What did you think of this coin-op conversion of Paperboy for the C64? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1986: tinyurl.com/1986-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
One my my all time favourite arcade games(the speech always stood out in arcades, so you would hear it before seeing it).. and made my Christmas when I received it for my Commodore 64..still play this a lot now, all versions of this one I have played a really good...
Those are the best Christmas' ever - I remember getting a light gun for Christmas and the time traveller pack. Came as a pack with the C64 light fantastic. My mum thought it was a different computer than the breadbin so I had 2 x commodore 64s 😅🕹👌 but I wasn't complaining 🎄
I actually won a crazy competition a few years ago because of this game (the C64 version). There was a contest on classic game music. A tune from a game would be played, and people would have to submit their answers as to which game the music came from. Anyone who got it wrong was eliminated and the contest would continue with a new song. It was down to me and one other person. Every song at this point was an NES, SNES, or Sega Genesis (Mega Drive for my friends across the pond) game. Suddenly, the theme from THIS game appeared... the only C64 theme... which was different from the arcade or NES Paperboy themes. I won specifically because it was the C64 version of the game. If they had played the NES or arcade version, I'm sure the competition would have continued. My opponent had never played the C64 version of the game so he couldn't answer it. LOL
Awesome. Admittedly I could probably guess a load of the C64 games from their music but Paperboy would have been a difficult one for me. It's definitely the music that brings the mist nostalgia from the majority of these games though for definite. Bravo for winning the competition ❤️🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Thanks! I think there's a reason why I remembered the music for C64 Paperboy. Here in the US, home video games lost their popularity between the Atari 2600 and NES days... but arcades seemed to still be popular. Our local arcade had a Paperboy game that was pretty popular. Since I had the game on the C64, a lot of my friends would come to my house to play (probably because I was one of the few who continued to collect home video games during the US home video game crash)... so I heard the music a lot. I had no idea that would help me win a contest in the future. LOL
PAPERBOY IS IN TOWN! LOCK YOUR DOORS 😹!! PROTECT YOUR WINDOWS 😹!!! RELEASE THE HOUNDS 😹!!!! 😹👍 PAPERBOY is one of my childhood favorite classic games on the Commodore 64 😺👍🕹️. I remember, when i was a little kid, my mom left to work, and me and my dad switched on our Commodore 64 and played so many great games - including PAPERBOY 😹👍🕹️. I still have it for my Commodore 64 as the tape (Encore) and disk (Elite) versions 😺👍🕹️. I akso have the original Arcade version of this game for my PlayStation 2 in a compilation called MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES 😺👍🕹️. I believe, i still have the Amiga version, too 😹👍🕹️.
When playing arcade version I would try my best to keep customers, watch the traffic and not waste any papers just so I can get a lot of points! When playing C-64 version, I would try my best to throw a free newspaper through all the windows of non-customers so they would be interested in hiring me as their Paperboy!
What a great retro channel this is, Bravo CCG 👍 Paperboy was a great game. I’m just waiting for Emlyn Hughes Soccer, Microprose Soccer and Graham Gooch’s Cricket. That’s if you’ve not already covered them!!
The first time I remember seeing this as a kid was on a school trip to an amusement park where they had an arcade. The game made a big impression on me and always fascinated me back then. But it wasn't really the gameplay that I liked. Because I've never found it that fun to play really. It was more the entire concept, graphics etc that did something for me. It's a real classic. The c64 version was ok but a bit of a letdown from the unreachable expectations you had as a kid. Great video as always! ❤
Wherever I went as a kid, as soon as I saw any arcades I quickly made a beeline to them! I dont know if it was the loud pumping music or the smoke filled atmosphere but playing games like this as a kid in the coin-ops are definitely some of my very fondest memories growing up 😇🕹️👌 Thanks Mats
I had a job as a paperboy way back in the day. I believe I got paid something on the order of 11 cents per delivery, money I sorely needed to buy more Commodore 64 games. Fortunately, I didn't need to avoid the grim reaper, though there were some neighborhood dogs who liked to chase me around on my bike. It turns out that the newspaper company doesn't like when you throw the paper from the bicycle. We needed to get off the bike and carry the paper to the customer's front door.
Hahaha well you've definitely had plenty of experience in life so am guaranteeing that you're probably awesome at this game too. There's no grim reapers in the street here in the town I live in but the majority of them look like there's not long to wait 😅🕹👌
I did have a paper round, but I never rode a bike to do it. The C64 version is fairly good, I like the Mark Cooksey music. The graphics were designed that way to make it easier to do the night stage and highlight the subscriber houses. The technical explanation is to do with multicolour mode, giving you three colours plus a background colour. That's set to one grey here. The character colour is then changed to black, white, yellow or green to highlight the houses or to portray the night-time.
It's always absolutely amazing what the programmers could do, the tinkering and tailoring to create these games. I can only imagine how many hours were exhausted 😇🕹👌
This game was great, in the arcade it had actual handlebars as a controller. I infact DID deliver papers every sunday morning (the sunday sun, toronto canada). I didnt notice any footage of the bonus lvl at the end of each street after the chopper....maybe that was only in the arcade version?
So many happy memories of playing this bavk in the day. Great effort for the humble c64 Some versions u could just ride on the edge of the pavement and not get hit Remember the arcade version being played on kids quiz show ,called first class with Debbie greenwood
Loved the arcade version and remember being disappointed by the conversion. Playability was still there, but the graphics were poor and the omissions noticeable. What a game though.
Definitely an easy game to pick up and play and it does hold my attention for a while - loved it on the arcade too, even though am pretty poor at it 😇🕹️👌
Believe it or not, you would get less points for hitting the door than the mailbox. I think you can actually hit both for more points, but I'm not sure. The crazy thing is... in the arcade version the door was a bigger and much easier target to hit than the mailbox. I believe they intended you to usually hit the door, and only hit the mailbox if you manage to get a perfect shot. If you managed to hit the mailbox in the arcade, you would often hear the character say something like "Yeah! Right in the mailbox!" It's funny that the mailbox is so much easier to hit in the C64 version.
@@Syragar was the Paperboy game easier to play then target hit the door or the mailbox on the Amiga, Genesis, Lynx, Master System, NES, ST port (version)
I try my lad with some of these games and it was definitely this one that he took a shine too. I think its the simplicity of the game and how easy it is to just pick up and play - and can return to it over and over without it really becoming too boring 😇🕹️👌
Tough game, getting a clear run and finishing the week was a challenge for sure. After many plays you'd learn the patterns of the residents and could anticipate them.... but even then it was tough 😇🕹️👌

