I'm calling it now, Akinari is no 1 on his Persona 3 SL rankings, or at least top 3. Easily the best SL in the game, and matched perfectly with the game's message, and having played P3 before P4 the reference made me tear up
Fr, the part where he gets aggrivated over how people judge the guy for how he grieves kinda feels like Schaff prolly delt with that himself. I hope he's doing ok. :(
@@FurKid_the_Gg_roo_99 oh yeah definitely, i was there when Schaff had just recovered from his injuries. uploaded videos as per usual because talking about his interests was how he coped rather than making a dedicated video to unwrapping the whole thing, and i remember people online asking him why he wouldn't process his grief he WAS processing it, just not the way people expected him to.
@@ramiropiwnicki5970 yeah so you know how schaffrilas has a brother (william) who appeared in a few videos (i think the lego star wars ones) change the has to had. Car accident, in January
I didn't think about Naoki being close to Schaff before Number 1 dropped, but damn. That number 1 was the best one he's done so far. The emotional connection was... Really great. And you can just tell from his voice that he truly relates to Naoki because of what happened. We love you, Schaff.
23:00 In Japan, hugging someone is almost exclusively a romantic gesture. And a big one at that. The localizers could have done a better job conveying that. “Stand there” carries a pretty negative connotation in English, so it probably should have said something like “Stay” or “Talk Rise through it”.
@@chainsawpochita Yosuke was supposed to be a romantically gay social link, but Atlus said Nah, you can still find lines of text off it in the original P4, there's even a mod to restore it
I find it funny that despite being objectively awful, everyone does the Nurse social link. Simply because there is nothing to do in the evenings otherwise.
I feel like the reason Yukiko is so untalked about is because she's just kinda... normal Chie is an aggressive tomboy Rise is an idol Naoto is a detective Yukiko is just kinda a normal high schooler, which honestly to me is a lot of her charm
I have a slight bias against her. After playing FE awakening i gained something of a disdain for stories centered around cooking or being bad at cooking.
When you start the game in the beginning, you have the chance to actually see the siblings talking. They have a back and forth about Saki eating his snacks in the fridge. How missed those mundane moments are now.
Nanako and Dojima’s social links were my favourite. It works because you’re living with them. It’s why Sojiro’s in persona 5 was also one of my favourites. The fact that you’re living with them and you’re making an actual relationship. No longer just a stranger but family
Nanako's SL alone is the reason why I was LIVID when I entered her level. Thank God I took the good choices for the true ending (because even though I wasn't spoiled, I was suspecting Adachi from the very beginning and I thought it was a red herring when I was making the choices) because otherwise I would have let my pure unadulterated rage take over. No other stage in any Persona game ever gave me such strong feelings
I ended up becoming friends with Sojiro and then becoming romantic with Futaba. Makes our family dynamic hilariously awkward when he knows I'm banging his daughter.
I realized during Number 3 that Number 1 was gonna be either Nanako or some other social link, and realized "wait, the Hanged Man??? Why?" But when you said "it's the story I needed in my life right now", that's when I remembered what happened. Keep being you man. I'm sorry for what happened, but you got this.
I think I realised why Naoki was your number 1 about halfway through the section, I teared up a bit when you let yourself vent a little bit. I've never once dealt with grief in my life, but I have had shitty things happen to me. And the example you set of still being able to live your life how you want to despite horrid things happening helps to keep me personally grounded. I'm not gonna pretend I think about you on a regular basis or anything, but the times I'm reminded about you. Well it helps. Also best girl is Chie fuck you fight me
i heard he is not really a Ann fan and will definitely fight him once he makes the persona 5 confidants ranking video edit: actually he was really nice about her in his ranking
Chie is peak. Fun no-nonsense first archetype girl in Persona (like Lisa, Yukari), girl next door vibe. She always grow. Like insight, deduction (fog leak to their world, TV on side of road, Namatame try to save people). Grow academic in story, SL (also nail Adachi' char point as a normal average man without bonds lash out in her 3 awakening), good relatable self-esteem arc without being over the top bc she thinks is just normal ordinary compared to her friends but still strive to protect people. Mine choice is Yukari and Chie. Knowing shoujo and harem manga logic. It's Yukari and Chie the most likely ones for the MCs. Chie is Yukari's parallel (Chie always is Yukari in materials between 2 games like Gekkoukan costume mode in p4, they also meet a gang in SLs then and come to accept the MCs's help, etc). First girls archetype who put on a tough mask but sweet to the MCs and girl next door vibe with underdog story who thinks they couldn't get the suave cool MCs is the flag. Underdog is the flag. Soejima says Chie is the foundation for design and colour for p4 as a normal cute girl that can exsist in real life so it's like heroine. How Yukari reacts to Yuki's death. Like how Chie monologuing she isn't special like other girls in Valentine really hit in the feels and is just sweet. Underdog just makes them special. First archetype girls Yukari and Chie like the MCs. Furthermore, the MCs can be whatever they want for the future because Yukari and Chie would support them no matter what while they're not be bounded by any occupation or anything. It's best for whatever future they have for the MCs.
