That's a good idea, but if you're traveling with other people and a situation arises in which you cannot communicate, for whatever reason, those other people won't know what's where, so I'd stick to labeling. Although you can use the colour code as reinforcement of that labeling. Say, red labeled "first aid", green- "camping gear", etc.

We use a grab bag that’s behind the drivers seat on the floor. It’s a hi-vis orange with small first aid kit, hand held GPS with compass and map, EPIRB, water tablets and 2 litre bladder, long life energy bars, matches, knife, hi-vis vest, foil blanket. All fits in the little backpack and it’s all I have to show a passenger as if the shit hits the fan, grab the bag and get away from the vehicle.

Best tip I know is think outside the boot/canopy/rear. Could that box of spare parts live in the engine bay cable tie a spare axle shaft underneath the vehicle? maybe you have a winch bar but no winch yet. Could a tool box live in that space? Space under and behind seats? Foot wells nets to hold light items against the roof roll ground sheets and tarps and place at base of the windscreen? etc every vehicle is different and can give tips and ideas.
Excellent video again the production quality lately has improved massively 👍🏻

These videos are gold. Especially for people just getting started. I'm guilty of being too heavy on the rack. One thing to mention is to be conscious of your vehicles weight along with braking distance when loaded or even unloaded. Unloaded ive found with all the armor im still very heavy. I've since began keeping a good amount of space between myself and the vehicle in front.

Let's be honest though; you can never have too many axes!
But yeah, I've found it's all about packing smart. Because I'm usually either packing the night before over a few beers, packing at the last minute because I've been lazy or because I'm just forgetful at the best of times; I have a packing list that I just work my way down depending on the nature of the trip (day trip, weekender or longer etc.) and add or remove items as required.
And yeah, some people really do like to give their roof racks a run for their money at times.

The ABCD method is spot on. Labeling benefits increases as you move from A to D. Since A stuff is easy to get to I don't label it. The stuff I use often (B stuff) like cooking supplies I don't label either since I use them every trip. But when you get to C and D it is very helpful to have labels. I use duct tape and write the contents of the container on the duct tape and for the C and D stuff it is very specific. For example one of my harder to get to storage containers has the following written on it:
    1/2 " impact wrench
    727 pan
    bottle jack
    C clamps (Large)
    flares
    Hand cleaner
    Hose clamp assortment
    Shorts/Shirt
Tire repair kit (value stem remover, caps and Gauge)
    Toilet Paper
    Transfer Pump
    Wire (heavy gauge)
So a quick glance and I know what is in it. I also keep this info on my tablet but I find that's mostly helpful to know that you have it, not where it is.

It had a red light led bar that activates when I open it 5cm and a white light bar that's mounted further in and was activated by a switch. It overhangs the rear of the car and together with the doors it gave fair illumination and protection from the rain when digging throughout the back of the car.

The airport baggage handler is also how courier companies/Aust Post etc... handle our parcels on a daily basis. Another great video. My rule of thumb is KISS... and If you forget it this time write it down in a note pad (kept in the console) for next time. I use clear containers with lids so I can see what in them. I put some velcro on the bottom of my first aid kit and it sticks to the carpet on the top of my draw system and doesn't slide around. As my 80 series is my Daily and when not off camping or going away there is basically nothing in the back ontop of the draws.

Friends of mine travelled in a 4wd from the Gold Coast to Darwin and Kakadu and back. First day they returned and emptied out the vehicle, including the car fridge. They put a mattress in the back with bedding, a soft bag with a few clothes and bathroom items each and headed off again. They bought food every day, stayed where possible at free camp sites. They had mobiles as cameras and emergency contacts. They did have a satellite phone if they broke down out of mobile range. Being members of the Royal Automobile Association meant they should only need to change a puncture using their standard car tool kit. (Additional breakdown fees apply in remote areas). The 4wd would be beneficial for bad roads and the odd track but they managed in 2wd all the way.

If you are taking someone along that doesn't know much about the hobby, or way of life, have them pack with you for several reasons.
    1. They're going to learn A LOT about packing
    2. They should ask tons of questions about the gear, learning some along the way
    3. It helps develop an interest in the hobby
    4. I've heard some strangely good ideas from people whom have never done this before
Yes, it will take even longer to pack, but I believe it'll be worth it.

Ronny would be a great airport baggage handler lmao. When are you doing another camp setup video. My number 1 tip is if ur building a rear draw setup build it to how you pack.

