      Yeah I know someone like that IRL. It's me. It's not a good thing. You gotta know you're just pretending you're this big shot saviour that has to brave difficulties for others. In reality maybe you just don't wanna think about the difficulties and that would be fine, but no, we have to think we're fucking superman and be sorely disappointed when we have to cope with the fact that we very much are not. I have always loved the faction of loners and mercs, but "duty" evoked at least a note of respect in me, this is a kind of what they are called in the books “Witchers” of the zone, in fact they act as the police, catching inveterate assholes in the Zone and transferring them to the mainland. They create raids to search for information and against mutants where there are too many of them. Scientific institutes cooperate with them and provide them with equipment for testing. They hand over all artifacts to the mainland for study, not into private hands. They protect scientists and accompany them for free. Despite the fact that they seem to want to destroy it, deep down in their hearts they most likely understand how incredibly difficult or even impossible it is, so without giving up their work they do everything to at least restrain it while doing, to some extent, many useful actions.

    Thanks for the translation! While Duty has its flaws and corruptions, I've always appreciated that most of its members do seem to be motivated to protect the outside world from the horrors of the Zone - it's more than just rhetoric.

      Personally I always supported Duty more than Freedom. A good arguement could be made that Freedom was the right choice prior to Clear Sky, that co-existance with the zone is the best choice and trying to fight it only makes things worse, but that was when the C-Consciousness was containing it. But during and after the events of the game, Duty is the right choice, the C-Consciousness was causing emissions and using the Monolith and Mutants to cull the Stalkers and kill Strelok.
      After Strelok kills the C-Consciousness the zone turns from a dangerous but contained phenomina to a threat to all humanity. Emissions become a daily occurrence, which lore states causes the zone to expand, mutants that were previously only spotted close to the center are now encountered near the perimeter, and Duties fear of the mutants spreading past the Cordon seem all the more likely now that they are no longer being controlled or influenced by the C-Consciousness.

    • @declanedmison5442
      @declanedmison5442 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@GateCaptain Problem is, trying to kill the zone is the reason it has got this bad in the first place. Strelok trying to end it only made it worse, which basically confirms Freedom’s whole idea; trying to fight the zone will only make it worse for everyone.

    • @GateCaptain
      @GateCaptain 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      @@declanedmison5442 That is in part true, Strelok did make things worse by destroying the C-consciousness. But now that the zone is expanding, there are daily emissions, and mutants are spreading further than they ever have before, it makes duties job more vital than ever. The zone is no longer a contained oddity that only poses a threat to those who venture into it, it is a growing cancer that will gradually absorb more and more territory, spreading dangerous creatures outside of its borders. Freedom is right in that people shouldn't just prod at the zone, and they are right in that we cannot just destroy it. But now Duty is correct in that they must find a way to contain the zone and eventually destroy it, that co-existance is no longer a viable long term solution.

They don't attack others senselessly, they protect the smaller and weaker factions and take pride in it. Most importantly, I hate the zone... Well.. The C-Con and those responsible for it's creation. Duty has taken upon themselves to control it and make sure it does not impact or harm people, especially those outside of the zone. It's a very noble cause. Military are literal pussies, too afraid to venture in again. Duty are ex-military that saw and experienced the zone and it's horrors and took it on a personal level. Against all odds determined to complete their original military mission (to destroy it) as it was made up of surviving members from the second disaster that were tasked to destroy it, so they will - come hell or high water, while the actual military are just sitting around the zone, too afraid to go back in until all anomalies have been mapped out and save paths guaranteed (which will never happen since it forever changes) you just have to take your losses and push in, just like Duty is doing! Constant lack of good (or even remotely decent) food is one of the reasons why “bars” are so profitable in the Zone. After days or weeks of living off hardtack, crappy sausage and canned meat stalkers are ready to pay hard cash for a portion of fried potatoes, pickles and tomatoes with some questionable (but freshly cooked) meat.
      Problem is that Zone does not grow anything remotely edible and no farms exist inside for obvious reasons, while food traffic from outside is blocked or fleeced heavily by military.
      However some stalkers developed a taste for mutant meat, eating bizarre “delicacies” like bloodsucker tentacles, flesh’s eyes (or whole Flesh) or mutated boar. Of course eating any mutant meat is risky since it carries unstable DNA strains, possibly unknown viruses or mutated parasites and of course radiation.

      I appreciate their intentions and dedication, but their methods seem like an exercise in futility. To borrow a quote from someone else, if the Zone could be destroyed by shooting at it, it would've vanished long ago. While the C-Consciousness was still active, Duty's actions only seemed to provoke it, like poking a hornet's nest. Now that the C-Con is gone and the Zone is wild and uncontrolled, who knows if Duty's provocations will make things better or worse.

    I have played this series from the first game and have enjoyed most of them. I really enjoy the setting and gameplay, but never bothered to look up what the actual spoken lines were. So I was basing that opinion of solely the text boxes and translated spoken bits, projecting my own opinion of factions personalities without understanding the untranslated stuff fleshing them out.
    So Duty goes from being just another bland ‘generic mil dudes’ group into a bunch of world-weary special operations types exhausted from having to spend years fighting nigh unending hordes of horrific mutants breaking free, random thugs, morons messing with reality warping artifacts, and the world itself. All this with next to no supplies in a world where no one seems concerned about this active tumor on reality slowly spreading.
    I actually like the series more now than before, a nice surprise for today.

    Shit, I'm a diehard for Freedom, and I've had playthroughs where I'd go and wipe out the Bar of every single Dutyer I could find.
    But now, I'm not so sure. I feel like a greater monster than anything the Zone could ever create. These were men, with the same needs and wants as anyone else, shaken to their very core by the horrors of the Zone. Now, I'm not so sure about where my ideas have led me.

    • @gloriousblobber9647

      I mean, Duty would literally go hell and high water to defend against the Zone. I'd argue that their points to destroy all of the Zone can be quite tempered with goodwill, as seen with their defense for the Ecologists.. and even the Loners. If their flaw is that they will not allow anyone to use the Zone for gain... then why do they establish a base in the center of the Zone where Loners are allowed to roam and have a safe place to sleep before heading to the more dangerous parts of the Zone? If Freedom wasn't the one who was defending the Barrier, they'd protect that area aswell. I'd wager they'd practically even eat their own guts and ask for more. Duty is fucking relentless. With the Zone even increasing now, because of the deaths of C-Consciousness... we need more people like the Duty.

    Love the line where the duty soldier gives freedom credit for warfare. My first impression of them was negative in SOC since they block you from entering the bar unless you have something they want.
    They also mocked me for not killing enough mutants when they attacked the encampment out side. Maybe I would of been more receptive if I understood the small talk they had. They are clearly exhausted from a mission that may very well be impossible to accomplish.

    This is how Stalker got factions right. In games like Skyrim, the only major two factions are either imperialist empires played like a puppet by elves or nord supremacists who want to kick out all non-nords.
    In Stalker, every faction actually makes sense. Freedom, who’ve seen the beauty of the Zone and want to live in harmony with it. Duty, who’ve seen the horrors of the zone, and want to destroy it to protect humanity. Ecologists, who want to understand the Zone to better mankind. Military, who try to contain the Zone and cordon it off to prevent people from getting hurt. Mercs, who want to make a quick buck. There are a couple others, but you get my point. The player is able to choose from a cornucopia of complex moral dilemmas and doesn’t railroad the player into ends that they don’t agree with. More than that, the game doesn’t shame you for choosing any of them.
