As an indian who has lived in Nigeria for 8 years and west Africa for 26 years I can say the potential to do great things in the sporting arena is in abundance in africa. Being an indian and knowing the amount of money my country spends on its athletes since the last 2 Olympics I can say that the return on investment has been very disappointing as we have not won much medals in the olympics. We did not even touch double digits in our medals tally. As far as Africa or more so west Africa it is the matter of just political will to do well in Olympics. Talent is every where. Boxing, track and field, football, basketball just to name a few. Look at south sudan they are a success story of Paris Olympics. Mali, senegal, Cote d'amore, Cameroon, Nigeria, ghana have all potential to do amazing things in the sporting field without a doubt.

I'm a Kenyan and from what I saw, Nigeria really has the talent but need to prepare better. Kenyan 10,000m and 5,000m athletes run for 12kms on a daily basis for 4 years to win medals and sometimes they still miss out; it really takes great preparation.

How can Nigeria be a sporting nation, we don't have sporting infrastructures, no standard sporting education, no technical coaches or instructors, no basic training facilities, no accessible sport centers, no grassroot developments programs, no motivation, no encouragement, just different office holders who collects and steal all financial allocations. I can tell you for a fact, a local secondary school here in Russia has more standard sporting facilities (which is accessible to anyone 24/7) than a whole state in Nigeria

As a Uganda, I truly believe Nigeria is a sporting nation because some of those Africans representing other countries are Nigerian. The problem is that the government does not care to train the athletics for years and facilitate them well.
Even for us here in Uganda, our government does not put much into training, so the athletes put in upon themselves to train together. Infact some of the gold medalists in Uganda train in Kenya.

The USA Olympic team's annual spending can vary significantly depending on the Olympic cycle. For example, spending tends to increase during the years leading up to and including the Summer and Winter Games. Nigeria should start interstate sports competition among various states every year with large bonuses for the winners. Just like the country of Jamaica does with their inter parish track and field Competitions. NIgerian government and their various states need to build modern training sports facilities to keep up with modern times. Sports just like the entertainment industry is also a job creation industry and great sources of foreign exchange revenue if harnessed properly.

      Actually no!
      I"m KEnyan too.
I'm older and I can remember the Nigeria of Chidi Imoh, Innocent Egbunike , David Ezinwa, Endurance Ojokolo, a very fast lady, and the great Mary Omagbemi Onyali and the even greater Chioma Ajunwa who won the Olympics long jump gold I think in Atlanta, Spain 1996.
Then there is that famous 4x400m relay team that won Sydney 2000 Olympics after the U. S. was disqualfied over doping.
Chidi Imoh and Egbunike came to Nairobi in 1987 for the All Africa Games and lit up Kasarani stadium. It was a new stadium then. That was the same games where the great Billy Konchellah won the 800m and President DAniel Arap Moi stood for Konchellah. His dad was an Assistant Minister in Moi's government then: Hon. John Konchellah.
Nigeria was great. Nigeria used to be great. I have no idea as to what happened to them.
They have the young OFili who wasn't even entered in the 100m because someone forgot! That is a sin!
Tobi Amusan, as the panelists said, froze on the big stage. She's the world record holder. I had her going to the final. She couldn't.

Nigeria is a bunch of tribes pretending to be a country. In fact, I will venture to say there has not been any element of nation building in Nigeria since independence. In fact after the Civil War, Nigeria took purposeful steps to foster the tribal identity and constitution of the country. So when nations meet, and Nigeria shows up, it’s hard to tell whether they are coming with their best or a representation of the tribes. Or maybe a group of the well connected or what have you.
Secondly, the athletes we see at the Olympics are not just random guys gathered from the streets a few weeks before the games. These athletes spend months and years preparing and perfecting their crafts. For that to be possible, they have to have sponsorship from companies and organizations that spend money so these athletes can fully dedicate to what they do without having to worry about sustenance. The days of haphazard preparation and just showing up at the games are gone. The athletes we see at the Olympics are either on scholarships from universities or on sponsorship from companies or institutions.
Those countries like Nigeria who want to show up every four years and compete with people who have been working on their craft for years are obviously wasting their time.
The corruption is not the problem. Corruption is just a symptom of things not done right.

In the 90s, Nigeria used to win medals. There was a bit of rivalry between the US and Nigeria in sprints. Nigeria has regressed from those days. It is not for the lack of talent and athletes. Nigeria has scores of Bolts, Powells, Gatlins, Gays, and Lyles... They have just not been developed... Fundamentally, it is not just the state of Nigeria, but it is a whole society problem, that requires a whole society solution. People have to be willing to set aside places for recreation. People have to be in communities ready to allow their children to participate in sports and help run sports clubs of all manner of different sports from track and field athletics through to gymnastics, swimming, judo etc... All Nigeria now cares about is football, football, football...

I hope you guys can take it because I am going to be brutally honest. First we shall compare Nigeria to other West African countries. Are you aware that Senegal has produced NBA players at a rate (per 100,000 of population) 9 X the rate of Nigeria even though they are French speaking and Nigeria speaks English? I think, in spite of the exceptions (Tobi Amusan, Hakeem Olajuwan, etc.) Nigerians are not particularly talented athletically. Probably the more important reason is that Blacks from the United States and The Caribbean countries went through 400 years of being bred like race horses for the purpose of producing stronger farm workers and fighters (for gambling). As an example, more of the Africans brought to Jamaica came from the region now known as Ghana than any other West African country. The first World Athletics Championship occurred in 1983. Since then Ghana has won 2 medals and their current population is 33.48 million. Jamaica has won 149 medals and their population is 2.83 million. In other words, Jamaicans have won medals at a rate which is 88,036% higher than Ghana's. A rate 400 or 500% greater would be statistically significant. Nigeria's performance, relative to the size of its population, is worst than Ghana's.

I'm so glad i got to experience Nigerian sports in the 90s because it has been terrible in recent years. Back in the day you could count on Nigeria to at least battle for bronze in Athletics, they would battle for Silver in boxing and weightlifting (cuba was invincible ) and even table tennis. I agree with the analysts, Nigerian officials dont care, as long as they are lining their pockets with those allocated funds, good riddance.

How can people say "we have money"? When the United Nations has launched an appeal to feed 4 million malnourished children in North East Nigeria. If Nigeria has money, why isn't the nutritional needs of it's children a priority?
Why are people dying of cholera?
I wouldn't mind no medals if every child can have enough to eat and have access to clean drinking water on a daily basis.
