- This is a follow up to the video I posted yesterday taking you on a tour through the Columbus AG store during the GOTY 2023 release event.
In this video, I'll show you exactly what we bought and let you know my honest opinions about every item we got. Enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching!

That's awesome! You'll have to try her pink pants outfit with Corinne's fuzzy jacket if you have that - I bet it would look cute. And like I keep saying, I'm glad plenty of ppl like the things I don't because I want the doll to do well :-)
Plastic 😩 I had so many nice accessories from old school American Girl that I regretfully gave away several years ago (because I didn't think I'd collect anymore, lol, jokes on me I guess!) Like Felicity's tea table and chairs (read wood! Cushions! It was so niiiiiice!) and Samantha's brass bed, and the original yellow bunk bed... Miss all those nice pieces, and it makes me sad to see everything just kinda.. cheap now.
But even today, there are some pieces that are much nicer than others. Tenney's stage is the same material and collapsible design as the retired Grand Hotel and the current Hotel & Spa. That material isn't solid wood like Pleasant Company would have used, but it's sturdy and has some weight to it. Kavi's poor stage is just sad. My Life As would make this same quality at a fraction of the price.

I usually buy the GOTY with her pajamas except for Joss because I didn’t have enough money at the time, however this year I do not like Kavi’s pajamas so I’ll probably buy Kavi with her Bollywood outfit.
The Bollywood outfit over her pjs any day of the week in my opinion!

I agree with the color of the pajamas being so pretty on her! But it truly looks horrendous lol
When ppl tell me they love the pieces in her collection that I dislike, I think that's great. I want her to sell well, after all. But we each have different tastes and those pajamas just don't do it for me lol.

You single-handedly sold me on Kavi over 117; she'll be replacing her on my short wishlist for 2023.
Your disclaimer about your wife's tastes being different than yours made me giggle. I share your ambivalence for her meet outfit, and I'd say my ambivalence continues for the accessories - they just seem overpriced. Since they're cheaper if bought with the doll, I imagine that I'll get them when I get her, but my view on the pieces more or less align with yours (bag is cute tho the strap is garish, I hate the logo on the hat and though *I* hate bucket hats, especially fluffy bucket hats, I get that some people/characters are fluffy bucket hats kind of people lol).
The pjs - now, I haven't read her books yet but..a lot of my SPED students (I work with 5th-8th graders) who have ADHD and are on the sensory-SEEKING end of things, tend to big big on bold colour, flashy metallic things, big fluffy things, sequins, etc... and oh man, do her pyjamas look like something those kiddos would love. (Same with that big multi-coloured fluffy coat.) I'll likely get the IF they go on sale.
I love the look of her Bollywood outfit, but I'm tensing for how much it looks like it's going to stain (like the Diwali outfit did). I'm torn on if I'll get that or not, and am inclined to instead get an outfit from an Indian seamstress that makes very similar authentic pieces (I forget how to spell her username atm, but if you don't know who I'll mean, I can return with that bit of into). The tikka (the part that hangs down from her headscarf) should be metal - like earrings or any other kind of jewellery. Same with the bracelets and anklets. I'm excited to see what independent sellers and collectors do instead.

Grace posted a comment (tongue in cheek) saying that my wife had horrible taste but somehow it disappeared. So odd. She is just much more of a "completist" than I will ever care to be lol.
As for the PJs and their shine being a draw based on her inferred ADHD, I don't know. The book shows her pj top in an illustration, but makes no mention of them (or of any draw to certain textures or shininess). TBH the journal lacked substance, even for a GOTY book. I read it in 20 minutes and I'm not a fast reader. She has an actual book coming out in March so hopefully that one will be more substantial.
Last night I suggested Grace and I each create a new wardrobe for Kavi since neither of us are in love with her style. I went into the doll room first and created 4 outfits. I didn't show Grace and then she went in and made hers. Think that'd make a good video?

