This is a skill operatic and musical theatre 'greats' have specialist training toward - over decades. What's so important to understand about John, about his extraordinary talent is that he hasn't had a single vocal lesson. His musical intelligence, his dynamic flow just IS. 😊
There is no one with John Farnhams talent and never will be as he is unique. I am transported when he sings and listen to him over and over. He is a genuinely warm person a sort of a big brother. God speed his recovery.
John once said that the lyrics are more important to him when choosing new songs to perform because he can do his own thing with the music. He's proven that repeatedly.
Yes indeed. Mr Farnham is a musical genius. His interpretation of this song leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat feeling the blood, sweat and tears and wanting to save him from his fate. Perfect performance in every way. Thank you for truly seeing John as we in Australian have been lucky to do for son many years. I am glad you are enjoying him as much as we do.
I was lucky enough to see this in Sydney, what an amazing show. The main cast were made up of professional singers who were each household names in their own right. The idea was to present JCS as a rock arena spectacular in the round, as opposed to a more traditional version using period costume. To this day, the CD is on permanent rotation in my car.
Thank you for this one Mike - John has many talents, but one of his most impressive for me (on top of everything else ) is his phrasing... that coupled with his lung capacity/ breath control... he's a very special person... and we love him.. Get well soon Farnsey ...
I saw it 6 times and was in Sydney for the final night....God I miss this man on stage. He has shared 56 years of my life with me. I was just a kid when I got my first record in 1968.
Wow what a performance. I was fortunate enough to see the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in NY around this same time with Ted Neely, Carl Anderson and Dennis DeYoung. I agree live theater is a feeling like no other. This performance here though was outstanding. The emotions he brought to the table. I know what you mean about the end and I would love to have seen him carry the scene through when he realizes they've all gone to sleep. I can only Imagine how it was. Oh yes please more theatrical performances, I love your reactions, just listened to your Home Free one also, but hell yeah, I'm on board with any and all live performances. Thank you for this. ✌🏻&❤
Thank you for all your great reactions to John. It so heartwarming that people are still inspired by him. I sadly watched a reaction tonight that left me dumbfounded, and after I started to listen to the next reaction, I boiled over and vented on the "Reactor" for his disrespectful critic. All Farnham fans should avoid this particular "reactor". This was his last response to me.... 🌟 MOSEEFUS replied: "Lol you sooooo mad… I hope you never see me again!" and he is right, I never want to hear him critic John again.
It’s hard to believe that I spent a good part of my life never having heard of John. This was just wonderful. John is really just one of a kind. Loved this performance and your comments as well. 🔥😊
Spot on with your review. I must have watched just about everything he has done, hundreds of times, just to hear those soaring notes he hits and his innate ability to engender emotion in his audience. There are many excellent performances of this song by many artists but his rendition of this song is way up there with the best I've ever heard.
Every time I see this performance it takes my breath away. You hear every word and you feel every bit of his emotional delivery. He truly showed us 'The Agony in the Garden' as they sometimes refer to it. I know that the last part is different to most, but I feel after seeing him plead with his Father show his anger then acceptance.... the final call to "take me now before I change my mind" is delivered in such a hauntingly, moving way. Love your analysis as always....jumped over here as soon as I saw the link ...Thank you so much. Love from Australia
Even Opera and Country, that surprised me. I really wanted to see this show but we were working in the desert. We only got one week off every 3 months. I couldn’t make the concert tickets and plane changes work together in one week. Thank you.
John's 'belting vocals' are unmatched, his ability to produce such powerful emotions with his voice is unrivaled among others who have covered this song. It's almost like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote this with John in mind.

Thank you for your reaction. I was there that night, awestruck & holding my breath with many others. It was a minimalist production in the round and having seen the original Australian & London productions in the 70s I wondered about the stark set. I didn't have to. I was familiar with previous stage & film sets and the cast were so good that I didn't look away from them, especially John. I think this is one of John's finest examples of his connection with the lyrics, emotion and being of what he sings.
I was at the last show of the Melbourne production of Jesus Christ Superstar, & it doesn't matter how many times I watch John sing this song, I get body chills & tingles all over, & he brings me to tears every single time. Love this man with my whole heart & soul, & live for the day he is back on stage doing what he loves, bringing joy to everyone that goes to see & hear him. Get well & heal properly dear sweet John, the music scene is struggling without man. 💔❤️🩹💖
I’d love to see DramaSyde react to the same cast singing “Everything’s Alright on “Hey Hey It’s Saturday”. I don’t think he’s had the pleasure of watching Kate Ceberano and Jon Stevens sing with John. Then at the end the entire cast sings “Amazing Grace” in beautiful harmony. Lindsay Field and Russell Morris are in the cast too. In my opinion these two performances are among the best I’ve ever seen on TH-cam.
Great reaction thank you for sharing John's phenomenal voice with the world. No words really to do this performance from john true justice it truly deserves haven't been discovered yet. Can sing the phonebook. So much soul, emotion and passion in this and every performance he does. Always delivers never disappoints. Live is always best with John his wonderful personality shines through.
Outstanding and I would have loved to have been in the audience. That said, I have yet to hear anyone come close to the raw emotion and range that Ted Neeley put into his 70's performance of this song.
Amazing how there can be ethereal performers who, for one reason or another, almost slip through the cracks.. Iz, Eva Cassidy (check out Cassidy's Fields of Gold and Iz singing Over the Rainbow)...and John Farnham. Now, I knew who he was because I lived in Japan during the 80's. Australian pop music was everywhere. Then I come back stateside, and no one knows who I'm talking about. He just doesn't tour outside of his home base. Our loss. I would have loved hearing him live.
Gethsemane is the ultimate John Farnham performance, and this is the FINAL NIGHT! Even after performing this vocally demanding song night after night, he still elicits a feeling of despair and frustration. I'm not a Christian, but if anyone is capable of making me feel empathy with Jesus Christ, it's our Farnesey. And the live recording of the Aussie JCS is even better, if you believe it. Possibly the greatest singer ever.
I have not seen anyone else do it better he is a true vocal genius! Like you said across all genres GOAT
John is, without a doubt, fantastic. For me though, it's Ted Neeley in this role; even into his 80's now he can still hit me in the feels with it.