Great video👍🏻 Seeing your fire extinguisher, made me think about when I saw a guy having an engine fire.. he emptied his 1kg canister in 3seconds.. and the fire wasnt out.. he was in big trouble.
Ever since that experience I carry a 2kg in front of my seat. And a 1kg in the back..

A 1kg extinguisher is for putting out people, not fires.

You'd be surprised what a properly utilised fire extinguisher can put out and the number of people who have no idea how to use them.

I carry an Element 40050 E50 Extinguisher (AKA: Firestryker), which is rated at 50 seconds of service. ABC&K fires, leaves no residue and is very compact, also it's not a pressurized canister, so no service needed (no expiration) and it stores well in extreme temperatures. They aren't cheep, but then your rig and contents aren't either. Comment from @sevencruiser below has similar information.

Drink cans are very thin and rub together then leak. I always put every can in a stubby holder before storing in the fridge or box...so they can't rub against each other.

    • @jarrod1687
      @jarrod1687 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Can do the same with bottles, if the fridge is in the cabin it stops the bottles rattling

I usually carry a couple of cartons of rum and coke, don’t really have a need for 48 stubby coolers though.... trick is to drink them before they have time to rub through so drink lots before doing corrugated roads.

I found if you wrap a layer or 2 of electrical tape around the can before putting it in the fridge it stops them rubbing. Takes up less room than the stubby holders.

Use the Corona 6 pack cardboard holders and they keep your beers upright too and don't rub as they have cardboard between them

usually i don't use special boxes to keep my things,,, today almost everything we buy comes with it's own box (usually it's not a hard box) so i use this option to save the things in their original pack which is labeled already so i don't need to label it again and it helps save space because they'll stack next/above each other without losing any space because of the hard box around

When we were kids, Dad got us all kit bags for our clothes when we went camping. They were plain canvas so we painted coats of arms on them to tell the difference. (We got the idea from a book.)

If you don't have a fridge, pre-make some dinner/meals and freeze it; chili or meat is a good example. Then layer it in the cooler. The top is the first day's dinner and so on till you get to the last days dinner. What you get is more room for food, less need for ice, and the meals are staged.

the worst part is taking someone with you that doesnt really go camping or isnt used to prioritising the gear they bring and you rock up to their house and they have about 10 bags worth of crap they have to bring

Thanks Ronny. Really helpful. Can I please request a video on all things water? We are a family of 5, Isuzu MU-X. Many locations have limited water. I’m thinking about under vehicle tanks, filters, pumps, purifiers, large water bladders, etc etc etc. What are your tips/thoughts?

Fire!!! dump your old fire extinguishers and get what is called a firestryker: smaller and easier to handle than a traditional bottle type it uses potassium to efficiently suppress all fires around or in a vehicle..big advantage is that it does not leave the sticky foam behind..for ever..Italien built but available in most places around the world; they are so small you could keep one on every door, ready for that hopefully unlikely event of a fire..

Another thing with crap up on the roof is that your vehicle may have a roof load limit set by the manufacturer.
On my vehicle it is 70kg which includes the weight of rack etc.
Doesn't leave a whole lot left once you stick on an awning and Maxtrax.

I wheel a 2007 navara d40 I keep my fire extinguisher and first aid kit under neat the passenger front seat and they're easy to get to aswell as stickers to show where they are, I vitalize the behind the rear seat area between the end of the cab and rear upper seat for my recovery gear on one side and my whole electrical 12v system on the other side, looks clean and tidy and no one can see it, ive done a whole tub setup with no canopy or hard lid just the tonneau cover and it's come up well, i don't carry as much as I used to as I've nearly rolled out once at glasshouse mountain with a big roof rack so took it off and when to roof crossbar with just a solar panel, treds and light bar

That's a good idea. When I have a new passenger I familiarize them with the location of the fire extinguisher and first aid kit. Sometimes they look at me like I am crazy but most people think it's a good idea.

I carry a lot of spare fluids. I write the purchase date/year on each bottle so I know how old they are. When it's time to service the Jeep I will use these and then replace them with new bottles.

Mine packing tips are: 1. compartmentalize. I don't have drawers so everything I need is in bins that I strap down. Put everything in a bin and sort them by use. i.e. I used to pack my compressor with my tools, but I used my compressor a lot more than my tools so now it has its own bin. 2. For people like us who film, find a way to strap your commonly used camera gear near you. I have a flat style camera bag that is strapped to my front passenger seat, so I have all my lenses and such at reach. I also clip a small camera bag to the headrest pointing forward so I can blindly grab the camera without taking my eyes off the road.
