You can get a hood sound insulation pad for all of $63 from Pelican Parts, and the right spray glue from Wurth for something north of $20. Makes a difference! And it's a pretty easy job.
Those w123 chassis cars with the OM116 motors are absolute TANKS. Oil changes, anf fuel filters will make them run for ever. The weak points are underbody rust and the vacuum systems that run the locks and fuel cutoff. That looks like a solid example
I was not 17 but 18 when I first drove my relative’s Mercedes W123 in winter time. I still remember when I did slip on black ice on the road and slide off to a frozen crop field like a rock. The star sign bent a bit on the nose, but not a scratch happened even after was pulled back to the road with a tractor. He never noticed that, so I kept the secret. I felt like a king on the road in those seats, while others drove Lada and Dacia cars around me in 1992 in Hungary 🇭🇺 I’m glad to see you enjoying it
I'd love to see a series where u guys road trip around in this and partner with other channels on their projects! Trade project for project, have someone help u guys with the seats and interior while you work on their cars! 😊
When I was 17 I had a 74 ' Camaro & a 76' Mustang Cobra , and a 72' F100 short bed with a 302 , 4 speed. Red ! Loved that truck. My dad bought me the Camaro when I turned 16 & I bought the Cobra 6 months later.... I bought the f100 from my dad when I was 15 . It was wrecked , so I bought a parts truck (71 f100) and changed the front clip... My dad fussed at me for having so many vehicles but by the time I was 18 I had added a few for parts & , one of my all time fav's , I bought a 77' Monza Spyder. Then a 73 Chevelle that Id love to have today.. Love the channel . Phil from Austin Tx.
100% with you on your choice That's an awesome engine, before you go upsetting the pump idle, pull it out and replace the drive collar they wear out and cause idle noise, otherwise you're in for some great memories 👍😉
That is literally the most reliable rig you own. Half dead, she still does car stuff. Clean the injectors before you you mess with throttle settings on your pump. Run some CRC or BG detergent cleaner and clean them. At idle, right now they are not spraying, they're streaming like a squirt gun or water hose. That's why she's "nailing", and then clears up. Stanadyne makes the best fuel additives for it. Other than that, get the AC working, rear shocks(!), new tires, and enjoy. The bones of this rig are known to live close to a million miles, in African Heat, Artic Cold. Epic car.
Great choice! Those older Mercedes are cool! My favorite thing about them is, despite their age, when you close a door on them it sounds like a bank vault! They were really well made! It will be awesome to watch future content on that car. Well done!
A friend of mine has on of these Mercedes wagons he uses as his daily driver. When he got it, it did not run, and he told me the fuel injection system used is essentially the same as Germany used on their WWII fighter planes. That was five years ago, and he still drives every day.
And I bet it's similar to the system they used on diesel trucks before those fighter planes! A chain driven injection pump is some simple stuff (in theory.. Mercedes did this with some gasoline injection cars in the 1950's, too.
THATS AN AWESOME RIDE!!! Drove a 300D for 5 years, commuter car. 300K, only repairs, motor mounts, and turbo bearings. Oil and fuel filers @ 3k, I still see it around town. 35 mpg, and that’s when diesel was cheap. Never should have sold that car. Well done.
Cars always look better in the rain! Wet rough paint still shines. I owned an 87 300D. Ran it to over 300,000 miles. The windshield had one wiper that covered the entire windshield.
I absolutely love this. Reminds me of my 1st car. 85 golf 1.6 NA diesel. About as fast as a farm tractor, but I had a blast in that thing. Its what I had when I met my now wife and we just celebrated 20 years married. No matter what you do with it, I know it will be cool.
Nice wagon, & A diesel to boot! Definitely one to enjoy... They make self adhesive & hot glue (iron on) wood veneer for all those wood accents. You can find any type of wood & stain/varnish it simply... I've done a bunch of dash, door etc in vehicles & boats, easy to work with, no too expensive & can really dress up a project. Glad y'all are doing well, enjoy your summer, & all the fun, lol!! Thanx !
