The performance and features of that thing is amazing for the price. I doubt reliability will be any different than the KTM's that have been made in Austria recently. CFMOTO might even be an improvement. Also, I know you got the weight figure online (I saw the same figure), but it's a typo, the weight should be the same as the current 890 which is 470 lbs (213 kg) wet. There is no reason it would be any lighter. The 790 and 890 engines are the same weight.
You are correct about the weight. KTM’s own website says 438 lbs (199 kg) is the DRY weight. Also, I trust a CFMoto made KTM more than an Austrian made KTM.
213kg wet is still not bad especially if it has those low tanks on either side (don't know if this does). Should feel pretty light. Regarding price, compared to the Transalp's $1000 saving. The fact that this comes with CC is worth that grand to me already. If you can stomach that insect face ( I can't) then this should be on top of your list.
Ian I would love to see you weigh this bike as its kinda impossible for 19 liters of fuel, 3 of oil and about 2 quarts of coolant to weigh only 14 kilograms…
Ian made it sound like it came standard but after checking on the website it is listed as an OPTION. So you can have it but it cost extra@@Adventure_blac
Reliability is not a question I owned a 790 R back when they were made in Austria and it was constantly in the shop. I sold it and bought a T7 and couldn’t be happier about the trade!
890-R owner here. At this point the probably the biggest worry about the older 790 and 890 ADVs is the cam issues. Too many reports of prematurely worn cams and followers. Which is a big deal. I'm about to pull the top off mine at ~8k miles as part of my spring prep to inspect and check cam wear, way, way before it is scheduled just because of the reports I've seen. Other than that mine has been pretty bulletproof. It is a full on giggle to romp on.
My 790 has about 20k miles. I inspected the cams at the valve inspection around 15k miles and no issues. I don’t think that problem is as widespread as some would have you think.
My 790 R needed new valves, followers, cams at 31,000km after 6 oil changes. If you think there isnt many cases I suggest you visit KTM Failed Camshafts
I’ve got an original 2019 790 Austrian made adventure s and it has been perfectly reliable for 16k miles. I’ve changed tires and oil. No problems as a daily commuter. Not comfortable at highway speeds for long distances with the stock screen, but I love it and not looking to get rid of it. Fun bike. Yes! It’s been a workhorse and carves up the twisties and damn good off road.
From my personal experience KTM is not worth the hassle. I loved my 790 Adventure R but it was so unreliable it defeated the purpose of an adventure bike. Months and months of troubleshooting the same handful of issues over and over from 4 different dealerships/repair shops. Direct contact with KTM. They can't even diagnose and fix their own bikes. The personality of the bike/engine and the features for the price are absolutely amazing. If you luck out and get a reliable one. Awesome! I hope everyone does but my experience with KTM has turned me off the brand forever.
Have a 890r and love it! No issues so far, knock knock on wood. Had several KTM dirt bikes in the past as did my boys and buddies. Ready to Race! They rule Thanks for the vids. Live close by and hope to see you out there! Cheers
2023 Ibex 800T owner. Did all the maintenance myself so far. Just under 3k miles and changed the oil twice with minimal effort. I have had zero issues so far on the bike the engine has grunt to it for sure. obviously time will tell all things but I am sure having a blast so far. avg 39mpg too and that is not being easy on it.
Hit about 3k miles on mine recently. Have had it on lots of trails, limited issues. Only changes I've made is hand guards, and a couple of NiceCNC accessories. Great fun, very good offroad, the looks grow on you, and I quite like how it sounds...converted!
I veered from a Transalp in the last minute and got a 2023 new 790adv (black). And boy am I glad. Dunno if you mentioned it, but this bike also has tubless tires, and a steering dampener not to mention cruise control. I've ridden it 1000 miles, no issues. Service intervals are huge (15,000km's), and service price is absolutely normal. And the stock bash plate and hand guards are surprisingly sturdy enough that don't need replacing unless you're a serious off-roader. And the best part about reliability issues, I heard in more than 1 youtube video that even a pro rider cannot tell the difference between a Chinese built one and an Austrian built one. In fact, they have placed serious original Austrian KTM managers in the China factory to make sure everything is done as per KTM's guidelines. Anyone who's had issues has to be asked the question what model their bike is. Coz the 2023 is certainly better in my opinion than the older built ones. It's extremely fun, torky with enough power and wants to be ridden like you stole it! Just what the doctor ordered! It doesn't even require protection bars coz of the dual low tanks. The only thing I'd like to add to it are heated grips and a Remus exhaust since the original sound is a little whimpy.
