Excellence EL Carmen IS NOT the best hotel in Punta Cana - not even close!
When it comes to Punta Cana all-inclusive resorts, Excellence El Carmen is the gold standard for many people. After staying at Excellence Punta Cana last year and subsequently ranking it my #1 best overall hotel in Punta Cana, and then just recently enjoying a wonderful stay at the next door Finest Punta Cana, I was elated to finally stay at Excellence El Carmen and experience the magnificent moments everybody raves about.
Excellence El Carmen in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, is great. Actually, it is an excellent hotel. But, it is not the top hotel in Punta Cana - not even top 5. I think you summed this one up perfectly. I totally agree with your sentiments after experiencing this resort first-hand. Unfortunately I went during slow season so there wasn't much of a vibe but on the flip side one thing I appreciated was the excellence team. The food here was a toss-up with Mirage as far as best food goes during my trips to the DR. (Give Mirage a slight 1up for the restaurant decor and ambiance) .. thinking about Secrets Cap Cana for the Honeymoon as I hear it is truly one of the best in DR (and possibly all the Caribbean). It is one area of DR I have never been (as well as Miches) so I am totally looking forward to your cap cana guantlet. Appreciate these awesome reviews!! They provide a totally different and well encompassed style then the average "My day at..."
Yes, I personally think Secrets Cap Cana, but in the Caribbean, no way, if you've been to Antigua or St Lucia, you understand why I'm saying this, but we all have our own preference.

Great review, though I disagree with the title! We had a great time at this resort, we actually stayed in this exact room you showed here. The things you felt negative about we didn't have the same experience. As far as the pool, we enjoyed the main pool. It never occurred to us that the swim-up bar was in the shade, I think it was probably a nice break from the sun when we'd go grab a drink. Martirez at the pool bar knew my name and had my off-menu drink order memorized and would always make one for himself at the same time. Bingo at the main pool is a must, don't miss it. There are also 2 other pools in another part of the resort, they are much quieter. You have to take a walk to get there but there are gardens and ponds and flamingos along the way. There's also the Aire bar between those two pools. Most rooms also have their own pool. So we had many different pool options, mixed it up all week, and never felt bored. The service was excellent. We made friends with lots of the staff and by the end of the week were on first name basis with a lot of them. Our room (same exact room as this video) was amazing, spacious, the AC worked fine, and the pool/deck were incredible. They switched the liquor in our room out for our request (top shelf Imperial rum). They cleaned the room twice a day, and each day the bed was decorated in a different creative romantic way, the room smelled like perfume. They turned the bed down at night while you're away at dinner. They kept the mini bar stocked with everything you could ask for and replaced my rum bottles.
We aren't really night life people, but we did enjoy the activities they had after dinner - Silent disco was so fun. If you're looking to just relax and enjoy the food, drinks, views, and scenery I think this is a perfect place. This review didn't mention the spa, which was incredible. If you're thinking about coming here, look up reviews of the spa and the hydro treatment they do.
All in all, we will be back here for sure. You can walk to Excellence PC down the beach, which is a beautiful walk and worth the trip, and you can experience their pools and bars also. We did that one day and found that we made the right decision by staying at El Carmen.

Can you recall what the top shelf spirits were available at the bars?
I was there March of 22 perfect weather and our service was great that actually catered to us, they work hard so tip. There is a second pool by the pool bar and lets not forget the pool in the back that nobody really knows because they don't walk the resort. I am Italian and love food so food was good in all restaurants we ate, we didn't do the Indian or Spanish but remember your comment in the video regarding the Spanish place was plates were small even though I didn't eat the that is a small plate restaurant. Weather in the summer does tend to be hit or miss so trying Winter or Spring next time. We had a swim out room and not excellence club either our room was cleaned everyday and plenty of fresh towels. We stayed for 10 days and looking forward to another 10 this March as well. We are in our early 50's so yes I would say that is about the age there but there were also some younger people as well. I have also stayed at many Secrets properties which we love as well.