The moment you talked about the social link about a boy losing a sister and trying to handle his process of grief at his own way, besides the judgment of other people.... I immediately knew where this was coming
I really like how Kanji's Social Link deals with toxic masculinity and the pressure that social norms place on young men to avoid anything so-called "feminine" like it's the plague since it will somehow make them less of a man.
Ignoring the bots. I really like how some pieces of fiction represent toxic masculinity. I see it as a situation where ur technically more masculine if u accept yourself.
@@christianholbrook2686He gets flustered about the main character's appearance in multiple outfits and openly compliments his appearance while acknowledging how confused that makes him feel. Kanji liking men isn't subtext, it's text.
I see Kanji more as bisexual or pansexual since he still likes Naoto even after finding out she’s a girl. It doesn’t make him any less gay, just a different flavor of it.
The number one spot genuinely made me cry. It was also one of my favorites and coincidentally also hits close to home since I've lost my grandfather. I can only wish you the best in your grieving process, regardless of what that means for you.
Yukiko is just the most "I just think she's neat." I like a lot of her bizarre interests and her bit about playing the trumpet is the best comedic note in the whole game
57:33 this part of the video made me cry like a baby. This year I’ve lost many people close to me in quick succession. And I relate heavily to just wanting to be treated normal by people around you instead of constant pity. It’s been a hard year for me and hearing you being open about grief meant a lot to me. Thank you for putting that part in James
I already commented on this video, but I'm commenting again after fully watching and seeing your segment on Naoki. He's my favorite p4 character tied with Adachi (ironically), and it's largely because of the time of my life I first played persona 4. I lost my father 5 years ago, and still being a teenager, navigating the rest of school and my normal life was (and is) absolutely grueling. He was the most important person in my life, and going through Naoki's link, I've genuinely never seen a better and more startling potrayal of grief anywhere. It's exactly how I felt to a point where it's uncomfortable. I always urge new players to do his link when he comes up, and I've discussed it so much on twitter that my mutuals know me as the guy obsessed with Naoki Konishi, but I cannot stress enough how impactful his story was on me. Grief is hard, and complicated and ultimately messy like you put it, and I hope that one day you can walk into the grocery store with a sense of normalcy. I know it took me years to even get out of bed normally.
Yukiko is _my_ favorite Persona character, so it's refreshing to see someone spotlight her character and... y'know... ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND what the writers were going for with her. Also sidenote, but I hope the character episodes with the male members of SEES from P3R are included in that ranking, even if just as a transition. EDIT: Damn, man. That last bit was too real... and it's entirely deserved. I don't blame you for not censoring yourself there.
Shit dude… the grief in your voice when you were talking about your trips to the grocery store not feeling the same because… well, you know. I feel you man, about how some things just don’t feel the same as they used to after a loss, but you live on regardless. I felt that in my core man. Great video, can’t wait to see the P5 and P3 rankings.
I’m in tears after listening to you talk about Naoki. I only casually played P4G so I never really did the social links (I really should’ve dangit) so I didn’t have any established biases about him in particular, but this got me emotional. It’s been over a year since your loss, right? To avoid saying any standard phrases that have become hollow from overuse, I just hope you know they would be so proud of you for continuing to exist and making the content they loved to make with you 💕
Just a note about the hugging portions of Rise and Yosuke's social links: Hugging and other forms of physical contact are fairly uncommon in Japanese culture. High fives, handshakes, and other things most people in the West take for granted are almost never seen in Japan, making the hugs that come up with Rise and Yosuke effectively equivalent to a kiss. I was pretty confused by that too when I reached that part of Rise's link, but the friend who got me into P4 in the first place cleared that up for me. Thought I'd share for anyone else who was confused by that narrative choice.