That young man might be running for president one day... Hard work and opportunity always brings good luck! I went that far to get a brand new camper deal, but not sure I would my my umpteenth project vehicle... 😀
Love love love, literally cant wait to see more content on this one! I wouldnt leave it quite so rough, i’d redo the interior (within a certain budget) - because road trips you’re spending alot of time in there, an outside “glow up” and mechanical maintenance of course
I bought one of these a few years back same Color . Few into Arizona and drove it home to Nova Scotia.3400 miles home with only minor mechanical issues easily fixed with a pair of five grips
Another road trip idea -- Yellowstone National Park! Have you been there?! I was tent camping in a campground there about three winters ago, somebody else had a W123 turbodiesel wagon, a photo buff, I suspect he was. He was up before the crack of dawn and I knew the sound of that motor when he went off before sunrise for his day's adventure.
I love your idea of a road trip from swimming at the seashore to snowboarding in the mountains! Winter arrives all too soon, so it's a great incentive to get 'Buster the Benz' ready for the adventure. The prep work will make a great series and be an inspiration to all those young men/women to whom you recommended a car like Buster to be their first wrenching project. I have a '74 240D manual sedan that I need to get back on the road, so I, for one, will be glad to see you two discover Buster's needs and watch you do your mechanical magic!
If only diesel were half the price of gas like the good old days! A while ago I had a friend with a birthday in February. At Mountain High in Southern California you can ski free on your birthday. We would ski in the morning, stop buy home, swap for our surf gear and go surfing north of Ventura in the afternoon. He called it his biathlon of fun. With that roof rack you're set for strapping boards on top! I have a 66 SS Chevelle and back in the 60's I dreamed of finding a 66 Malibu wagon (of course no extra money then) so either that or now maybe a 47 Chevy sedan delivery swapped onto an S10 Blazer chassis. Panel trucks were popular for surf wagons then too. We would borrow my family's 55 Buick wagon for beach trips back then. Have great fun with the project!
Not too far from east texas, drive the Natchez Trace Parkway. It begins in Natchez MS and ends in Nashville TN. I live in Texas but have driven a section of it, absolutely beautiful.
Our family largely doesn't sell our cars, we shuffle them around. My first car, in 1991 when I was 19, was a used 1982 Saab 900 I got from my mother after she got herself a '91.5 9000S,. After I cracked the block of that 82 in 1996 I replaced it with an used '89 900 i bought myself and my father got himself a used '90 900S from the same dealer a year after. In 2002 my mother upgraded herself to a 9-3S and my dad got her 9000S and I got his 900S. Then in 2007 I got the 9000S after my mom got a 9-5 Aero and my dad got the 9-3S. Around 2012 I got the 9-3S (which was a 5 speed) and my dad got a used 2002 9-3 SE (which has a bigger turbo among other things) in an automatic as he was tired of doing stick shift (the 9-5 is also an auto). A deer wrote off the 9-3S in 2014 and I replaced it with another 2002 9-3 Manual which I'm still keeping going. IF I had to do it all over again, I'd still have gone with Saabs (though I might go easier on the clutch of the first one and the transmission of the third one)... they're not anymore expensive to fix than BMW, or Audi, or hell even VW, and while they're not "fast" cars typically for their class, they're the most overbuilt tanks when it comes to structural reinforcement that I basically don't worry about a collision with anything. I've seen crash photos of them being rear ended on icy/snow covered highwayst by loaded 18 wheelers and the truck is the thing that bent the most in the process. You can take the front coupling knuckle from TWO locomotives doing about 35mph to the drivers door and it barely phases the car. Pushes it down the tracks a quarter mile or so and the about worst you're going to suffer is a broken left leg if you're the driver (everyone else will be able to open their doors and get out). Roll overs are pretty much a non-issue as they have better roof structures than anything without an NHRA certified cage like Finnegan has in Blasphemi, and they're designed to take 1100 pounds of moose or elk to the windshield without the animal getting inside the cabin. th-cam.com/video/9IPrXAJ2Vj0/w-d-xo.html
Hey guys, like you I love to see young car people and support them as they try to prosper and grow a business on their own. While I can’t exactly have him detail my cars up in Michigan I was glad to be his 50th follower on Instagram. It will be fun to see him grow in the car world. Very cool that you guys gave him some exposure on your channel in addition to buying the car.
