Hey glad to see you back Jonathan during my Diploma I noted any minor changes like cleaning my tanks 2 or more of my 6x 2000L tanks or adding a filter sock to reduce floating solids in system caused a crash up to two weeks after depending on water temperature.

@@AquaponicsRevolution Hey Jonathan yer during Certs 2,3,4 an Diploma Of Aquaculture where we raised rainbow trout I came across aquaponics in cert 4 as a assessment was to find alternative to water exchanges where 1500-2000L of water was being poured down the drain which in these times is a waste.
      1) So I would take out 1600L an put into reserve tank out any of three systems. (BROODSTOCK, NURSERY or GROW-OUT)
      2) Stop the aquaponics where water by gravity would empty into its sump an pump an replace the water I took out.
      3) Once the aquaponic was nearly empty would drain reserve tank into aquaponics which then cycled throughout the aquaponics system for 24hrs until following day all NO2, NO3 an NH3 were totally removed so we could re-use the water the following day instead of the drain.
I currently have a small system but over time am building up tanks an drums aren't cheap.
I am using 12 goldfish currently once I get bigger tanks i want to get some silver perch an eventually once I get a hot house an go semi commercial get back into Rainbow trout as I know how to spawn an rear them myself.

this falls under the organic fertilizer part of the video, you are feeding the plants but ignoring the bacteria. i would still add some amount of ammonia to keep the engine running ( bacteria) human urine is a great free source or animal manure as he mentions. there are many ways to add ammonia even just continuing to add fish food will suffice as the bacteria will eat it as it breaks down in the solution.

@@sunilscorpy4594 any worms still eat and poop and create waste. but red wigglers are often suggested because of the rate at which they can eat and poop.
and depending on your climate or growing conditions, some worms may be better than wigglers for your area.

I call it bioponics. I had two systems, one that had fish and another that I fed with bionic material like amonia and sea kelp extract as well as other things like seagrow

    • @pershop4950
      @pershop4950 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's what I was about to say ... that once the fish are gone and the plants are just in water, then the system may have transitioned to some other kind of growing method, such as hydroponics where you may still feed the plants with soluble nutrients, or in this case, bioponics.

  • @jefferywise1906

Animal manure is a desperate last effort to me. What about titrating ammonia into a system? Of course you would have to calculate the amount that would be diluted in the total system water volume. But even 5ml daily would sustain a population of bacteria in a 200 liter system.
Granted I haven't even begun to build a system yet so I don't know a lot from practical experience.
On another note do you use EC meters. I plan on a lot of aeration so I'm not concerned about dissolved O2. I've kept both fresh and salt water aquariums in the past so monitoring ammonia nitrate and nitrite are not a problem.
For micronutrients do you advise kelp extracts? What iron source do you use.
The water here is harder than granite and we only get 3 inches of rain a year so your advice to use RO water is well taken.

Melbourne Aquaponics Yuma Arizona right where Arizona California and Mexico meet basically. With the Colorado River here there is actually a lot of agriculture in the immediate area. Dole uses the lettuce produced and Yuma County Arizona with Imperial County California have been referred to as the salad bowl of America.
If you ever saw a western with reference to the Yuma prison that's here.

you can buy bottles or gallons of ammonia from the cleaning section of a grocery store or $1 store. just measure in the amount that would be needed to keep the amount of ammonia close to 0. it means that the bacteria are eating it up . IIRC, the measurement would be taken about 24 hours later. this is the same idea as in when you are conditioning an aquarium for fish.
in this case, without fish, you don't need to be so exact about it being 0 or close to 0, but it doesn't hurt if you stay with the same practices so that later when you add fish again, the system will still be safe for them.

I'm thing to use the things I add to my garden presently. Comfry tea...harvest leaves, dry them and make tea through the winter. I also use coffee grounds, so....coffee? I am also thinking I'll grow a bunch of clover again dry for use in the winter make tea with that. I would use liquid fish fertilizer....if all the ingredients are clear or strained through cotton " tea bags" the space where I am going to do this gets cool, so I don't want fish dying....what do you think? Add some grow lights....a little heater to keep every warm enough. I have access to three fish tanks for free....so I think I'm gonna go get them...now I just need to find the space. Anyone out there have any suggestions of what I'm missing. I can also get chicken poop through the winter. Better get in the big garden ( outside ) now, but winter is coming and this sounds like a fun way to grow veggies this winter.

You can use urine and wood ash as a complete fertilizer. In a 20 litre bucket I pee 4 or 5 times, add a handful of wood ash, then fill with water. The ash has Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Iron.
I burn hard wood pallets and the nails supply the Iron. Stir and then apply it to the garden or to a fishless aquaponic system. It works for me.
