And, Dr. Anderson makes clear that White space is more valued than Black space. The book and interview make clear that Americans have not reached racial harmony. That Black people must consistently break barriers and jump through hoops. For certain African Americans, striving towards harmony is quite exhausting, wondering whether harmony will ever exist. One consequence is certain African Americans recoil and stay in their own space. Additionally, space implies that x-area (or space) is dominated by x-racial group. This means that "space" is not only Black or White, but Asian, Armenian, Arab, Latino, global, etc. How do we navigate those spaces? Why is it necessary? Why is it necessary to own and protect (your) space?
Other ethnic groups do not take this stance. For example, in my family we speak mixed english/spanish. However in the workplace this is forbidden when speaking in an professional setting. I’ve never heard one latino complain that this is “forcing white code switching”.