Those go for 10 - 13k, in good condition and with vintage registration here in Germany. What a gem.❤❤❤ I can’t wait seeing it getting restored. Without rust, those old mercedes cars can run forever. Well sought after. There still kids and teenagers growing up in a good. Sometimes they’re just hard to find, because they’re occupied with doing their thing.
THIS IS FANTASTIC!!! I had a VW Jetta 1.6 L 56 HP! the car literally ran until the body rusted off. in fact my wife ran it out of oil until it shut off, we just filled back up and away we went for another 40k miles. Also we got around 50MPG. Only draw back which my wife noticed from your video sounds like golf balls pinging under the hood
There was a reason y'all came across my feed! I have an '85 Benz diesel wagon (same color!) I bought for $800 bucks and it was a "pile", too!🤣 It gave me an entire decade of trouble-free service, including, two cross country trips! It's the Euro version. Planning to convert it to electric to preserve it. It just became too unsafe to operate and I had to let 'er sit. She has vacuum issues, brake master cylinder issues and leaks like a sieve through the moonroof.
My man is 17, has a Tesla set up to detail out of…..working smarter and a lot less concerns of maintenance on a Tesla vs a the old diesel. Got to give the fella props, he is in a much better place than i was at 17. I love the OM606s they are near bulletproof and make awesome power
When I saw the videos of Emily pulling you out on instagram I messaged, Seriously though, get in touch with anything you need to know, I've made vacuum diagrams that are color coded, I've got videos on the AC, Glow system, transmission, and tons more stuff still in the works between editing and uploading between work and everything else. Your rough idle could be the rack damper, they were upgraded to a newer gold colored bolt. The EGR vacuum lines appear disconnected, which could be your vacuum leak that is causing poor shutdown. A new set of nozzles and balance the injector pop pressure does wonders to smooth out a 617 as well, I'd recommend moving to the 314 nozzles, they give you a little more bottom end grunt. I've been driving diesel Mercedes for over 15 years now, getting pretty close to 20 years, and I'm younger than you... You can 4 speed swap them, I've got one that I did that to. Also if road trips are your goal, you can get a diff from an 85 that has the 2.88 ratio for better cruise rpm and economy, I'd do the 314 nozzles to compensate for the taller gearing for sure then though. If you guys want, I've got all kinds of special tools, pop tester, shims, parts and probably about one of everything else too, let me know, bring it up for a trip to a TN lake, or I can road trip my 300D down loaded with stuff.
When I was 17/18 (1969) my dad bought me a 1958 Chevrolet Impala convertible to drive to auto mechanics class, held in an old dealership, on one side if town and then to the rest if the school day at the the high school on the other side of town. He bought it and never put another penny into it because I asked him not to. I was working 2 jobs besides school so the car was my responsibility! Insurance maintenance the whole bit was my responsibility. I LOVED that car. So if I were to go back and be able to do it again, yeah, ‘58 Chevy Impala convertible!! Good luck with Buster Benz and have fun!!!
4 inch Suspension lift, wheels and M&S tires add a rear locker and a roof rack. Popup camper road trip to Baja 1000. Thanks for sharing y'all's adventures.
I can see Buster driving down the road on vacation, checking out the lower 48, accumulating stickers on the side windows on the rear identifying all the states you've been to, cheesy photographs, the whole thing. 😊
I looked some up on line, and here in Denver metro they're going for $9k. you did good. I had a late 70's Audi diesel that was awesome except for the timing belt.
If it was a stick, I’d have to make you an offer❤❤... nice score... the Kid is sprouting nicely... I await to see the detailing video... touche’... the ac rarely works to Americans’ standards😂😂😂They are designed for German winters
I owned an ‘84 which I bought in 88, we called it the fridge as the colour was very appliance like. The car was great and like always, you miss it when it’s gone.
As soon as I saw that yellow station wagon it took me back to the early 80s and a TV show called Hart to Hart. First time I ever saw a Mercedes station wagon.
Actually I agree that was a smart buy agree with Aaron's points. I have eyed a dead VW Rabbit pickup possibly diesel down the street between Alma and Ennis... Maybe a dirt cheap rescue flip?
I had a 240D salon from 1976 as my 2nd ever car went all over Europe and the UK in it. The thing is still running and has been restored by the son of the guy I sold it too, still on its original engine and transmission and is halfway on to its 2nd million miles. Aaron why not do a east coast beach then go straight to the Rockies and ski there.
