  • These .22 rifles are orphans in my collection. They don't really fit with any of my other rifles. The Anschutz CIL 125, the Husqvarna Sakrat, and the BSA Sportsman Model 15. Join me for a look, see how they compare to each other, and hopefully learn something new about these "one-of-a-kind" USOG collectibles. The Husky is a model 155. People call them “Säkrat” rifles since that’s usually the only markings that appear on the rifle. However, it’s simply referring to the safety position.
    Great little rifles. Simpson Limited was selling these a while back on their site. You could snag one for $100-$200 depending on condition. I managed to get 2 decent ones with the more desirable octagonal barrels and straight stock. They cleaned up nicely after some oil and a stock refinish.

      Thank you! I had no idea and had been told the model is "Sakrat" hahaha. I thought so myself. Now I know. Glad you bought 2 - the octagon is not so easy to find.

    I was so sad I missed getting that BSA I wanted, but someone bought it just hours before I got to the dealer. To get over my sadness, I bought a hard used lever gun. I think that makes perfect sense!

    Have plenty of these Down Under, specially BSAs :)
    Grandfather shot small bore and won many competitions with his old Anschutz rifles. He gave his original 22 that he got when he was an understudy clerk from his boss, to my brother. Was an old single shot 22 Stitz rabbit/youth rifle. Over 100 years old and still deadly accurate @ 50 yards.

    I appreciate your time spent on showing the differences of affordable (and often largely forgotten about) arms. My sister runs a chainsaw for a living and is a big fan of Husqvarna chainsaws. She was delighted to receive one of those Sakrats for Christmas. I thought the octagonal barrel gave a nice little touch of class to the otherwise garden grade rifle. Fun little shooter.

    While stuck at home with a light case of COVID, I started watching USOG. Ehen I saw this video, I was fascinated by the Husqvarna .22 single-shot. It reminded me of a rifle my grandfather owned many years ago. I'm not but I started searching online, found a nice one at a good price from a reputable seller, and am buying it today. Like antique gold coins, old quality rifles have two kinds of value appreciation, scarcity and the art that created the gun. Thank you for your helping people like me enjoy these instruments. Best, Marvin C.

    The little Anschutz rifle has an action that looks like the American equivalent of the Savage Anschutz model 64. I had one in .22lr. and one in .22mag. Their big brother was the model 54 sporter. It was a very well made and very finely finished rifle. I traded into one of those years ago. As you mentioned to me earlier, I am talking in past tense I am getting old and I have tried to own them all. Just couldn't own them all at the same time. Unfortunately at that time I didn't have access to the Internet to find out something about the rifle. I liked octagon barrel and the interesting hammer /safety. A lot of the reasons you list as to why you started this channel are the same as to what got me into commenting. The notion you have of going to where young people are at and reaching out to them is exactly the right move. I wish more in the gun community would do this, but far too often I witness a significant portion of the gun community doing things that alienate young people.
    The Husqvarna with the octagonal barrel is really cool and BSA is tough to beat. I like how you encourage people to look for quality guns at good prices. As the old saying goes, an Anschutz is an Anschutz is an Anschutz no matter if it is found on the used gun rack or new on the shelf.

But anyone and everyone that was around guns their whole lives now days they probably started out with a 22 LR, like myself. The 22 LR I started out with was a Winchester Model 57 that was made back in the 1930's.Got lucky and it was handed down to me with other guns.

    I've got many fond memories of going out and shooting a bsa sportsman 15 with a screw on parker hale silencer while in college. You had to unscrew the damn silencer everytime you had to reload the magazine Haha, but it wasnt too bad. My lecturer at college used to let me and my friends borrow it and his truck and drive around the college (it was an agricultural college in the British countryside) and go out and shoot crows, magpies, squirrels and rabbits. He sadly passed away shortly after I left college but good memories