I’ve been there. I had a 2 story plunge pool and it was great!! If you walk to the beach and look to your right there is a gift shop that does massages on the beach. $30 for 1 hour.
I am disappointed that you lightly touched on the swimout pool in your room. My wife and I had that same room, and a server stayed coming by supplying drinks. And we ordered room service and got to know our neighbors. I don't think we even went to the main pool in our five days there
Stayed here for a week on the Excellence Club 2 story. It is definitely worth the hype. I'm pretty sure you missed the other pool. The whole week was a mixed lively crowd. The customer service was top notch, and the food was consistently good. I've been to my share of resorts at this price point and nothing has compared. This resort made me go to 3 more Excellence resorts. I've booked here again next year.

I've been to Excellence Punta Cana and El Carmen. My experience at ECC was a 10 compared to 8 at PC. Everything was just on another level at ECC.
I would like to see you rank the resorts from this trip. Your favorite to least favorite. We have tried all of them and Finest adult was our favorite. Going back in 4 weeks. One thing we really like about the beach is there is no motorized water activities.

Woo! Can't wait to see your videos on the Cap Cana Resorts! Hopefully the weather is better for you there. We loved our 8 nights at Secrets Cap Cana. It was a tough decision to make as we don't get to travel that often. So I can't rank or compare it to others, but the Facebook Groups I've been a part of rank it pretty high, even among other Secrets properties. The service and value are impeccable. You can literally lay by the pool or on the beach all day and have drinks and food brought to you.
It's definitely a more laid back resort compared to other places. After our 7th night there in a Pool view Non Preferred room, our flight out of PC got cancelled, so by chance, we ended up back at Secrets Cap Cana and because we had just left there, they put us in a Preferred Swim out room in building 6. The size of the room is just right, and the double rain head shower is perfect for couples. The atmosphere and layout of the resort is perfect, imo. It didn't feel like a typical modern high rise hotel. I know the Hyatt Zilara and Ziva next door are very popular right now, but we weren't looking for a high energy party resort. We did get to see Sanctuary on the way back from one of our excursions. One of the couples that was staying there were a little envious that we were at Secrets, even though they loved Sanctuary. I researched Sanctuary and wasn't all that impressed by the value of the lower tiered rooms. When we go back to Secrets, it will definitely be in a Swim out room. Being able to swim any time of the day you want without worrying about the sun or being in the shade is amazing.

Hey James! Just wanted to say thanks. I am an avid watcher of your videos and all-inclusive enthusiast. Last year me and my fiancé went to Secrets Royal Beach on your recommendation - it was outstanding. In a few weeks we leave for Lopesan (also on your recommendation) . I appreciate what you do - you’re the man!
How was the air conditioning in different areas of Lopesn? We like it overall, but keep seeing comments on this.

There are two pools at the back of the resort with a bar between them. Its a lovely spot. El Carmen is 7 years old now versus 2 for LA and 1 for Finest. It is currently undergoing renovations - the decks, including the X lounge are having tiles to replace the wooden slats and it makes a difference.
Where is the excellence club pool? Or an actual secondary main pool? You know, like at Finest, or Excellence Punta Cana?
If they want to stay relevant at the apex of PC resorts, I'd recommend focusing on more than replacing tiles and slats. The rooms need an overhaul and the lobby, though still lovely, shows its age.
Live Aqua is much classier and polished.