The problem has either been Austrian build standards, and/or poor engineering. I think the Chinese manufacture will answer at least one of those questions.
I'm confused. The 790 was reintroduced in 2024 so how can you be talking about a 2023 790? Perhaps the 2023 790 has been available outside of the United States?
Hey Ben - always great to see you do bike reviews. It’s interesting to see how your view of brands change over time. I’d say some of the podcast style videos aren’t my favorite, and I miss some of the authenticity of older motocamping videos. I know things change as you become more familiar, a better rider, but I can’t help but feel different as of late with some videos. You’re becoming a better rider, but what caught me and a lot of others viewers is how approachable you are from new riders. As a longtime viewer, could you curb your approach to incorporate more day-in-the-life of a motocamping goofball for experienced riders appreciating a true internet riding buddy?
I had the original 790. Was a good bike but did have issues. The upper rad hose leaked and almost toasted the motor second ride out. The Fuel gauge stopped working in the first 500 miles, the bike was crazy lean and you had to start it about 5 times when cold before it would idle. I did not have the rear shock breakage issues. The dash was to complicated and I hated resetting everything all the time. Overall it was a good bike. I moved on to a SWM Superdual (650 DS) because I wanted more off road ability and less of the electronics. This has ABS but I even pulled the fuse on that. I'm a very experienced rider with over 4 decades of continuous riding, I don't want ABS and it has almost killed me off road a few times. And as unicorn as that bike is I have had zero issues (well OK a loose ground wire the dealer missed when installing). Its based on the old Husky TE630 and has been a fantastic bike for my needs. The best 50/50 DS bike I could find and does exactly that. 85mph all day long on the tarmac or exploring single track, it does it all and had been a great partner. I'm recently retired (early) and have been logging miles all over western USA. rode so much of California this last 6 months and in Hollister / Morgan Hill area now. So fun.
@@MotoCampAdv Pretty small dealer network. I picked mine up in Idaho, drove from Washington to pick it up and then drove straight to the Giant Loop Rally in Oregon. I actually just got another SWM, a RS300R based on the old husky TE310 and wow what a good trail bike.
With my Tuareg, the ABS is assigned to whatever mode you set it to. Even after removing the battery. If you set your off-road mode to have the ABS turned off it'll stay off until you change it.
Wanting to buy an Aprilia 660 but on the fence due to its reliability reputation, in your experience, has it been reliable or lots of glitches along the way?✌️
@turbolag5107 On my gsxr 1000 I had 40000 km before I had one minor issue, If you don't mind me asking what were your little issues you had with this Aprilia,Thanks.
Almost 6k kilometers on mine, first bike I ever owned and glad I chose it! Regarding reliability, i had a leak from radiator hose around 5k km and it was solve under warranty in one day.
Picked my 790 up from dealer with no miles. Shock that the tank was all but empty. Clutch was way out of adjustment and the clutch lever was smashing into the switch gear because it was set to far forward. Ok no big deal but damn. Went home made all the adjustments. Briefly went over the bike looking for more issues. Fun ride home. We’ll see how it goes from here. Cheers 🍻
2022 890 Adventure S, with about 6,000 miles, drove it from Oregon to Arizona and back. It was fantastic the entire way. It could use another gear when cruising on Hwy's with a 80mph speed limit. As for issues, I had a issue with the brake light sensor right away. The sensor is not a mechanical switch, but a pressure sensor within the brake fluid. It would get stuck and my brake light would remain on, and my cruise control would work. A couple of trips to the dealership and they swapped out the parts. No issues since. All in all very happy with the bike.