I think I would just find some new seats and replace and just clean it up like your boy at VGG. Love the the small camper idea, look at the newer A frame pop ups, really cool. Plenty of room in Buster for all the grear, look at some of the new inflatable kayaks for using while camping at the lake,
Cool project. As a 17 year old, I would have had a good sound system, and overall vehicle looks/stance as my two highest priorities LOL. But as an adult safe and reliable would have to be top of the list so you can take those long road trips. If there is any budget left after that I would clean up the interior areas you showed in the video (seats, wood, switches) and add conveniences such as your pop up tent idea, satellite radio/nav, LED lighting etc. etc. (And, you gotta replace the iconic hood ornament everyone likes to steal......)
Love it! We had an old 300D in the family for a little while. Wish we could have kept it a bit longer. I tried tinkering with it once but with not much success. Definitely can’t wait to see what you do with this one!
I really enjoy your page. The pair of you are so adorable and a fun couple! At the end you asked what I would do with enough money and imagination to the Benz. In my seventy years that project would probably start with a nice welded hitch big enough to pull a twenty or so foot long travel trailer. The trailer should have a rear bumper that can carry the Honda motorcycle too. All my cars in the past were either triumph's, MG's, Volkswagen beetles or buses with a couple of muscle cars thrown in along with many motorcycles. I now have a '97 Nissan pickup on it's second engine that I refuse to sell. At one time I had a 1958 Porsche as an everyday driver. Boy I miss that one. If nothing else have fun!
I also like wagons had a lot of them when I was young. In the 70s a guy could buy a nice wagon for a few hundred dollars. I traveled a lot so I had my home on wheels. Can't wait to see more of this project. Thanks for sharing 😊.
worked for MB for many years as you guys rattle off problems i keep remembering part numbers cant loves wait to see this journey. crazy my daughter loves the 123 chassis
I always wanted the mid 80s Impala station wagon. I wanted to get one and make it look like an Impala SS. Of course it would still be on Steelies but a little wider and maybe supercharged. I think I saw one on Sick week this year, that one was sweet.
A W123 300TD :-) Amaaazing cars and those OM series diesels are great, I have a W123 Sedan (280 K jet) and a bunch of W116's and imo they are the zenith of Mercedes Benz design and production so im super thrilled to see you guys have one on the channel :-) Needs more Turbo............
This reminds me of my aunt who had 70s wagon I think it was a GM all I remember it had the rear facing seat in the back and it road really smooth great video keep up the good work God bless from GA and stay safe
I bought a diesel wagon from a Mercedes Benz dealership in Alton Illinois. It was thier parts car. 350+ thousand miles when the speedometer quit working. Drove it years after that. And sold it for more than I paid for it
Super Happy to see you two. Missed the videos. Believe it or not, I think it would get very expensive to restore. So lift it some, put bigger tires on it and turn it into a pre-runner for the desert and mountains.
Loved the video !!! Aaron I still have my dream car from when I was 17 it's a 1972 AMC javelin I'm working on it now and hopefully be able to do power tour next year ,fingers crossed
I loved mine!! Screw that exhaust valve closed on the turbo exhaust and it'll bark second gear. It's surprising what that engine can do! EDIT: The vacuum system is everything in that vehicle...also the AC board usually needs to be resoldered...
Check the engine mounts, valve adjustment and the injector opening pressure for the low/rough idle. Looks like a couple rubber mounts fit the air cleaner are bad and it’s the middle button for the A/C.
At 17 I bought a 1972 Pontiac Lemans Sport for $500.00 and I wish I had it today. Now your Benz is really cool. There are so many things you can do with her and I'm excited to see what you do.
back in 1971 I took my test to get my license in a 1966 VW. I was the coolest kid around for I had a crank out sunroof. On my car it had to actually turn in circles to get it to open. I like to see a pop up tent on the roof than you wouldn't be able to use the sunroof. Go with the T drop trailer
I'm in Australia, and I have had three W123's , one being a diesel, non- turbo with 480,000 kilometres on it. That is the first one I have seen with interior in that condition. Usually, they hold up very well. I currently have a W124 300E with 376,00 km. I love Mercedes. Mine is Marymercedes 😆
I have a close friend who owns the identical Mercedes station wagon. She and her husband are vintage car collectors but their daily drivers are both vintage Mercedes.
