Border View Farms is a mid sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. We raise corn, soybeans, and wheat on a little over 3,000 acres.
My name is Nathan. I run this channel and farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. I get questions about how and why we do things on the farm frequently, even from my own family members, so to help explain things it's easier to just show you. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture in general as well as dispel some of the common misconceptions.
I hope you enjoy my content and please ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can.

A lot of folks say the wheat chaff is more valuable spread in the field as organic matter than it is to sell off as bales. Ever thought about leaving it spread in a field to see if the double crop beans or next year's corn do any better in it?

It's good that you are bringing on new stars. Actually, I think we all appreciate your dad's measured comments. Finally, don't let the fertilizer folks off the hook. With what this input is costing, they need to be more, not less accurate on application.

I guess you've gotten the 'right to repair' stuff sorted out that I've been hearing about over the past two years. Tho, as your kid 'owns' the license to operate this particular vehicle, I guess any later issues lie with them eh.! Just... How do you delete the codes on that model.? I can't find the plug for the ECU on mine. It doesn't even have a cigarette lighter socket on mine.!

The day off is alright...the dedication you show to share your life in farming is unbelievable and commendable...I also repaired toy gators years ago from motors to gearboxes to new tires I understand 🤣keep em coming Nathan doing good 👍glad your dad is warming up to the camera 👌🏻
You need to present your data and drone shot to your fertilizer supplier. If they are reputable they will make up for their mistake without you asking.

Great to see one of the boys with you and wanting to learn about how to run the combine or was it just 50 questions. His shirt says it all.

We had a co op that messed up repeatedly over the years to the point that we bought our own spreader and sprayer. Being that you guys aren't that far away from us it probably is the same company but I wont mention any names . It's ok to be flustered by the situation but you also can't let it continue to happen. We finished wheat and double crops earlier this week. We had great yields and decent weather for harvest . I'm looking forward to seeing a new combine on your farm hopefully before fall harvest. Get a low expanding can of spray foam and fill the wheel.
Too much pressure and the foam will blow out the wheel.
And some duc tape
Or wrap with some old canvas belt

Amen on the organic!! There is 260 of organic by me, last year on 120 you couldn't see the beans! Insurance paid them they never cut them never made pods was pathetic, they put it in wheat after I planted beans by it for a neighbor you couldn't see the wheat for the clover they seeded into the wheat in March, they cut it last week 120 acres thry hauled off one semi load but you know it's organic I got 18.00 dollars a bushel for it not sure on price but that's his bragging piece! 2 good farms being destroyed near me with organic sad to see growing a weedy mess, insurance guy said you need a cultivator guy laughed Said im not doing that and it shows. Planted beans 2.5 weeks ago 30 inch rows other day you could barley see the beans for all the grass so sad

I'm always willing to pay more for organic (SF Bay area). And just a heads up: I watch every one of your videos as part of my morning routine, but any time you remind of Z. Johnson, I shake my head and question what I'm doing while slowly downing another big scoop of organic oatmeal. The 'yeah are you OK' stuff is really weak. Keep up the good work.
I'm glad you have the opportunity to choose to pay a premium for organic. There is room for both production methods.
@@BorderViewFarms That's my outlook, we need both. Eventually as better farming practices are implemented, the organic label will fade away. You'll see a measurable increase in public health when that happens. The thing about organic, is a lot of farms and commodity purchasing agents are only worried about checking off all the boxes, and they are raising an inferior product. But it's organic.
I'm not going to lie, I was in the right place at the right time when organic really started to take off. I was accidently organic, I was small and I wanted to see what I could do without writing other people checks. I've gotten kind of good at it over the years and grew quite a bit.
Why more people don't jump on at least the cover crop aspect when farming, I'll never understand. I grow cover crop seed in small fields that are hard to get to and not suitable for cash crop production and too hard to get equipment in to, sell it to the government, and then it gets given back to me FOR FREE!
It’s going to take 20 ac to make 102 bushel here. Our wheat looks like chicken feed. But they will make us harvest it. Waste of fuel. Still no rain. Great video Nathan. 👍

@@rickpederson1219 North Eastern ND. Wheat was appraised at 3 bushel acre. Barley chicken feed. Corn looks like blue onions. Not a good year. This is worse then 1988.
I really enjoyed this! I am going to source organic wheat for my home mill, simply because I don’t want to eat wheat sprayed with Roundup just prior to harvest! I have no trouble with it used as a herbicide, just don’t want it in my flour. What say you?
I can't speak for everywhere but I have never used or even seen Roundup sprayed on wheat before harvest. It is not a practice used around here and not something I would be concerned about.
@@BorderViewFarms it’s good to here not everyone is doing it! I would feel totally comfortable using your wheat, the trouble is one can’t tell with commercial flour. I have found a little miller here in Ontario who carries a nice variety of local wheat berries that I know won’t put roundup in my flour.
Possibly drilling a few holes and putting some new plastic on those wheels and holding it with zip ties maybe could get some more life outta them.

We’ve been real wet and wild here in Michigan, “April Showers” moved to June and July this year 🙄
That's what we got a bit to much in Germany lately .. Crops still out, hopefully we can start in 10-14 days, but this harvest season will be a mess🙄 but yield should be amazing!
I definitely would talk the company that spread fertilizer. Tell them in the future that is not acceptable the job they did. Just be calm and don't get mad.

Never grow organic @22:00. Eating organic is to world hunger what driving a Humvee is to climate change, yet so many climate change enthusiast seem to also be organic enthusiast. Never understood that. Glad you had a good wheat crop. We plant soybeans and pattern tile right through them here in MN btw.

Question - would you put fungicide on enlist beans? What yeild difference have you seen?
Without question we will spray almost acre of beans with fungicide. I thinks it's 5 bu. for us and with good crop prices and a good looking crop its a no brainer.

Did the combine grid the wet wheat like it would wet corn?
No the corn grinds as it's coming off the cob. Wheat is easier the thrash in that sense and doesn't grind much in the combine.
How much phos per acre do you apply?? How much phos is in soil tests ??
That field got (or was supposed to) 140#s of MAP last fall. I'd have to look up soil test but my guess is P2O5 levels were around 15-25 ppm before the application.
@@BorderViewFarms About the P level, are you talking about P2O5 Olsen? In France, research show a 30 bu/ac wheat yield response in such P2O5 levels. You could be a little more efficient by bringing P right to the seed, in the root zone with you drill (need a double hopper)

You are not too concerned about the small loss of income from the fertilizer dealers application mistake, but you want to charge the hired hand for the repair of the hay wagon? In my opinion, the hired hand appears to be a good worker and someone you need to keep. Let him use the hay wagon for free. Keep up the good work with farming and YouTubing.
Seriously it was a joke. I'm not charging him to repair or use the wagon. It's been sitting in the barn for 30 years, we went and got it for him and dad is even fixing it up so it doesn't break while he's using it. Don't worry we are plenty fair to him.

Are you aware that anything that comes from something that was living is considered "organic" by definition.?? I'm puzzled when I hear people especially farmers say that. By definition every crop you grow is organic.
I am aware of the technical definition of organic. For the purposes of this discussion organic is a production method which excludes some fertilizers and pesticides.