@@aromathera there's leftover files in the original game heavily suggesting that Yosuke was gonna be a romance option, but the route was cut (hence all the weird vaguely flirty interactions between him and the MC - they were meant to be a tease towards that)
@@sacredeight Yep-and they exist in both English and Japanese! There’s lots of other stuff, too, that sm people aren’t aware of 😭 for example, the files prove that his SL was originally reversible, which is … interesting, since it’s really only used for girls you can romance, and-the most damming evidence of all-he literally has a ‘flag’ that specifically unlocks the option to hug him (or pat his head fjdgh) in rank 8 😭 that mechanic is literally designed to make romancing certain characters harder/more true to life and afaik the only other SL in P4G that uses it is Naoto’s, and in that context you need to hit the flags to unlock her romance route. Imo the only real explanation for why this interaction is randomly locked behind a flag despite not affecting the SL at all is that it originally did make a difference. Given that you initiate Rise’s romance route with a hug, I think the implications are pretty clear. Sorry for going off lol I just get so insane whenever anyone brings this up 😭 hurts to imagine what we could’ve had if Atlus weren’t cowards
Most underrated part of Kanji's social link is Rank 2 where he's getting grumpy with the Aiya owner and says he's gonna tear the shop apart before he realizes you're there and says, "I'm gonna tear it apart and rebuild it twice as good! I-I'm gonna RENOVATE your ass!"
I don’t know if people pointed this out, but in Naoki’s section, Schaffrillas actually swears. No dolphin noises, no wordplay, just a normal swear. This may seem uneventful, but you have to remember that Schaffrillas has NEVER sweared in a normal video uncensored. This one moment shows how much he relates to not only Naoki as a character, but also the situations he encounters throughout the social link. Maybe he also had a situation where people told him to start grieving “the right way”. Maybe he also had work taken away from him to start grieving. This one moment is one of the best in Schaffrilas history: a simple word that means so much. R.I.P Patrick and Chris❤.
the slow “oh, shit” moment as the list went on and i realized what was coming up was only topped by the number one segment itself- it’s one thing to relate to a fictional character in a piece of media, but it’s something else altogether when the subject matter is so masterfully handled in a way that makes you think “is this the same game?” i, personally, have lived through similar events to yumi’s link almost to the letter. it’s one of my favorites for that reason- a bias i only developed later on, since the first time i played the game, i hadn’t yet lived through the experience. grief is a bitch! everyone feels it differently. there’s no right or wrong way to experience loss- and there’s something really beautiful in knowing that even though no two experiences are the same, you can still find examples in media similar enough to resonate with you in a way that affects you meaningfully for years to come. i’m glad this rankings list was made- not just as a persona fan, but because it’s just genuinely well-thought out and enjoyable to watch. i look forward to the other two rankings, if and when they make their way onto my feed.
GOD I relate so hard to the "Why aren't you grieving *the right way"* thing. Thankfully I never had to deal with other people saying things like that to me, but that never stopped my brain from repeating it. When my grandma passed away, I expected that I'd be miserable at least for a few days. That I'd be a total wreck and would just shut down for a little while. But... no. I heard the news, I cried for a little bit, and then... I was just kind of fine. And my brain just kept telling me that this was wrong. That I shouldn't be handling this as well as I was. That I must be heartless and that I didn't care, or that it just hadn't hit me yet, and that at any moment it would just come rushing at me and I would start sobbing and wailing. But... nope. The most that I got was occasionally teary-eyed at a memory, or I'd remember that she wasn't here and would just go "...oh..." Even then I knew that there are different grieving processes, but it just felt... off, you know?
I know a random comment from someone you don't know on the internet won't mean to much but I would just like to say that I appreciate how much of your own emotions you put into your number one slot. I know it kind of goes against what you were saying about it and that you don't need condolences but I am glad you were able to share a piece of your grief with other, it shows tremendous character and I just want to thank you. I know plenty of people in my life who grieve but don't want to talk about it especially to strangers. So thank you for sharing.
