Hi Sonya!! It's so good to see you here!! :) Thank you very much for your always such kind words and encouragement! I wish you all the best and lots of beautiful music making!
I’ve discovered two things that are really tough to practice slowly. Learning Chopin’s Nocturne 2 (opus 9, no. 2) and Bach’s Marche (from Magdalena’s notebook). Very hard to do slurs and trills slowly!
Hi Clash, performers choose to play in specific positions for musical and technical reasons. In this particular Bach passages, there are two voices. One with open E (secondary voice)and the other fingered notes(primary voice). To make clearly different tone colour from the open E notes(secondary voice), I personally chose to play other notes (primary voice) in high positions on D and A string. I also chose to play this passage in high positions for technical reasons, as the string crossings over 3 strings can be simpler to manage than playing over 2 strings with irregular repetitions which can be confusing. There can be many ways playing the same music, as it is totally up to the performer, according to her/his musical and technical preferences. I hope this answers your question. Happy practising!
Thank you also John. If you are interested in live online lessons with me, please send me an email to "topiaviolins@gmail.com". Thank you and happy practising!
What exercises can I use to develop the right finger pressure from the beginning? I don’t want to accidentally do it the wrong way, and develop a bad habit that needs to be fixed. What is the perfect way to develop fingerboard touch from the very start?
Hi T, there are many great technical books to develop a relaxed reliable LH techniques. Sevcik and Schradieck have many great exercises in a nice progression. I love your videos! I was wondering whether you have any tips on playing Bach's Solo Partita No.3 Gavotte Section E where the second finger need to play the A and E string at the same time. Thank you
Thank you very much Yau. Playing with the same finger over 2 strings (playing 5th) can be very challenging as it feels physically awkward. Great Wonder Joy. Please, with all my heart and my infinite passion for the violin, I am lucky enough to have a great ear for music, as well as playing by natural instinct, however, probably, I have an anatomical defect in my fingers and, despite having understood the melodic and polyphonic line, regarding Paganini's Primo Capriccio, I can't perform it. I feel a great discomfort, because I have the problem of incorrect finger support, immediately, on the first starting chord. Forgive me for the inconvenience Joy. You are always an unreachable teacher. Thank you very much. With the ever lively hope of seeing and hearing from you soon here in Perugia. Thanks again with all my heart
Hi Claudio, Thank you for your kind words. Paganini caprice no.1 has lots of extended left fingers which required very flexible left hand frame. And you are not alone to feel much discomfort with this piece. I suggest that you work with chords without much extension, allowing your left hand to build flexibility then later come back to this Paganini to give another try. I hope you can try and succeed. Happy practising Claudio!
@@JoyLeeViolin Hello Dear Great Joy. Thank you infinitely. Yes , you are ABSOLUTELY right . I must have more pacient , because I feel very much problem with my index left , in the second chord expecially, when I Press 2 notes in the same height . I have infinite fantasy. Thank you so much immensely with all my infinite respect and esteem and my Heart. You are so SPECIAL and Great
Thank you also Richard. There are different opinions about using vibrato in baroque pieces. I believe one should explore every possible tools to make the music beautiful including the vibrato which matches the music ( not overly wide romantic vibrato, of course). I hope you can try! Happy music making!

Hi Greg, in my opinion as long as one uses a vibrato which matches well with Bach or any other baroque music and make it beautiful, it is worth using it. I hope you can try it on your Bach Partita. Happy music making!
My biggest problem trying to play fast is my brain. Even if I take just a millisecond to remember what the next note is gonna be, I'm out. So I feel like you need to memorize it to a subconcious level to even stand a chance. And that's a point I have never gotten to yet 😆
Hi Lya, you have a good point, every things starts in our brain first. If you try to memorize smaller section (2-4 measures, not the entire piece), it might be easier. I hope you can try. Happy practising!

My question since D string and A string doesn't have ledger lines how can you tell when to play on 2nd 3nd and 4th positions?

Thank you maam. Any way this piece is baroque so no need of vibrato😊😊

A wise man once said:
if thy play slowly, thy can play quickly
-what my brain told me to comment at 3 am
Bach likely never considered left hand vibrato? I have to force myself to learn a fast Bach partita. Then I never forget it, but rarely play it.
