  • Following the tragic fire at Notre Dame, 15th April, we thought we'd share this documentary of the cathedral in its prime.
    Reaching to the heavens, Notre-Dame has stood as a beacon in the heart of Paris since its construction in 1163.

    I enjoyed the fact that Notre Dame changed and evolved over the years, with various alterations being made by different generations; she is not stagnant, but alive. Even now, she is not dead, but is simply just about to move on to her next form.

    This breaks my heart, so glad the French government has ordered a complete and total restoration to what it was pre fire. So she again will be one the most beautiful buildings in the world. Absolutely beautiful. Even burned she is beautiful.

    Seeing those massive wood beams its easy to see why the fire burned so intensely. Hearing her mention the luck of not having a major fire at 41:28 sent chills down my spine :(

    • @ronbennett6396

      Holly
      It's just the opposite. Those massive wooden beams take longer to catch fire than those construction techniques used in more modern buildings.
      Especially if the edges are chamfered, as modern building codes require when using large timbers like that.

      @lilchopcone666 It's not exclusive ffs. There is much more money in the world than which is just needed for the care of the continuity of human culture and knowledge. But hey let's make it all whataboutery - * insert favourite agenda * here 🙄 There's nothing stopping you selling up and donating to your favourite cause. Get a grip ffs.

      @lilchopcone666 Notre Dame is essentially at the heart of France. At just short of 1000 years - it represents the beginnings of European civilisation and the re-emergence of knowledge over ignorance. On the site there existed a Roman temple, an early church and finally a cathedral which broke the bounds of knowledge in engineering and architecture at that time , followed by a secular temple of reason and a navel for the rebirth of a nation following nearly a century of conflict. It's not really surprising that it's held close by those who know their history. Without knowledge of our history we are doomed to repeat our past. We can throw money at many things - only a few withstand as part of our human legacy. Yet we still have the resources and wealth to spend on the ocean and environment. It remains neither are exclusive of each other.

    Notre Dame is by far the most beautiful church I have ever been to in my life. Although I am beyond blessed to live just 2 minutes around the block from the famous Christ Cathedral, there is something special to be said about Notre Dame. A beautiful masterpiece, and wonderful house of God who will one day rise from a beautiful restoration, and open her doors to welcome those inside of her once again.
    I can't wait for the day she's restored to her former glory, and am excited to see her first mass after restoration is complete.
    My God bless her, and continue to keep her as a beautiful part of our history. :)

    41:25 - "This wooden framework dates from the 13th century, and is one of the oldest examples of wood-beam frames in existence, particularly since Notre Dame has had the good fortune not to experience a major fire." Until 4/25/19... So sad. I was surprised to learn that most of the stained glass was already a re-fabrication following destruction during the Revolution. I do hope that the cathederal, which appeared to be mainly intact despite the ravages of the fire, will come back better than ever.

      Actually, a lot of the wood in the roof is only century old, because, during World War I, artillery shells hit the roof, and caused a huge fire(!), necessitating new wood. Of course, having been there for a century, it naturally became as fire prone as any wood that's older.

    I still remember the first time I saw and heard something about this cathedral. This occurred when I first saw the film The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) on TV around 1970. A few decades later I learned that the film was not filmed in Paris. But anyway, the cathedral didn't come into my life as a religious monument, but as a character in the film based on the character in Victor Hugo's book. I don't know if I would like to see Notre Dame in person. Some things have more beauty, meaning and importance when we don't get close to them.

    The fire was tragic indeed, and now much of the world is shut down with COVID 19 and its variations. One suggestion, if ever we can safely travel again, is a visit to Montreal and the other Notre Dame, the Basilica. It is truly stunning and is so often unexpected. Yes the world has another remarkable Notre Dame, one that is a spectacular celebration of colour. The most beautiful city in North America has much to offer the traveler.

    Let us not forget, this is not a merely a gathering place, a tourist location, or a Christian prayer space, it is a Catholic Church. While she has opened her doors to all people, Notre Dame is a Catholic cathedral, and a holy and religious place.

      You just NOW are learning about the French Revolution??? 😱 Didn't you learn in school? Or were you absent during that unit? (or perhaps homeschooled.)

    • @SocialBurrito3
      @SocialBurrito3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@markmh835 Excuse me, I was "Homeschooled" and my mother devoted over two weeks to the history of the French Revolution, because it was deeply intertwined with our American War for Independence. I gobbled it up. I continued to study French history on my own for many years. It was that very homeschooling you mock that sparked a lifelong love of world history. Do not put down what you do not understand.

    • @markmh835
      @markmh835 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SocialBurrito3 -- Having worked for a school system for over 16 years, I can truly say that I do understand homeschooling -- and the motivations behind most parents who homeschool. Your apparent deep and rich education from home is definitely not the norm. The vast, vast percentage/majority of homeschooled students who then attempt to enter a school setting (public or private) are not adequately prepared for their grade level (not to mention the lack of social skills on the part of a majority of them.) This, of course, does not apply to you and many others who are homeschooled, merely to the vast majority of them. The made-for-TV stories of "Homeschooled to Harvard" are an extremely tiny number of such students. The reality (borne out by data) is remedial classes for the majority of these students if/when they attempt to enter a school setting with their peers.
      And, btw, the French Revolution was not "deeply intertwined" with the American War for Independence. The American Revolution was over a full 6 years before the French Revolution. While the American War for Independence might have inspired some of the French revolutionaries, there really was NO OTHER connection than that. Just inspiration. President George Washington and the other Founding Fathers (except Jefferson) were horrified by the French revolutionaries. The Americans fought for their independence; the French fought to overthrow their monarchy and aristocracy and established Catholic Church. And they most certainly did not establish an American-style democratic government in the aftermath: just tyranny and chaos until the rise of Napolean.
      So, as you see, there really isn't any connection between the American War for Independence and the French Revolution, other than "inspiration." Your mom should have taught you that.
