      There's something about biopics lately that feel fake and disrespectful. At least from Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis and now this one. Rocketman and The Dirt feel less pandering, messy and Oscar bait than the other modern biopic movies. Sam Taylor's filmography THRIVES on the sketchy biopics lol. Hopefully James Mangold's Bob Dylan biopic is one of the good ones.

    I’m sick of people using the same “consenting adults” argument to explain away age gaps and grooming. Just because someone turns 18 doesn’t magically make them of sound enough mind to not be susceptible to predatory behavior.
    Also, there shouldn’t be a double standard. DiCaprio hooking up with comparative children is super gross as well and he should be canceled for it.

Do you think you would even exist to make this comment? The human race might have very well gone extinct generations ago if all of the young women who married and had children in their late teens never had those children. Most people alive today wouldn't even exist. Up until recently, most people would graduate from high school, immediately get married, and start families. Had they never done that, there would probably be just a few dozen people left on the planet; if that. You guys create moral standards out of thin air and can't even say where you got them from. My mother told me once, that there are usually 3 factors that are at play in relationships with large age gaps (and gender is irrelevant). Sex, money, drugs. Idc what anyone says, an 18 year old and a 40- something year old have absolutely NOTHING in common. The mind set is different. The body set is different. EVERYTHING is different. And when you think about it, it really is gross. When he was born, she was in her 20s, already out of high school, probably in her own place, driving a car, dealing with finances ... and he was just born! So gross.

      @@admiralfrancis8424 When they met, he was a child. She was a grown ass woman. You won't know that the age gap is causing harm because you're not in the relationship. If a glowing 15 year old starting talking about their wonderful 25 year old lover, would it seem harmful? Probably not. Yet it would still be wrong. She directed a movie he was in which is how they met so she was already in a position of authority over him. The power imbalance was even worse in their situation. No teenager is able to consent to a relationship with someone old enough to be their parent.

    • @admiralfrancis8424
      @admiralfrancis8424 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      @@misspriss2482 First of all, unless she groomed him during his childhood, I don't care. Second of all, if someone in an age gap relationship told you that that there isn't/wasn't any harm being done, would you believe them? Or would you move the goalpost and say they were brainwashed? Third of all, was Aaron 17 or 18 when he filmed with his then future wife? If 18, then unless he was groomed from an earlier age, then I don't care. Meeting someone as a kid an then years later marrying them when they're an adult, even if barely, is not the same thing as grooming them, especially if the relationship was developed during legal age.
      Fourth of all, every relationship has a power imbalance, even if one partner is not richer than the other. Anyone of every age is susceptible to predatory manipulation, that's why cults are so common. Finally, as long as someone is 18+, then let them date whoever they want. You can't protect young adults from everything. If you are going to say that 18 year olds are not mature enough to date whomoever they want, then you might as well ban them from voting, considering that the consequences are more serious than any age gap relationship.

    i genuinely dont understand how people still argue if she groomed him or not. she did. its not "allegations". its literally exactly what happened. like she did the textbook definition of grooming. if you look up groomer in the dictionary her picture would show up. the only reason its debated is because shes a woman and hes a younger man. i hope aaron gets outta there and finds someone whos not predatory towards him

    • @NiklasStrahammer
      @NiklasStrahammer 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      the textbook definition is: targeted contact of minors with intent of sexual abuse (sexual abuse being unconsential sexual actions towards/with minors)
      she didnt contact him, since he auditioned. he was 18 - not a minor. wether she intended to cast an 18 year old in order to sexually abuse him cannot be confirmed/denied.
      You could make the case that he wasnt able to consent bc of some sort of power dynamic and him possibly being a very immature 18-year old. But i think while this situation is undoubtably wierd it's far from "textbook definition" grooming.

    I can say that Sam and Aaron’s relationship was not professional during the filming of Nowhere Boy. There was an article written YEARS back by a journalist who was on set of the film for a while, and he mentioned he would be uncomfortable around Sam and Aaron because they were very flirty and touchy with each other. I recall he wrote that one time on set it started to rain and Sam and Aaron danced in the rain together (I might be getting a few details wrong.) anyway, I think that says a lot. Also I despise Nowhere Boy for cutting out Cynthia Lennon, John’s first wife that he was with during the time period of Nowhere Boy. I have no idea why Sam decided to cut Cynthia out and focus more on some quasi incest relationship between John and his mother.

