You got lucky in this fight. I got wiped on my first try, because he put everybody to sleep with nightmares and then the mobs killed me because all my turns were skipped. When he sucks somebody in, he keeps them and heals by stealing their health until you deal lots of damage to him. The reason Laura got out unharmed and almost immedeately was because Dark Matter went off right after she was sucked in. Very lucky timing. After loosing two more times I cheesed it by setting off all S-Breaks at the beginning of the fight, switching in the two remaining members and using theirs as well.
I was so confused. I thought he just didn't like the way she tasted or something. And hey, I consider setting off all of your S-Breaks a genuine strategy. You gotta do what you gotta do, and the game lets you do it, so why not. Nightmare seems like an insanely OP status ailment though, so I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.