I seem to remember tht quiz! I need to try and search for that 😇🕹👌
The moving space for your bike is limited on the C64 version. Back then never knew there was a Paperboy 2 on the Commodore.
Yeah the sequel came out for the Amiga, I must take a look at that sometime in the future 😇🕹️👌
Today's headlines would read. The Ashes are coming home and the poms can't stay in there crease
Undoubtedly! 🏏😇🕹️👌
Played this a lot. Mostly on the Commodore 64, Atari Lynx and Arcade. Not a bad conversation of a game. Simple, but additive.
I remember my mate had this on his Lynx! Simple game but very addictive 😇🕹👌🚴♀️🗞

I was a huge fan of the arcade version, but really hated this conversion. It’s missing so many of the fun aspects of the arcade version.
Yeah admittedly the arcade versions will always be superior, still a decent conversion all the same 😇🕹️👌
Then go play the Paperboy Amiga, Atari Lynx, Atari ST, Genesis/Mega-Drive port (version)
Lots of good memories of this in the arcade, and played the sh*t out of the C64 version. Still play it sometimes, as do my kids! 😁

This game is evil. I always thought it funny that only the people on one side of the street have a newspaper subscription.
😅 you make a very good point there! 🚴♀️🗞🕹👌
Once and ONLY ONCE did I finish a run on this game... Great times.
PC: Planet ZOG is definitely the worst...

Canny version this was. Spent a bloody bomb on this in the arcade, and loved the 'Handle bar' version in the arcade!🚲🗞🗞🗞🗞🗞🗞🗞🗞🗞🗞
I played this last year on the handlebar style arcade cabinet, amazing game on coin-op, but was mega fast for me so I failed many times, quickly 😇🕹️👌