    A Million Little Pieces is “controversial” due to the fact that the book was marketed as a memoir when it turned out to be mostly fiction. And the writer James Frey got confronted by Oprah about it. Apparently the Publisher agreed to refund certain copies of the book to costumers who bought it thinking it was true. James Frey has continued to be massively successful as a novelist. And the movie came out about 10 years after everyone forgot about the controversy.

      If you want to a watch an actually great biopic I recommend Love and Mercy. It was only made because John Cusak had a unique cinematic idea of how to tell Brian Wilson’s story. Not because music biopics do well, or the execs wanted to drum up some modern interest in The Beach Boys. If anything it’s a pretty awful beach boys movie since it only intensely focuses on Brian during two difficult periods of his life. You can tell the film was a passion project, not just Oscar bait. Also, Paul Dano gives another incredible performance, but that’s to be expected at this point. J

Then she also dated multiple other teens, despite claiming she couldn't consent to a relationship with John Mayer at 19. There shouldn't be double standards for female abusers or male victims. Kathryn Bigelow has had a very consistent career (Detroit was great! Her movie before that was Zero Dark Thirty, was spectactularly well received, as was the Hurt Locker) but you don't hear her name mentioned.

    To the " Nowhere boy" movie, (which I haven't watched) and the relation ship to his mother: In fact, Lennon said in one late interview ( guess in Playboy), that He maybe should have Trier to sleep with his mother. That she has been very open minded, that he could well imagine she would have liked to be asked by him. It is quite gross and disturbing. On the other hand, that was one line in a million interviews, he'd given. He must have had a very ambivalent relationship to his early die mother. But it's hard to say, if the regisseur was even aware of this interview. It's possible she didn't and that it's just her own strange way to write love stories.

    I don't know. It's weird that men seem to get a pass on this, with plenty of directors having relationships with their MUCH younger film stars, including more than one case of those actresses being under legal adult age. And most of the time, those directors don't face much backlash. And those relationships don't tend to end in (seemingly) successful marriages. But we have this woman and her adult (barely at the time, admittedly) star, and suddenly the sky is falling. Is that a big age gap? Yeah. So was the gap between Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, but we don't talk about that 15 years later. Is an 18 or 19 year old mature enough for that kind of relationship? I don't know. I wasn't. But I don't know these people. Hell, I wasn't really mature enough for a good, adult relationship until I was in my 40s.
    I keep thinking about how Roger Moore quit playing James Bond in part because they were pairing him up with women who were his granddaughter's age, and he didn't feel comfortable with it. But the producers did. The public did. Those movies still drew numbers. Also, thinking about it, if there's an age gap where the man is substantially older than the woman, it's just something that happens in the film and isn't really talked about, where as if there's an age gap where the woman is older than the man, that relationship is typically what the film is about. That seems seems weird.

      Yes it happened in the past. It was wrong. And recently we have as a society finally come to a point where we can call it out.
      Look and Leo Dicaprio getting constantly shit on for dating women under 25.
      When Darren Aronofsky was a in a relationship with Jennifer Lawrence while simultaneously casting her in his movie Mother! he rightfully got called out.
      To finally come this far where we can call out a wrong thing for bieng wrong but then demanding that we now give women in Power a pass for doing the same thing because Powerful Men in the past got away with it just seems like taking a step back.

He was also young as fuuuck and hadn’t even had time to form a sense of identity outside of a relationship before being thrust into the role of husband and stepfather-becoming pretty isolated from his peers. As long as both parties are very much independent of the other and don't have to rely on the other for anything, both are at least in equal footing in terms of their careers and time period in life, and one isn't in a position of power that is able to dominate the other one. However given the context of this relationship... even without the egregious age gap, it's doomed from the start.