I was just making the decision on what bike I’m going to buy and I just today decided after a long drawn out debate to pick up the 790 and I looked at your channel as always and you are testing it . If that isn’t a sign, I don’t know what is!!!! Please get this bike and do a long term test . I would love to see it. Thanks bro 👍😎
I very much enjoyed your review but was a bit disappointed that you didn’t provide much comparison to your seat time on the closely related Norden 901 including reliably experience.
Suzuki, more powerful at medium engine speeds, better suspension, easier to replace the air filter, bolted subframe, TC works in off-road (on Honda none of the above)
I bought the 23, 890 S but if the 790 was available, I probably would’ve got that. So much fun! Zero issues! One thing I noticed about the engine is that that rattling sound gets better after it’s broken in. So does the performance. Did I say it was fun? so much fun!
First time I started the then new original 790 I shut it off and called a friend with one to ask about the motor sound as it sounded like it was going to explode. He said yep, that's how they sound... wow, OK.
@@anxiousappliance Oh they make them. Pretty sure KTM only sells the 790 is US market now though. Ian from Big Rock Moto got his hands one one 4-5 month ago. Got a bunch of videos of it on his channel.
@@4tech69 the 890 is dead for 2024 in the states . Only the 890r will be available in the states for 2024 as well as the 790. 890 still availible as a 2023
Cfmoto builds 890 motor for ktm. I own a 2023 ktm 890 adventure base model. And I absolutely love mine and it has been completely reliable for the first year that I have owned it.
Great video Ben and I think you should get one for a long term test. I have been considering a Transalp but everywhere around me is sold out of them and they don't know if they will be getting more from Honda. I've been seriously considering the 790 adventure instead of the Transalp. I haven't really been that much of a KTM fan due to their high price but with this one being set so affordable, I think it's definitely worth a look and possibly buy it.
I have a 2021 890 r, I upgraded from the old 790 because I needed the ground clearance when I ride in deep ruts in sand. The 790 was a good bike till the clutch went out, I replaced the clutch and the new one from tusk was too big for the basket but I didn't find this out till after the bike sent brand new clutch pack material through the cylinder head. So the bike grenaded itself and I upgrade to a brand new 890r, why stay with KTM? It's worth the risk of maintenance issues because the bike is so friggin good. The oow center of gravity, the aftermarket, how easy it is to ride with my friends who gave true dual sports in the ohv park. The bike is so good I bought an 890 s for my friend as well! The old 790 had oil circulation issues but the 2021+ bikes are great. Just buy the 5 year warranty for the electronics and engine as a precaution. But I have 8,000 miles on my 890 r and it's been a dream, dropped it countless times, had the radiator clogged with grass clippings for a whole trip before I could clean them out, taken it on single track, jumps, deep sand, and hill climbs, just no rocks since I'm in Florida. Now if you have the ability to be close to the trails and adv bike isn't as good as a dual sport, but when you have to ride an hour to get off road, the KTM is a nice place to be the whole time
Real fun to watch this video! I especially love your laughs - you've got caught by the bike at the very first minute, weren't you? 😉😁 Just allow me one lesser critique - the perspective from the X3 makes the bike look like a moped desperately trying to get rid of its rider 😉 When I bought my 690 in 22, I also eyed the twin as I planned a long trip off-tarmac (which I did with the 690). I opted for the thumper not only because of the price tag (at that time) but chiefly because of weight and the comparably limited exposure of plastics towards the ground to the occasional drop. At least the latter still applies, but were I in the same situation as I was in 21/22, I'd have a hard time deciding. Fun fact, I managed to dent the rear side panel by dropping the bike - didn't even know this was possible...
Thoughts on the 390 adv as a first time bike for someone wanting a good bike for commuting and trail riding up to some back country roads and alpine lakes?
What really interests me in the KTM designs is the under-slung fuel tank to lower the center of gravity. I've never ridden one myself, but in theory and from watching a few reviews on them the effect of that sounds pretty neat.
I had a 2020 790, it was an awesome bike and very fun to ride, there are few motorcycles that handle both street and off road equally as well. the only issue i had was the ergonomics, i found it uncomfortable for long rides and i even tried different seats, otherwise i miss riding it.
had the same reaction to the first KTM I rode. my friends 500... I was a bit of a hater before. now I have a 250 EXC-F and I have never been happier hahaha
I just bought one and I love it! I traded in my KTM 390 Adventure for this one. Have signed up for a 3 day adventure bike training event at the end of July. Going to be fun!
