A mini-series like a Band of brothers or Chernobyl is the best balance of both. It gets a little deeper into the story then a movie, but doesn't over stay its welcome like a seasonal TV series.

Or hundreds of other series. Series are much better at adapting books or telling long form stories with extended arcs. To say one medium is better than the other is a pointless argument because they're set up to produce different products. I understand Quinten Tarantino is baised because he makes movies and this is just a snippet of a three hour interview, but it can be tedious listening to him speak for longer than 30 minutes. He's become such a pretentious narcissist that I almost don't want to hear him ramble about how great he is all the time because I love his movies and sometimes it's difficult to separate the art from the artist.

The first season of True Detective plays out like an 8 part epic. Ties in the past, to the present, to a new and unfolding plot - and resolves a massive mystery with two insanely detailed, complicated characters. The Rust getting caught up in the biker gang jacking the guy's house...and how he gets out of the whole situation - epic story presentation!

Agreed. There are so many streaming sites and tv channels that most shows are bound to be bad or drag out. But AMC, HBO, Amazon, Apple, Netflix etc... have produced amazing series with a few 10 episode seasons. They don't drag on and also tell a longfrom story with top notch production and talented actors. There are more bad tv shows because they're produced significantly more than movies. But most movies are garbage so both entertainment mediums are guilty of over producing subpar product's. To say one medium is better than the other is asinine. There are great movies and great series, and each can be more effective to tell a particular story.

TV is like the 1st and 2nd act of a movie if the 2nd act just kept reinventing itself over and over. For me what Quentin is saying is TV rarely writes a killer 3rd act (because they don’t want the money to end)- this deeply effects the overall structure. Good movies accomplish closure and that’s rare for a series.

It would have been better if it ended after Jim and Pam got together. The later seasons are, for me, unwatchable with absurd plots. Seinfeld might be a better example of what you are saying, but Curb your enthusiasm I think is a better show because each season is tightly written with a clear end that it builds to and that puts the earlier episodes into a proper narrative. Anthologies are better. True Detective and Fargo are some of the best that tie everything up in a neat if not sometimes unsettling bow at the end of each season. Breaking Bad, The Boys, Game of Thrones up to season 4, Mad Men, house of the dragon. They all got better as the seasons went on. Some shows like Daredevil, Loki, Preacher, Mandalorian, Peacemaker, and The Walking dead have a really great start that’s worth a watch. The rest of these series aren’t as good or have pacing issues but they’re still okay.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer really pioneered the seasonal arc on network TV. The finale of each season brought several storylines, character arcs and relationships(sometimes ranging over different seasons) together in a collision that had genuine stakes and consequences.
In particular, the finale of S2 was just soul shattering in its brutally operatic climax. It is haunting to this day, a quarter century later.
The show could well have ended on S5, with its definitive acknowledgement of The Slayer's destiny and the Pyrrhic victory of "The Gift".
But the 7th season series finale resolved the central dilemma posed all the way back in the series pilot in a marvelously satisfying way.

Depends on story depth and the conclusion you want for the main characters. The Dark Knight demonstrates this perfectly. But I find there are a lot of movies that are cut too short with a significant number of questions about the story/characters that audience members might have.
To me it all comes down to the writing and the acting. There are a lot of movies out there that I completely forget about because the writing was mediocre and there was no 'awe' in the storyline. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt's 'The Fall Guy' I've already forgotten about. There was no awe in the story.
But Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, The Witcher, (some might say it's too political but if you look past it) The Boys, are all that COULD NOT work as a movie. There are simply too many factors in the storyline that they have no choice but to make it longer.
All comes down to how well the writers, actors, and setting can grab your attention and keep it for the duration of the screentime.

I’m open to stories in any medium as long as they’re executed well. However, when done right, shows have the unique advantage of delving deeply into character development and allowing narratives to unfold at a slower, more deliberate pace, giving themes and emotions the space to resonate. Assuming each episode is an hour long, you're given the opportunity to dive deep into characters and plot, with the entire season offering a multi-layered experience, assuming it’s well-executed. Movies, on the other hand, require precision in pacing and storytelling, where every piece must fit perfectly to create a cohesive whole. While both formats require careful pacing, because all great stories do, the shorter runtime of movies leaves little room for error, making meticulous storytelling an absolute necessity. Which directors like Christopher Nolan beautifully excel at.

tv show storytelling is better currently than movies bc there's no need to pander to overseas investors which limit artistic expression. For drama shows, there needs to be a season limit to give a good ending (like 4 or 5 seasons). For comedy shows, they for sure can drag it out until season 10 bc its about the characters rather than plot

