In Ilioupoli, a quiet, residential district south of Athens in Greece, Point Supreme Architects were tasked with converting a cold basement storage space into a functional studio apartment. Situated on the bottom floor of a multigenerational building, Ilioupoli apartment is intended as a future home for the family’s younger children, keeping the family together for longer while allowing them their own spaces. Previously an entirely open concrete room, the architects divided the space by extending the existing enclosed toilet into a full bathroom, adding an entryway partition screen and planter, as well as curtained sliding glass doors to enclose the bedroom. The home is further divided by colour, with the kitchen featuring a deep maroon laminate, a full size fridge as well as a custom island bench that opens on all four sides for storage. A contrasting bold blue bathroom is visible from the kitchen through a window in the wall between the two rooms that also allows for the flow of light. Division through flexible partitions, colour and materials creates a space that feels larger and more varied than it is, ensuring even basement storage can become a comfortable home.

I love this channel but I find it odd that people in small spaces don't ever seem to want a comfortable chair or couch.

I was thinking the same. Probably the third or fourth video where I thought something like “swap that built in bench for a proper two to three seater sofa and I’m sold!”. In this case those two carver chairs. Or add an additional low line sofa under the book shelf.

I know right… the majority don’t. There’s comfy seating that doesn’t take up space. I’ve just come. To the conclusion that people go to and from the dining room seats to the bed.😅

I was thinking in myslef and I work and watch movies/series in my computer. I own a sofa but never use it and if I want watch something more comfortably I go to the bed with the ipad. I think that this can be related with the devices? But regarding to the video, maybe the chairs are a provisional solution since the space allows a 2 site-couch.

I understand the principle that drives designers to use a lot of neutral colors/whites in maintaining a minimalist home. It really does make sense especially for small spaces. But! I am absolutely amazed when designers are able to incorporate color in this way because it gives so much life to a home and defines zones effectively without resorting to the default color scheme for minimalist homes. I wonder if this really is 55sqm, it feels much bigger.

Though there are only 2 seats in the living area, surely the chairs from the dining area can provide an area to socialize...
And yet, my preference would be to be to have
three "loveseats", for more comfortable gathering areas.

Mediterranean cultures usually gather around a table, not so much in a "living room" - even the term is a foreign one in Spanish, for example. People don't mind watching TV while eating/drinking at a table (maybe the owners didn't ask for a sofa!). Our "needs" depend on the culture we're immersed in.

This is easily a standout from many spaces featured in this channel so far. The use of multi color and multi texture is charming and refreshing from a typical minimalist approach in this kind of small space. There are many parts that are left untouched especially like the exposed concrete texture on core pillars that add significant character to the space. Also the bathroom in that light sky blue is gorgeous. I love it. Kudos to the designers ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

for me it's very very small. from 30sqm to 50sqm => a little small to average. from 50sqm to 80sqm => more than enough if you're alone, potentially small if you add one or two people living with you. >80sqm => big.

I have seen dozens of Never Too Small episodes, and this is the first one I really, really like! They used COLOR, not just white or plywood brown! I also loved the use of plants, especially the vine woven into the entry divider. The only "fail" was the two very uncomfortable-looking chairs in the "living room." A small cushy sofa would have been a better choice.

Nice aesthetic, but i think they really missed a trick with the layout here.
So much space is reserved for the closet room, that could have been used for a snug living space with a corner couch.

This space might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s undeniably beautiful! The different partitions they’ve arranged throughout the space allows for privacy without feeling congested or closed off; most have some form of transparency, so the space still feels open and fluid. I’ll definitely be citing this for inspiration when I move in a few months.

One of the few spaces I could see myself living in comfortably! It always amazes me how small they usually make the kitchen. But this kitchen feels larger and more useful than usual! I would definitely swap those two chairs for a small comfy couch. I do wonder if it would've been easier to put the projector across from the bed which people are more likely to watch TV from in a smaller space. Other than that, it's pretty perfect. Have to say, this one is not my cup of tea at all. I really felt the potential from the initial pictures of the place and started to imagine an interior myself. I wonder, why people would not contrast the exposed concrete with a bright, natural wooden floor instead of using tiles.
I love the exposed concrete but it conveys a rather heavy and cold mood already, which is perfect to add some playful but still elegant, warm and rustic elements to it. I think the tiles are just too much for this place.
Also, combining the living room with the dining space adds some kind of uneasiness and a busy mood to a place for relaxing. Would have put the bed where the closets are and the living room where the bed is with sofas oriented towards the wall, etc. Still cool place.

    • @AnaMatei
      @AnaMatei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

The use of tiles on the floor instead of wood is not to my liking either, but this is the traditonal approach to floors in Greece, also in Spain, Croatia, Turkey and Morocco. There are some functional aspects to it. The proximity of the beach means a lot of sand will inevitably end up in the house, so tiles are easier to keep clean. The other reason for the tiled floors has to do with temperature and humidity control because it really gets very hot and humid in Athens in July, so much so that wooden floors would quickly become mouldy considering the lack of air circulation beneath a floor. Then, the tiles are naturally colder and help regulate body temperature when walking barefoot during the summer.

I felt exactly the same. Also the small tiles together with the japanese divider and other square stuff makes the room look too busy.
There´s just too many rectangular grids with a technical note overlaying each other.
I´also opted for a wooden floor but I totally see Ana´s point! Just a uniform floor or bigger tiles could do the job. A bit more matte rather than glossy - and a grout with not too much contrast to tiles would also help…

And the Japanese separation is fabulous! I've seen it in a few videos and photos the last month, and it really grows up every space. Stylish and calmly already.

Love the conversion. I personally would rather a couch instead of the two uncomfortable chairs with the coffee table. I also didn't love the blue of the bathroom, reminds me too much of public bathrooms. Really lovely reno overall though

A great transformation of a basement space into a lovely apartment. The dividing walls and shelves and plant trellis and doors letting light in or closing off with curtans, a great idea, giving it a feeling it is bigger than the sq m you have. Others have already commented on how they'ed rather have had a sofa or comfortable armchairs and a smaller or pull-out dining table. I would agree.

I love the wooden partitions and the layout. It feels spacious and homey. And even though I couldn't live with a red kitchen, I appreciate the use of color. The bedroom looks so cozy too. Well done!