So in a lot of cultures there's an idea that beings only have power as long as they're worshipped. For example a poorly tended shrine could make the guardian of the land the shrine is on so weak they might lose their memories and become human or they could outright die. Another more out there example is how Freddy Kruger wants people to believe in him and fear him since that gives him power. So there's a few ways to interpret the fox. It could be the fox is the outright guardian of that specific shrine and he fears it eventually getting torn down or he could be an agent of the deity the shrine belongs to tasked with restoring the shrine to its former glory itself and since it can't do that it bargains with Yu in exchange for his help. Or it could perhaps just be a friendly spirit that doesn't even necessarily care about the shrine but cares about the people who leave their wishes and wants to make their wishes come true.
I also think it's an interesting way to show Yu interacting with the local community. And how he grows a bond not just with teh fox, but with everyone he helps.
@@shyguydociguess8229 you're right I didn't think about that but the Fox IS a link to the people of Inaba which is important to Yu becoming a member of the town and getting to know everyone.
Why didn't you say anything about the accomplice ending with Adachis social link. I love how it automatically ranks up to max showing how you are stuck with him for the rest of your life because if you don't he will use his authority as a cop to put you in jail
You describe Naoki's link so well and portray how well it is. It makes me feel so bad; I never went far in his link because I started it late and ran out of time... I gotta go back and see it.
Regardless of why it’s #1 for Schaff, which makes total sense given the tragic circumstances, Naoki is seriously slept on. I ignored his route the first time I played the game and then the second time I didn’t and I was so shocked at how deeply profound it was. Not only does the actor play his few lines perfectly, but the story just feels so raw and authentic. And watching him process his grief over losing his sister just feels a bit too real at times.
In my opinion this whole issue of Idachi's greatest faults coming from his unwillingness to connect with others is even more strengthened by Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, where he has a sort of redemption arc where he comes to sort of see the folly in his way of thinking, and comes to accept that despite everything he did, Dojima still wants to connect with him as someone who was his former partner. Something that was alluded to in P4 Golden's original ending. And there's something very beautiful about that. That, while yes he's committed some horrible crimes and needs to answer for them, it's still possible for him to grow as a person and accept connections, and find some form of happiness in his seemingly dreary life.
I think an underrated aspect to Yukiko is just how unflappable she is when it comes to horror. In situations where her friends are freaking out over the lights going out or a spooky doll in Persona Q, she's cackling and just enjoying herself.
Your section about pressures when handling grief really hit for me in such a meaningful way. Thank you. ..and then the credits image jumpscared me and made me laugh so hard LMAO THANK YOU AGAIN
I think the reason the Fox asks for money is so it can provide as a charity for the shrine. Before starting the link the game says how you think helping complete the requests would get more people to provide to the shrine. This would make the discounts make sense as the more people you help, the more the people provide money to the shrine, and the less money the fox needs from you
When you put Naoki in number 1, I almost immediately realized why. It's hard to find a story dealing with grief like Naoki's in most media because of the societal expectations placed upon people dealing with grief. The correlation between Naoki's social link and what happened in real life make the segment just a whole lot more poetic, beautiful, and tragic. I've also been watching the streams posted on Chris' channel and I've been having a lot of fun watching them. So far, the dubs I've finished watching are the P4G redub, the Persona 3 dub, the Undertale dub (+the Obama genocide route), and the Persona 2 dub. I'm probably going to binge through the Persona 5 dub next and I can't wait to continue that.
I'm now 100% convinced Teddie is the most misunderstood Persona character. The reason why his social link is automatic is because his identity is tied to the Investigation Team. Without his friends, he is nothing but a shadow, and his desire to be loved and to be accepted is what drives him to do what he does. He doesn't have the best influences, but that doesn't mean what he does is intentionally malicious. Teddie's link is special in that he suffers an identity crisis just like everyone else does, but he doesn't fully come to terms with it until the incident with Nanako. He's someone that tries hard to deny his true nature because he feels he won't be accepted if his true nature is shown. That's where the player character comes in, the player guides Teddie into the realization that the truth that he is a shadow doesn't mean he can't be accepted, and that most of his fears come from a deeply-rooted anxiety that took over him. His mentality is similar to a naive child; without the proper guidance, he'd fall into a dark path. I enjoyed your analysis of the other links, but I'm highly disappointed in your coverage on Teddie, especially since you usually look deeper into meanings besides their surface-level meaning. The bear doesn't deserve the hate he gets, and it's heartbreaking to see it further perpetuated by someone of your following. I'd love it if you could watch my video on him, but I doubt this comment would be noticed.