Love the non-scripted review & the excitement... Great Job..... Question I post is, why buy this over the Tenere 700, the Tenere allegedly is more reliable, more dealer support? Is the KTM 790 so much more fun to ride that you're will to overlook those things? Thanks
9:50 R and "higher spec" versions in general is not to make them more capable or ride faster. Better suspension means mostly better comfort, less fatigue, better handling, better overall experience. Its common misconception about suspension i hear all the time. Id choose R even if i would ride like grandma to church and still would benefit from more suspension travel. Benefit of base version is lower bike therefore lower CoG Cheers
Thanks for this video. I have a 2020 KTM 790 ADV R with ~8k mostly off-road miles and have had zero issues so far. I still absolutely love it and have it set up perfectly for my style of riding. I saw the new 790 and 890 Rally at my local KTM dealer, temping but I'll stick with my 790 for a little longer. Maybe an 890 Rally in my future. So happy to see how well your channel is doing, you make great content!
What a great bike! I bought a 2017 1290 SAR ne woff the floor and sold it 5 months later. It was the funnest bike I have ever ridden and I miss it daily, but there was always something wrong with it, and it almost stranded me several times due to the bike suddenly disliking the fob or refusing to go through the startup process. There were always leaks or loose bolts. The fitting for the fuels lines that went into the tank kept leaking. The bluetooth never worked. For a 18k bike, I expected it to work. It didnt. But when it did, it was the best bike I have ever ridden
Well, the answer is yes, get the 790. I test rode five 1200 GS bikes years ago, and then by accident tried a KTM 1090 R and was blown away. Put 32k miles on that bike, and now I have a KTM 690 R, 790 R and 1290 Superduke GT. None have had reliability issues (my F750GS was terribly unreliable by comparison), and in the end FUN outweighs all other factors anyway. As long as any issues are smallish, fun is always more important and needed.
It's hard to sell another KTM to someone after their current KTM has had cam/follower,valve failure at 30,000 km. Only after you've been without your bike for 4 months waiting for repairs will you understand.
Thank you Ben for disclaiming the CF Moto lineage right out front. We sell CF Moto four wheel products at our dealership and have seen an incredible come up from the brand in terms of vehicles/accessories/innovation, but have yet to see the reliability follow that trend. I'm sure it will eventually get there, especially with the collaborations from the likes of KTM and Yamaha. I'm just not prepared to put my money down on any KTM that has a VIN starting with the letter "L". I also feel like I've talked to enough KTM owners through the years that wouldn't buy one solely because of the CF Moto manufacturing aspect, like it's the red headed step child of a KTM. I think they have an uphill battle with their typical customer base, but if they can get passed that, this bike will be a winner!
yeah it's kind of a weird segment for them to be targeting but I guess they started going for newer riders with the 390 so this is just continuing the trend by targeting the budget conscious average rider, as well.
I personally feel like KTMs are the forbidden fruit/the girl your mom warned you about. you should TOTALLY buy this and ride it hard to see for yourself how reliable it is.
Get one!! Would be a great comparison and interesting if any reliability issues crop up!! I bought a 23 890 Adventure from Matt at Power Motorsports last May. 7,500 miles on the clock with one minor issue (coolant leak) which was fixed under warranty by Power. I laugh maniacally when I ride it ! Lots of gravel, some two tracks, and section 5 of the ORBDR so far. Arctic Ocean and Alaska planned this summer. A wing on the windshield is just the ticket, fyi.
I'm a honda fan like you. Love the reliability and overall build and ride of it. I'm also not excited to buy anything Chinese right now (or ever), I wish we could support a good American manufacturing. But man, this bike is going to break me. It is definitely a do it all bike, fully loaded and affordable. And I know it has massive reliability issues. Not only the small ones but massive engines burning out ones...but I might want to eat that frog and go have as much fun as possible for a few years.
