The Downfall of Simone Biles (and why it wasn't her fault)

  • Simone Biles dominated the headlines at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but not in the way that anyone expected. Her withdrawal from both the team and individual all-around competitions changed the Games completely, and sparked a controversy around mental health in sports that’s still going on today. After all this time, we’re still asking the same question we were a year ago-what happened to Simone Biles? Was her gymnastics career always destined to end this way, or was there something she could have done about it?

I completely agree with you 100% on this video. I am a hugeeeee Simone Biles fan and it’s completely understandable why she decided to put her mental health first. I hope that you mention her Podium Training routines in Part 2 as although it was not counted as an Olympic competition, she showed exactly what she was capable of and what she the skills she was planning to compete. Her talent is undeniable and people get so caught up saying that she “quit” when in reality she probably said, a gold medal is not worth landing on my neck and ending up paralyzed or even worse, SPECIALLY with the skills she was performing. I applaud her for putting herself first.

Either way, she has made her mark on the support & at this point is completely up to her & her mental sanity, because on top of gold medals, her mental health comes first. It’s not like she needs more gold medals because EVERYONE knows there’s just no one that can come even close to her. Whatever she decides to do, there’s no doubt we were all blessed to have witnessed this once in a lifetime athlete.

Great video. You hit the nail on the head. Before Simone represents the US at an Olympics, she is representing USAG. Now imagine the awkwardness of USAG putting her on a pedestal and exploiting her accomplishments while she was in active litigation with them as she ran down that vault runway in Tokyo and lost her air awareness. Stated differently, she was representing and competing for the defendant in her lawsuit while at the Olympics. She has gone through so much trauma from Nassar alone and so many morons failed to connect the dots. So, thank you.

I like to compare gymnastics with competitive climbing. Both sports require to focus on the task, commit fully to the next move, overcome pain and wear and tear, and accept the risk of serious injury. But the cultures are completely different. The climbers support each other, literally cheer for each other despite being competitors, accept that even the best fail to make it to the top sometimes, try to do things as safe as possible, have fun climbing, and are as a result, fun to watch. I hope gymnastics can be similar one day.

I don't think any rational person disagrees with Simone's decision to withdraw from team competition. It was best for her safety and the team result as all scores count in the team final, and if she had said that and stopped there would not have been any controversy. However, it continued on into a crusade for mental health and putting yourself first and I think that's what some people object to. When you decide to compete for a team you can't then talk about putting yourself first. I guess everyone now thinks Kerri Strug should not have made that second vault in Atlanta.

When you have the Ace in the hole and the rest of the face cards to match, it is only human to get upset when you don't have the winning hand and the ace turns out to be the joker. Whatever mental issues Simone was going through at the last Olympics, yeah, I was upset because the last thing I wanted was the cheating Russians to win. At least Sunni won AA and Jade and Mikaela [sp] won individual medals. Simone was our greatest female gymnast, and no one can ever take away that accolade. I wish her the absolute best always. The Nassar years scarred our gymnasts and they will suffer PTSD for much of their adult lives. It's a sh!tty world we live in when such outrageous acts can go 'undetected' for years. My problems with Simone are as follows:
    1. She put the goat on her leo, no one made her do it, so she can't complain about others putting pressure on her. I think when Suni beat her on day 2 of the trials she got scared.
    2. In the days following her withdrawal, the story changed 2 or 3 times until they found something the public would swallow.
    3. She could have withdrawn anytime prior to the start of competition and an alternate could have gone in. The true alternates were I believe out with Covid, but they could have but Jade Carey in. Put in Jade's vault over Simone's botched vault, and Jade's floor over the lowest floor score and we give ROC a fight. Had she not gone to trials, they would have constructed the team differently and Jade and Leanne Wong would have made the team, and we probably win gold. She stole medals from those girls.
I sympathize with her struggles, but she was selfish in her timing.

Seeing Simone with her beauty, her talent, her husband, her millions and millions, her popularity and support online...it just didn't seem authentic and still doesn't. For me, she put her own self before her team which is not the time to do that, especially against Russia. Grishina did that in London too but that was different. She refused to do beam because she was seriously having a panic attack which carried over to floor which was her best event. She still went out there and failed epically. Simone copped out. Plain and simple..whether there was politics involved and she was rebelling, I don't know. Or she was using mental health as a crutch to escape being canceled for being selfish. IDK...I know that excuse would never fly today. She would be called woke and lose her endorsements for quitting.

So, when she hit that vault poorly, and she was judged accordingly, you could see that she was done and didn't want to sully her career. Which is fair.