I remember watching your video, and it was really well done and it did help me appreciate more Teddie in the sense of his role in the main story. It also didn’t help that the original English localization painted Teddie in a more negative light, and it makes me wish more TH-camrs like Schaffrillas actually took the time to research more of the context of media, especially for things they say they love.
There's also the fact that the localization just killed his fucking character before he even had a chance. In the original Japanese, it's pretty explicit that the dude essentially has the mental capacity of a child and doesn't really understand what he's doing or saying. Combine that with the first three dungeons of the game being Yukiko, Kanji, and Rise's, and add the favt he goes to live with Yosuke, of all characters (love him but he should not be in charge of Teddie's housing), and you get a recipe for disaster. But a lot of people just see him as pervert bear
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Schaff say an uncensored “Fuck” on his channel before, but there really wasn’t a better place to put it then in his analysis of Naoki’s social link
As someone who always loved Naoki's social link the most, your perspective and context for how powerful and realistic his social link is gave me a whole new appreciation for it. Thanks for the awesome video!
After watching the whole vid I thought I'd post an actually serious comment instead of a joke one. I was wondering what 1st place was since i havent played it in a while, and after hearing how you related to Naoki and what happened i totally get it. In 2016 I lost my older brother to a brain tumor which took him out while sleeping through surgery, but what got me is never saying actual final words since I never got a chance to talk to him once he left for the hospital. Not only that but when everyone was saying final words to his unconscious body before the surgery and saying how they wanted him to get better and prayed, when I got the room to myself i instead told him that its ok to go, and I was proud of him bettering himself from his anger issues up to his death. After that it felt awkward with everyone being sad and some people telling me its ok to fall behind in school and such cause of it happening. And while I appreciated it, I also hated the idea of the constant negative feelings attached to when they discussed him with me, so I always made the choice of talking about him positively despite him being gone. It hurt when a ton of people in a server I was in said I was "bringing him up for pity" when in reality I wanted to show that he meant something and i didnt want his memory to go away. Know that this comment isnt a "Let me tell everyone about my dead brother", but a comment about how while never fully understanding you since the situation wasnt the same and I'm not a well known person online, that we both want to still be treated normally and show people thorough our actions that they may be gone, but will never fully go away.
Sending this comment just so you know you've been heard and what you said genuinely meant something to someone, it think it feels nicer than just leaving a like. Thank you for sharing your story, take care always❤
57:45 The grief you have losing 2 of your best mates must really hurt, even today, with your grocery story that you dont have to buy that many snacks anymore, since the incident last year. I still hope your doing well, schaff, because i know your best friend and brother are looking at you from up there, seeing you thrive and be happy with your current life and career without them there to witness it.
16:07 You know what? I had a classmate that looked like 11 years of age at the beginning of high school and I met him before the opening ceremony and I was shocked that he was gonna be in the same class as me (he was 14 just like everyone else). Then he started to grow some facial hair but he still had that chubby face that made him look like a middle school student. Ayane always reminded me of him, some people apparently just look like that going to high school
My older sister f*cking loves Persona so much! And from the looks of it, yeah, it looks fun and I actually do have the Persona DLC in Smash but I don’t really know what the point of the franchise is about so I guess I have some lore to go through in this video.
I didn't expect to be crying at a Schaff video today but here I am. Thank you Schaff, your analysis of Naoki's social link hit me square in the heart. Amazing video as always
His may be reaching but I wonder if Adachi saying that he could have been a magician in another life is intentionally hinting at the fact that if he had been more open to and alive in forming friendships he theoretically could have been the Magician Arcana, the one that is typically the MC’s best friend.
James. I want you to know, I also relate to Naoki. I felt a recent loss, as I know you did too... It broke me more than anything a video game put me through. I subscribe to the idea that everything happens for a reason. Bad things happen to treasure the good things. I hope you read this. It took me a long time to grieve. But that's what helped me along the way. Knowing that there IS nothing I could have done. It already happened. And just like Meet The Robinsons. Keep moving foward.