    This is actually really cool!
    Funny story, I acquired a barreled reciever from a simson karabiner 22 from an old gunsmith. I could not find barely any information online about it except a few pics. I wanted to try and re make a bolt and extractor for it and then make a stock for it as the bore was still fairly useable. Over the span of a year I made my own bolt extractor and custom stock for it. I'd love to show you some pictures sometime of it. The original gun would have been identical to that first husky you showed. Barrel stamped 'simson suhl karaboner'
    It's most likely a pre war manufacture... possibly 1930s. Thought I'd share a story. I love my 22s

    That's a Husqvarna Salongevar. I don't know exactly what model. I own a Husqvarna Salongevar 255 (with round profile barrel). Salongevar means shooting parlor rifle. As for "säkrat", that means "secured". Indicated the "safe" position of the safety lever. Because it's the only marking on the rifle, some gun dealers assumed that was the name of it.

  • @jimmasson4297
    @jimmasson4297 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you may find that the drilled holes on the left side of the receiver are for an optional aperture sight. I have had a few of the 'Sportsman' models, (single shot and five round box magazine) and they all had the holes in the same place. The Husky's were also made in 25-20 (whatever the Euro title is). Neat little rifles.

  • @duggydo

    I really like that Husqvarna. I have soft spot for single shot rifles. I shot my grandfather's winchester 67 a lot as a kid and killed countless squirrels, rabbits, sparrows and starlings around his farm. Unfortunately that rifle has a bulge in the barrel due to an inferior .22 short round that didn't leave the barrel and he fired another right after. My neighbor also had what I believe was a rolling block .22 with an octagonal barrel that he let me shoot quite a bit as a kid. I don't remember the make or model as that was many, many decades ago!

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 67 with the bulge may still shoot well. I bought some of these over time and not one didn't shoot well. I never did figure out why the accuracy was not ruined - but there it is. The rolling block: such a darling .22 - not matter what make. I had a Remington - can't remember the model number but it was a fine rifle. I admired the simplicity of the rolling block.

    I bought the first firearm I have ever owned in January 2020. I wanted something inexpensive but reliable. (You know the inaccuracy is you when the machine is reliable.) I found an Anschutz 1400 that I have been having a great time with. I felt ‘just right’ in my hands so I got it. I think the markings show 1969 made in West Germany. Found parts sales here in the US and got a 2nd magazine. I enjoy your relaxed presentation and the striking depth of your knowledge. Could you give more close ups , especially of the barrel markings? Thanks anyways for the great videos.

    Another good post. As a person new to collecting unique and vintage .22 rifles I find your descriptions and reviews very helpful. Three questions on other .22 rifles. First, your thoughts on the KIMBER M82 GOVERNMENT. Second, your thoughts about the Craftsmanship , Accuracy, and Precision of competition. 22 rifles like the ANSCHUTZ M1918 54.18 and similar rifles. Third, your feelings on custom .22 rifles like the VOLQUARTSEN SUMMIT. One last entreaty, if you were to engage a gunsmith to build a .22 rifle totally from scratch, what would be your requests for all major subsystems [ barrel, sights, stock, trigger, bolt, safety, etc. ] and final fitting / assembly ? Thank you !

    Things I love, a long list comes to mind and old 22's is towards the top!
    I'll keep my eyes peeled for one of the Husqvarna models, that rifle spoke to me!
    How about a review of the Stevens 87A-22lr or the Stevens 107B shotguns?
    These two models were produced under various model numbers and for multiple store brands much like the Winchester/Ted Williams 94's. My Stevens guns belonged to my grandfather and while both are fairly easy to find in gun shops and pawn shops, their sentimental values to me are priceless. Thanks!

    Most of these old guns with poor sights need a scope so that they can become useful. I am also a collector but I get sick and tired of looking at a gun that I can't shoot passed 50 yard because of the sights.