yeah, I dunno if I can give AG enough credit to have deliberately done the 'sensory-seeking' thing, but when I saw them and the coat, that was MY first thought. Sad to hear that about the book. I don't mind the graphic novel sort of style that I've seen, and seen other people complain about - that sort of thing is really popular with the students - but dang, if it's not very meaty? meh.
@@fthurman if it had just been longer to make sure the doodles and pictures were *in addition to* the amount of content in their typical GOTY books rather than *instead of*, I'd have been happier.
And maybe I'll go ahead and do a video showing or versions of her wardrobe soon :-)
😂😂😂😂 Your reactions to the items you don’t like are cracking me up!! I actually like the pajamas and my 12-year-old niece would wear something like that, but the slippers!! 😳
Yeah, I do think they're age-appropriate. I just don't like the multicolored, metallic, busy print on the pants. But my wife likes to have the GOTY's PJs. To be fair, a whole lot of Kavi's collection that I don't like will probably sell very well. I'm definitely not their target audience lol.

Yeah, I’m sort of a completionist so like your wife I always get the accessories and pjs. I pretty much always get the pet too so I walked away with Kavi and her accessories, pjs and dog Scamper. I unfortunately had trouble finding a doll where there wasn’t some problem with the eyes; be it with the eyelashes, eyebrows or even mismatched eye size & placement. A bunch of ones I saw also had misprinted lips. I don’t mind a thin upper lip but my ocd can’t handle one side of the mouth being smaller than the other. My daughter was home from college on winter break so I had her come into the store and help me pick one out. Your Kavi is pretty - you picked a nice one.
Grace and I have already talked about how we'll change our buying habits if our local store closes. It's such a privilege to be able to handpick your doll that I think we'd probably do one doll purchase per year (two max) and make the drive to Chicago to be able to still do it in person. And if we did order online, we'd be more inclined to do it through Amazon because their return policy is so much more customer-friendly. We did order three dolls from Amazon during their Black Friday or Cyber Monday sale and all three looked GREAT so sometimes it's not such a gamble. But choosing them in person is my favorite.
@@agtakesover if the store at Easton closes I will be devastated. Not only do I prefer (like most collectors) to pick out the actual dolls in person, I also get a discount in store that can’t be used online. I don’t like getting the dolls online anymore since I’m so particular and the dolls have so many small issues now. I’m fortunate that no matter where we’ve moved (except when we lived just south of Cincinnati) I’ve always lived within an hour of a store - Massachusetts, Dallas, and now Columbus. Our bank account would be happier since there was definitely an uptick in spending when we moved here and the store is really close.
I’m happy to hear that all the dolls you and Grace got from Amazon were great. It is really easy to return things to Amazon so like you I would maybe order the dolls from there if I wasn’t able to make it to Chicago.

Kristie, I love your honesty. You make me smile watching these haul/review videos. You have definitely helped me with my wishlist getting an honest review and thoughts about the products.
Oh, I'm so glad. I do try and think about what others might want to know because I know I sometimes rely on reviews to decide whether or not I want to buy something. I think about fit, texture, versatility, durability, etc. and try to give whatever details might help ppl make a decision.

I don’t like that they separated the yoga outfit from the accessories. One if the reasons that I like the Yog-aa outfit is that it comes with the yoga mat, I didn’t have to pay $30 for it and a couple other things that I don’t care about.
I’m going to our store on Tuesday and if I like it enough, I’ll probably get the Bollywood outfit but that’s it for this doll.
It seems like they're all over the place with how they approach the yoga outfits. The pink one came with the mat...the Namaste Spa one didn't come with a mat and didn't have an option to buy one... and this one didn't include the mat but did have an option to buy it separately. Making up your mind is hard, apparently 🤪

Great items 👍! I'm not thrilled with this doll because she doesn't look original to me & I definitely do not like her meet outfit either 👎 My fave was the Bollywood outfit 😍 I actually liked the PJ's 😆
It would have made more sense (to me) ti rehearse her and then *after* her reign is over release TM117. With them being so similar, and coming out so close together, it makes her a little less impressive. But between the two of them, I definitely prefer Kavi.
My favorite items of Kavis are the yoga outfit and accessories as well as her pajamas and the outfit with the fuzzy coat.
I don't love the shoes from the outfit with the fuzzy coat, but I know they're making a comeback. And I was thinking today that Corrine's periwinkle fuzzy coat would also work well with that outfit.