One thing I think Yukiko and Rise's social links do really well that doesn't get touched on here is the idea of overcompensation. Of course we as an audience know that they're trying too hard to change, but for a couple of high schoolers that just confronted a massive part of themselves, it feels really natural they'd take it to extremes. Yukiko gets so blinded by the fact that if something is her choice it *has* to be different from what others are expecting of her, taking steps to be independent and strike out from her family and acquaintances that she so deeply cares about just because she believes that what independence means. So, while it's an obvious conclusion, that realization that independence doesn't mean an outright rejection of the support of others and that she can use her independence and freedom to choose to be with the people she loves is a powerful message. I personally can relate a lot to Rise's journey as well. There was a point in my life where I realized that how differently I acted around different people made me feel like I was a bunch of fake selves, and I wanted to try and discard that. But, after enough time, realizing that each different expression is a different facet of who someone is and it doesn't make them any less "real" was a really important lesson to learn. When the entire crux of Rise's social link is her struggling with who she is and feeling like she never got a chance to be herself, it feels earned that the entire duration is her realizing that blatantly rejecting a part of herself for the notion that those facets must be fake just isn't the case. Ultimately, both focus on them coming to a realization about themselves and not only struggling with that revelation but struggling with how to take that lesson and apply it to their lives. It speaks to the idea that just because you realize something it doesn't mean you're going to make the right changes the first time around. Being told "you have freedom to choose your path in life" or "you're more complex than a single expression of self" doesn't instantly mean you'll figure out how to live your life. They teach you that it's okay to stumble and that growing is an ongoing experience, not a one time event
Okay but legitimately how shitty Yumi's rejection scene made me feel essentially made sure I NEVER chose her for the Sun Link again after the first time. I could not handle doing that to her again
James, you're such a good content creator that I will happily watch and be entertained by hour-long videos on subjects I have no knowledge of. This is a great video! The ending got to me, especially the supermarket part. I wish you all the best in the world.
My biggest gripe with the fox is that turning in the quest always takes up a time slot. I can run back and forth between Junes, the school, and the shopping district a hundred times without spending time, but going to the shrine and turning in the ema? And they can't even give us some extra cutscenes to build a relationship with the fox for that time??
Even if he prefers Rise and Yumi, this is still a GOATED Yukiko take. Let the Yuki-cult rise like with this video (and maybe a remake like with P3R Yukari). EDIT: I just saw the number 1. It makes perfect sense why it was chosen.
Naoki's rank 7 story hit hard for me when I first learned about it. It was right after I moved away from my parents and siblings for college. Shortly before learning about it(through hiding in private's amazing series), my mom told me how the fact I'm not there sits in at night(when I'm most social). So when I saw parallels between what Naoki was taking about and what my mom said...made me even more homesick then I already was. I also did what Saki did, just most commonly leftover Chinese food.
One thing that I rarely ever see in stories dealing with grief is how it's the little things you miss. It's always the little habits or regular occurrences that will remind you and hit you far more than any event or memento, and I've only seen P4 and Good Will Hunting mention it. I'm sorry you have to go through it, and I hope that the pain may one day diminish so that it may no longer be such a heavy burden. For me, I lost 3 dogs, with one only about 15 months ago, and what always gets me is how quiet the house is without them walking around. As for humans, I have my grandma's paintings all over the house, but her habit of always sending personal messages in the most public way she could (not malicious, she just really didn't get social media) is what gets me to think back on her. As for my other grandmother, she died when I was little so I have no memories, but my dad said that what really made it sink in that his mom was gone was the first Sunday after she passed, and she didn't call to have their weekly chats.
45:47 i think it kinda sucks that you seemingly forgot to comment on the alternate version of his social link where you become his accomplice, so schaff, if you or anyone else for the matter see this id appreciate if you gave ur input on it even if it's negative (imo i think its very cool and chilling because of the implications they make during that.) on a different note i appreciate that they delve into him kinda sorta appreciating dojimas company in the end of his story in the arena game. implying that he is willing to make a friend after learning from his mistake.
Fantastic ranking! Your #1 pick really resonated with me, and I really like how you were able to neatly separate your thoughts on the character vs. how their social link story played out.
For Naoki's SL, I remember when I initiated his at 2020 and I didn't touch him until the last doable month in-game, he came in clutch at the very last day where I wasn't allowed to have any more actionable days. I find starting and ending his SL to be so profound and meaningful as I finished my very first playthrough, like as if the game was encouraging me to listen to one more soul's story before the final climax. When I saw his memory when my character was at his lowest against the final boss, it made it even more epic.
