    Speaking of etiquette it is a nice touch to thank the controller for their service. Unlike in real life these people do not get paid and spent theit spare time offering a better experience for pilots.

      Calm down it's just a game. It's like going around to every player in call of duty thanking them for their service because "unlike in real life these people do not get paid for protecting our country"
      On the flip side, without the vatsim pilots, there wouldn't be a point for vatsim atc

    At a lot of commercial airports (EGGP included) it is usually a rule to complete all pre-flight checks prior to taxy so that the controllers can get you out quickly. It is helps the controller immensely. Also, if you're on the tower frequency you usually don't need to call the controller with the "Ready for departure" call, they'll assume that you've completed the checks (because that's the rule). If you're on the ground frequency and get handed off to the tower, the first call is normally "G-ABCD ready for departure"...

    Thanks, this is great, I am studying for my PPL and this has been really helpful to help with the mental block I get when speaking to ATC. I just have two questions
    1- if I am flying at a towered airfield with no online controller at that tower, do I still need clearance to taxi and do I get that from any other controller or London Ctr?
    2- do I have to file a flight plan , because that is not always necessary in real life
    Thanks again

    • @expataviator7107
      @expataviator7107  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi!
      1. If London control are online (and the airfield in real life has a tower), then yes you’d call London control for taxi.
      2. Not for VFR no. (But it’s helpful for the VATSIM controllers if you do)

Better to do your first circuit at a class C airport. If I’m doubt just PM the controller, say you’re learning and want to understand why...most will help you out

    A good video, thank you. I'm working up my courage to go on VatSim and this has helped a lot. I'll watch your other videos before I dive in, then come back to this one before doing my first circuit. One question: ATIS gave you both QNH & QFE - I would have thought QFE would have been the more logical to use when doing a circuit but you set your altimeter to QNH & that was also the setting the controller gave you. Is there any reason for that?

    • @expataviator7107
      @expataviator7107  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Real world, I often fly a few circuits then leave and go local VFR. Changing from QFE to QNH is one less thing to think about. Also, the airspace is based on QNH and I'd rather know how far from it I am. For example, at Coventry you are under Birmingham airspace. Just personal preference. In America they dont use QFE at all.

    • @DerZeldaFan1
      @DerZeldaFan1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When controller said no higher than 1500 that was in reference to MSL, so it would be hard to tell how far from that boundary you are when having set QFE

    ["Would it be true to say that you are using one computer and two monitors, if so is there a frame rate hit? I have two computers one runs as the server with FSX on it the other is doing the weather AS16. I noticed that you dragged in the vPilot window so I guess you have two monitors on the same computer. I guess I could get a smaller monitor just for running vPilot on? Thanks for the video very nicely done. Joined VATSIM but not done one flight yet, learning curve is steep."]

    • @expataviator7107
      @expataviator7107  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, one computer, two monitors, sometimes three. With a modern multicore CPU I find that FSX/P3D/XP11 only use one core in any serious way, and so those other applications (vPilot, AS16) use all the free time that the other CPU cores have. My graphics card deals with the extra displays and so I've not seen a frame hit by having extra monitors. The complexity of networking things like vPilot just isnt worth it, not to mention two keyboards etc is a pain. So unless you have a poor PC with an old CPU, you should be fine.
      One word of caution. If you use things like Duet for iPad then that DOES affect frames as it uses the CPU to draw a virtual display which it sends to the iPad. So watch out of tools like that. Use a proper graphics card with proper outputs for extra displays or check out the Matrox TripleHead2Go.
      Good luck with VATSIM! You'll do fine. Find a quiet airfield and try some circuits. Tell them you are new and they will be happy to have you fly!

    I swear, it sounds to me like everyone talking on the radio (ATC in particular, but even pilots) does it in a way to make it so it's difficult to understand. It's not a matter of terminology, really. They could be telling me to walk into the next room, then go out the door of my house and it would be the same. In this video, the taxi clearance around 12:00 is a great example. Even with text on the screen, I can't make what the controller says fit what is on the screen.

    • @expataviator7107
      @expataviator7107  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spontaneous Order I totally get it, and unfortunately its the in the real world also especially if your radio is poor. So much is anticipating what is going to be said. Remember you can always ask for say again or ‘speak slowly’ or even look up ‘words twice’ in the CAP413. Have a great weekend!

      @spontaneousorder5670 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @flyingfcuk2
      @flyingfcuk2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      dave jones frequencies match, but there are not the same number of positions as their are real world. That said, real world often combine positions or “bandbox” anyway.
      The text thing is a pain for controllers too, but many people don’t feel confident enough to speak on the mic.
      VATSIM is a bunch of compromises that are necessary to make it work.