Cool Car. I bought my daughter a 1982 Volvo Diesel 4 door as her first car which was handed down to my son then to my youngest daughter. No hot rodding around for these kids. My eldest did get pulled over for speeding up hill, the judge threw it out and said it had to a mistake because he had the same car and no way. Oh and my daughter named it "Vapor" it was light blue and of course a little smoky.
I absolutely bloody adore these cars and would bite your arm off for this one (if I was in the states). I had the saloon with the petrol engine for a few years and it never let me down and it is my biggest car regret that I sold it. Small tip at the front corners of the sunroof opening are 2 drain holes that lead down and out behind, under, the top of the wings to I think the same spot that the hood hinges hide in with lots of leaves usually sat in there, if memory serves. I found a bit of extension lead cord flex was exactly the right size to slide down these 2 channels to clear them out without any real effort at all. Just a fantastic car for making your day feel that much better when you travel in them.
That German sled is a really good survivor. I'd just do the necessary maintenance, put a little lipstick on it to pretty it up a little, and drive it anywhere you want to go. Would be a great Power Tour candidate.
Awesome video. Hey Aaron, a lot of folks probably thought you were blowing smoke when you said you would have wanted this kind of station wagon at 17. When I turned 16 and got my license, my cousin had a '61 Mercury wagon that had been sitting for two years and told me I could have it. Dad said no (go figure). I wanted that wagon in the worst kind of way. Right on brother!!
If I was 18 again and buying a car like you said, I’d probably get a little pickup truck or wagon and road trip it across the parks system, stopping to work if I needed to pay for the next leg. Had a lot of fun in a Volvo 240 wagon, love this Benz idea.
My dad had a 1995 280E ten years later. I really enjoyed driving it. It was bulletproof except for the fuel injection. He had to sell it when parts became scarce.
May the Benz be remembered forever. I enjoyed him, now I get to see buster on TH-cam every now and then. Have fun with buster! 😁
Sure appreciate it, bud!!! So awesome meeting you!
Keep up the grind young man. I have a feeling that you will be a successful man in life!
@@flyingsparksgarage needs rear shocks doing hooocie choocie like CHARO

You just can’t go wrong with a Diesel Benz! I have had 3 of them and I loved all them! Good luck!
I would take it to Colorado. Estes Park, Big T Canyon.......drive it up Pikes Peak!!!!

What a gem.❤❤❤
I can’t wait seeing it getting restored.
Without rust, those old mercedes cars can run forever.
Well sought after.
There still kids and teenagers growing up in a good. Sometimes they’re just hard to find, because they’re occupied with doing their thing.
Very cool diesel wagon! Do some videos on it.
Hope that C6 Vette is driving and shifting nicely now! Keep up the great work, you two!
We had one of these for about 3 years and it was and always has been the one car my wife always says she misses.
Already making the money back from all the mileage 😂
We’re proud of him too!!!! Freakin LOVE IT!
Lovely old Merc! Give it love! These are very special old things. Good show guys.
Oh man! Great memories owned one and used it as a camper/surf wagon up and down the coast of Baja. Enjoy the ride.
Good luck with Buster Benz and have fun!!!
w123 300td was back than in the early 90ies my dream car, but just to expensive for a student. nice to see one to be rescued. awesome
I had one with 350000 miles and sold it running, cold ac, pulled a trailer from CO to FL. Great vehicle
That is the best car ever!! She is amazing and will out perform anything else you own. I’m so jealous
4 inch Suspension lift, wheels and M&S tires add a rear locker and a roof rack. Popup camper road trip to Baja 1000.
Thanks for sharing y'all's adventures.
Cool project wagon. Can’t wait to hear what you name it. 😊 got have a propolator 2000 with any project with a hatch.
I can see Buster driving down the road on vacation, checking out the lower 48, accumulating stickers on the side windows on the rear identifying all the states you've been to, cheesy photographs, the whole thing. 😊
ooh yeah .. those rear side windows are crying out for State / town / tourist places stickers
That truly is the perfect road trip car you can put all-terrain tires on it and they do pretty good in the dirt
Actually I agree that was a smart buy agree with Aaron's points. I have eyed a dead VW Rabbit pickup possibly diesel down the street between Alma and Ennis... Maybe a dirt cheap rescue flip?