That was intentional, I said his name correctly the first time but I wanted to reference the Ace Attorney guy the second time as a joke. What exactly is the "Dude..." for
11:38 if you go back during the final day to the shrine, you’ll actually find 3 baby foxes by interacting with the shrine itself, so the fox was getting money for their children That being said, it’s technically not part of the link itself
I REALLY love how the anime adaptation handled Nanako and Dojima's relationship and social links. In the anime, most of the social links outside the main party received a partial or full episode exploring the main points of their problems (Naoki's got pretty badly shafted ngl). Most links had their own episode, some were paired into the same episode (like Ai's and Kou's), and most went into the summer break compilation episodes. Nanako and Dojima not only shared a full episode, but expertly interwove their issues together. The links go together in-game naturally, so the anime basically did the same thing, but more fluidly. Some of the events are told together, and some are changed to better suit the actual needs of the characters. I especially love the scene when Nanako runs away, and instead of Yu comforting her at the floodplain, Yu tells Dojima to quit running from his problems, man up, and go comfort her himself because she needs her dad. I teared up so much watching Nanako break down in her dad's arms, and the 'family' comes together afterwards so much more naturally. If you haven't seen the anime, I highly recommend it. It's no replacement for the game, but it's by far one of the best videogame adaptation series out there.
I’d rather not see him do Megamind Rules Season 2. He already made peak review content with the first season and movie, and he’s made it clear he wants nothing to do with it in the future.

23:00 In Japan, hugging someone is almost exclusively a romantic gesture. And a big one at that. The localizers could have done a better job conveying that. “Stand there” carries a pretty negative connotation in English, so it probably should have said something like “Stay” or “Talk Rise through it”.

Yukiko is just kinda a normal high schooler, which honestly to me is a lot of her charm
Feeling trapped by your hometown is very relatable to me and why she's one of my top 10 favorite Persona characters.

Man Chie is awesome, I love everything about her

Yosuke's social link is actually the best in the series if you live in the alternative reality where Atlus didn't cut the romance
i'm sorry, what the fuck is going on here?
TRUE
I pity the poor writer who got their content cut out by the Pink Plague Duo of Yasogami apologists...
R.I.P Patrick and Chris❤.
the slow “oh, shit” moment as the list went on and i realized what was coming up was only topped by the number one segment itself- it’s one thing to relate to a fictional character in a piece of media, but it’s something else altogether when the subject matter is so masterfully handled in a way that makes you think “is this the same game?”
i, personally, have lived through similar events to yumi’s link almost to the letter. it’s one of my favorites for that reason- a bias i only developed later on, since the first time i played the game, i hadn’t yet lived through the experience. grief is a bitch! everyone feels it differently. there’s no right or wrong way to experience loss- and there’s something really beautiful in knowing that even though no two experiences are the same, you can still find examples in media similar enough to resonate with you in a way that affects you meaningfully for years to come.
i’m glad this rankings list was made- not just as a persona fan, but because it’s just genuinely well-thought out and enjoyable to watch. i look forward to the other two rankings, if and when they make their way onto my feed.
But... nope. The most that I got was occasionally teary-eyed at a memory, or I'd remember that she wasn't here and would just go "...oh..."
Even then I knew that there are different grieving processes, but it just felt... off, you know?
I feel you on this one, honestly. :S

I haven’t even played Persona but the final segment made me cry. I hope you’re doing well
I think an underrated aspect to Yukiko is just how unflappable she is when it comes to horror. In situations where her friends are freaking out over the lights going out or a spooky doll in Persona Q, she's cackling and just enjoying herself.
Your section about pressures when handling grief really hit for me in such a meaningful way. Thank you.
..and then the credits image jumpscared me and made me laugh so hard LMAO THANK YOU AGAIN
im glad you uploaded this just as i was getting back into persona
Agreed. I honestly expected better from Schaffrillas, but oh well.
Can't bring myself to care much for the video now. Sorry dude. Maybe next time?
I remember watching your video, and it was really well done and it did help me appreciate more Teddie in the sense of his role in the main story. It also didn’t help that the original English localization painted Teddie in a more negative light, and it makes me wish more TH-camrs like Schaffrillas actually took the time to research more of the context of media, especially for things they say they love.
Tbf his running gags are super annoying that does sour a character a fair bit
There's also the fact that the localization just killed his fucking character before he even had a chance.
In the original Japanese, it's pretty explicit that the dude essentially has the mental capacity of a child and doesn't really understand what he's doing or saying. Combine that with the first three dungeons of the game being Yukiko, Kanji, and Rise's, and add the favt he goes to live with Yosuke, of all characters (love him but he should not be in charge of Teddie's housing), and you get a recipe for disaster.