    Some of the unfortunate part about reference ie shooters bible/digest is they don’t cover some specialty runs for large dirstrutors. I picked up a Remington 700 varmint special, marked “first production” on the barrel from a friend (older collector) and had a very hard time finding out info on it. From what I read it was made in 1992 and was the first year they made a gun chambered in 220 swift. Could you do a video on some of the more well known gunsmiths of the 20th century? Also what are your thoughts on Ackley improved cartridges? The weatherbys made in Germany were made by sauer, which I’d like to get one eventually but right now it may not be in the budget. Thanks

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns

      Good idea - I can do that. As for Ackley Improved cartridges I think I like them all. One of my top cartridges is the .257 Roberts Ackley Improved - the Roberts is already great - and with the Improved chamber I can use factory rounds - or the significantly faster Ackley loading.I also like the 30-06 Ackley Improved and the .250 Savage AI - well....l like them all. : )

The guy said he is going to give me a single shot 12 gauge for fixing up his Anshutz 111 22lr and a beeman pellet air rifle. It is a fixer up single shot but it will be worth it in the end once its fixed up by me. I wouldnt mind to own this 22lr.

      Hello, If it has a small action and small bolt handle and longish barrel, they are sometimes called Sakrat. $200. to $500. Some are plain; some are engraved and octagon barrel... therefore the broad price range and of course condition. Hope this helps.

    Merry Christmas .. I have a question that centers around jacketed bullets that with your knowledge you may know the answer.. Why do match grade bullets require faster barrel twist rates than hunting bullets do ? I own a 6mm with 1 in 10" twist that groups all bullet weights from 55 grain to 105 grain with excellent groups from 4 major bullet makers .. A few months back i bought a box of 100 grain Match bullets that keyhole no matter what i do with the load.. I have read this information In Sierra's new manual for example they list Match 90 grain with 1 in 9" or faster , 100 grain with 1 in 8" or faster and 107 grain with 1 in 7.5" or faster twist.. Do you know why this is with Match bullets ? As some years ago this was not the case...Thank you ..

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Merry Christmas Norman! The Matchkings typically have boat tails - meaning that the bullet diameter to length is distorted compared to the shorter, flat base bullets. In some brands a 90 grain boat tail has a length comparable to a 120 grain bullet due to the boat tail. Hope this helps.

    • @normanmallory2055
      @normanmallory2055 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UnitedStatesOfGuns Yes the Matchkings do i have loaded them and fired them for 56 years now .. My largest question is why out of the blue sky are some bullet boxes marked , for 1 in 9 barrel twist or higher, or 1 in 9 barrel twist or higher or 1 in 7.5 barrel twist or higher ?? Why is that ?? Why are bullet boxes of certain bullets (match) now marked with this information ?? Matchkings have been around for years and have won matches all across this country .. Now all of sudden the newest reloading manuals , Sierra, Hornady now mark in RED writing bullet barrel twist specific ? What is behind that? I have never owned any firearm that shot keyhole bullet impacts in my life until now .. The box of match grade bullets do not say on the box the are for a certain barrel twist ... I'm guess as i don't know is it because my barrel twist is 1 in 10 and are these bullets designed for 1 in 8 twist ? I don't know , i have no way of knowing that's the cause ...In Sierra's 2003 reloading manual there is not one word about barrel twist on any of their bullets , the newest manual is filled with the same Matchking bullets that now require certain barrel twist , why ? What has changed ? And they are not just bullets for AR platforms calibers .. If they were then i could narrow it down ... thanks for the reply ..

    I'll be looking for a quality old single shot. One I can put dioptric sights on and use for precision shooting.
    As for the cosmetic marks, I got a Spanish 8mm mauser (circa 1950s) of the kar98 pattern. The stock is the cheapest of cheap, old and cracking butt pad, the barrel has pitting all over the outside. Paid $9O(or I will soon), but the dam thing put 4 bullets through the same hole in then paper. Too ugly for pretty much any collector, but that old gun can shoot!

      USOG Don't get me wrong, a beautifully made old rifle, in perfect shape is a thing of beauty. I'm just saying looks don't make it shoot well, and in the end, that's what they're for, but when you get both? That's pretty awesome. My beat up old 8mm Mauser
      Is still pretty cool though. Has some history to it for sure. The scars prove that.
      Only thing I have like that is a Swedish 1942 mauser, that is totally stock, and in perfect condition. Shoots like a dream. I really love it. It's not like the stuff you have, but it's my little piece of history that I get to take to the range.
