to add to this imagin then after this said train slamming into you at escape or reentry velocity. your looking at the force of a low end atomic weapon as a battering ram. ouch.

@@Tracks2008 Broadside actually did this in the infamous episode Carnage in C Minor. He transformed from jet into ship midflight and dropped himself onto Devastator, taking the Decepticon out instantly.
This is like a quintessential The Basics episode. It hits all the hallmarks:
-Toy-inaccurate animation model
-Appeared halfway through season 2 without any explanation
- Offlined by a cosmically-powered Starscream
Etc
Not to mention...the HEEAAAAAAD-masters.

Basics on "Offlined by Cosmically Powered Starscream" episode when?
I really loved Cyberverse Astrotrain, and the fact that they weren't afraid to give him a design that wasn't just a tweaked version of his G1 look. That show is criminally underappreciated.
I gotta say, having Astrotrain be a large transformer on par with how Jetfire/Skyfire was made sense being that they were both transport bots.

I love the theory that he was working with Starscream when he said to push the injured decepticons out.
the Decepticons could've pushed on in the battle of Autobot City, they only had a few wounded while the Autobots had at least 3 deaths.

It seems Astrotrain will stay a giant for a while. New Transformers histories are trying to avoid the mass displacement or changing size thing (except for Combiners), but since Astrotrain being Megatron´s transport is kind of his main stick, he will remain giant to keep that working. Not that I mind, I like the characters having a variety of sizes, as long as they stabilize in them.
But wouldn't that mean he would have to SHRINK when he becomes a train?
Weirdly, after appearing in Siege as a giant, Earthrise and Kingdom depicted him as a regular-sized Decepticon.

i have a problem with mass shifting when it crosses the absurd. mainly with soundwave and blaster (but im fine with megatron) mass shifting into small electronics. i have yet to desire a leader class soundwave for my collection (until the recent fans toys release), and i only have legends scaled soundwaves at the moment as a preference. so its cool to see a giant astrotrain as its not so much a stretch of the imagination, and seeing that come from the creators leads me to believe i am not alone in this thinking.
astrotrain was one of my first transformers, and he’s been a favourite ever since. his surprise return in cyberverse was a really great time.
I love the contrast and kind of absurdity of his alt modes.
Big boy Astrotrain vs same scale Sky Lynx would be great.
But then you have Blast Off from the Combaticons who is off scale for a space shuttle and the space shuttle Micromasters who are even smaller. 😆
That mashup of hi-tech and historic alt modes really makes him. They could have leveraged that for some really fun stories.
micromasters (and minicons) are known to be unreasonably small even in-universe every time they happears
and when it comes to combiners, well, size not being a thing always comes up

Astrotrain reminds me that I wish we had more mainstream transformers who had trains as their alternate mode, because there are some cool options for that. Imagine a Decepticon who has a Gustav rail cannon as an alternate mode! That's basically a heavy artillery unit in one Decepticon!

I find it funny that the WFC Trilogy had Astrotrain as both giant in SIEGE and regular-size in Earthrise and Kingdom.
The first Netflix show was a logical mess imo. E.g. there’s no earth behind the entire Earthrise line…
i love how the person who sponsored this episode was called sentinel primes chin. Because I was expecting it to be just sentinel prime but then the last word was added on and started laughing
astrotrain is the best triple changer and in the desgin tho and my fav purple character after tarn-motor master and is good fit for legacy after motor master-tarn
I agree, the design is great and impressive.
Him and Blitzwing work the best out of all the G1 Triple Changers. He edges out ahead slightly by having two near perfect vehicle modes and the irony of a steam engine turning into a space shuttle. However, his weird stubby arms and the fact Blitzwings manages to make the ridiculous tank turret under his jet mode actually look cool lean things in Blitzwings favor...but I love the Space Shuttle and trains.
Astrotrain is number one.
Broadside is definitely the worst, followed by Sandstorm. Octane is terrible to with his terrible legs and awkward truck mode...but I have a soft spot for him...so he edges out Sandstorm.
Sandstorm is almost redeemable if Springer wasn't literally a better version of him released at about the same time. Getting Sandstorm as a kid instead of Springer would be like asking for Optimus Prime and getting Stacks from Gobots instead.
Broadside though... terrible.