But a lot of people just see him as pervert bear
That one guy from the sopranos is the best social link
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Schaff say an uncensored “Fuck” on his channel before, but there really wasn’t a better place to put it then in his analysis of Naoki’s social link
Not going to complain about seeing this on my recommended IMMEDIATELY after reading a chapter on my favorite Persona 4 crossover fic 'Golden Cross'.
That name kinda reminds of the Grand Cross from Persona 2, is it related?
Jesus Schaff you had me crying at the end and then hit me with the adachi jumpscare lol. Great video as always!

The grief you have losing 2 of your best mates must really hurt, even today, with your grocery story that you dont have to buy that many snacks anymore, since the incident last year. I still hope your doing well, schaff, because i know your best friend and brother are looking at you from up there, seeing you thrive and be happy with your current life and career without them there to witness it.
seeing you connect so deeply to naoki's character, especially after everything that's happened, is incredibly heartwarming to me. great segment.

And now schaffrillas has conducted another banger
42:05 this goofy-ah laughter broke me, I could not help but giggle along, free will is not real.
My older sister f*cking loves Persona so much! And from the looks of it, yeah, it looks fun and I actually do have the Persona DLC in Smash but I don’t really know what the point of the franchise is about so I guess I have some lore to go through in this video.
What the hell is wrong with you? This literally has NOTHING to do with my comment! 😒
My mom died almost 4 years ago and I still find Naoki's story beautifully done. I hope one day it'll get a little easier Schaff
I definitely recommend Hiding in Private's Persona 4 analysis series. It's genuinely really good as they dive deep into every aspect of the game
A phantom thief is the Japanese equivalent of the Gentleman thief in western media.
Basically, a chivalrous thief type character.

Oh, I'm so pumped for the next two! These are great, your narration always gets me to laugh or to cry.
44:35 I'm pretty sure he means it in the sense that it's not an empty threat, and that he thinks adachi actually will kill him next time
Even if he prefers Rise and Yumi, this is still a GOATED Yukiko take.
Your #1 pick really resonated with me, and I really like how you were able to neatly separate your thoughts on the character vs. how their social link story played out.
ah yes, schaffrillas played all the persona games, all 3 of them
For Naoki's SL, I remember when I initiated his at 2020 and I didn't touch him until the last doable month in-game, he came in clutch at the very last day where I wasn't allowed to have any more actionable days. I find starting and ending his SL to be so profound and meaningful as I finished my very first playthrough, like as if the game was encouraging me to listen to one more soul's story before the final climax. When I saw his memory when my character was at his lowest against the final boss, it made it even more epic.
I love Persona 4! Happy to see this from you!

> The game says "Shu Nakajima"
> Schaff: Shu Takumi
Dude...
Isnt Shu Takumi the Ace Attorney writer?
Indeed he is
Probably didn't feel like re-recording the line in editing lol.
That was intentional, I said his name correctly the first time but I wanted to reference the Ace Attorney guy the second time as a joke. What exactly is the "Dude..." for
@@SchaffrillasProductions It's because they prefer the Apollo Justice Trilogy more
11:38 if you go back during the final day to the shrine, you’ll actually find 3 baby foxes by interacting with the shrine itself, so the fox was getting money for their children
That being said, it’s technically not part of the link itself
Schaffrillas is doing sidequests so he can avoid the main story, which is his review of Megamind Rules Season 2
@Joseph-11411Bro I thought you were terminated
So basically, he's doing a Majora's Mask or Xenoblade XD
I’d rather not see him do Megamind Rules Season 2. He already made peak review content with the first season and movie, and he’s made it clear he wants nothing to do with it in the future.
@@Kaisona2017he posted a clip on his Twitter, so he’s gonna cover it

im in my biggest persona 4 hyperfixation ever right now when i tell you i JUMPED for joy when this notification popped up😭😭💙💙
Thank you ive been wanting to hear you talk about persona for a while now, this honestly made my day

I am sorry to make light of your situation but I think it’s funny to imagine there are at least a few viewers who have no idea about your tragedy last year and are very confused whenever you vaguely hint at it
I would be one. I don’t mean to be nosy or bring up painful experiences but I’m completely out of the loop on what #1 was about