I think the best comparison here is actually the Tuareg 660, that is also an amazingly capable mid-sized ADV that weighs about 430 lbs and has all the modes on the fly, including an off road mode that automatically turns off the ABS and can be switched while riding it. @bigrockmoto
I've been waiting to see if you would do a review on this. I originally bought an africa twin to start on, and that was a big mistake. I sold that and have Been looking at this one over say a DR650 or KLR650 to start again.
I had the original Africa Twin, hated it. Well OK, it was a good street bike. Then got the original KTM 790, was good, better than the AT. Then I sold it and got the SWM Superdual 650 single cylinder DS bike (updated older husky TE630) and never looked back. A single cylinder 650ish bike allows you to do so much more exploring. Most of these "ADV" bikes are glorified street bikes. It all depends on what you are looking to do. A decked out DRZ650 or XR650L is a great platform to do anything from.
@Motosportz for me the issue is balancing weight and seat height (I'm short) with on road performance. As much as I say I'm going to be carving trails the whole time, I'll be on a highway for a couple hours just to get to the trailhead. To me, this bike offers both. Whereas something like a DR650 will be great to toss around on a trail, and way easier to learn offroading on, it will be uncomfortable to deal with consistently on the commute to the trail.
@@ckxtreme4338 I ride my SWM Superdual (650 single DS bike) hundreds of miles on pavement. Not an issue. will lope along at 85mph all day getting 55 mpg. Has a good stock windscreen and hand guards making it ever bit as comfy as my 790 was. It has a low seat height, smooth powerful motor and 230 plus range. For me, it checks off all the boxes. I wanted a modern DRZ/KLR/XR-L and that's what this is.
As someone familiar with Asian manufacturing, I want to share my experience with China. China’s problem is NOT its capability. China already has top-class manufacturing ability. DJI or Foxconn(Taiwan HQ, but most assets in Mainland China) are prime examples. China’s real struggle is its mentality that “Gotta make it cheaper, so let’s cut every corner whenever possible” - QC/Consistency issue. It’s very common for a Chinese company to show an excellent sample to get a deal and then degrade quickly. Modern Japanese companies’ strength is their conservative QC process. (Ironically, this has become its weakness, too; innovation is too slow, and the cost is not competitive) CF Moto has something to prove at this introductory stage and has the ambition. So, there is a higher chance that CF Moto actually delivers a really good one, even sacrificing its profit for this model. 790 has a chance to be a rare 😂 KTM example for good reliability. In fact, this model has been out there except in the US for more than a year without major complaints. Also in general, I don’t know why or how, but KTM’s reliability has become notably improved after the late 21-22. (this might be a coincidence, but it is still interesting) I think 790 is worth a shot. I wish Yamaha would improve T7 a lot to compete, especially its top-heavy weight and overall diet.
Definitely would like to see some KTM content! It could be a great long term compare to your Transalp and at the end of a year or so you could always sell one.
That was a fun review. I looked over a 790 Duke in the dealer last year and the quality looked as good as any Japanese bike. China is about to become a huge player in the motorcycle market.
A lot of people in the US don't realise that the models Cfmoto brought out in 2016, which is now more than half a decade ago, were almost up to Japanese quality. Like, really close. They didn't get them but we did in Aus and it was almost a shock when I went to see the new models. Now they're hitting the US market I'd imagine the quality has to be really really good now
You should absolutely do a good long time review of one. I want to see how long before you are reminded why you don’t own one. I was an auto mechanic for many years. My view on European (mostly German) vehicles is they’re like race cars. When they’re working, they’re awesome. But like race cars, they need a lot of work and parts and maintenance is expensive and a pain. This applies to motorcycles too. I’ve had two Triumphs and a Husaburg/Husky. I now own a Honda. I tell people I’d own one if it’s not my only bike. I’ll need my Japanese bike while my other one’s in the shop or waiting for f’ing parts to ship across the pond.
Good video Man, I don't know how you shot the video along side while riding. I have to say it , there is absolutely no way I will ever buy or ride a bike made in China, period.. They are not our friends. I currently own a Suzuki DRZ400, Suzuki DL1000, BMW 1200GSA, BMW RT1200 and a Harley Road King. Love them all!