    The opening shot in Nowhere Boy is a reference to the opening shot in the Beatles’ first feature film A Hard Day’s Night which shows the band running from a crowd of screaming fans. I’m a Beatles freak so I just had to mention that lol. I always thought that was a cool creative decision and it really sucks to know that one of the better Beatles biopics has such a gross story behind its production. You could make a case for some of the weird incesty mother stuff (maybe) being based off of an audio clip of John talking about laying on the couch with his mother when he was a teenager, but I still think it’s a weird way to interpret their dynamic after reuniting. It becomes more disturbing knowing Sam Taylor-Johnson’s actions while she was shooting those very scenes.

    So again I don't have a dog in this race but I still feel the need to hear my own voice and share my opinion..... or I guess in this case read my own voice? Nvm point is these are my casual thoughts.
    First on the controversy of Sam specifically. While the relationship does make me go "Ew" and no amount of legal adult argument will make me change my mind on that, in the States it's sometimes legal for a 14-year-old to marry someone much older than them which I despise. But at the end of the day, they were both consenting adults, it's none of my business and I wish them all the happiness in the world, and since they are still married 12 years later it seems to be going good for them.
    Second her actual skill as a director. I always found it difficult to blame one or even two people on the failure of a movie or show considering how much of a group project it is. Can we blame Sam for the plot when the film is based on a book that was quite terrible especially when most account I have come across says the film is the superior product? That isn't even going into studio interference of pressure from the producer etc that can also have a drastic effect that you as a director just have to deal with. (The one exception is D&D in regards to Game of Thrones, I will throw them under the bus and put all the blame on them until I die.)
    With that said I can't comment a lot on her directing since I only ever saw Fifty Shades after hearing Gilbert Godfried (rip) read a bit of the book. Didn't care for it but romance was never my cup of tea. With that said from a direction standpoint I didn't have any issues with it.
    Finally in regards to the artist affecting the art (This is going to be the longest part cuz I got a lot more skin in this game) it all depends on what the artist did, who is looking at the art, and how good the art itself is and even in what order you're presented with the information, I think if you see the art then hear the controversy you're less likely to judge the art for it, but if you already have a negative opinion of the artist you're going to be extra critical on anything they make.
    For example, I love a series called Rurouni Kenshin, it really is a great story and I recommend it to a lot of people, but the creator (Nobuhiro Watsuki) is a pedo, thats a pretty big hurdle to get over. Another example is George RR Martin, these past few years he has been getting on my nerves (and not just because I am still waiting on those damn books) but if he was to release the next book in his series I am probably going to pick it up and read it in two days. It doesn't have to be Winds of Winter it could be Fire and Blood PT2 and I will still get it, I am an addict. But would I still be an addict if I wasn't a fan of GRRM, to begin with? Hard to say.
    By comparison, I have quite easily cut out a lot of TH-camrs after doing by comparisons to GRRM and especially Watsuki's very minimal issues. Most of these times are politically related, a big pet peeve of mine is demonizing opposition especially on very very very complicated topics, using a recent example I don't care if a creator supports Isreal or Palestine, I do however care when they start demonizing the other. I have my own opinions and I think most people who disagree with me are not the sharpest knives in the drawer (Then again who doesn't think that?) but when you start to make your opponents evil rather than just misinformed or ignorant I take great issue with that.
    However, maybe I am quicker to cut these artists out of my life because their art is very them-focused if that makes sense. When Grrm writes a book it's not like I am enjoying Grrm while TH-camrs it is them who are pulling me in if that makes sense? I hope it does, it makes sense to me so I will leave it at that.
    Anyway enjoyable video as always, nice to think about things I don't often think about on a day-to-day basis. Stay safe and I hope you have a wonderful day. Or I guess evening/night given what time it currently is for you.

      You literally made a statement saying no amount of legal adult argument will change my mind, but then proceeded to make an argument stating they were legal adults and in some states they can get legally married at 14. You literally contradicted yourself in the very next sentence. Just because they have been married for a long time doesn’t indicate happiness and you clearly DON’T have a problem with this type of predatory relationship because like everyone else, proceeded to just make the “well he was a legal consenting adult”.