How can an average traveler find it if James, a very experienced Traveler not locate it. This should NEVER have happened. we may he going back to the service aspect of this property
@@juliek266there’s no reason that anyone should not be able to find anything at this resort. El Carmen is small and has a simple layout. If you can’t find something at this resort you are really lazy or not very smart. You can literally walk from one end of the resort to the other in less than 10 minutes. There’s also an app that you download when you arrive. It has everything you need, map, schedule of all activities, lists of all restaurants that are open including their menus. Even if you didn’t know about the app, the resort is a very basic layout, the buffet is right next to the 6 other restaurants, which is right next to the coffee shop, which right next to the sports bar and main lobby/main bar, which is right next to the pavilion that hosts the nightly entertainment. Everything else is more or less located by the main pool and beach. there’s no way you are getting lost or shouldn’t be able to find anything. The second smaller pool is in the back of the resort.
@juliek266 if you are talking about the back pools either a simple stroll past the flamingo lake takes you to the area. Or you could look on the resort map. It's called walking and exploring the property. It's not big.
The thing about reviews I have found over my many years of traveling is every stay is “personal” In nature.
Some people are easygoing (my wife andi are but this doesn’t mean we don’t expect top level service etc)and others are not.
To each their own
Some people will let one small thing sour their whole vacation and thus give bad reviews.
It’s funny that you’re saying that this resort is a lot of older people I’m in my 50s and a lot of the videos I’ve seen on this are the exact opposite of what you’re saying that it’s more of a younger she crowd and excellence. Punta Cana is an older crowd so again it depends on who’s eyes are looking at the review through .

I agree with your review. A very good hotel. But it’s not 5 star. Service was average to good (finest better), we had the rooftop honeymoon suite - and I always have a temperature reader and yep, was 78-79 degrees. Had them service it 4 times and they did offer to move rooms, but I know there are numerous other comments saying the same. Food was pretty good, other than sand being in one of the scallop dishes at magna being a let down.
Would I return, maybe not, because finest is just better all round with the adult club section. But all in, it’s still incredible value for a beautiful resort. If they just sorted out out aircon, service a little better (like also perhaps responding after 4 attempts on their excellence loyalty scheme - I still haven’t received the code after 3 visits / phone call x 2 and 4 emails and a tripadvisor review, so I’m now giving up as the scheme literally gives you not much more) , then I would return. But there is a better option with finest next door.
I agree about the pools! I think they should have way more and it is a bummer that they market the property as 20+ pools because of all the swim ups. There are two more small actual pools though WAY in the back of the resort and a bar right by them as well! They are very secluded and private and tranquil and have beautiful lush tropical plants by them!!! We loved utilizing those on our trip there! Most times we were back there by ourselves!

The last couple properties you rated a soft/weak/flimsy 5, why not just rate them a 4.5 to distinguish from the other solid/emphatic 5's? Also are you able to share a spreadsheet where you track all of the hotels you've stayed at and their ratings?

I like good food, craft cocktails, option for partying and need areas for quiet time. Looking on east side of Mexico or DM, what would be your go to?
The food and property looked great but for myself, I put a lot of emphasis on the beach, so I would not stay at any hotel in the Uvero Alto region.
I can empathize with that. If you've been to Bavaro or Cap Cana, Uvero Alto beaches can be quite heartbreaking...

What time of year were you at El Carmen?
The first review I have somewhat disagreed with. I was there for the July 4th holiday and my group had a ball. Anyone expecting this to be like Royalton Chic or Breathless clearly didn't do their homework. It is marketed as a more mature upscale experience. That being said, the swim-up bar was lively everyday and so was the beach bar. Also, the one outdoor bar that stayed open late was a really good time. The service I experienced was really good and I had no complaints. I thoguht the decor was much fresher than Excellence Punta Cana in my opinion.
We’re going for the July 4th this upcoming Holiday. We went to Excellence Oyster Bay for Jamaica Independence and also had a ball.

Great review, as always, but you must have missed the other half of the resort behind the main building. This is where you will find the second pool, just beyond the lake with the flamingos.

Like Vegas hotels, punta Cana properties accumulate miles rapidly. The best Vegas hotels remodel every few years, the great ones once a decade or so. Punts Cana hotels move at a much more gingerly pace, if at all... many times they are outright sold.

I went to Excellence Punta Cana in February 2007 and have always wanted to go back. I'm finally going back in a few weeks. I was a little torn between EPC and EEC based on some reviews I saw in some Facebook groups. I'm glad we decided to stick with EPC!
Great choice. We had a horrible time at El Carmen in October. Thank goodness we did a split stay, and ended our trip at EPC. What a difference. EPC was as wonderful as it had been the year before.

