Been a mechanic most of my life, but have never rebuilt an auto. I have a 44RE and for a while has shown it’s age. Recently I had one of the solenoids replaced. The one that controls shifts from 1st to 2nd, if my terminology is correct. The other day things went bad. It’s would rev up a little to much in first and not shift. Got it to shift by switching shifter positions. Then I experienced slipping. Now it has a real bad whining/squealing while parked in R N D 2 1. Increasing the revs in the respected gear, it kind of goes away, and makes what sounds like a hydraulic bypassing type sound. Like a power steering pump bypassing. I remembered days before experiencing a pulsing in acceleration whiling backing into driveway. Thanks for your video. I may attempt to rebuild it for the experience.

The whining sound has me leaning towards fluid level. Could also be an issue with the filter.
Fluid Level:
Many transmissions of this era, can be checked with the transmission in Park. This transmission, however, must be checked in Neutral (there are exceptions). With the trans shifted into Park, the TC (torque converter) is not fed oil. However, with the trans shifted into Neutral, the VB (valve-body) now sends oil to the TC. As the converter fills with oil, the oil level in the oil pan will drop. This is normal operation.
So....if the fluid level is checked, with the trans in Park, it'll give a false reading. It'll look higher than it actually is.
Note: The aftermarket sells a PR (Pressure Regulator) Valve that provides full-time lube...which sends oil to the TC, even with the trans shifted into Park.
***More details***
There's a solenoid block, that contains two solenoids mounted to one mounting plate (piece of metal, with a gasket). One solenoid is for the 3-4 up-shift/down-shift. The other solenoid is for TCC (torque converter clutch).
In some ways, this trans operates like an old school 3-speed.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear, are controlled by shift valves that are influenced by governor pressure and throttle pressure. The older Chrysler 3-speed transmissions utilized a governor (bolted to the output shaft). However, these later model 4 speeds did away with the governor (not always true...more details posted below). The governor was replaced by a governor solenoid. This is the metal solenoid that lives by itself, on the VB. The solenoid "creates" oil pressure, and sends it to the shift valves....just like an old-school output shaft mounted governor, used to do.
4-speed Chrysler transmissions, of this era, use the governor solenoid. However, some models still use the old-school governor. The naming of the trans tells which way the trans is set up.
For example:
47RE vs 47RH.
"E" stand for electronic (solenoid).
"H" stands for hydraulic (old school governor).

Definitely like to have my transmission on my Jeep rebuild by you guys. How do I go about that. Also what upgrades are there on this transmission.
I have a 2003 Jeep Cherokee with the 42RE. Having problems with the shift from 1st to 2nd and then a jolt to 3rd then neutral. But, it doesn't happen all the time. One morning I can drive away and the transmission shifts perfectly and it works fine for a week. Then the next morning it would act up again. But, when it worked it would shift perfectly. I've changed all the solenoids and accumulator spring which initially was broken. Had some improvement, but the same shifting problem still exists. I have noticed a faint whine after I put it into drive and start to coast, this only happens when it is acting up. I would tear into it if I had clue. Great video, you are teaching me allot !

I'd love to see a rebuild video by you guys. Seems like a lot more head-sense coming from SouthPaw. I dont have a trans need right now, but I have owned 7 Jeeps, all using the 42RE - except now I have 3 4wd and one 2 wheel drive. (I know, I cant help it - love those 4.0L. and I just know this jeep so well)
The 2 wheel slips a little in a couple of scenarios. Sometimes when I back out of the driveway, and shift to drive it may hesitate and then catch. The other scenarion always happens at the same stop light in town. I am turning left and then it slips a little a little after take off and into the turn. There are other random times, but because of the occurrence at the same locations, leads me to believe its an adjustment, or solenoid or something. I have driven this unit 400-500 mile trips and had no issues, so I dont think its a rebuild, but could be wrong.
One other question. On the 4wd 4re, is there a way to beef it up a bit? I note he was saying the clutches are fewer in the 42re vs the 44re. Is there a way to add more clutches to get a little more beefyness?

Definitely a good video! I have a 42re that I rebuilt, and i was wondering about a problem I am having the reverse lights now stay on in all gears. Very disappointing! Is there any thoughts to a remedy? Thanks wish this video was up a yr ago ha ha but great job!!
Remember he said that there were 3 different neutral safety switiches sending info to the computer and to the reverse lights. I would look at that. Maybe yours is shorted or the wrong one.
Amazing 😊 i have question about drum overdrive direct because in my 42re the wave ring is crank and damage this drum. I onlynhave drum for bigger clutch pack from different gearbox. Can i use different drum and add few friction and steel ?

