. That and hopefully i win the BTAC lottery.

      @peterwhite507 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if you buy it at the LCBO you will really overpay for it. Christ it's $285 in New Brunswick and there is a ton of it and NB rarely raises their prices. I think you should be looking to win Max Millions lottery instead of the BTAC if you are going to continue buying from the LCBO.
      They may combine the BTAC with the PVW lottery this year which really sucks.

      I'm going to get all my friends and fam to enter the lottery for me. You're right about the price. It's crazy. But it may be worth a lot more when completely gone.

    I do like your videos but you gotta stop saying "abbreviation" when you mean abv. It sounds quite amateurish and somewhat ridiculous. Alcohol by volume is a key component of what makes whiskies specific and the way the master blenders control their product. Please recognize that abv. is an abbreviation of alcohol by volume and does not mean abbreviation. Otherwise great review and I completely agree with your assessment on the Macallan editions (although I liked ed #1 better than ed #2) relative to its other products released lately. Cheers!

      Lol I'll keep it in mind. The camera does funny things. Abv. Is an abbreviation for alcohol by volume, which makes it even funnier that I say that. Not intentionally of course, believe it or not I'm a writer and a English teacher. Like I said the camera does some weird things to a mans confidence. Cheers, thanks for watching.

      Moshe, I think we all get what W6 means when he says "abbreviation" and its not like he is saying it all the time. Let the guy have some fun.

      5yuser I guess it depends where you’re from as well. Some schools in Ontario consider 90% and above an A+. I’m a teacher in Ontario so it was fitting for me to follow the same.
