This is most likely the best all time vido I have ever seen of someone tearing down one of these overdrive units. Broken down and explained exactly what you need and why you do it in easy to follow steps. Well done sir.
Having looked at most the transmission vids on TH-cam ( I have a 4 year degree in Industrial Technology and minor in television production from a major university) I taught high school and jr college welding and automotive 15 years) I have made my own instructional videos, had my students make instructional videos. This actually started in the 1970s. Then in the 1990s, I started teaching. Prior to that I had worked in the transportation and construction industries for some 30 years. Health issues forced me to recareer into education in the early 1990s. I was using cassette by then when most people didnt even have a video camera. My very first camera was a Panasonic B/W reel to reel deck unit in the late 1970s. I took a lot of horse shows and rodeos back then. So, my point is transmission bench has the very best education videos on here bar none! Very well organized and scripted! The rest of you guys just take things apart with little or no explanation and just throw the parts here and there. No parts evaluation explanation. The most interesting part is most of you dont even show re assembly!!
I agree, and rebuilding my first tranny these videos give me the confidence necessary to know I can do this...I have like you said seen many trying to find a viable source of great detail and this is the course for me.
Hands down best video to watch while also working on your own 46rh transmission! Step by step process and may sound like a silly robotic read me lines from the director type shit, lol but this is definitely best video to learn from and you can make fun of the way this guy talks as you go throughout your day.... lol.. FYI, Richard down at precision transmission, is hands down the absolute best at dodge transmissions of any kind.... the best mechanic for sure... thats precision transmission on TH-cam.. I'm currently rebuilding my 92 dodge w150 with a 318motor and automatic 4wd 46rh transmission and I'm still in the garage after breaking a line full of trans fluid I got my truck home and haven't drove her since an that day was 9 months ago atleast. . . Its an everyday struggle having no job no wheels an no friends to rely on or count on. Because life us not easy for everyone. Ppl like me struggle just to eat. I work hard and smart everyday helping my mom with repairs on her hone and upkeep on the property as well as remodeling some all awhile being uncle Aaron of 3 kids she helps raise. Because my brother can't do it himself cause he doesn't try and well my opinion on my brother ill leave it at that cause tall don't want my opinion on a person uoeno yalll here for dodge transmissions haha.. anyways precision transmission look it up..
Incredible amount of detail, you should look into skill share to make videos. Thank you for taking the time to truly make a guide. Better info than my damn Chilton's for sure
Outstanding lessons. You really need to be some kind of moron to give a thumbs down to these videos. Iv worked on transmissions before and never have seen such valuable and thorough smart videos. If you can’t fix a transmission after watching this video you need to check your head for some brain damage. Thanks for these magnificent videos.
Thank you guys over at T.B helped me understand how to remove the components of my overdrive housing so i can replace it (cracked due to my differential seizing up)
You didn’t mention the tool you used to compress the roller bearing or how to make it even though it’s just three bolts welded together into a pyramid shape I just thought I would point that out so you could make the classroom video lesson even better
Is it possible to fix a leak between the transmission and the overdrive unit by changing the o-ring in the applied piston and the gasket without taking the whole transmission apart?
Sry, but what have I missed? I notice upon the removal of the overdrive from the housing, there wasn't the 3 ring\small piston housing behind the roller bearings?? Mines have that, does anyone know what's the name of that part?
In this vid the instructor mentioned that there were 4 places in the transmission that were under spring tension, this is incorrect, for example the 800lb spring in the overdrive section is a compression spring
Hi. Thank you for these videos. I had a 46re rebuilt 10 months ago. Now I’m doing a hemi swap into a 02 durango. The problem I’m coming across is there isn’t a stand-alone tcm. Is there anyway to get a stand-alone tcm or is there anyway around it? Thank you
I'm a few years late but a lot of people recommend shocking them by smacking them with a hammer a few times before attempting removal. Some heat couldn't hurt. You can also try tightening before loosening.
Hey first off great video. This video has helped lots. I have to ask though, when you said remove a thick plate or thin plate depending on the model, why is there a difference in plates sizes on the 46re? I have both sizes and I'm trying to rebuild a overdrive unit. One housing was cracked so I found one to swap over parts, But have noticed this difference. Is there any significance in these different sizes?
i was doin great until i heard 11mm OR 7/16 inch , those are not either or kinds of tool but specific and different sizes, when you start suggesting things to round off nuts and bolts you lost all credibility as a mechanic with me
Fasteners are generally manufactured with a tolerances allowance of 4-8 thousands of an inch. So, those two size tools are actually closer in size than two bolts of the same exact size are expected to be during production. For all practical standard purposes, those two hand tool sizes are interchangeable. Interchanging 1/2” with 13mm or , 9/16 with 15mm, is a different story. Trying to interchange them will sometimes work(because of fastener tolerances) but will more often result in damaged fasters. 👍