I'm so glad that Cyberverse is capable of taking "nobody" characters, and turning them into memorable reimaginings. Like c'mon, a giant Astrotrain? That's perfect for his character, and removes the dumb explanation of "mass shifting"
Gotta love G1 astrotrain's commitment in training a bunch of non-sentient(?) trains to create an army of trains to take over the world, in the episode Triple Takeover....one of my favorite staring the decepticon
The God Gambit is, in my opinion, one of the best episodes of G1, and that part of Triple Takeover where he turns a bunch of trains into his minions was hilarious
Been following this channel for a couple years now, and never really commented. I just wanted to say thank you for reigniting my spark for this franchise. I got in with Beast Wars, and continued through the Unicron trilogy before dropping off. But these lore and fact videos have been fantastic, and I look forward to weekends when I get a new video from you. Please keep up the great work, and I hope that 2022 brings more success to your channel!
Also funny thing: in SIEGE carttoon Astrotrain was a giant but in Earthrise we see him being almost same size as Sideswipe

Did he? His appearance in Siege was mostly in a low down angle. So maybe it confused some viewers. But his appearance in the Netflix show was so brief that it might be the case.

Astrotrain is one of the few Transformers I’ve seen that has used his mass displacement ability outside of his vehicle modes. Kind of reminds me of giant man and I like it.
I love how a lot of times, his head has 'snoopy hat' colours and design.
My dad has the original Astrotrain toy! It's kinda hard to transform because it's a bit beat up, but it still has the thermal insignia!
Astrotrain was one of my first G1 toys. And I loved his and Dead End’s “bickering lovers” relationship in Cyberverse.
Ah, the triumphant return of being offline by cosmically-powered Starscream.
I always theorized ( like Soundwave) AstroTrain had a size compression ability that could expand his body( and in this case) support transport of good and allies. This would mean his body was largely thick in robot mode which gave him great armor, but thinned in train or shuttle mode.
The Dreameave profile series of comics had this idea for many of the size changing Transformers. The Autobot triple changer, Broadside was presented as Astrotrain’s counterpart in this respect.
@@Tracks2008 I'm just referring to the compression of his huge size as a mass former as described in Dreamwaves data books. I'm familiar with here cybertronians abilities; Astrotrain was just another exception like Soundwave.

I first learned about Astrotrain through Angry Birds Transformers as he’s the main base in that game, i always loved his transformation from train to spaceshuttle and i even built him a few times in minecraft just because why not
Of all (what few there have been) the Astrotrain's to have popped up in this franchise's growth and expansion, easily the biggest standout is the G1 version. He went through some really fun and often stupid stories that helped his character stand out and not to mention the way he sounded was something oddly unique that feels like such a default voice for the character, thanks to Jack Angel he managed to make Astrotrain sound in such a way that it's almost become part of who he is. As for Cyberverse Astrotrain, I love how the character is literally on the same level in size as Omega Supreme that for Cyberverse he was the Decepticons answer to Omega that you almost wish he showed up to fight Astrotrain.
But it's great that he's had some involvement and hasn't phased out completely as there's nothing more kickass than a "space train".

In Transformers Dark of the Moon Astrotrain does appear into small scenes specifically in his trained form in the background, it has to be inferred that it is him because it was previously said that all trains in the vicinity have been disabled yet you can still see one functioning.
That doesn't mean it's Astrotrain. Could be another Decepticon. Or a movie mistake.
The same for 'The Astrotrain' that shows up in the Hearts of Steel spinoffs. Never seen outside of the suped up train mode, and never clear if it's an actual transformer or just 'The Astrotrain' is a name.

As well as his giant form I always saw his train mode as the perfect frontal assault like a battering ram to a castle wall using the coal car as a troop dropoff while he continues plowing through then switching to shuttle mode for a blitz escape

it may be very little and almost unheard of, but my favourite cameo is when he just placidly happeras in the starting menu from WoC
both him and cosmos are only there for a bit in veicle mode, but are the only ones that definetivelly are those unique charathers, in contrast to all the other drones that more commonly pass
I think it is worth a mention that in the IDW universe, the tripplechangers used to be bigshots back before the war. they were the Senate guards or something and greatly feard and respected by their fellow dual mode bretheren.

Astrotrain is a model deceptincon soldier. Loyal, powerful, with questionable morals and a lot of firepower to back up his master's will. Great character with unique design and alt modes. Unsung hero of decepticons. Jettison some weight!

I remember when I was little and watched the original Transformers movie, I was reading Ant man and when the Decepticons ran aboard Astrotrain in his train form yet he was the same size a moment ago as all the other Decepticons, I reached the conclusion that Astrotrain has Ant/Giant mans ability. I think that would be a pretty cool Transformer ability if it was really true :P
If you haven't heard this name in The Basics yet, Dead End is a member of the Combiner team, the Stunticons.