Looks and sounds good. little bit of a Zack Courts giggle when spinning the wheel. appreciated. Did you see spite just do a 600 mile on the NK 800? same motor. he is having a blast on it.
I have a 2021 890 and i have never had a single problem. I have a new FTR that will divide the riding time, but i got the 890 new and so far… not a single issue. Hope this isnt the year that i eat my words.. haha
Hi Ben, thanks for all you do to help this 74 year old guy decide which ADV bike to get since I sold my street bike! So many small/mid-size choices: KTM 390, KTM 790, Honda Translap, Royal Enfield 450 Himalayan (the four that interest me the most) and others. My question is the Honda looks well suited and at a good price point but needs an engine guard and crash bars immediately if I play in the dirt. Until all the dust settles how much additional investment MUST be done for each of the bikes I mentioned to be ready for ADV riding? I can live without the super niceties like cruise control (although for the future would be nice) as well as any other personal desired accessories. I just feel the bare necessities needed for each bike really has to be reflected in the final price point for my decision. Then I must look at local dealership support, how they ""feel" to me, dependability, etc. I really enjoy what you do, keep it up.
I ride the old 790 Adventure R and I absolutely love the bike, however it's quite heavy to lift if you drop it when offroading. That might be an argument in favour of the 390. Performance wise though, it's an amazing bike.
Apparently KTM is determined to not send one of these to my local dealer. He's got two 890 R's on the floor but no base models and no 790s. And I'm interested in the 790 or the Honda trans alp.
@@MotoCampAdv there's one sitting at my local Honda dealer I've already been in there chatting it up and have a sheet with all the figures. That's 790s calling my name just as hard though and I don't have to make a snap decision, I'll probably have to sell my Triumph to make the whole thing work. How do you like your Honda? I did a day loop last fall through most of my regional dealers. Looking at this Suzuki the Honda and the Yamaha and the Honda really felt comfortable.
Probably. This is better with the low tanks and it's lighter I think. Suspension is better too I think. But the IBEX looks better, god I hate KTM styling
We have the same wired body dimensions. 5 10 with a 30 inseam plus i have shorter arms so i can't always reach the gerund, and I'm hunched over to reach the bars lol
Question, if you haven’t had any personal long term experience with the Aprilia Tuareg how can you speak to reliability? The early models had oil leaks due to bad seals and a batch of fuel senders were bad, but for a brand new model that’s really minimal stuff that’s warrantied. I’ve got a 22’ Tuareg with 3000 miles and it’s going strong.
Every bike is possible is you respect the limits and is responsible. A mc can easily get you killed, even a 300cc. But with more power and weight, space for errors are tight. So if you really need to respect it.
I’m looking to get this bike, the black one for sure. I’m getting older. Don’t need the more advance suspension on the 890. This new 790 will more than suffice for the light off-road I’ll do. Give my 23’ KLR to my son. 😂

Ah, the anxiety!! I ride with a guy that went from the 390 adv to the 890 adv r. That thing is crazy fast. He just wheelies non stop.
My 790 has about 20k miles. I inspected the cams at the valve inspection around 15k miles and no issues. I don’t think that problem is as widespread as some would have you think.
8k miles to be worried about cams? Jeez, no thanks. I've never considered cams to be a wear item on Japanese bikes
Unless you’re losing power performance or excess noise I wouldn’t worry about it.
My 790 R needed new valves, followers, cams at 31,000km after 6 oil changes.
If you think there isnt many cases I suggest you visit
KTM Failed Camshafts
Apparnetly these are better than the old ones by all current reports
I get 47 on mine. No one does a good review on our 800 T. A much better windshield and tires ans away we go. I hope Ben will do a review on it.
Hit about 3k miles on mine recently. Have had it on lots of trails, limited issues. Only changes I've made is hand guards, and a couple of NiceCNC accessories. Great fun, very good offroad, the looks grow on you, and I quite like how it sounds...converted!
I just watched a ktm fan get born an I’m here for it
I love my 2023 KTM 890 Adventure S and have had zero problems with it in 6000 miles. KTM is awesome!!!
Come back a year from now and tell us about your experience.