      @badbutgood-d4q 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

@X123-c2j never said tv shows have zero flaws. Overseas has waaay more restrictions on the kind of stories they'll give money to hence why film is only funding remakes & sequels that guarantee making their money back from overseas audience. GoT was popular bc they killed off main characters & popular characters. TWD is another example of this. Networks cancel shows left & right willingly losing money despite the audience protesting. Tv shows may have some pandering but not to the extreme that they refuse to fund different genres of projects like the film industry does. A24 is one of the few that actually take chances on risky projects

@arcguardian pandering in regards to oversea investors & audiences who r the top priority to satisfy according to the few major productions companies that have monopoly of the film industry & can choose what film projects to greenlight. Hence why there r only remakes & sequels being made. It guarantees a return on investment bc they get the most money from oversea audiences. If they lose money in America, they make it up from other countries paying to watch it. The country's govt r the ones who decide if a film is allowed to play in their theaters. Therefore, tight restrictions on genres of storytelling & their content (pandering). Meh im not gonna say ur bad for not enjoying dramas lol its ur personal preference dude. If u like crazy action packed films then cool idc I like them too lol but I also like drama TV shows bc I get bored of only consuming one genre. John wick makes a ton of profit overseas so that means they get to have giant financing in their budget to afford the high-tech equipment, top of the line stunt crew/choreographer, & marketing. TV shows don't get that huge budget bc they don't cater to overseas investors nor depend on oversea audience to help make up the financial loss if they did spend that much money. TV shows profits rely on the American audience to make it successful enough to do another season w hopefully a better budget. The most they can do it crazy cgi like GoT & the new Harry Potter series coming soon

I hate how tv plot advancement is always hijacked by misunderstandings and just straight up dumb shit. Television shows try to see how long they can go, it's all about stretching out disposable content. Movies don't (or shouldn't) have time to include filler, but tv shows often feel like they're 40% filler.
A movie knows it has a limit and has to tell a story within that time limit, but it has to work harder to get you to care for the characters because of this so everything has to be polished. They have higher budgets, so everything doesn't feel like it has a cheap veneer like TV shows often do. There's a spectacle movies provide that TV just can't replicate.
But shows that lean into the drama, like Better Call Saul and Ozark etc. provide something movies generally can't. When you spend a lot of time with a good character, you really care for them. It makes those big moments mean more.

Dumb take, The Haunting of Hill House was more memorable, artistic, and well crafted than any horror movie that came out in the last 30 years. I think a series is the better medium than movies by default cause of its longer runtime, just like how a feature-length film is superior to a short film. You get to write stories that are way more complex and fully realised than a movie. The only reason Shows Fall Short in the production department is because they dont have very high budgets. Like the budget for a movie is terms of dollars per minute is way higher than a Tv Shows dollar per minute. It's really hard to get that crazy cinematography shots in shows consistently cause of time and money contraints. Plus, you have to take into account that modern TV Industries is relatively new. It didn't really come into its own until Sopranos came and became a respectable subgenre of Cinema. We have way fewer examples of TV shows done right, but the number is growing.

The episodic format of 1 hour was born just to add commercials, to fit the schedule of the TV, it is completely unnatural, there is a reason why the format of 3,5-4.5 hours with an intermission has being the norm for the greatest works of humanity in opera, theater or cinema. Even then, after a single work you can continue the story with another one, like Der Ring Des Nibelungen, Il Trittico or in movies divided into Part I, II and III, like The Human Condition, The Apu Trilogy. Quentin forgets
That he’s not on the same level as many other directors.
His movies, even if you aren’t particularly into whatever story he may be telling, are always unforgettable and beautifully and masterfully done!
On that note I Can Concede, Quentin’s movies are far better than shows.

Quinten has a creative way of saying most shows are drawn out. True, I think that's the point though. Breaking Bad has so many details in its story to appreciate, and that means people will watch it again. I think he might be conflating memorability with impact. Breaking Bad is more impactful, but less memorable, yet because of that, I've watched the series 3 times over in the span of a decade, each time appreciating a different perspective, and rediscovering forgotten details. This is why people love TV.

"Cast Away" and "Almost Famous" are two of my all-time favorite films that really showcase the power of a self-contained story. They have that perfect blend of pacing, depth, and emotional weight that might have been diluted if stretched into a TV series. It’s fascinating how certain narratives can hit harder in a confined, 90-120 minute space-almost as if the brevity is what allows them to breathe. Stretching those films out could have risked losing their spark, or worse, turning them into something less urgent. There's a unique kind of magic in a well-crafted movie that doesn't always translate to episodic storytelling.
