Hi Ronny, great to see ya at the Adelaide 4x4 show on Friday👍🏼 The quick fix for the man cave door hitting the jockey wheel is to flip the wheel 180 inwards. Problem solved👍🏼👍🏼 had the same issue…
Small displacement engines definitely struggle with towing fuel economy, especially under heavy loads or heavy strain (soft sand). It's the trade off as is longevity compared to bigger engines. Bigger engines are thirsty under normal driving (empty) but when the loads are added, that's where they pay off.
Cheers for the unbiased review mate. Convinced me to take the plunge and become part of the Patriot Family. Picked up my X1 N yesterday and looking forward to the adventures ahead.👍
I don't think you can compare a trailer and a caravan for Ronny's Kind of usage. Mostly small, tight tracks with low clearence. The weight and the mere chance of (inevitable) damage to a caravan would make it prohibative. I have a 23 ft caravan with all the fruit, but after watching Ronny's video's, which originally started because I've just ordered a new Hilux and saw his project by chance, I am now looking at combining the two. Decking out the Hilux to do back to roots camping as well as retaining my 200 and caravan for those different type of trips. In general Ronny loving the videos. Really helpful in picking out what's relevant for me and making informed decisions etc. so from that perspective, I couldn't ask for more. See around the roads in Wangara and beyond. Cheers and thanks
Great review. I also had the infuriating problem with the jockey wheel interfering with the opening of the man cave. I found a solution by just loosening off the clamp bracket bolts and twisting it ever so slightly so that the grease nipple on the wheel drops into the gap in the drawbar frame and suddenly there’s clearance. Takes 10 minutes and so much better. Also, made up aluminium wind shields for the stove for windy conditions and the stove works great too!
Hi Ronny, many thanks for a very informatively inside user view and comparison. Scrolling to the reviews, the old question comes every time back from the audience: trailer vs. van. Actually for such an experienced audience it should not be brought into comparison. The one fits all is not feasible! Living full time in a off-road van limits you to where you can go and not. But can carry the things required to stay out for months or even years without a house as base camp. Going out for a couple weeks with a off-road trailer nearly anywhere but with the limited fit out, requires a base camp, house or apartment to return to. Our solution would be: We have an off-road caravan for live-in and would be glad for more extreme trips to rent such a compact off-road trailer if possible. It’s all subject the personal circumstances. Anyhow, that’s my point of view… Cheers…
G'day Ronny, crackin vid mate. At 30:53 regarding getting things out of the garage section, maybe the $5 270mm indoor broom from the big green warehouse could help, maybe even turning it around you could also flick the lightswitch on n off...
Ronny, you can get a valve which will bypass the water in the "hot" line so it flows back into the tank until the water going through the valve gets hot. You turn the hot tap on and no water flows out until it is hot. Reduces the water wastage you described.
Hi, I learned a lot from your discussion. Would you mind talking a bit more about the chemical toilet? What brand it is, the bag you have around it and where you go dump it when it’s full? Also why a chemical and not composting or other type?
Ronny...I can highly recommend a tune. We have a 2010 Prado 150 with the old 3litre D4D. We noticed a great change with fuel economy and power both towing and without. Worth it 100%. Good torque gains and notice it a lot while towing. Our issue is the 5-speed auto and torque converter. Have bought a lock-out kit, pending install, which should help with the TC running up and down on the highway
Great review. We have a different brand trailer, of similar design. We fitted a Bushman’s 270 awning. Can’t recommend it highly enough. Quick set up and down, no poles and super solid. Worth every cent. Walls available too. Worth consideration, the only con if you had to find one, little heavier than most 👍.
A question about the different fridges used. One is an Engel (32L maybe?) and the other is... what? Asking as a soon-to-be X1-N owner who didn't option in the fridge.
hi ronny entertaining and informative as always and love the honesty. I am wondering what you think of slide on campers like the tray on (not the big northstar). I appreciate they are more for travelling and longer stays then trips like yours but does mean no towing, which has to be a bonus in places like fraser, desert, csr, cape doesnt it?
I have a trayon slide on sitting on a 4.2td patrol and I would not trade it for anything I just love it what everyone has to realise no matter what your set up everything is a compromise but for me the trayon is as close to perfection for what I do and my circumstances.
Hi Ronny, great and honest review ! Does a tinny fit on top instead of a rooftop tent? And how does the short drawbar fit with a Troopy and 2 spares at the rear ? Cheers from europe! C.A
Hi Ronny, I've got an X1 with extended drawbar so I can open the rear door on my Prado. I find it still tracks well in tight spots - the extension is only 200mm. Also I have no problems opening the man cave with the jockey wheel stored on the drawbar. Maybe it's the extended drawbar but the A-frame and jockey wheel storage mount looks the same on your X1N as it does my X1. Maybe Justin or Tommy can explain? Agree reversing is more tricky the shorter the drawbar. Cheers Lee
There are so many sliders , guides and translation systems inside the trailer . Which is of course makes it more comfortable to use but adds a lot of extra weight
Hey Ronny, great review, we have a stockman pod trailer with a feldon shelter crows nest on it & a do35, thought you might like to look at the jockey wheel buddy, you can attach it to the jockey wheel as a permanent plate to stop it sinking into the sand
I'm planning on building camper trailer myself (not as high tech as this one obviously) and plant a roof top tent on it. Going for one of those tents that open to the side for extra room, since I'm fairly large person and it would be nice if my wife and our kid would also fit there 😅
Hi Ronny very informative Video and well presented. I do have a question though where did you get the Skid Row I find the band but not the device for trailers. Many thanks
Would you ever consider the Alu Cab canopy camper ? Could you do a review of one on a Hilux or other truck? I would love to know your thoughts on them.
Great video Ronnie. Out of curiosity what leaf rates are you running in the back of the Hilux for towing? Im sure its been covered in prior videos but Im running 600kg constants which for towing is incredible. Unladen though is like driving around on wooden blocks and doesnt help much when driving tough terrain due to its rigidity whilst unladen.
Great video Ronny. I’ve got an X1N and couldn’t agree more with you. Left-field question; how do you get your 180 zero 23 awning into Australia buying it online in the US?
the awnings leak when it rains along the seams. So you have droplets of water all along the seams. Very annoying when you are camped up in the rain. It will be good when Patriot sort this issue out. Perhaps a better awning that is self supporting would be good.
Talking fuel consumption in the hilux I hope he wasn’t going off what it says on the dash. Because it is super inaccurate. We use these same hiluxs for work and they chew fuel. About 15-16L/100km

Supapeg makes the awning on the Patriot. They now have a new freestanding awning that might suit better for a quick setup.

Same as the no 5 army trailer, short drawbar, great in the bush but terrible to reverse. Your right, once you loose it there is no fixing it.

Did you change your gear ratio when you installed 33's?
if you are breaking latches every so often in the traveling you do Ron, you might want to consider ratchet straps as a locking system for the trailer

If it had a diff could it drive ?