@@MotoCampAdv Sure thing. Keep in mind that the re-birth of this bike is not the same as the previous problematic ones.
Yeah, I'd consider it a "next gen", even over the 890. They've obviously fixed things like the engine stalling issue on start, for example.
I'll never forget my first test ride on my 990 Adventure! That oil that KTM recommends? It has 30% adrenaline additive in it.
So fun.
Those are cool bikes . Never seen one here in America though
I test rode the 890 Adventure and man was I impressed.
I’d like to see you try the Cfmoto ibex 450
With my Tuareg, the ABS is assigned to whatever mode you set it to. Even after removing the battery. If you set your off-road mode to have the ABS turned off it'll stay off until you change it.
That is nice. More manufacturers should do that.
Wanting to buy an Aprilia 660 but on the fence due to its reliability reputation, in your experience, has it been reliable or lots of glitches along the way?✌️
@@gsxrkz I haven't had any major problems with it.
Thanks and long term review would be just great. It will be a chance to compare it with Transalp/Tenere/800DE/Tuareg in middle weight category.
I want a head-to-head comparison between the 790 and the Transalp.
Pointless, this thing absolutely blows the transalp away in ALL aspects
I was just making the decision on what bike I’m going to buy and I just today decided after a long drawn out debate to pick up the 790 and I looked at your channel as always and you are testing it . If that isn’t a sign, I don’t know what is!!!! Please get this bike and do a long term test . I would love to see it. Thanks bro 👍😎
Id do some more searching on TH-cam of the 790 it's been out in other parts of the world since 2023
Is it a fun bike dude? 😂🤣 That was hilarious! Great to see ya having a very fun time!
LOL. I was like "Dude, I know that place!" then you said Matt and I knew immediately. So cool. Spent many hours in that parking lot.
I very much enjoyed your review but was a bit disappointed that you didn’t provide much comparison to your seat time on the closely related Norden 901 including reliably experience.
This was a test ride, not a review or a comparison.
I think I’ll take the transalp or new Suzuki 800 for sure.
Yep
Good luck with changing flat tyre somewhere on the road.😢
@@Milan-yw6rm flat tire will be the least of the problems you're gonna face with a KTM
Suzuki, more powerful at medium engine speeds, better suspension, easier to replace the air filter, bolted subframe, TC works in off-road (on Honda none of the above)
I think the suzuki is the way to go I really love the Aprilia but the reliability is very questionable..
He said yep, that's how they sound... wow, OK.
Maybe that's why they have 3 oil filters 🤔
It's got a weird firing order@@Motosportz
They still make the 890 Adventure and it's got adjustable suspension now. That front ABS was doing exactly what it should in off road mode.
If they still make it, they don't sell it in America any more.
Only the 890r will be available in the states for 2024 as well as the 790. 890 still availible as a 2023
@@4tech69 Someone mentioned it might be replace3d by a 990, which makes a lot of sense.
OK, we know you end up with one. I'm looking forward to the comparison to the Transalp. Thanks Ben!
Welcome to the dark side. Nice review Ben. I think you should compare
Hello,
Do you think they solved the heat problem coming from the Cat that you can feel on the 890 ktm or norden?
Love to see you do a long term review of this bike!!! Looks like a cool bike dude🤘
Maybe the CFMoto/Chinese version is more reliable than the Austrian built version?????
Only time will tell I guess...
Cfmoto builds 890 motor for ktm. I own a 2023 ktm 890 adventure base model. And I absolutely love mine and it has been completely reliable for the first year that I have owned it.
Love my 890 23 to its so great on the road :)
I'm willing to bet China does it better
I've never had a problem with mine. The ktm reliability cliche is way overstated.
Just allow me one lesser critique - the perspective from the X3 makes the bike look like a moped desperately trying to get rid of its rider 😉
When I bought my 690 in 22, I also eyed the twin as I planned a long trip off-tarmac (which I did with the 690).
I actually enjoyed the 360 cam.. also, your laugh as you took off on the gravel 😂😂
had the same reaction to the first KTM I rode. my friends 500...