I think it's time to start looking for a car for "the kid"! That's a build I'd love to see!
My dad had an old 240d, I think it was a 1982. That was the car I learned to drive in. Will be very fun to see future videos featuring this one.
Benz diesels are immortal. This wagon will see many happy adventures with you guys.
Oh man my dad use to have an Benz back in the mid 70's. Such a cool ride. Awesome video!
I also like wagons had a lot of them when I was young. In the 70s a guy could buy a nice wagon for a few hundred dollars. I traveled a lot so I had my home on wheels. Can't wait to see more of this project. Thanks for sharing 😊.
🎵 I can’t get no satisfaction & my Buster can’t get no traction 🎵 Awesome find can’t wait for more vids on it the Vette!
worked for MB for many years as you guys rattle off problems i keep remembering part numbers cant loves wait to see this journey. crazy my daughter loves the 123 chassis
Amazing find. 11 years unregistered. Love it
I always wanted the mid 80s Impala station wagon. I wanted to get one and make it look like an Impala SS. Of course it would still be on Steelies but a little wider and maybe supercharged. I think I saw one on Sick week this year, that one was sweet.
A W123 300TD :-)
Amaaazing cars and those OM series diesels are great, I have a W123 Sedan (280 K jet) and a bunch of W116's and imo they are the zenith of Mercedes Benz design and production so im super thrilled to see you guys have one on the channel :-)
Needs more Turbo............
This reminds me of my aunt who had 70s wagon I think it was a GM all I remember it had the rear facing seat in the back and it road really smooth great video keep up the good work God bless from GA and stay safe
I am still laughing about the nutcracker Aaron and Em! Too funny!
I bought a diesel wagon from a Mercedes Benz dealership in Alton Illinois. It was thier parts car.
350+ thousand miles when the speedometer quit working. Drove it years after that. And sold it for more than I paid for it
Great cars.
I had a 67 190D, 4 cylinder diesel, 4 speed automatic. Ran great and actually fuel efficient
Good to see your smiling face back in whatever you’re doing. I enjoy watching you guys just kind of relaxing for me.
fun loving couple
Super Happy to see you two. Missed the videos. Believe it or not, I think it would get very expensive to restore. So lift it some, put bigger tires on it and turn it into a pre-runner for the desert and mountains.
one word used parts
Loved the video !!! Aaron I still have my dream car from when I was 17 it's a 1972 AMC javelin I'm working on it now and hopefully be able to do power tour next year ,fingers crossed
Dude, if I had that car at 17, it would have a stereo system and surf boards as I was always at the beach. It would also probably be lowered some.
Road trip idea! Big Bend National Park, not too many hours away from you in SW TX, then take the rowboat to Boquillas, Mexico.
I loved mine!! Screw that exhaust valve closed on the turbo exhaust and it'll bark second gear. It's surprising what that engine can do!
EDIT: The vacuum system is everything in that vehicle...also the AC board usually needs to be resoldered...
Your excitement over this wagon is contagious , really like your channel. Let us know when you decide to drop a B series Cummins in it🤨
Check the engine mounts, valve adjustment and the injector opening pressure for the low/rough idle. Looks like a couple rubber mounts fit the air cleaner are bad and it’s the middle button for the A/C.
Nutcracker, that's why I had it flipped over. 🤣🤣🤣
FSG, Great deal on a reliable car! I'd just clean it up and drive. Tear drop also sounds good!
Good to see you adding to the stable
BUSTER needs rear shocks too. seen it bouncing down the Highway @19:16
The rear suspension is probably spheres, which last a long time - but when they go bad, they get very harsh! Probably what you saw.
That German sled is a really good survivor. I'd just do the necessary maintenance, put a little lipstick on it to pretty it up a little, and drive it anywhere you want to go. Would be a great Power Tour candidate.
Buster is a great name for the Merc. Love it.
Great episode, i would travel route 66. have a blessed week!
That Benz needs shocks so bad! Still a classy and comfy ride.please take care of it. We love the content.