What do you find to be the most accurate weather related application when you are staying at these resorts and for future predictions? Weather Channel, AccuWeather, or WeatherBug, maybe something else. Trying to decide where we are going weather wise. There's some pretty big differences between the weather prediction on the applications.
Booked EEC right before you posted and I am having second thoughts. Lots of concerning reviews about rooms being dirty. Is finest Punta Cana the better option?
Was really hoping you'd get to Secrets Cap Cana in your travels. 🤣 I'm arriving there in 3 weeks, was hoping to see your "in depth" two cents.
You were way TOO kind to Excellence El Carmen. I would have given it a 2. In 2021 we went to Excellence Punta Cana, and LOVED IT. Had such a great time that we talked another couple into going to the DR with us in October and did a split stay between El Carmen (our first visit there) and then to Excellence Punta Cana. Our friends had never gone to an Excellence. El Carmen was a disaster. Breakfasts were mediocre at best, lunches were a disaster - my husband was served RAW meat. And I don't mean rare, I mean raw. We were given items we never even ordered because "oh, they had run out of xyz and thought they would give us this instead" and never ASKED what else we night like. Did they even consider allergies? Dinners however, both food and staff, were great. But there was No beach service. No pool service. That main pool is a joke. "Entertainment staff" were non existent. Staff were actually rude (not all of them of course, but too many to count). The icing on the cake was when one of the managers caught a staff member lying to my husband and invited him to her office to apologize. Boy, did she get an earful. More indicidents then I care to mention. She did her best to make it up to us, but that was our last full day there. Not much she could do. She did hire a LIMO to take us the following day to Excellence Punta Cana. NIGHT AND DAY. Within an HOUR of being there, our friends said "We should have stayed here the entire 12 days." Excellence Punta Cana was again top notch. The staff, the food, the service 24/7. What a difference. Excellence Punta Cana is a class act. El Carmen? Just NO.
Am I crazy for thinking the beach in punts Cana is not great? There are so many better Caribbean beaches.

Thanks James! Yeah, not a big fan of Tapas either. The dishes are intentionally small, in the aperitivo type model. Been to PM Excellence and Tapas (for me) is one of the last considerations.

They are ok those Excellence properties as well as Finest but the prob I see is that they all look the same. The layouts for the lobby, pool, and campus are usually the same. If you go to the Finest in Playa Mujeres it looks exactly the same. Seems like they just rinse and repeat and just change the decor around. I preferred Lopesan

You can just Google excursions PC and all the sites will display.

I thought EEC had a younger crowd than EPC at least when i was there and much more boisterous. I preferred the quiet at EPC more. Enjoyed the additional restaurants at EEC.
I agree that EEC had a younger crowd as well. I did prefer it over PC.

No, the price of an all-inclusive room is markedly less with one person. Do a quote online 1 v 2 people and observe the difference.

I have watched all your videos on the resorts in Punta Cana especially excellence punta Cana and thought el carman was going to be the superior resort. I just got married a couple weeks ago and had my mind set on going to excellence el Carmen for our honeymoon but after your video I think excellence punta Cana is the right fit for us. Hey bro another great vid! Can you clarify something for us, when you say the food is good for punta Cana or for a AI can you maybe compare it to a 4 or 5 star restaurant in the US? The reason I’m asking is my wife and I went to Hotel Mousai in puerto Vallarta and the food at the included steakhouse and the Japanese restaurants were legit 5 star by American standards. So we now compare all experiences to that hotel.
Forbes four star or five star? There are only 113, and 67 in the US., respectively.
Of the 20 punta cana all inclusives I've been, you wont find any meals of that caliber. The very best meal at the very best restaurant would maybe qualify as fringe consideration on its very best day.
I have encountered them in Mexico however, where the food ,in general, is noticeably better.

The new one? There's a Marriott brand there that also has my attention. Tulum needs to happen, but it's not my favorite logistically so I need to amp myself up for it
One thing I've noticed is how 'corporate looking' the architecture of the buildings are 😅