    • @JasperLane
      @JasperLane 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@noaffiliation-x8w So a few things, I don't bring up the fact that a 14 year old can get married to defend the relationship we see in the video, more so as to point out that there are far more terrible things going on in my own country for me to personally be up in arms about this particular situation. No need to worry about the firepit being a bit to close to your house when your oven has already burst into flames, deal with the oven first then look into the precariously placed firepit.
      Second I am a firm believer of just because I don't like something does not mean that it should be illegal. Case and point I as a 27 year old man would probably only ever date at the youngest 24, that does not mean I think we should implement a law that you can only be in a relationship with someone who is within three years of your age.
      Or to get a bit more controversial I don't think it is healthy to consume porn, I think it does a lot of damage to a person and can have negative effects to a society though I hesitate to say that it should be illegal. Another example would be the prohibition in the US, drinking Alcohol in my eyes does very little in benefiting someone and more often than naught harms them even if through your entire life you drink responsibly. Yet when we outlawed Alcohol in the us it resulted in crime becoming far more rampant costing the lives of many and doing very little in stopping people from drinking. It why it only lasted 13 years
      So even though I might find it overall bad for someone who is 18 to get into a relationship with someone 24 years there senior, just as I think it would be a bad idea for someone who is 30 years old being in a relationship with someone who is 54. Though many will disagree with me, especially in regards to someone in there 30s dating someone much older. At the end of the day though I say lets focus on making it illegal to get married at all before your 18 before we start debating on if 18 itself is to young.
      You are correct though that just because a relationship has lasted 12 years does not mean it is happy, I just choose to air on the side of optamisim rather then thinking the worst out of people I have never met.

    My parents have a 13 year old age gap, when they met they were in very similar points in their lives, my mother is also an actress and director and my father is a writer and director, I never in my life thought of their age difference as an issue, they met when my mother was about 23 and my dad 36, my dad never directed her in anything at the beginning of their relationship, now he does do that sometimes, but back then my mother was in her own group and my dad in his.
    The idea of a 41 year old and an 18 year old together disgusts me, that’s something so different from my parents’ situation. He JUST finished high school, he was being directed BY her, and then he very quickly afterwards already gets married and had a child? You’re settling down at an age at which many others don’t even think about doing so, it’s so weird to me.

    I have only seen one of her films, Nowhere Boy, which from memory I thought to be rather good. I understand that you don’t really know anything about John Lennon, which is fair enough since he died 20 plus years before you were born, but presumably you have heard of the Beatles? And as a Beatles fan I have to tell you that the depiction of Lennon’s mum is pretty accurate, possibly with a garnishing of artistic licence. But he was raised by his aunt. His mum was more like a sister.
    I have no desire to see 50 shades. So I must defer to your expertise.
    As to the director’s relationship with her husband well, so what? Theirs is a relationship that has lasted. He was a consenting adult when they met and it is still going strong. Before she made that film she was a renowned artist. Her transition to film director has been pretty impressive. She’s not a great director but what she has done has been well received. And if she finds herself drawn to troubled relationships well she isn’t the first. Happy ever after doesn’t make for great drama.
    Maybe one day you’ll be a director yourself. Just don’t cast anyone you fancy in case you’re accused of hypocrisy.

    I think the main problem for me is that its a very shallow dissection of character, real or not. A person is so much more than just their romantic relationships. I find putting this much emphasis on an abusive relationship in their life is infantilizing in a fcuked up way. It reduces their character to a situation that many people would prefer not to define them.

    Sam Taylor Johnson is nowhere a saint, but as far as i understood from this video, all hatred towards her comes from her relationships with her husband (i don't see any other claims, besides some weird movies but, to be honest, many male directors did much worse). i'm not defending her, but why Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't get this amount of hate as her for dating girls who are twice his age? At least she and Aaron are married, while DiCaprio's just endlessly changing girls. But with Leo we all just joke kindly and say “what can we do, that’s how he is' and continue to watch his movies. Nobody's dragging him through dirt, nobody's boycotting his movies, nobody's calling him 'the most hated actor' because of this. That's a little double-standart-y, no?