You're welcome. I've always felt ambivalent about the Marie-Grace mold and it's still not my favorite, but I do think she's the prettiest of the three MG molds we have. And yes - I feel like yoga outfits are something AG has been doing consistently well over the last few years.
What do you think of the dollhouse behind you?
I got that doll house from someone in my neighborhood for $45, so it is hard to be mad about it. It is not my favorite because the ceilings are so low and the rooms feel small to me, but it's not the main one we use. Is it one you are considering? I haven't done a tour of that one yet, but I could do a video comparing our three doll houses (yep, we have 3 lol)
@@agtakesover Yes I was considering it. I had the popular home made version but it was so heavy I coudn't move it around or easily store. I sold it. I would love a review of your houses, and also if you have one that although large may not be awkwardly heavy.
@@ahomefordolls166 That dollhouse is NOTORIOUS for being really hard to put together. I bought it already assembled but took it apart so I could customize the walls (paint, wall paper, whatever) and it was in fact a HUGE pain to put back together. Admittedly I was at a bigger disadvantage since I had no instructions lol. I think a tour and comparison of all three of my dollhouses would definitely be helpful for you. My daughter's dollhouse is handmade but more mobile so it might be that happy medium you need. Not sure when I'll be able to post that video, but I'll definitely make it for you :-)

Thanks! I don't know if you've seen anyone's unboxing or reviews of the larger sets, but I pointed out some of the details of those in the video I uploaded yesterday. Since we didn't get them, I made sure to scrutinize, touch, lift, etc. all that I could yesterday when we were at the release event.
@@agtakesover yes I did see yesterday's in store video. I don't collect big items, I really only like the dolls and clothing sets, I find on our auction site. I did get the carebear nightie set for Xmas, but most are 2nd hand. I did see Julie's Egg Chair for sale awhile ago, wish I had bought it now. Julie is one of my favouries as I grew up in the 70s, born in the 60s 😁
Good point about the greens not matching on the yoga outfit. AG does seem to have a habit of putting things together that don't really go together. Thanks for reviewing everything. You did a very thorough job, as usual. :)

I love her Bollywood outfit still honestly not sold on her other things she is a lovely doll but after I heard the 90s twins were coming I am holding my money for them on that note will you go to the store for those dolls and video their collection?
I'm interested to know what you think if you watch the video where my wife and I created our own wardrobes for Kavi (posted a couple days ago). And yes, we'll definitely go to the store for the twins' release and I'll film and post that 🙂

That inconsistency is what makes me nervous about them getting more and more restrictive with their return policy. Especially for those of us who are picky about our dolls and prefer to hand-pick them...I think if our Columbus store shuts down (their 10 year lease is up in 2023 so we'll see if they renew it or not) we'll change the way we shop and probably buy dolls once a year in Nashville or Chicago.
@@agtakesover since my store closed I’ve had to buy them all online so far I’ve been lucky. I am nervous about all the discrepancies with the painted on eyelashes now. There are several of the newer dolls I want (including Kavi), but am nervous to buy those ones online.
@@kristinaland Have you ever used a personal shopper through AG? I've heard good things about that experience.
@@agtakesover Do they allow one in a completely different state? Perhaps when I’m able to travel to an AG store, I can see about one 😄
@@kristinaland you can use one regardless of which state you're in. And they can pick items for you and send them to your home. I've never used one but have heard good things. I know some ppl have favorites and can ask for recs if you're interested.