This gentleman is a professional and great instructor.Thank you sir for your time.God bless from Florida

It would be awesome if you sell videos like this on a wide range of transmissions, such as Hondas or Toyotas, etc.
Gen X Murse70 I bet you could find that information somewhere on the dark web
am an old gearhead excellent video guy should be a teacher to teach teachers. have done this job many times really good job on this video !!!!!!👍👍👍
Thank you for these great videos. They are the best I've ever seen on you tube.
Jesus I know this guy ain’t flat rate. I almost fell asleep! I love your videos!!

Thank you for a great video on teardown o/d caution of very heavy spring
Thank you guys over at T.B helped me understand how to remove the components of my overdrive housing so i can replace it (cracked due to my differential seizing up)
Awesome. Really detailed. Can't believe I just found this channel.
Thank you sir. Now I know how it looks inside and that I won't be able to replace any bearings unless I take it all apart.
I love this channel!

too bad I don't have a shop press. where can I rent one also where do I buy the 3 prong adapter for the press
I have the 46rh need to know which models and years have the same ext.housing and also how to remove with out making problems
Is it possible to fix a leak between the transmission and the overdrive unit by changing the o-ring in the applied piston and the gasket without taking the whole transmission apart?
hi Jimmy do you have video on chrysler jeep 2005 CRD kj liberty545 RFE transmission
cheers lee
Are the steel clutch rings, and friction rings the same size, or should I label them?
The bob Ross of transmissions
Is this the same way to rebuild the 42re
Sry, but what have I missed? I notice upon the removal of the overdrive from the housing, there wasn't the 3 ring\small piston housing behind the roller bearings?? Mines have that, does anyone know what's the name of that part?
I have a 46re I'm rebuilding and want to know why the brand new sprag I put in rotates both ways.
Great video
On the tail housing my 1998 Laramie 5.2 don’t have a vss sensor ?
Hey jimmy. Why is it that my o d. Housing isnt wanting to come off as easy as yours did?
I HAVE A QUESTION, IS THIS TRANSMISSION THE ONE THAT USES RAM SECOND GENERATION 1500 V6 ENGINE?
In this vid the instructor mentioned that there were 4 places in the transmission that were under spring tension, this is incorrect, for example the 800lb spring in the overdrive section is a compression spring
He had to have meant compression not tension. Technically when you are taking those parts out they will go from compression to tension
My overdrive wont come lose! Its stuck. I got lose about 1 cm then its a stop. And now i wont even go back 😒 whats wrong?
The Intermediate Shaft was broken.. So the planet gear was stock on it. Had to remove it with a press afterwards. Dodge ram 1500 5.2L v8 4x4 year2001
How do I identify which transmission I have?
How close is the 42re to this transmission?
I am just taking my overdrive unit off my truck. Do I still need to take off the output sensor?
17 dislikes???? I wish their names and addresses were listed so I could purge them. Great video man,,,little manotanas but great work
Part number or name of the smaller bearing in the extension housing?
Please do a 545 rfe class🙏🏼
Where did you get that mechanic's pick at
Thanks for the info but could have made it in half the time I did speed it up to 2 times which helped
grhman thanks for the tip lol

No you have to use the Hemi computer as it contains the TCM
Actually there is I was wrong, sorry.
How do you find the date and year of the trans?
ya mine doesnt have a speed sensor
The T25 bolts wont budge on mine . They are rusted and feel like they are going to strip lol .
Get a propane torch and give them heat for a minute.
Try spraying
Lol bro i just stripped mine how did you get out of it? might have to hammer in a t27 with some hear
heat*
I'm a few years late but a lot of people recommend shocking them by smacking them with a hammer a few times before attempting removal. Some heat couldn't hurt. You can also try tightening before loosening.
The sound of those ratchets are so satisfying
so doing a 2 wheel drive same as 4 wheel drive
Pretty much identical

thank you for this vedio imfrom thailand if you come thailand pease call me
Omg man your awesome but damn throw some personality into it i caught myself pulling a highschool dozing off session lol
i was doin great until i heard 11mm OR 7/16 inch , those are not either or kinds of tool but specific and different sizes, when you start suggesting things to round off nuts and bolts you lost all credibility as a mechanic with me
If the socket don’t fit just find one 🤷♂️. 11mm and 7/16 are about the same