What always amazes me on this overdrive is that small thin wire is all that that is holding that humongous spring. You did not mention quite an important safety tip that the hub may not lift evenly and get caught up.
Also is it just me, or there is an aftermarket billet input shaft/drum?
Yes, they can get crooked during removal. Once again, be careful.
The aftermarket does make billet input shafts/drums for the 47RE/47RH/48RE.
I have this unit in my Jeep, I'm curious if there is a way to modify they valve body to where manually selecting 2nd gear would force hold that gear..? I have deep axle gears and it would be nice to be able to force a 2nd gear shift
Are you talking about shifting to 2nd, and preventing an up-shift to 3rd gear? Or a down-shift to 1st gear? Or both?
@@SouthpawAutoworks Yes holding the gear. Sort of like a reverse manual valve body in a rock crawler. I think that might be the only way to do it.
My wavy snap ring broke or the second one. I can replace those without worrying about the large spring ?
What is the difference between the 42RE and the 44RE? I have a 44RE in my Jeep and I was wondering if I can reuse the same parts you listes on the resouces.

The difference will come down to clutch capacity for certain drums. In other words, the number of friction clutches that will be used for a particular clutch drum.
42 may come with less clutches, and 44 may come with additional ones.
Be sure and order the correct kit for your vehicle.

How can i send my 42re from my jeep to get rebuilt by you guys? ive been wanting it to be rebuilt but the trans guys here dont know know them like you guys
Just wondering in the process of reinstalling the valve body but keep having issues with the parking rod on my 44re where does it go exactly keeps getting jammed or stuck in the overdrive assembly
The rod get's pushed into the Park Pawl, located in the rear of the extension housing (Overdrive Housing). The Park Pawl (housing) and Park Gear (rotating assembly) may be in a position where the Park Pawl can not physically move out of the way of the Park Rod, during assembly.
If I was dealing with this issue, I'd rotate the output shaft slowly while installing the rod. This will allow the Park Pawl to move.

Great video love it but I have a request. Would you tell me why I have a no down shift from 2nd to 1st intermittently sometimes it wants to take off in 2nd, most of the time it's fine. I have a 1995dodge dakota 3.9L v6. Any information would be appreciated my name is Leonard. This transmission hasn't been rebuilt has 94000 original miles on it.

Hello! I have Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 2001 5.2 and have some problems with the transmission how i can know what transmission have my truck.
That vehicle should be equipped with the 46RH (also known as the A518).
The 46RH looks just like the 42/44RE...nearly identical, in a lot of ways. The 46RH uses bigger internal components, designed to handle more power.
The units are very similar in many ways. However, the transmission controls are quite different.
The "H" in the RH stands for hydraulic.
The "E" in RE stands for electronic.
I have a problem with the same transmission. when I put in reverse engine stop running. Can you please help me?
It sounds like the converter clutch is coming on, when it's not supposed to.
It could be number of things causing it.
A problem with the:
1). Converter.
2). Pump.
3). VB (valve-body).
4). Electrical.
5). Etc.

On every 518 I've done over the years, the plate that's on the overdrive sungear goes bad, in watching a few videos it seems no one checks it, you took it apart, now see if the round plate spins on the gear, if it doesn't it needs the plate ..

We're currently working our way through a full build series on a different transmission. It's the TH400 (GM Turbo 400). While there are many difference between the TH400 and the 44RE, there are also a lot of similarities, too.

Isn’t this the transmission that carries a death sentence if you mess with the spring with the improper tools and knowledge. I remember taking a dodge transmission apart and there was a spring inside of it that carried about 800 pounds of pressure I didn’t know what I was doing and that thing nearly took my hand off and could’ve struck my face and killed me

@@SouthpawAutoworks Yeah I just hope the DIYers understand the importance of how the spring comes apart even though the O-ring or snap ring has been removed you still need to exercise extreme caution just in case it tries to hang up as the pressure is being released in the Press Leaving a loaded missile on the bench. that’s what happened to me. I thought it was free and ready to come apart but it was hung up somehow I guess in one of the groves or something Lucky for me I had actually dropped it and Kapow. yeah literally spring and all passed right through the sheet metal roof decking and insulation leaving a hole the size of a softball in the roof. Do it yourselfers Please be careful out there messing with these Dodge transmissions.

@@SouthpawAutoworks by the way I love the video one of the best I’ve ever seen as far as this assembly I think a lot of people want to see it overhauled there are some important key factors with this unit especially when it comes to setting up the clearances as Andy pointed out every time you post you inspire me to broaden my knowledge to other units right now I’m addicted to the 4L60E and have been for years it all started with the 700R4 and TH400/4L80 and TH350 and 350C General motor is junkie lol 😝 ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