Thanks
The Insta360 camera angle while you’re cruising along chatting is great. :-)
GREAT VIDEO, doing what you do best, all your video's are great, !!!
Ive had a few KTMs, 625LC4, 950SM, 1290 SUPERDUKE, and I really want this 790 ADVENTURE.
9:50
R and "higher spec" versions in general is not to make them more capable or ride faster.
Better suspension means mostly better comfort, less fatigue, better handling, better overall experience.
Its common misconception about suspension i hear all the time.
Id choose R even if i would ride like grandma to church and still would benefit from more suspension travel.
Benefit of base version is lower bike therefore lower CoG
Cheers
that is some infectious enthusiasm! lol. How would you rate the comfort level on the highway, compared to Tenere / Transalp?
Regarding the weight when comparing to other motorcycles. The KTM doesn't need aftermarket engine protection etc.
nice .. someday wish you try pan america see what you think of it. 😀
I love how much fun you had on this bike
Yes Ben! You definitely need to snag one of these up for long term! Need more victory laps :)
Great Review. You could tell you were having a blast!! Makes me want to go test ride one.
Yes! Please get one for testing!!
I personally feel like KTMs are the forbidden fruit/the girl your mom warned you about. you should TOTALLY buy this and ride it hard to see for yourself how reliable it is.
it's very tempting.
Picked up the black one at the Sublimity Powersports
Definitely pick one up for long term versus the Honda. Still loving my Norden!
Yes long term testing plz
Question: Buy this KTM with a dealership here in my town OR buy the Tuareg 660 with the closest dealer 7 hours away(on highway)? Let me have it gents!
Thanks Ben, for showing us a great bike that has the possibility of going anywhere, and it has a reasonable price
These KTMs very popular in here in South Africa. Personally, I'm a Honda guy for life.
Didnt CF MOTO make the 990 lc8 engine ? Plenty of them with bunches of miles ...
(Ironically, this has become its weakness, too; innovation is too slow, and the cost is not competitive)
CF Moto has something to prove at this introductory stage and has the ambition.
(this might be a coincidence, but it is still interesting)
I think 790 is worth a shot.
Now they're hitting the US market I'd imagine the quality has to be really really good now
How does it compare to the Transalp on road?
Thanks for your video, you are very engaging and informative.
They love us.
Enjoyed the video! How are you getting your audio out to the X3?
Honestly, if you like the 790 ADV, you should just get one for a long-term review and maybe do a a collab/comparison tour with Ian and his 890 ADV R.
Perfect bike, so long as it proves to be reliable. Looks amazing..
Looks and sounds good. little bit of a Zack Courts giggle when spinning the wheel. appreciated. Did you see spite just do a 600 mile on the NK 800? same motor. he is having a blast on it.
What do you think of the Tourmaster Highlander jacket?
Get one! Great long term test
I have a 2021 890 and i have never had a single problem. I have a new FTR that will divide the riding time, but i got the 890 new and so far… not a single issue. Hope this isnt the year that i eat my words.. haha
Great review again Ben. You would enjoy the Ibex 800 T.
@@wilfmoss5242thanks, much to consider. I still lift weights and do construction work but weight is an issue.
Hope you get a chance to try the AJP 650 Adventure someday..
Apparently KTM is determined to not send one of these to my local dealer. He's got two 890 R's on the floor but no base models and no 790s. And I'm interested in the 790 or the Honda trans alp.
The Transalp is the best value
@@MotoCampAdv there's one sitting at my local Honda dealer I've already been in there chatting it up and have a sheet with all the figures. That's 790s calling my name just as hard though and I don't have to make a snap decision, I'll probably have to sell my Triumph to make the whole thing work.
How do you like your Honda? I did a day loop last fall through most of my regional dealers. Looking at this Suzuki the Honda and the Yamaha and the Honda really felt comfortable.
Ben, looks like you’re going to be buying one based on the comments! 😂 Excellent job!
Just don’t hurt yourself!!
no promises
Your lovely wife will not appreciate that! Don’t ask how I know!
is it because the CF moto Ibex is popping off with the same engine loaded for 10k??
Would you recommend this as a starter bike? I’m 5’9” 160 lbs