When some people think on Astrotrain, they mostly think of his 19th century steam locomotive mode, and to be honest, I can't say I don't too.
Astrotrain started the concept of train transformers, more or less, specially with the Trainbots from The Headmasters, I think? Nevermind, even though he was named Astrotrain and not only Train, his train mode easily differes more than the other, I don't know if it's because he's just a train, or an old school british engine, but he does look awesome when he is. I would kill to get a full figure of a Transformers just having a train mode.
When it's about his astroforce, he always makes me laugh "Repeat after me, we will serve Astrotrain from now on as our lord and savior" *_"H O N K"_*
Once again, Steam Engines Transformers are underrated, and there is no other that represents it more than Astrotrain.
... And OpThomas Prime and his combined forms too, but he's not canon so anyways.
I find it sad how he progressively loses his train mode, in Armada it's not, in Titans Returns it doesn't look like a train, and in Cyberverse, well, he's a "triple changer" but only shows off his rocket mode.
Can't Astrotrain have an alternate mode like Tracks? The blue autobt had a stunning car mode which could also become a plane without neccesarily coming out of it, Astrotrain could easily just scan some kind of flying train or something, I know it doesn't exists, but it could actually work in cartoon.
Like, Galaxy Express 999, if Transformers ever gets a crossover with them which is impossible nowadays, I feel like Astrotrain should be the main antagonist, and not Megatron, with him scanning wether 999 or a Space Defense Force one, like Big One (Does anybody remember Galaxy Railways?), It would make justice to the name, rather than being a Triple Changer with a rocket mode and a train mode, he would be an iconic, Flying Steam Engine, as the plot twist of the comic/cartoon/film

There was an episode where Astrotrain took over some trains and programmed them to be serve him but the trains didn't even transform also they were bound to the train tracks.. that would've been a good opportunity for Hasbro to make recolor train decepticons just like the seekers
Astrotrain is easily my favorite triple changer and favorite decepticon, not counting Nemesis Prime. Good video Chris. Though one thing you missed was talking about his voice. It sounded like he had two voices speaking at the same time, kind of like a split personality or broken voice box.
i'm binging the entire basics right now and you have no idea how much my soul left my body when i finally heard once again about being offlined by a cosmically powered starscream. we had gone for so long without it i had begun to feel hope again

Though much newer WFC Astrotrain is my must have, though bites that my local retails for some bloody reason can't or won't sell WFC Leader Class selection.

One of the great strenghts of Transformers G1 all characters had great characters , and personality . For kids it was perfect as the decepticons where as loved as the autobots . and splinter factions with a rebelious streak like the dinobots and insecticons.
PS the trains where part of the japanese transformers series . that coubd be a combiner.
I honestly like the giant robot mode direction media is going with him. I think it could lend to him getting more spotlight attention.

I always figured in the original cartoon Astrotrain was recovered with the rest of the new decepticons when The Nemesis was uncovered in the episode "Microbots." If you remember we really only saw Megatron take the Heart of Cybertron to turbocharge himself but I imagine after that he and his forces returned to reclaim the rest of the crew that had been left in stasis after the crash like they had all been on The Ark
G1 Astrotrain my favourite version cuz of his iconic voice but I do like the idea of him being a giant which makes more sense for his alt modes in today's Transformers media.
I'm surprised Chris didn't mention on how astrotrain in g1 voice sounded all echo and how it sounds like 2 people are talking I always wondered how they did that.
They probably just had the actor do two takes of the lines, then added some reverb and played the tracks in synch, the slight variations in delivery would give that effect (much the same as how a lot of singers will do when recording vocals)

I have a Mandela effect with Astrotrain, as a kid I remembered a G1 episode where he was huge and Megatron didn't shrink, so Astrotrain was the only one who could wield him.
I love how at 2:53 Astrotrain's transformation from train to shuttle is toy accurate, so he flips upside down when he transforms

Honestly I just love how new series I’ve just decided “yeah he’s just big” and give the mass changing or rearranging of armor plating answers that they did in G1, because it’s just hilarious to see this guy act like a normal bot but what is 2 to 5 times bigger than his comrades.
I'm very interested in seeing tha basics on Jhiaxus, you mentioned him already so many times that I think it would be nice.
I always hated the fact that somehow Astrotrain fell threw the cracks because Hasbro didn't think kids would like trains and kids would not like the Astrotrain figure seeing as it has a train mode. If kids can accept Astrotrain then it should have given Hasbro the reason to import the Trainbots. 🙄
